Abstract: This dissertation interrogates the complexity of late 20th and early 21st century racial projects, focusing on conflict and convergence among African Americans, Cuban exiles, and Afro-Cubans in the United States. A textual analysis of the African American Miami Times and the Spanish language El Herald/El Nuevo Herald during the 1980 Mariel exodus and 1994 Balsero crisis, reveals the concerns of Miami African Americans and Cubans related to issues of race, immigration, and national belonging. The dissertation argues that the racializing discourses found in the Miami Times, which painted Cuban immigrants as an economic threat, and discourses in the Herald, which affirmed the presumed inferiority of blackness and superiority of whiteness, reproduce the centrality of ideologies of exclusivity and white supremacy in the construction of the U.S. nation. These discourses rely on three principle racializing frames: the black/white frame, the morality framing of good and bad citizens, and the native/foreigner dichotomy. Despite often antagonistic attitudes between African Americans, exile Cubans, and newer Cuban immigrants, however, the findings expose a shared underlying critique of the continued disenfranchisement of people of color. The analysis of newspaper text is supplemented by an analysis of talk, i.e., in-depth interviews conducted with black Cubans from Miami and Los Angeles, in order to understand their negotiations of the U.S. racial structure. The experiences that Afro-Cubans recount contradict the tenets of exclusivity upon which definitions of authentic" U.S. citizenship rests, and their positioning as blacks and as Cubans challenges the notion that African American and Cuban American communities are bounded, racially distinct groups. The dissertation makes the case that we must root out and expose white supremacy in all its covert manifestations, in order to understand interethnic conflict more broadly, and Black/Latino conflict specifically. Though the study focuses on Miami and Los Angeles, it has national implications, as it concerns the ways in which the power of whiteness prevails even as the nation's population shifts from majority white to "majority minority."."

Abstract: As day laborers continue to seek work in suburban communities throughout Southern California, the reaction of cities and communities to presence of this new immigrant labor group is varied and complicated. Reactionary policies representing a nativist backlash to the presence of poor Latino male immigrants within traditionally upper and middle class native populations underscore the sense of fear and loss that demographic changes create within native populations In the absence of national policy outlining the role of local government agents in the policing of immigrants, hyper-visible day laborers operating within the races spaces of Southern California bear the brunt of anti-immigrant sentiment at the local level, witnessed through the rising levels of restrictionist day labor ordinances.

Abstract: Introduction- Sexual and reproductive health problems of adolescents in Ethiopia are rising from time to time. This may be associated with early sexual initiation. Different researches done in different countries had showed that good family communication regarding sexual risk behavior has been positively associated with a delay in sexual activity. There are different factors affecting communication between parents and adolescents regarding SRH issues which are uncovered. Objective- The study is done in an attempt to identify those factors and the influence of parent-adolescent communication on sexual and reproductive health of students Methodology- A cross-sectional descriptive study involving 694 randomly selected students among four high schools in Awassa, Ethiopia. A pretested structured anonymous questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data, which was entered, cleaned and analyzed using SPSS version 11.0 statistical package. Qualitative information was obtained from four focus group discussions and sixteen peer-to-peer interviews segregated by gender. A binary logistic regression analysis was used to asses the impact of determinants. Results- Two hundred five (30.4%) of the students discussed with either of their parents in at least two topics of SRH. Nevertheless, most of the respondents preferred to discuss SRH issue with their peers/friends than their parents. 7 Mother being literate [OR=1.63; 95%CI=1.17, 2.27], adolescents' having knowledge on STI, contraceptive, fertile period during menstrual cycle and emergency contraceptive [OR=2.56; 95%CI=1.51, 4.62, OR=2.17; 95%CI= 1.32, 3.53, OR=1.57; 95%CI=1.13, 2.18 and OR=2.58 95%CI=1.84, 3.63 respectively] were associated with communication of parent and adolescents on SRH. The most reported factor that affects communication between parents and adolescents on SRH issues were shamefulness, parents' lack of knowledge and that the issue is culturally unacceptable. Both males and females were more comfortable to discuss sexual and reproductive health issues with mother. There is significant difference across gender where more females being comfortable discussion with mother [OR=2.37; 95%CI= 1.60, 3.49] Conclusion and recommendation- The overall research finding shows that communication on SRH issues promotes healthy behaviors of adolescent. Nevertheless, there is low communication between parent and adolescent on different SRH issues with different reasons for not discussing. Hence, based on the findings obtained in this study it is recommended that comprehensive family life education (FLE) should be initiated for the students and parents in school, home, religious institution, and health facilities for effective communication to occur on SRH. In addition programs working in ASRH should include parents to address parental influences on adolescents' reproductive health and work to alleviate those factors which affect communication between parent and adolescents. Additional research needs to explore the influence of parent –adolescent communication on SRH issues on adolescent reproductive health especially using analytical studies.

Abstract: Background: Emergency contraception refers to type of contraception that is used as an emergency procedure to prevent unintended pregnancy following an unprotected act of sexual intercourse. Every year, unintended pregnancies lead to at least 20 million unsafe abortions, resulting in the death of some 70,000 women. There is low utilization of emergency contraception, while awareness is relatively high. Objective: To assess Knowledge, Attitude and Practice on emergency contraception and factors influencing knowledge, attitude and practice. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted to collect data from February to March 2009. There were a total of 1091 Eligible female students (age 18 & above) in the three schools of Maichew town. Six hundred twenty three of them were sampled for the study. Self administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Result: About 15.7 % of respondents are sexually active. Forty eight percent of them were faced forced sex and unwanted pregnancy was 38.1% for those who practiced sex. From 623 respondents 285 (45.8%) have knowledge about emergency contraception; Correct timing of emergency contraception was reported only by 85 (13.6%) and 18 (2.8%) of them had ever used emergency contraception. Health professionals were main source of information 228 (80.0%) and About 178 (62.4%) of the respondents had favorable attitude towards the use of emergency contraception. Conclusion: There is high rate of unintended (forced) sex; low knowledge, attitude and utilization of emergency contraceptives among Secondary, Preparatory and TVET school female students and no favorable access to the service. Hence there is a need for collaborated effort to improve knowledge, Attitude and utilization of contraceptive methods including emergency contraception to prevent female students from life threatening behaviors and strengthening the schools reproductive health clubs by the school & the woreda health office jointly.

Abstract: Most literature on the economic crisis in indonesia has focused on the negative macro-economic impacts during the "crisis- years" of 1997-99. The case studies presented in this book take a different perspective. With a longitudinal research perspective, this comparative study analyses a wide variety of responses to the crisis among communities and households. The case studies in this book cover the coping and adapting mechanisms of rural households under a variety of resource use practices and resource use regulations in different areas of Indonesia.

Abstract: Everyone knows the thrill of being transported by a film, but what is it that makes movie watching such a compelling emotional experience? In Moving Viewers, Carl Plantinga explores this question and the implications of its answer for aesthetics, the psychology of spectatorship, and the place of movies in culture. Through an in-depth discussion of mainstream Hollywood films, Plantinga investigates what he terms "the paradox of negative emotion" and the function of mainstream narratives as ritualistic fantasies. He describes the sensual nature of the movies and shows how film emotions are often elicited for rhetorical purposes. He uses cognitive science and philosophical aesthetics to demonstrate why cinema may deliver a similar emotional charge for diverse audiences.

Abstract: Universalität der Menschenrechte oder einzelstaatliche Souveränität?
