    Abstract: Wie stellen Menschen die Ereignisse in ihrer Lebensgeschichte und der Geschichte ihrer Familie(n) dar, wenn sie davon erzählen? Wie stehen das Erzählen und das Erleben in der Gegenwart im Zusammenhang mit dem Erleben und dem Erzählen in der Vergangenheit? Dieses Buch beantwortet diese Fragen mit einer theoretisch-empirischen Untersuchung der gegenseitigen Wechselwirkungen von Erinnern, Erleben und der Präsentation des Erlebten zu verschiedenen Zeitpunkten eines Lebensverlaufs und der damit zusammenhängenden Verläufe der Kollektivgeschichten. Trotz der daraus resultierenden Erwartungsunsicherheit organisiert sich die Kommunikation selbst und gießt sich in idealtypische Muster. Unter systemtheoretischen Annahmen modelliert Christina Laut-Berger die Kommunikationsstrukturen von 4chan.org anhand eines innovativen, netzwerkanalytischen Forschungsdesigns und leistet so einen Beitrag zur grundlegenden Erforschung digitaler Sozialität

    Abstract: Die Lebenssituationen homosexueller Menschen in Deutschland und Europa wurden in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts von Widersprüchen geprägt: Während die staatliche Strafverfolgung weitgehend endete, erwiesen sich gesellschaftliche Diskriminierungen als deutlich langlebiger, bevor sie schließlich emanzipativen Entwicklungen Raum geben mussten. Ausgehend von den Nachwirkungen der NS-Homosexuellenverfolgung in den Nachkriegsgesellschaften der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, der DDR und Österreichs, betrachtet dieser Band die Vielfalt von Repressionen nach 1945. Die thematische Breite reicht von der Ausgrenzung innerhalb der Kommunistischen Partei über die Kriminalisierung homosexueller Handlungen im Strafrecht und antilesbische Ausrichtungen im Familienrecht bis hin zur homophoben Diskriminierung innerhalb der Bundeswehr. Untersucht werden auch die Rolle der Kirchen als Seismographen sexueller Ausgrenzung oder Liberalisierung sowie die emanzipativen Trends in den Transformationszeiten des späten 20. Jahrhunderts einschließlich ihrer Begrenzungen durch neue Formen mehrheitsgesellschaftlicher Anpassung und Normalisierung

    Abstract: A vital sourcebook for information on clothing and textiles in the middle ages, containing many previously unprinted documents. Texts (with modern English translation) offering insights into the place of cloth and clothing in everyday life are presented here. Covering a wide range of genres, they include documents from the royal wardrobe accounts and petitions to king and Parliament, previously available only in manuscript form. The accounts detail royal expenditure on fabrics and garments, while the petitions demand the restoration of livery, for example, or protest about the needfor winter clothing for children who are wards of the king. In addition, the volume includes extracts from wills, inventories and rolls of livery, sumptuary laws, moral and satirical works condemning contemporary fashions, an OldEnglish epic, and English and French romances. The texts themselves are in Old and Middle English, Latin and Anglo-Norman French, with some of the documents switching between more than one of these languages. They are presented with introduction, glossary and detailed notes. Louise M.     Abstract: Arguing that demographic thought begins not with quantification but in attempts to control the qualities of people, Human Empire traces two transformations spanning the early modern period. First was the emergence of population as an object of governance through a series of engagements in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England, Ireland, and colonial North America, influenced by humanist policy, reason of state, and natural philosophy, and culminating in the creation of political arithmetic. Second was the debate during the long eighteenth century over the locus and limits of demographic agency, as church, civil society, and private projects sought to mobilize and manipulate different marginalized and racialized groups - and as American colonists offered their own visions of imperial demography. This innovative, engaging study examines the emergence of population as an object of knowledge and governance and connects the history of demographic ideas with their early modern intellectual, political, and colonial contexts

    Abstract: "This book traces two transformations in early modern English thinking about the governance of populations. The first, spanning the Tudor and early Stuart eras, was a shift in emphasis in defining the real object of demographic knowledge and intervention. While sixteenth-century engagements with what we would consider demographic entities and processes tended to identify particular, qualitatively defined groups (referred to here as "multitudes" to distinguish them from "population" as a quantity) as their units of analysis, by the middle decades of the seventeenth century something much closer to the national population, as a total and knowable number of people, had come to the fore"--

It argues that previously powerful and relatively independent institutions like the news media are increasingly in a position akin to that of ordinary users-they are simultaneously increasingly empowered by and dependent upon a small number of powerful platforms"--

    Abstract: Parliament's decision in 1807 to outlaw British slaving was a key moment in modern world history. In this magisterial work, historian David Richardson challenges claims that this event was largely due to the actions of particular individuals and emphasizes instead that abolition of the British slave trade relied on the power of ordinary people to change the world. British slaving and opposition to it grew in parallel through the 1760s and then increasingly came into conflict both in the public imagination and in political discourse. Looking at the ideological tensions between Britons' sense of themselves as free people and their willingness to enslave Africans abroad, Richardson shows that from the 1770s those simmering tensions became politicized even as British slaving activities reached unprecedented levels, mobilizing public opinion to coerce Parliament to confront and begin to resolve the issue between 1788 and 1807

    Abstract: Distrust of public institutions, which reached critical proportions in Britain and the United States in the first two decades of the 21st century, was an important theme of public discourse in Britain and colonial America during the early modern period. Demonstrating broad chronological and thematic range, the historian Brian P. Levack explains that trust in public institutions is more tenuous and difficult to restore once it has been betrayed than trust in one's family, friends, and neighbours, because the vast majority of the populace do not personally know the officials who run large national institutions. Institutional distrust shaped the political, legal, economic, and religious history of England, Scotland, and the British colonies in America

