Abstract: Canada is a country founded on relationships and treaties between Indigenous people and newcomers. Although recent court cases have strengthened Aboriginal rights, the cooperative spirit of the treaties is being lost as Canadians engage in endless arguments about First Nations "issues." Greg Poelzer and Ken Coates breathe new life into these debates by looking at approaches that have failed and succeeded in the past and offering all Canadians - from policy makers to concerned citizens - realistic steps forward. The road ahead is clear: if all Canadians take up their responsibilities as treaty peoples, Canada will become a leader among treaty nations.

Abstract: This, the first, in-depth survey of Native American Indian foodways is an amazing chronicle of both human development over thousands of years and American history after the European invasion. It sheds light not only on this group and their history but on American food culture and history as well. For thousands of years an intimate relationship existed between Native Americans and their food sources. Dependence on nature for subsistence gave rise to a rich spiritual tradition with rituals and feasts marking planting and harvesting seasons. The European invasion forced a radical transformation of the indigenous food habits. Foodways were one of the first layers of culture attacked. Indians were removed from their homelands, forced to cultivate European crops such as wheat and grapes, new animals were introduced, and the bison, a major staple in the Great Plains and West, was wiped out. Today, American Indians are trying to reclaim many of their food traditions. A number of their foodways have become part of the broader American cookbook, as many dishes eaten today were derived from Native American cooking, including cornbread, clam chowder, succotash, grits, and western barbecue.

Abstract: "'A strange and gripping tragedy' is how Brian Moore has described the seventeenth-century confrontation of Europeans and Amerindians in his compelling novel, Black Robe. In Bitter Feast, sociologist and historian Denys Delage takes a fresh look at the struggle underlying the meeting of two civilizations on the North American continent. Both civilizations had strongly developed economic, religious, and cultural traditions. Each had something to give and something to learn, and yet one was to emerge as a powerful new force, while the other was to be shaken to its foundations." "'The race to accumulate capital drove European ships to the shores of northeastern North America,' writes Delage, 'bringing into contact two civilizations - one on the brink of the Industrial Revolution, the other still in the Stone Age.' When the first Europeans arrived, the continent's population was as great as that of Europe. Until this time, Amerindians had rarely lacked food, and had traded widely on foot and by water for the commodities they desired. Caught in the web of an unequal trading relationship where furs were exchanged for fish hooks and faith, Amerindian civilization in northeastern North America faced a challenge that set the pattern for future generations." "Finally available in English, this award-winning book presents a provocative world-system analysis of European colonization in North America as well as a sobering account of
Abstract: the impact that this colonization had on native peoples. It will be of interest to anyone looking for new ways of understanding the continent's early history - the legacy of which still has implications today."--BOOK JACKET
