Abstract: "This book is about transitional periods of cultural and environmental change as seen through the lenses of archaeology and ethnography. Incorporating data from across six continents and tracing the human experience from the Late Pleistocene to the present, these chapters offer a global comparative perspective on transitional states. Questions of causality are considered, as are hypotheses about the processes of cultural change. Archaeology on the Threshold focuses on major transitions such as the shift from foraging to agriculture, the adoption of new technologies, the emergence of large-scale societies, the transition from egalitarian to inegalitarian leadership, and changes that occur in socioeconomic and ideological systems as a result of climate change and disease. Theoretical approaches range from processual to postprocessual, humanistic, and interpretive. Methodologies include ethnoarchaeology, the use of ethnographic analogy, cross-cultural comparisons and large-scale data approaches, oral history, the historical record, participant observation, and focus group discussions"--

Abstract: Law is culture, and culture is law. Given by the ancestors and cultivated over millennia, Indigenous law defines what it is to be human. Complex and evolving, law holds the keys to resilient, caring communities and a life in balance with nature. Marcia Langton and Aaron Corn show how Indigenous law has enabled people to survive and thrive in Australia for more than 2000 generations. Nurturing people and places, law is the foundation of all Indigenous societies in Australia, giving them the tools to respond and adapt to major environmental and social changes. But law is not a thing of the past. These living, sophisticated systems are as powerful now as they have ever been, if not more so. Law: The Way of the Ancestors challenges readers to consider how Indigenous law can inspire new ways forward for us all in the face of global crises

Abstract: "In Terracene, Salar Mameni shows how the racialized construction of terror in the Western political imagination and critical discourse concerning the threat of anthropogenic climate change have developed in conjunction with one another. Through the logic of the Anthropocene, ecological catastrophe has become enclosed within state discourse on terror, and natural disasters, viruses, pollution and other "non-human" dangers have been conflated with the threat of political violence by the "less-than-human" racialized other. Terracene challenges this false equivalence by examining how West Asian artists and knowledge producers confront the "weaponized ecologies" of their homelands and discover ways of living with what Mameni calls terrans-"the mountains, wetlands, viruses, smoke plumes, mutated cells and crude oil" that make up our world"--

Abstract: "The first major catalogue of contemporary Black American collage, Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Art brings together over sixty-five works of art by fifty artists that reflect the breadth and complexity of Black identity. Rather than casting their work solely in terms of a racial discourse that often portrays African Americans as a monolith, these artists employ collage to convey the intersecting facets of their lived experiences that combine to make whole individuals. Building on a technique that has roots in European and American traditions-used by canonical figures from Picasso and Hannah Höch to Robert Rauschenberg and Romare Bearden-the artists have assembled pieces of paper, photographs, fabrics, and other often salvaged materials to create unified compositions that express the endless possibilities of Black-constructed narratives despite the fragmentation of our times. As artist Deborah Roberts asserts, "With collage, I can create a more expansive and inclusive view of the Black cultural experience." In addition to eight scholarly essays, the book features 140 color images of work by artists including McArthur Binion, Mark Bradford, Zoë Charlton, Tomashi Jackson, Arthur Jafa, Rashid Johnson, Yashua Klos, Kerry James Marshall, Wangechi Mutu, Lovie Olivia, Ebony Patterson, Howardena Pindell, Jamea Richmond-Edwards, Deborah Roberts, Tschabalala Self, Devan Shimoyama, David Shrobe, Lorna Simpson, Nyugen Smith, Paul Anthony Smith, Mickalene Thomas, Kara Walker, and others. Short biographies written by honor students at Fisk University accompany each artist's entry, concluding a comprehensive and inclusive look at collage today"--

