Abstract: Containing interviews with more than 100 middle-class working parents in the Boston area, Bookman vividly illustrates the inherent conflicts faced by today's two-working-parent families and the often unfortunate consequences for the community. In an important departure from the ongoing debate, she offers a new paradigm for the relationship between paid and unpaid work that could invigorate both family life and the quality of civil society

Description / Table of Contents: Was heißt Globalisierung »wirklich«?

Abstract: This book examines the political and developmental implications of the new information and communication technologies (NICT) in the Third World. Whereas the concept of the 'digital divide' tends to focus on technological and quantitative indicators, this work stresses the crucial role played by the political regime type, the pursued development model and the specific configuration of actors and decision-making dynamics. Two starkly contrasting Third World countries, state-socialist Cuba and the Latin America's ""show-case democracy"" Costa Rica, were chosen for two in-depth empirical country s

Abstract: A novel theoretical account of globalization, this book argues that we must move away from top-down visions of the processes and concentrate on how ordinary people locked out of power structures create "globalities" of their own

Abstract: "This classic ethnography explores the practices of the Yoruban Hausa community - an exclusive and politically autonomous group which has power and control in many areas of West Africa. In particular, it looks at the 'retribalizing' process by which ethnic groups such as the Hausa reinvent tradition and manipulate values, myths, symbols and rituals from their culture as political tools in the struggle for power and privilege." "Custom and Politics in Urban Africa has become a standard example of how to study complex social relationships in contemporary urban settings undergoing social change. Since it was first published in 1969, the book has been regarded as a landmark work in urban anthropology, and provides a comparative framework for the analysis of political processes in African societies."--BOOK JACKET.

Instead, technological fix has come to mean a cheap, quick fix using inappropriate technology that usually creates more problems than it solves. This collection sets out the distinction between a technological fix and a true technological solution.Bringing together scholars from a variety of disciplines, the essays trace the technological fix as it has appeared throughout the twentieth century. Abstract: Publisher's description: In Black Sexual Politics, one of America's most influential writers on race and gender explores how images of Black sexuality have been used to maintain the color line and how they threaten to spread a new brand of racism around the world today. The ideal of pure white womanhood, Collins argues, required the invention of hot-blooded Latinas, exotic Suzy Wongs, and wanton jezebels -- images that persist in the media today in everything from animal-skin bikinis to the creation of the "welfare mom." Men confront a similar bias in a society that defines African American males as drug dealers, brutish athletes, irresponsible fathers, and rapists. Collins dissects the widespread impact of these distorted messages as she explores African American love relationships, sex in youth culture, interracial romance, sexual violence, and HIV/AIDS

Abstract: The great American fantasy is about leisure: wooded getaways, Caribbean cruises, white-water rafting, the lights of Las Vegas. Yet one in four Americans does not take a vacation at all. We know how to work hard but not how to play. What we really need, argues Al Gini, is some time off. The Importance of Being Lazy takes us on family road trips, to Disneyland, on shopping sprees, on extreme sports adventures, and into the ultimate vacation - retirement - asking why we venerate vacations and why "doing nothing" is a fundamental human necessity

Abstract: This dissertation examines the impact of international institutions on women's rights policies by focusing on the European Union (EU) as a case study in order to illustrate the influence and the ways in which international factors affect women's right as a global policy concern. The principle proposition of this study is that beyond states, institutions are autonomous agents that influence policy outcomes often against member states' preferences

Abstract: "In Silent Theft, David Bollier argues that a great untold story of our time is the staggering privatization and abuse of our common wealth. Corporations are engaged in a relentless plunder of dozens of resources that we collectively own - publicly funded medical breakthroughs, software innovation, the airwaves, the public domain of creative works, and even the DNA of plants, animals, and humans. Too often, however, our government turns a blind eye - or sometimes helps give away our assets." "Amazingly, the silent theft of our shared wealth has gone largely unnoticed because we have lost our ability to see the commons. Spooling out one outrageous story after another, Bollier skillfully weaves together debates about the Internet, the environment, biotechnology, and the communications revolution. His fresh and compelling critique illuminates a rarely explored landscape in our political and cultural life."--BOOK JACKET.
