Abstract: "This book uncovers the processes at play in the development of cultural policies, projects and networks in spaces at the edge of their countries, marked by their proximity with a borderline. On a subject which is studied mainly in North America and Western Europe and based on individual case studies, its originality lies in offering a comparative view on the subject, as well as in comparing a European case - the France-Germany borderlands - to a South American case - the Brazil-Uruguay borderlands. Through a multi-sited ethnographic study, it develops an analysis of the formal and informal processes and networks which sustain this cultural action, looking at the relative contribution of processes led by institutions, cultural agents and the civil society. Providing theoretical tools for the analysis of the way cultural ecosystems function in borderlands, this book is valuable reading for scholars of cultural policy, geography and arts management"--

Abstract: Peoples living on the shores of the South Atlantic during the first sixty years of the seventeenth century were confronted with challenges imposed by colonial occupation, disputes between empires and continuous warfare. While the future of the Dutch and Portuguese empires was being decided with unparalleled violence, common people faced daily challenges to survive institutional and political interests beyond their control. This book takes the perspective of individuals, families and groups of interest in their daily strive to survive a European pursuit of empire. Contributors are: Catia Antunes, Francisco Bethencourt, Filipa Ribeiro da Silva, Jose Manuel Santos-Perez, Marco Antonio Nunes da Silva, Bruno Romero Ferreira Miranda, Anne B. McGinness, Thiago Nascimento Krause, Christopher Ebert, and Amelia Polonia

Abstract: Klappentext: "Oktoberfest in Brazil: Domestic Tourism, Sensescapes, and German Brazilian Identity is one of the first ethnographies to critically analyze Brazil's European-heritage tourism industry. Southern Brazil's booming domestic tourism industry draws more than 500,000 people to events such as Oktoberfest in Blumenau, the site of Audrey Ricke's fieldwork. Ricke's unique contribution is investigation of domestic tourism as "sensescapes" for citizens of different regions and backgrounds. The sensescapes concept encapsulates an experience beyond the visual. Ricke also introduces the economy of aesthetics framework to capture how the sensescapes associated with domestic tourism are mobilized to negotiate ethnic, national, and transnational identities. The pathway through such sensescapes involves intersections with discourses on class and race as well. Case studies are the German Brazilian home garden/landscape, Oktoberfest, and folk dancing. These sensory-rich "contact zones" provide access to different perspectives and types of identity negotiation at multiple levels. Ricke analyzes each practice to show how they emanate a German Brazilian warmth, joy, and welcome, which counter an image of Germans being cold and aloof and align better with national imaginaries of being Brazilian. This book also provides historical and contemporary insights into the politics of citizenship associated with cultural heritage. As politics become more polarized in Brazil and elsewhere, Ricke notes that the need to find new means of communication, such as sensory experiences from domestic tourism, increases. Through identifying how this takes place, such understanding can highlight the strengths and weaknesses of tourism ventures for promoting inclusion and national belonging and contribute to the design of equity and inclusion policies"--

Abstract: "This book examines the Brazilian political process in the period of 2003-2020: the governments led by the Workers' Party and their reformist policies, the deep political crisis that led to the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff and the rise of Bolsonaro neofascism. The author maintains that the Party and ideological conflicts present in the Brazilian politics are linked to the class distributive conflicts present in the Brazilian society. Defeated for the fourth consecutive time in the presidential election, the political parties representing the international capital and segments of the bourgeoisie and of the middle class, abandoned the rules of the democratic game to end the Workers' Party government cycle. They paved the way for the rise of neofascism"--

Abstract: "This book argues for the study of consumption and its relationship with media images, particularly advertising, from a cultural perspective. Focused on Brazil, it draws on decades of research by the author and engages with theory and concepts from a range of classic anthropological works. The chapters examine how advertising professionals view their craft, the resistance to capitalism amongst native Brazilians, images of women and their bodies in magazines, and the case of the first soccer player to become a national media celebrity. Rocha supports the study of consumption as a classification system that materializes culture and creates relations between people and goods. The book presents advertising as a mode of magical thinking that mediates the passage from the machine-driven sphere of production to the humanized sphere of consumption, converting meaningless impersonal things into goods that have name, origin, identity and purpose. It will be of interest to anthropologists, sociologists and others working on advertising, marketing, communications, and consumer research."