Abstract: "In Fugitive Time, Matthew Omelsky theorizes the embodied experience of time in twentieth- and twenty-first-century black artforms from across the world. Through the lens of time, he charts the sensations and coursing thoughts that accompany desires for freedom as they appear in the work of artists as varied as Toni Morrison, Yvonne Vera, Aimé Césaire, and Issa Samb. "Fugitive time" names a distinct utopian desire directed at the anticipated moment when the body and mind have been unburdened of the violence that has consumed black life globally for centuries, bringing with it a new form of being. Omelsky shows how fugitive time is not about attaining this transcendent release, but instead sustaining the idea of it as an ecstatic social gathering. From the desire for ethereal queer worlds in the Black Audio Film Collective's Twilight City to Sun Ra's transformation of nineteenth-century scientific racism into an insurgent fugitive aesthetic, Omelsky shows how fugitive time evolves and how it remains a dominant form of imagining freedom in global black cultural expression"--

Abstract: An den Kunsthochschulen der DDR studierten ausländische Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus den Sozialistischen Bruderländern wie Ägypten, Äthiopien, Israel oder Uruguay.

Abstract: "Black Artists in America: From Civil Rights to the Bicentennial explores African American art during the turbulence of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The catalogue considers the various ways in which African American artists responded to growing civil unrest, challenging the cultural, environmental, political, racial, and social issues of the era. In the 1960s, Black artists who came of age during World War II and the increasing civil rights activity of the 1950s continued to challenge inequities in the art world. They created works that celebrated their racial identity, communicated with Black audiences, and participated in the struggle for political, economic, and social equality. The establishment of artist collectives such as Spiral and museums devoted to Black art, including the Studio Museum in Harlem, alongside the emergence of art historians and critics like David Driskell and Linda Goode Bryant, marked early steps to bring Black art into broader artistic discourse. In addition to 140 full-color images of approximately seventy paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from public and private collections across the country, the catalogue features in-depth essays, including original research on artists James Porter and Merton Simpson"--

Abstract: "This volume examines the critical factors and processes by which the Provisional Irish Republican movement campaign from 1969 to 1998 transformed a once acquiescent nationalist population in Northern Ireland into a counterpublic of resistance demanding national self-determination and social justice. Considering the establishment of Irish republican community institutions, prison protests, Republican feminism, and Provisional IRA media and communications, this volume explores the emergence of republicanism as a mass social movement in the nationalist Catholic ghettos and rural regions of Northern Ireland in the 1970s - a development that helped to sustain the armed struggle of the Provisional Irish Republican Army for three decades. An examination of the emergence and transformative power of the counterpublic discourse and action of the Irish republican movement, this volume provides a framework for conceptualizing counterpublics in social movement studies. As such it will appeal to scholars of sociology, history, and politics with interests in social movements and mobilization"--

Olympiade in München nachhaltig entfalten. Das war die große Vision der Planer. Begeistert entwickelte die damalige internationale Avantgarde – darunter Walter de Maria, Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol oder Dan Flavin – dafür revolutionäre Konzepte. Vieles blieb Entwurf. Abstract: "This illustrated nonfiction anthology is a collection of stories and recipes about antiracism from 21 North American children's authors."--
Abstract: "What if talking about racism was as easy as baking a cake, frying plantains or cooking rice? The Antiracist Kitchen: 21 Stories (and Recipes) is a celebration of food, family, activism and resistance in the face of racism. In this anthology featuring stories and recipes from 21 diverse and award-winning North American children's authors, the authors share the role of food in their lives and how it has helped fight discrimination, reclaim culture and celebrate people with different backgrounds. They bring personal and sometimes difficult experiences growing up as racialized people. Chopped, seared, marinated and stewed, The Antiracist Kitchen highlights the power of sitting down to share a meal and how that simple act can help bring us all together." --

Abstract: This edited collection is one of the few sociological and anthropological studies of Halal markets. The chapters inquire into the legal and religious aspects of Halal markets in non-Muslim contexts or the countries where the label 'Halal' matters, and is not taken for granted as it is the case in most of the Muslim world where it is an accepted norm. In many countries, 'Halal' has become a type of brand used to market food and cosmetic products. This is an effective marketing strategy because it appeals directly to Muslims, but also increasingly to non-Muslims who seek pure, fresh products. In this case 'Halal' implies attributes similar to other brands where quality and purity is guaranteed, such as Fair Trade, Bio or organic in the US and Europe, but with the additional appeal to prospective Muslim consumers that it satisfies Islamic norms. The book consists of contributions on Halal economies in non-Muslim societies dealing with such dilemmas as rational thinking and halal philosophy within various fields of halal economy such as regulation, production, marketing, service delivery and consumption. Rano Turaeva is a Habilitating Candidate at the Ludwig Maximillian University and an associated researcher at Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle Saale, Germany. Michael Brose is Professor of Practice, Central Eurasian Studies, at Indiana University, UK. He researches, publishes and teaches in two areas of Chinese history and society, Mongol China social history, and the history and current role of Islam in South West China.