    Abstract: Wenn Übersetzungszwänge zwischen sozialen Sinnhorizonten den Kardinaleffekt sozialer Differenzierung bilden, kann eine entsprechende Soziologie multipler Differenzierung ihren eigenen Realitätsbezug, wie den jedes anderen Sinnzusammenhanges, nur als eine Art »indirekter Referenz« ausweisen.Joachim Renns Analyse geht einen medientheoretischen Umweg: Sie konzentriert sich zunächst auf die Bedeutung verschiedener Kommunikationsmedien für die eigenlogische Formatierung möglicher Gegenstände der Bezugnahme und erst dann auf die Referenzansprüche der Soziologie selbst. Es zeigt sich: Diese pragmatistische Rekonstruktion einer medialen »Welt-Erschließung« wird - anders als der weit verbreitete Konstruktivismus - der realistischen Intuition einer Soziologie als empirischer Wissenschaft gerecht
    Abstract: When translation constraints between horizons of social meaning create the cardinal effect of social distinction, a pertinent sociology of multiple distinction can disclose its own reference to reality, such as that of any other context, only as a kind of »indirect reference«. Joachim Renn's analysis takes a media-theory detour: Initially it focuses on the meaning of different communication media for the formation of potential objects of reference that is logical in itself, and then it focuses on the reference claims of sociology itself. That shows: This pragmatic reconstruction of a medial »indexing of the world« does - unlike the widely-spread constructivism - justice to the realistic intuition of sociology as an empirical science

    Abstract: This timely history explores the entry, reception and resettlement of refugees across twentieth-century Britain. Focusing on four cohorts of refugees - Jewish and other refugees from Nazism; Hungarians in 1956; Ugandan Asians expelled by Idi Amin; and Vietnamese 'boat people' who arrived in the wake of the fall of Saigon - Becky Taylor deftly integrates refugee history with key themes in the history of modern Britain. She thus demonstrates how refugees' experiences, rather than being marginal, were emblematic of some of the principal developments in British society. Arguing that Britain's reception of refugees was rarely motivated by humanitarianism, this book reveals the role of Britain's international preoccupations, anxieties and sense of identity; and how refugees' reception was shaped by voluntary efforts and the changing nature of the welfare state. Based on rich archival sources, this study offers a compelling new perspective on changing ideas of Britishness and the place of 'outsiders' in modern Britain

    Abstract: "Hundreds of thousands of British and Irish men, women, and children crossed the Atlantic during the seventeenth century as indentured servants. Many had agreed to serve for four years, but large numbers had been trafficked or "spirited away" or were sent forcibly by government agencies as criminals, political rebels, or destitute vagrants. In Indentured Servitude Anna Suranyi provides new insight into the lives of these people. The British government, Suranyi argues, profited by supplying labour for the colonies, removing unwanted populations, and reducing incarceration costs within Britain. In addition, it was believed that indigents, especially destitute children, benefited morally from being placed in indenture. Capitalist entrepreneurs who were influential at the highest levels of government made their fortunes from Atlantic trade in goods, indentured servants, and slaves, and their participation in the servant trade contributed to the commercialization of criminal justice. Suranyi breaks new ground in showing how indentured servitude was challenged: once in the colonies, indentured servants adapted resourcefully to their circumstances and rebelled against unfair conditions and abuse by suing their masters, by running away, or through outright revolt. Emerging ideas about race and citizenship led to vehement public debate about the conditions of indentured servants and the ethics of indenture itself, prompting legislation that aimed to curb the worst excesses while slavery continued to expand unchecked."--

    Abstract: Netzwerke durchdringen heute nahezu jeden gesellschaftlichen Bereich, und lange Zeit galt: je vernetzter, desto besser! Diese Vernetzungseuphorie ist aber inzwischen ein Stück weit verflogen. Die ständige Erreichbarkeit fordert ihren Preis, Open-Office-Architekturen geraten zunehmend in die Kritik und neue Sicherheitsrisiken sorgen für Unruhe. Ausgehend von solchen Krisendiagnosen denkt Urs Stäheli in diesem Buch auf dreifache Weise über die Grenzen der Vernetzung nach - als Kritik an relationalen Sozialtheorien, als kultursoziologische Analyse von Figuren der Entnetzung und als genealogisch angelegte Untersuchung von Praktiken der Entnetzung in verschiedenen Feldern.     Abstract: "This book focuses on alternative types of slave narratives, especially courtroom testimony, and interrogates how such narratives were produced, the societies (both those that were majority slave societies and those in which slaves were a distinct minority of the population) in which testimony was permitted, and the meanings that can be attached to such narratives. The chapters in this book provide valuable information about the everyday lives-including the inner and spiritual lives-of enslaved African American and Native American individuals in the British and French Atlantic World, from Canada to the Caribbean. It explores slave testimony as a form of autobiographical narrative, and in ways that allow us to foreground enslaved persons' lived experience as expressed in their own words"--

Migrationsforschung als Gesellschaftsforschung verengt den Fokus nicht auf 'die Migranten', sondern untersucht Bedingungen für Zusammenleben und Lebensgestaltung zwischen Ethnisierung und Pluralisierung, Diskriminierung und Ermächtigung, Teilung und Teilhabe. Das Jahrbuch Migration und Gesellschaft wendet das Prisma der Erzählung immer wieder neu. Die Ausgabe 2019/2020 setzt den Schwerpunkt auf das Thema »Digitale Medien«.