Abstract: Chapter 1: Latin American integration: a Brazilian view -- Chapter 2: Brazilian thought and regional integration in the 20th century -- Chapter 3: The role of regional integration for Brazil: autonomy, universalism, and the elite´s perception -- Chapter 4: The social Mercosur -- Chapter 5: The Mercosur structural dimension: economic and political/diplomatic features -- Chapter 6: Mercosur, Unasul, and CELAC relations -- Final considerations: What is the future of the Mercosur? Where did it come from, where is it, and where is it headed? Main challenges.
Abstract: This book analyzes regional integration in South America with a focus on the Mercosur and Brazilian foreign policy from the 1990s. It reviews the history of the Mercosur and identifies the results achieved by the bloc, as well as the causes of difficulties and the reasons for stalemates over nearly 30 years of its existence. The authors identify the complex interrelation between domestic and foreign factors that have shaped Brazilian foreign policy. From 1991 onwards, relations between Latin American countries have changed while the Mercosur developed from a free trade area to a customs union. While intrabloc trade grew, there were huge difficulties in the form of regional institutional affirmation and cooperation. This history is of the utmost importance to understanding regionalism and politics in Latin America. The book therefore has two interrelated analytical dimensions: namely, focus on ideas and identity; and behavior, actions, and economic and political interests. This very topical book is of interest for researchers and students of Brazilian foreign policy and those of Latin American and/or Mercosur countries. Particularly, readers interested in regionalism will find important theoretical and empirical elements in this book, as well as discussions necessary for comprehending the role of big, emerging countries, and the potential and limits to their international role.

Abstract: "Since the late twentieth century, mainstream popular culture in Brazil has developed an intimate relationship with fitness culture-a vast, fluid, and pervasive network of images and commodities, bodies of knowledge, and discourses pertaining to idealized corporality and personhood. Embodying Modernity works toward a conceptualization of fitness culture, tracing its development and locating its broad existence in the contemporary Brazilian public sphere. Silva examines the role of fitness culture and the visualization of "fit bodies" within the history of western imperialism and its existing discourses of white supremacy, gender binarism, patriarchy, ableism, and heterosexism that continue to define Brazilian nationhood and power structures. Fitness culture in Brazil has developed within and through projects of national modernity and modernization carried out by national elites looking to build a national population aligned with Eurocentric cultural practices and notions of normative bodies"--

Abstract: How Brazilian favela residents engage with and appropriate technologies, both to fight the oppression in their lives and to represent themselves in the world. Brazilian favelas are impoverished settlements usually located on hillsides or the outskirts of a city. In Technology of the Oppressed, David Nemer draws on extensive ethnographic fieldwork to provide a rich account of how favela residents engage with technology in community technology centers and in their everyday lives. Their stories reveal the structural violence of the information age. But they also show how those oppressed by technology don't just reject it, but consciously resist and appropriate it, and how their experiences with digital technologies enable them to navigate both digital and nondigital sources of oppression—and even, at times, to flourish. Nemer uses a decolonial and intersectional framework called Mundane Technology as an analytical tool to understand how digital technologies can simultaneously be sites of oppression and tools in the fight for freedom. Building on the work of the Brazilian educator and philosopher Paulo Freire, he shows how the favela residents appropriate everyday technologies—technological artifacts (cell phones, Facebook), operations (repair), and spaces (Telecenters and Lan Houses)—and use them to alleviate the oppression in their everyday lives. He also addresses the relationship of misinformation to radicalization and the rise of the new far right. Contrary to the simplistic techno-optimistic belief that technology will save the poor, even with access to technology these marginalized people face numerous sources of oppression, including technological biases, racism, classism, sexism, and censorship. Yet the spirit, love, community, resilience, and resistance of favela residents make possible their pursuit of freedom.

Abstract: Klappentext: Retratos do Brasil na Alemanha.

Abstract: "In this book, Roberto Saba investigates how the antislavery struggle led Brazil and the United States to cooperate, and how this dynamic collaboration helped establish capitalism and free wage labor as the norm in the Western world. Drawing on overlooked writings from entrepreneurs, scientists, planters, Confederate refugees in Brazil, and journalists, Saba's extensive research reveals that while United States Southerners terrified Brazil with aggressive projects to perpetuate and expand slave labor, reform-minded Brazilians-including slaveholders looked to the American North as a powerful instrument of state- and nation-building. They welcomed advocates from the northern United States who helped them to spread labor-saving machinery, expand large-scale coffee production, advance technical education, diversify economic activities, develop urban centers, and expand transportation infrastructure. Saba shows that the binational collaboration of radical modernizers in the United States and Brazil transformed the political economy of both countries, consolidated wage labor as the dominant production system in the Western hemisphere, and laid the groundwork for the demise of Brazilian slavery and the expansion of American capitalism"--