Abstract: "Over the course of the past century, there has been a sustained reflective engagement about environmental risks, disasters, and human vulnerability in the technocene (a term used by some humanist scholars to characterize the era in which we live, characterized by complex technologies with accompanying hazards that can potentially harm human societies and their living environments on historically unprecedented scales). This inquiry has raised a host of crucial questions. Just how safe in humanity is in a world of toxic chemicals and industrial installations that have destructive potential? What are the discordant consequences of the transformations of the natural world by twentieth century technologies? To what extent is it feasible to contain chemical, nuclear, and other pollutants? Is it at all possible to prevent runaway disasters in highly complex industrial technoscapes? In what way do environmental hazards impact social and political orders? The purpose of this essay is to help scholars and indeed ordinary citizens not versed in the extent literature in scientific, public policy and humanistic genres, understand their social theoretic import"--

Abstract: Borders of Desire is a collection of studies from the eastern borders of Europe, particularly the Baltics and the Balkans, that take a novel approach to borders and the work they do. Instead of viewing borders only as obstructions to the fulfillment of desire, this book shows how borders produce desire, particularly gendered and sexualized desire.

Abstract: he book deals with the concept of urban infrastructure and the strong evolution of globalization, in particular the driving force taken by global cities. Urban infrastructure is a constituent part of the global cities, both have a synergistic evolution. The main reference is to western global cities in the intertwining of financialization, settling and brownfield which is a little different from the urbanization of other global cities of other non- developed countries, or emerging countries. There is therefore a significant link between globalization and urban infrastructure. The occurrence of slowbalization can have consequences on urban areas infrastructures and more generally on the different dichotomy between global city and nation. With the pandemic infectious and the post COVID, there is already a different configuration between the global city and the rest of the national territory. A driving element of the urban infrastructure and the global city has been the financialization and identification of assets within global cities. Urban infrastructure as an asset has grown considerably in the last two decades, in the wake of what has already been highlighted previously for real estate. There are contiguous issues that affect the concept of urban infrastructures and they are the enormous growth of finance and the landings of this in the great cities of the world with investments that first involved Real Estate and then urban infrastructures. There has also been a technological revolution that has merged the ubiquitous technological infrastructure with other more traditional components of the infrastructure, even apparently recent themes, such as smart cities, come from this evolutionary trend and merge with urban infrastructures. The theme of smart cities, if properly interpreted, gives strength to the concept of urban infrastructure

Abstract: Spanning over two centuries from around 1800 to the present day, Black American Portraits chronicles the ways in which Black Americans have used portraiture to envision themselves in their own eyes. Remembering Two Centuries of Black American Art, curated by David C. Driskell at LACMA 45 years ago, this book is a companion to the exhibition of the same name that reframes portraiture to center Black American subjects, sitters and spaces. This selection of approximately 140 works from LACMA's permanent collection highlights emancipation, scenes from the Harlem Renaissance, portraits from the Civil Rights and Black Power eras, multiculturalism of the 1990s and the spirit of Black Lives Matter.0Countering a visual culture that often demonizes Blackness and fetishizes the spectacle of Black pain, these images center love, abundance, family, community and exuberance. Black American Portraits depicts Black figures in a range of mediums such as painting, drawing, prints, photography, sculpture, mixed media and time-based media. In addition to work by artists of African descent, Black American Portraits includes several works by artists of other backgrounds who have exemplified a thoughtfulness about, sensitivity toward and commitment to Black artists, communities, histories and subjects.00Exhibition: Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), LA, USA (07.11.2021-07.04.2022)

