Abstract:
„Der Politikwissenschaftler Robert Feustel unternimmt in dieser voluminösen Studie einen Rundgang durch die Epochen Europas - und beschreibt ihr jeweiliges Verhältnis zum Rausch. Im Kern steht der Zwiespalt unserer Kultur gegenüber dem Kontrollverlust... Das Wort "Rausch" bringen wir durchweg mit Drogen - und meist auch noch mit Sucht - in Verbindung... Ein zweiter Strang verfolgt das Neben- und Ineinander der verschiedenen Romantisierungen des Rauschs und des Versuchs, ihn wissenschaftlich auf den Begriff zu bringen... Den Schwerpunkt legt Feustel dann aber doch auf die - zu Unrecht pauschal - so genannten "Drogen". Eine Konstante ist, wen überrascht's, der Alkohol, der, weil legal, gemeinhin nicht als Droge zählt. Das galt durch die Jahrhunderte auch für andere Mittel, deren heilsame oder stabilisierende Wirkungen gepriesen und empfohlen wurden. Der uns heute vertraute Begriff Rauschgift verdankt sich einer ideologischen Wende Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts, die Rausch als Krankheit brandmarkte, als Verfall, und zudem eine immer schon unterstellte Sucht als Langzeitvergiftung begriff. Doch auch hier wirkte jene Ambivalenz der Erkenntnisinteressen: Der Verfall einer absurden, ja vergifteten Kultur schien Anderen durchaus wünschenswert, der Ausstieg und Einstieg in Gegenwelten, eine Gegenkultur, ein hehres Ziel.