Abstract: This book presents the first in-depth academic investigation published in English about one of the most radical incarnations of the current global wave of new right-wing movements and governments: the movement that brought to power the current Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro. The rise of this new right-wing movement in Brazil came as a surprise to many analysts who used to see the country as a successful example of the implementation of progressive social policies in the first decade of the 21st century, and posed many questions to those seeking to understand the role Brazil now plays in the development of this international far-right wave. The authors of this volume try to answer some of these questions by presenting the results of an extensive field research conducted over the years with Bolsonaro supporters and members of the new Brazilian right-wing movements. They have analyzed quantitative and especially qualitative data to accompany the accelerated transformations of the Brazilian public sphere, starting from small liberal and conservative groups on social media towards larger audiences via book publishing, the education system, the mainstream media, and the political-party system. By framing the Brazilian case in the wider international political scenario, The Bolsonaro Paradox: The Public Sphere and Right-Wing Counterpublicity in Contemporary Brazil will be an invaluable resource for sociologists, political scientists, international relations scholars and other social scientists – as well as to journalists and political analysts – interested in better understanding the role Brazil plays in the global rise of new far-right movements and governments. Abstract: This monograph focuses on the current boom in Indigenous contemporary art in Brazil, exploring in particular the way that this work interfaces with the art world through exhibitions, and the scope that there is for Indigenous curatorial agency in this relationship. After a brief introduction to Indigenous art, it gives an overview of the evolving relationship between Indigenous art and the art world, exploring in particular the nature of decolonial and/or Indigenous curatorial practice both in Brazil and elsewhere in the world. It then hones in on a recent exhibition: 'Arte Eletrônica Indígena' [Indigenous Electronic Art], held at the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia in Salvador in August 2018. Based on participant observation and interviews, it provides an ethnographic reading of the opening weekend of the exhibition, looking at the alternative modalities of Indigenous curatorial agency that were exercised by the Indigenous people present. The conclusion explores the legacy of the 'Arte Eletrônica Indígena' exhibition, particularly for the Indigenous communities involved, and looks to the evidence provided by the exhibition for lessons to be learned for future exhibitions.

Abstract: "Brazilian Mobilities presents an overview of the diversity of Mobility studies developed in Brazil, it builds a picture of a strong Latin-American perspective emerging in the field of mobilities research, which provides unique insight into the complex dynamics of mobilities in the emerging countries from the Global South. Addressing such different areas as Tourism, Urbanisation, Media Studies, Social Inequalities, Marketing and Mega-events, Transport and Technology, among others, the contributors use the New Mobilities Paradigm- NMP (Sheller & Urry, 2006) as a starting point to reflect about the social changes experienced in the country and they also engage with newer literature on mobilities, including work done by Brazilian and Latin-American authors depending on the subject of each individual chapter. Illustrating to scholars the uniqueness and complexity of the Brazilian social-political and economic context, the book was organized in order to be a representative sample of the studies carried in Brazil, as well as to contribute to other academic investigations on (im)mobilities and different social realities in emerging countries."

Abstract: "The Things of Others: Ethnographies, Histories, and Other Artefacts deals with the things mainly, but not only, mobilized by anthropologists in order to produce knowledge about the African American, the Afro-Brazilian and the Afro-Cuban during the 1930s. However, the book's goal is not to dig up evidence of the creation of an epistemology of knowledge and its transnational connections. The research on which this book is based suggests that the artefacts created in fieldwork, offices, libraries, laboratories, museums, and other places and experiences - beyond the important fact that these places and situations involved actors other than the anthropologists themselves - have been different things during their troubled existence. The book seeks to make these differences apparent, highlighting rather than concealing the relationships between partial modes of making and being 'Afro' as a subject of science. If the artefacts created in a variety of situations have been different things, we should ask what sort of things they were and how the actors involved in their creation sought to make them meaningful. The book foregrounds these discontinuous and ever-changing contours."