Abstract: "Moving the museum : indigenous & Canadian Art at the AGO documents the reopening of the J.S. McLean Centre for Indigenous & Canadian Art with a renewed focus on the AGO's Indigenous art collection. The volume reflects the nation to nation treaty relationship that is the foundation of Canada, asking questions, discovering truths, and leading conversations that address the weight of history. Lavishly illustrated with more than 100 reproductions, Indigenous & Canadian Art at the AGO features the work of First Nations artists--including Carl Beam, Rebecca Belmore, and Kent Monkman--along with work by Inuit artists like Shuvinai Ashoona and Annie Pootoogook. Canadian artists include Lawren Harris, Kazuo Nakamura, Joyce Wieland, and many others. Drawing from stories about our origins and identities, the featured artists and essayists invite readers to engage with issues of land, water, transformation, and sovereignty and to contemplate the historic representation of Indigenous and Canadian art in museums. Contains a list of works at the back."--

Abstract: This timely book provides a methodological guide for how to conduct and theorise research in human-animal studies. In response to critiques of the anthropomorphic slant to human-animal research and the increasing political relevance of animals in contemporary environmental debates, this book emphasises methods which bring to light the animal side of multispecies encounters. Drawing from the interdisciplinary strength of human-animal studies, this book contains contributions from practitioners and scholars working in sociology, anthropology, ethology and geography. Each chapter uses a case-study approach to present a theoretical framework and empirical application of cutting-edge methods in human-animal studies, from creative writing in multispecies ethnographies to visual methods like videography and body mapping. Organized in three parts - theorizing; collaborating; visualizing -the book equips readers with methodological tools to conduct human-animal studies research attentive to animal lives. Furthermore, chapters reflect on the opportunities, limitations and ethical considerations of research that seeks to understand our more-than-human worlds. The book is aimed towards undergraduate and graduate students in human-animal studies and scholars investigating human-animal relations. It will also be of interest to practitioners and policy-makers who engage with conservation, wildlife management or the human-animal interface of urban and regional planning.

Abstract: "In 2007, Canada became the third largest producer of diamonds in the world. Primarily mined on the edge of the Arctic, these diamonds are said to bring economic development and opportunity to nearby Indigenous communities. In Under Pressure, anthropologist Lindsay A. Bell examines the effects of diamond mining on an increasingly diverse northern population. Through an ethnographic focus on everyday life in Hay River, a multi-ethnic town in the Northwest Territories, this book illustrates the different ways Indigenous, settler, and immigrant northerners navigate the opportunities and obstacles created by large-scale resource development. By situating contemporary diamond mines within the long history of extraction in the region, Bell describes the social, cultural, and economic pressures that shape the people in this Northern community. In contrast to many polarizing accounts that deem mining as either good or bad, Under Pressure uses diamonds as an anthropological prism to consider larger issues related to Arctic extraction, globalization, Indigenous rights, and ethical consumption."-- Provided by publisher.

Abstract: "Examining the writings of the medium and "rough metaphysician" Jane Roberts (1929-1984), Skafish questions what outsider thinkers teach us about the limitations of even our most critical intellectual habits. Seductively written and surprising in its turns of thought, Rough Metaphysics calls for a new way of doing (and undoing) philosophy through anthropology, and vice versa"-- Provided by publisher. "A powerful case for why anthropology should study outsiders of thought and their speculative ideas What sort of thinking is needed to study anomalies in thought? In this trenchantly argued and beautifully written book, anthropologist Peter Skafish explores this provocative question by examining the writings of the medium and "rough metaphysician" Jane Roberts (1929-1984). Through a close interpretation of her own published texts as well as those she understood herself to have dictated for her cohort of channeled personalities-including one, named "Seth," who would inspire the New Age movement, Skafish shows her intuitive and dreamlike work to be a source of rigorously inventive ideas about science, ontology, translation, and pluralism. Arguing that Roberts's writings contain philosophies ahead of their time, he also asks: How might our understanding of speculative thinking change if we consider the way untrained writers, occult visionaries, and their counterparts in other cultural traditions undertake it? What can outsider thinkers teach us about the limitations of even our most critical intellectual habits?Rough Metaphysics is at once an ethnography of the books of a strange and yet remarkable writer, a commentary on the unlikely philosophy contained in them, and a call for a new way of doing (and undoing) philosophy through anthropology, and vice versa. In guiding the reader through Roberts's often hallucinatory "world of concepts," Skafish also develops a series of original interpretations of thinkers-from William James to Claude Lévi-Strauss to Paul Feyerabend-who have been vital to anthropologists and their fellow travelers. Seductively written and surprising in its turns of thought, Rough Metaphysics is a feast for anyone who wants to learn how to think something new, especially about thought"-- Provided by publisher.

