Abstract: "Each year, approximately a million tourists visit slum areas on guided tours as a part of their holiday to Asia, Africa or Latin America. This book analyses the cultural encounters that take place between slum tourists and former street children, who work as tour guides for a local NGO in Delhi, India. Slum tours are typically framed as both tourist performances, bought as commodities for a price on the market, and as appeals for aid that tourists encounter within an altruistic discourse of charity. This book enriches the tourism debate by interpreting tourist performances as affective economies, identifying tour guides as emotional labourers and raising questions on the long-term impacts of economically unbalanced encounters with representatives of the Global North, including the researcher. This book studies the 'feeling rules' governing a slum tour and how they shape interactions. When do guides permit tourists to exoticise the slum and feel a thrilling sense of disgust towards the effects of abject poverty, and when do they instead guide them towards a sense of solidarity with the slum's inhabitants? What happens if the tourists rebel and transgress the boundaries delimiting the space of comfortable affective negotiation constituted by the guides? This book will be essential reading for undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers working within the fields of Human Geography, Slum Tourism Research, Subaltern Studies and Development Studies"--
Abstract: Slum tourism, subalternity and gentrification -- The authentic slum or former street-children as prisms of authenticity? -- Playing with privilege? The ethics of aestheticizing the slum -- The affective economy of slum tourism -- The post-humanitarian logic of slum tourism -- The emotional labour of CW-guides -- The economy of resocialisation : the slumming researcher?

Abstract: "Humor and Violence examines the rich history of portraying Europeans in Central African art in images ranging from heart-wrenching scenes of human trafficking to playful parodies of colonialists. Z. S. Strother contends that the dialectic of humor and violence reveals deep insights into the psychology of power and resistance that continues to operate in the region today. Her argument is built on a set of works of art and demonstrates the important role that patronage and political and social history played in their creation. Strother conveys Central African ideas about how the therapeutic power of humor can initiate social change and upset power relations between oppressors and oppressed. This analysis plunges seemingly benign figures into a maelstrom of violence and crime -- rape, murder, torture, and forced labor on a massive scale. By restoring the dialectic of humor, this study reveals the complicated psychological codependency of Africans and Europeans over a long period of history and maintains that art plays a mediating function in the mechanics and ethics of power."--Front cover flap

Abstract: "The Qaraqalpaqs are a Turkic minority inhabiting the huge southern delta of the former Aral Sea. In recent decades, however, their lands have been turned into desert as the sea itself became desiccated--one of the major environmental disasters of our generation. The Qaraqalpaqs had a thriving artistic culture, and this rigorously researched volume introduces Western readers for the first time to the vibrant textiles, costumes, weavings, jewelery, and furnishings of this formerly nomadic people. Filled with photographs taken on location in the yurts in which the Qaraqalpaqs once lived and from museum collections in Qaraqalpaqstan and Russia, many of which are previously unpublished, the book aims to sweep away the myths surrounding their history and culture. The dazzling objects reproduced in this book demonstrate that the Qaraqalpaqs' folk art is every bit as fascinating and worthy as that of their better-known neighbors, the Qazaks, Uzbeks, and Turkmen"--Publisher's web site

Abstract: "A World of Necklaces, like a World of Rings, A World of Earrings and A World of Bracelets, is further evidence of the importance and variety of the remarkable Ghysels collection of ethnic jewellery. The collection attests to the rigour and taste with which each item was selected during a long quest in pursuit of the most beautiful, authentic and original pieces of jewellery. The forms, colours and materials of these necklaces never cease to astonish and enchant, and the modernity of certain pieces has not escaped the notice of contemporary jewellers. The book takes us on a long journey from Africa to Asia, and Oceania to America." "Describing necklaces means entering a universe that is both feminine and masculine. Although generally only women wear necklaces, as in the Maghreb, in other societies like the Fulani-Bororo of Mali, men paint and adorn themselves, for ritual ceremonies, as well. The inherited function of jewellery in these traditional societies helps to explain these differing attitudes. Jewellery rarely serves a solely aesthetic purpose as it is primarily moored in the social, religious and political contexts which lend it meaning. In North Africa, for example, necklaces constitute part of a bride's dowry, but in most Oceanic societies they can serve as the stakes in an extremely sophisticated bartering system. Furthermore, it is sometimes difficult for us to imagine that in the practice of ancient Hinduism, devotees might hang their most precious jewellery on trees next to the temple of their chosen god." "Throughout this book the author endeavours to unravel the intricate uses of these necklaces, describes their materials, and emphasizes the originality of artisans who have enriched a cultural patrimony long threatened by extinction, which the Ghysels collection is helping to preserve." "The book includes more than 350 annotated photographs, a glossary, an index, maps and a general bibliography."--Jacket
