    Abstract: In den bisherigen Forschungen zu »muslimischen« Denkerinnen und Denkern sind die dichotomisch verwendeten Begriffe »Moderne« und »Islam« zentral. Dabei wird »Moderne« meist mit »westlich«, »säkular«, »reformerisch« und neuerdings »global« gleichgesetzt - und »Islam« mit »orientalisch«, »religiös«, »traditionell« und »partikular«.Abbas Poya nimmt einen Wechsel der »Erzählperspektive« vor. Anhand von vier gegenwärtig wichtigen iranischen Autoren - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush und Malekyan - untersucht er den Transformationsprozess in den heutigen islamisch-intellektuellen Diskursen im Lichte global vorherrschender postkolonialer Zustände und zeigt, dass ihre Gedankengänge durch die sogenannten islamischen/orientalischen Ideen ebenso geformt sind wie durch die vermeintlich säkularen/westlichen Vorstellungen
    Abstract: In previous research on »Muslim« thinkers and philosophers, the dichotomously applied terms »modern« and »Islam« are central. Therein, »modern« is mostly equated with »Western«, »secular«, »reformist«, and, most recently, »global«, whereas »Islam« is equated with »oriental«, »religious«, »traditional«, and »particular«.Abbas Poya breaks from the »narrative perspective«: On the basis of four current and important Iranian writers - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush, and Malekyan - he examines the transformation process in today's Islamic intellectual discourses in the light of global dominant post-colonial conditions and shows that the thought processes are shaped by so-called Islamic/oriental ideas as well as by supposed secular/western ideas

Since the eighteenth century in Europe, intellectuals and artists have gathered in cafes to exchange ideas, inspirations and information that has driven the cultural agenda for Europe and the world. Without the café, would there have been a Karl Marx or a Jean-Paul Sartre? The café as an institutional site has been the subject of renewed interest amongst scholars in the past decade, and its role in the development of art, ideas and culture has been explored in some detail. However, few have investigated the ways in which cafes create a cultural and intellectual space which brings together multiple influences and intellectual practices and shapes the urban settings of which they are a part. This volume brings together an international group of scholars who consider cafes as sites of intellectual discourse from across Europe during the long modern period. Drawing on literary theory, history, cultural studies and urban studies, the contributors explore the ways in which cafes have functioned and evolved at crucial moments in the histories of important cities and countries - notably Paris, Vienna and Italy. Choosing these sites allows readers to understand both the local particularities of each café while also seeing the larger cultural connections between these places. By revealing how the café operated as a unique cultural context within the urban setting, this volume demonstrates how space and ideas are connected.     Abstract: How people relate to time is one of the oldest questions of mankind. This book centers on 'life phases' to show how the life cycle is structured, and it discusses how various theological and literary models denote and divide up the different phases of life. These life-phase models reflect congruent or contrasting overall concepts of time. Using examples from texts from the Ancient Near Eastern era up to the 20th century, the contributions in the book discuss how the different life phases were construed and what potential the respective life phases offer for a time-critical reflection

    Abstract: Mittlerweile geht der Trend auch im deutschsprachigen Raum zu einer stärker differenzierten Perspektive auf die ästhetischen und politischen Potentiale der Popkultur. Dieser Entwicklung trägt der Band Rechnung. Die Beiträge befassen sich u.a. mit Popliteratur und Musikvideos, den Beatles und Hip-Hop, The Terminator und The Wrestler, Monty Python und Switch. Dabei thematisieren sie auch bislang unberücksichtigte Phänomene wie posthumanistische und Körper-Diskurse, Darstellungen des Alter(n)s und religiöse Eschatologie.     Abstract: Warenhäuser waren von Beginn an Orte, an denen moderne Konsum- und Weltverhältnisse ausgestellt und erfahrbar wurden. Damit wurden sie auch zu Kristallisationspunkten einer moralisch aufgeladenen, mit antisemitischen und misogynen Stereotypen durchsetzten Auseinandersetzung um den beginnenden Massenkonsum und die Modernisierung des Kaiserreichs.Thomas Lenz analysiert den Diskurs um Warenhaus und (Massen-)Konsum in den Wissenschaften, der Öffentlichkeit und in den Literaturen zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der soziologische Blick auf den Konsum um 1900 wird hierbei - am Beispiel der Positionen von Weber, Simmel, Sombart und Veblen - mit der Debatte um die »unerwünschte Betriebsform« Warenhaus verknüpft.

    Abstract: Environment and Society explores ways to promote the behavioural shifts necessary for creating a 'sustainable society'.     Abstract: A number of factors, from soaring fuel prices to genetically modified agricultural products, have greatly refocused worldwide attention on the interrelationship between technology and society and the necessity for sustainable engineering and business practices.     Abstract: Allmählich beginnt man zu erkennen, daß die moderne Wirkungsgeschichte des Islams wie kaum ein anderes Phänomen dazu beigetragen hat, die Grundlagen der westlichen Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften in Frage zu stellen. Die vorliegende Textsammlung beobachtet und analysiert diese Prozesse aus mehreren Perspektiven: Erstens nimmt sie die Rückwirkungen und Verunsicherungen in den Blick, die die moderne Beschäftigung mit dem Islam in bezug auf die »eigenen«, abendländischen »fundamentals«, die Wesenszüge des modernen Selbstverständnisses, auslöst. Zweitens widmet sich das Buch der Frage nach den Dynamiken und Richtungen der Globalisierung, die das Verhältnis von Islam und europäischer Moderne in Gang setzt. Drittens enthält das Buch einige Untersuchungen zu den sozialen Spannungen, die durch das Aufeinandertreffen von ideologisch politisiertem Islam und überkommener Alltagspraxis vor allem im ländlichen Ägypten entstehen. Dabei werden auch Fragen an die klassische deutsche Islamwissenschaft gestellt. Es wird diskutiert, inwieweit auf sie aufbauend die Probleme des Islams in der modernen, globalisierten Gesellschaft untersucht werden können und entsprechende Forschungsansätze entwickelt.