Abstract: « Accompanying a groundbreaking exhibition originating at the Baltimore Museum of Art, this book captures the extraordinary influence of hip hop, which has driven innovations in music, visual and performing arts, fashion, and technology and grown into a global phenomenon since its emergence in the 1970s. It features approximately 70 objects by both established and emerging artists, design houses, streetwear icons and musicians working in a wide range of mediums to demonstrate hip hop’s proliferation from the street to the runway, the studio to the museum gallery, and countless sites in between. The exhibition also explores how hip hop has and continues to challenge structures of power, dominant cultural narratives, and political and social systems of oppression. »--[Source inconnue]

Abstract: This book charts the authors journey as a cultural anthropologist through food resistance movements over two decades, in Catalonia (Spain), Australia and Venezuela. It brings important lessons from the field to current discussions on transitioning to just and sustainable food systems. In Australia, freegans consumption of garbage reveals the extent of food going to waste from commercial sources while people go hungry. In contrast, Venezuelas food sovereignty movement is part of an attempted national transition from a capitalist to socialist economy, highlighting processes of decentralisation, collectivisation, and government grassroots coalitions. The study of autonomous spaces in Catalonia illuminates how food sharing can enable people to live their politics, while highlighting governance, consumption, technology and use of space in food resistance efforts

Abstract: Who owns the past? Are museum archives and their re-collections of cultural heritage a cult of the dead — and if so, are we living in a necropolis? This book on photography, cemeteries, and the archive evolved out of an experimental research project at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome, with its immense collection of canonic photographs from the history of art and architecture. An artist’s book, it takes on the form of a description of an unfinished film in five acts — a cinematic fragment, so to speak: DOPOSTORIA. The title essay by Christoph Keller is complemented by two contributions on burial cultures in prehistory and in modernity from the archaeologist Maria Clara Martinelli and the modern historian Carolin Kosuch. A sequence of collages at the back of the book conjures up a phantasmagorical journey through an ancient-modern Rome.

Abstract: "Naveeda Khan's River Life and the Uprising of Nature refigures the relationship between nature and culture through the study of chauras, or people who live on the chars (sandbars) within the Jamuna River in Bangladesh. Based on fieldwork largely conducted between 2011 and 2015, the book explores how nature acts a dynamic force that creates culture and impacts the human mind, body, and desire. The ethnography shows how alluvial flood plains give rise to certain social, political, spiritual, and familiar forms of life and reveals how nature inhabits humans and their prospects for social life. Khan argues that chaura lives are configured by nature and that nature makes persons and cultures in this place"--

Abstract: The concept of peace has always attracted radical thought, action, and practices. It has been taken to mean merely an absence of overt violence or war, but in the contemporary era it is often used interchangeably with 'peacemaking', 'peacebuilding', 'conflict resolution', and 'statebuilding'. The modern concept of peace has therefore broadened from the mere absence of violence to something much more complicated. In this Very Short Introduction, Oliver Richmond explores the evolution of peace in practice and in theory, exploring our modern assumptions about peace and the various different interpretations of its applications. This second edition has been theoretically and empirically updated and introduces a new framework to understand the overall evolution of the international peace architecture.

Abstract: Besprechung aus dem Weser-Kurier Bremen: "Viele Bremer verbinden mit dem Freimarkt Kindheitserinnerungen.