Abstract: Parenting empires : the moral economy of wealth, privilege, and austerity in Brazil and Puerto Rico -- The feel of Ipanema : social history and structure of feeling in Rio de Janeiro -- Parenting El Condado : social history and immaterial materiality in San Juan -- Whiteness from within : elite interiority, personhood, and parenthood -- Schooling whiteness : adult friendships, social ease, and the privilege of choosing race -- The extended family : intimate hierarchies and the moral economy of wealth -- Affective inequalities : childcare workers and elite consumptions of blackness.
Abstract: "PARENTING EMPIRES is a comparative ethnography of wealthy white parents in two Latin American residential neighborhoods -- Ipanema, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and El Condado, in San Juan, Puerto Rico -- located within two of the world's most unequal 'nations.' Although on the surface elite parents in these neighborhoods appear to be concerned with cultivating a multicultural cosmopolitanism, Ana Ramos-Zayas reveals how their parenting strategies, which employ spirituality, therapeutic language, and emphasize emotional intelligence and equality, allow them to preserve their white privilege. She defines this moral economy that maintains class and racial inequality by promoting psycho-social development as 'sovereign parenting.' In this way, Ramos-Zayas sheds light on the diverse layers of power and influence that elites hold in the Global South and how they ultimately remain complicit with rather than challenge broader nation-state projects that sustain racial hierarchies. After an introduction which charts the book's conceptual frameworks, chapters 2 and 3 explore the history, built environment, and political economy of both Ipanema and El Condado. For each of the two neighborhoods, Ramos-Zayas identifies places where parents come together across ethnoracial, class, and regional lines-what she calls 'child-centered nodules of urbanism.' Chapters 4 and 5 examine interiority capital, or the cultivation of psychological depth, emotional vocabularies, and spiritual formations among the elite and their parenting strategies. The final three chapters reveal how sovereign parenting fosters a moral framework for wealth in a context of extreme inequity. Through this framework, elites position themselves in relation to ethno-racial and regional Others, while also translating neoliberal state politics into austerity subjectivities. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in sociology, urban studies, critical ethnic studies, and Latin American studies"--

Abstract: Why do governance reforms in developing democracies so often fail, and when might they succeed? When Democracies Deliver offers a dynamic framework for assessing the effectiveness and durability of policy change. Drawing on detailed analyses of public sector reforms in Brazil and Argentina, this book challenges conventional wisdom to reveal that incremental changes sequenced over time prove more effective in promoting accountability, increasing transparency, and strengthening institutions than comprehensive overhauls pushed through by political will. Developing an innovative theory that integrates cognitive-psychological insights about decision making with research on institutional change, Katherine Bersch shows how political and organizational factors can shape reform strategies and information processing. Through extensive interviews and field research, Bersch traces how two competing strategies have determined the different trajectories of institutions responsible for government contracting in health care and transportation. When Democracies Deliver offers a fresh insight on the perils of powering and the benefits of gradual reform

Abstract: Inhaltsverzeichnis: Communist racial democracy in the 1930s -- Embattled images of racial democracy : state anticommunism in the 1930s -- Presaging the war : racial democracy and fascism in the 1930s -- State cultural production, black cultural demarginalization, and racial democracy in the 1930s -- The centrality of race and democracy in the U.S.-Brazil wartime alliance -- A partnership in cultural production : the Brazil-United States racial democracy exchange -- Wartime racial democracy at home : domestic pressures and in-house propaganda.
Abstract: "This book offers a historical analysis of one of the most striking and dramatic transformations to take place in Brazil and the United States during the twentieth century--the redefinition of the concepts of nation and democracy in racial terms. The multilateral political debates that occurred between 1930 and 1945 pushed and pulled both states towards more racially inclusive political ideals and nationalisms. Both countries utilized cultural production to transmit these racial political messages. At times working collaboratively, Brazilian and U.S. officials deployed the concept of "racial democracy" as a national security strategy, one meant to suppress the existential threats perceived to be posed by World War II and by the political agendas of communists, fascists, and blacks. Consequently, official racial democracy was limited in its ability to address racial inequities in the United States and Brazil. Shifting the Meaning of Democracy helps to explain the historical roots of a contemporary phenomenon: the coexistence of widespread antiracist ideals with enduring racial inequality"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: "Why do governance reforms in developing democracies so often fail, and when might they succeed? When Democracies Deliver offers a fresh insight on the perils of powering and the benefits of gradual reform"--

Abstract: This book explores the proliferation and spread of Brazilian-born religious forms and practices throughout the world. The global diffusion of Brazilian religions provides an excellent lens to understand contemporary religious forms. As the book shows, religious movements as diverse as Santo Daime, Candomblé, Capoeira, John of God, and Brazilian style Pentecostalism and Catholicism, have become immensely popular in many places outside Brazil. This global spread is not merely the result of Brazilian migrants taking their religions abroad, it is also due to global media and to spiritual seekers, travelling to and from Brazil. Global Trajectories of Brazilian Religion demonstrates that in a dynamic space of historical and cultural production, Brazil is imagined and re-created as an authentic, spiritual, and sensualplace that functions as the center for various global religions. To understand the new cross-fertilizations between religion, life-style, tourism and migration, this book introduces the notion of 'Lusospheres', a term that refers to the historical Portuguese colonial reach, yet signals the contemporary modes of cultural interaction in a different geo-political age