Abstract: This graphic novella recounts the true story of Zumrat Dawut, as originally published in the independent online news organization, Insider, through interviews conducted by Anthony Del Col and testimony given to the United Nations Human Rights Council. Zumrat Dawut is a mother of three in the Xinjiang autonomous region in China, who was arrested and sent to a detention facility for simply being a Muslim. There she endured brutal living conditions, torture, interrogations, anti-Muslim propaganda, and sterilization. But that was just the beginning of Zumrat's troubles, who with her husband would soon hatch a plan to escape to America. --
Note: "Originally published online by Insider. This print edition includes a foreword by Nicholas Carlson, Global Editor-in-Chief of Insider, an interview with the creative team, a follow-up interview with Zumrat Dawut, a teaching/discussion guide, and process art"--Back cover

Abstract: "Examines the involvement of African Americans in the New Deal art programs, shifting emphasis from individual artists toward broader issues informed by the uniqueness of Black experience"--
Abstract: This book examines the involvement of African American artists in the New Deal art programs of the 1930s. Emphasizing broader issues informed by the uniqueness of Black experience rather than individual artists' works, Mary Ann Calo makes the case that the revolutionary vision of these federal art projects is best understood in the context of access to opportunity, mediated by the reality of racial segregation.Focusing primarily on the Federal Art Project (FAP) of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), Calo documents African American artists' participation in community art centers in Harlem, in St. Louis, and throughout the South. She examines the internal workings of the Harlem Artists' Guild, the Guild's activities during the 1930s, and its alliances with other groups, such as the Artists' Union and the National Negro Congress. Calo also explores African American artists' representation in the exhibitions sponsored by WPA administrators and the critical reception of their work. In doing so, she elucidates the evolving meanings of the terms race, culture, and community in the interwar era. The book concludes with an essay by Jacqueline Francis on Black artists in the early 1940s, after the end of the FAP program.Presenting essential new archival information and important insights into the experiences of Black New Deal artists, this study expands the factual record and positions the cumulative evidence within the landscape of critical race studies. It will be welcomed by art historians and American studies scholars specializing in early twentieth-century race relations

Abstract: "Battleground is the first illustrated history of contemporary African American art. The volume offers an in-depth examination of twenty-five Black artists, discussing their artworks, practices, and philosophies, as expressed in their own words. Celeste-Marie Bernier has done extensive archival work in sources that have not been studied before, and her research provides a foundation for an intellectual and cultural history of contemporary African American artists and art movements from 1990 to the present. The wealth of quoted material-published interviews, artist statements, and autobiographical essays-should inform and inspire additional research in the years to come. Battleground examines the paintings, drawings, sculptures, and installation, digital, and performance art produced by twenty-five Black artists living and working in the United States over the last three decades. The artists studied in this book include Emma Amos, Radcliffe Bailey, Mary Lee Bendolph, Chakaia Booker, Beverly Buchanan, Willie Cole, Leonardo Drew, Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller, Myra Greene, Lyle Ashton Harris, Ronald Lockett, Whitfield Lovell, Kerry James Marshall, Lorraine O'Grady, Jefferson Pinder, Debra Priestly, Winfred Rembert, Nellie Mae Rowe, Alison Saar, Dread Scott, Clarissa T. Abstract: "How do we embark on a history of art that proceeds from the assumption of a global majority? Taking as a rhetorical departure the construct of Afro Asia which doubles as both an ontological reference and an epistemological intervention, this book centers the worlds Black and Asian artists initiate through their work. Afro Asia breaks down delineated time into points, trajectories, angles, magnitudes and relative positions so that temporality and chronology figure primarily as questions of geometry: it asks if and how we can we be something other than what biology, politics, culture, and economics tells us we are or must become. Spanning North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, this book challenges the institutionalization of contemporary art as a global enterprise increasingly governed by the judgments of a self-selecting minority"--

Abstract: Mehr als 30 Jahre Subkultur, Systemtransfer, Sozialarbeit in #Ostdeutschland und die Frage: Wie viele Geschichten passen zwischen zwei Clubtüren?
