Situating Simmel's work in particular with respect to New Vitalism and Bruno Latour's work, the book shows that Simmel has still an enormous amount to contribute

Abstract: 'In this book, Richard Grusin demonstrates why he is one of the leading media and cultural theorists of our time. Lucid and convincing throughout, Premediation interrogates our mediatized futures, today. It is essential reading.' - Andrew Hoskins, University of Nottingham, UK 'Premediation offers an important counterpoint to the hegemony of futurism, a critical analysis of how visions and narratives of the future require more than a second glance. Grusin remediates his well known work on media, technology and time through an affective political sphere; one that, he argues, is cultivating an uncanny feeling of inevitability.' - Greg Elmer, Ryerson University, Canada
Abstract: In an era of heightened securitization, print, televisual and networked media have become obsessed with the 'pre-mediation' of future events. In response to the shock of 9/11, socially networked US and global media worked to pre-mediate collective affects of anticipation and connectivity, while also perpetuating low levels of apprehension or fear, The terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 have been called the world's first live global media event. Responding to the immediacy and collective shock produced by live coverage of the collapse of the Twin Towers, print, televisual, and networked media have become obsessed with the pre-mediation of potential futures. In an era of heightened securitization, US and global media have attempted to prevent a recurrence of such media trauma by ensuring that no future will be able to emerge into the present that has not already been premeditated in the past. Socially networked US and global media work to premediate collective affects of anticipation and connectivity, while also perpetuating low levels of apprehension or fear. Following up on the groundbreaking work of media theory Remediation: Understanding New Media, Grusin develops the logic of premediation in terms of such concepts as mediality, the affective life of media, and the anticipation of security

Abstract: "Fisher's brilliant book provides cogent reasons why we should be skeptical about laptop capitalism and its fluidity and instantaneity of communication. As we surf, text, and post, we are actually becoming more enmeshed in the cyber-networks of command and control that, now as before, bear down heavily. Fisher helps us understand the age of digitality as, above all, capitalist." - Ben Agger, Professor of Sociology and Humanities, University of Texas at Arlington "This carefully researched and skillfully written guide to the networked world doesn't just demolish the dreamy visions of Utopia 2.0. It provides precisely the comprehensive analysis we need to understand their power and persistence." - Vincent Mosco, Canada Research Chair in Communication and Society, Queen's University, Canada "This is an audacious systematic ideology-critique of digital capitalism. By meticulously exposing the underlying assumptions and consequences of the digital technology discourse, the book evinces how a seemingly neutral network that creates 'friction free capitalism' germinates a neo-capitalist 'iron cage.' The book reconnects the semiotic and material societal levels. It should be placed on your shelf with Castells's book on informational capitalism, with Dyer-Witheford's on cyber-Marxism or with Mosco's on the digital sublime." - Uri Ram, Professor of Sociology and Anthropology, Ben Gurion University, Israel

Abstract: This interdisciplinary study analyses the ways in which signs of masculinity have been performed across a wide variety of contexts and genres - including literature, classical ballet, sports, rock music, films and computer games - from the early nineteenth century to the present day, Were there male celebrity bodies before David Beckham? When did male dancers start playing a part -- and which one? Was Victorian masculinity all in earnest before Oscar Wilde? What kind of masculinity does cricket promote? What is 'Cock Rock'? How can we understand Chinese American masculinities? Do contemporary computer games have a gender? These and even more questions are addressed in the present study through contemporary theories of masculinity and performativity. The answers that experts from many different fields of Literary, Cultural and Media Studies provide add up to a survey of modern masculinities, its precursors, its manifestations across different genres and different media, as well as its continuing challenges and impasses

Abstract: Rethinking Contemporary Feminist Politics puts forward a timely analysis of contemporary feminism. Critically engaging with both narratives of feminist decline and re-emergence, it draws on poststructuralist political theory to assess current forms of activism in the UK and present a provocative account of recent developments in feminist politics

Abstract: 'Innovative in its Butler inflected, psychoanalytically informed, queer approach to a diverse range of work from Mark Ravenhill to Franko B, Walsh's book is a must for those engaged in cultural and performative studies of 'male trouble'. The study takes the masculinity in crisis discourse from the nineties and beyond to new theoretical heights.' - Elaine Aston, Professor of Contemporary Performance, Lancaster University, UK 'Of all the books published on men and masculinities in the new millennium, Fintan Walsh's is the most perceptive and persuasive. Impressive in its range and justified in its claims, Male Trouble is psychoanalytically inflected cultural studies of the highest order.' - Calvin Thomas, Professor of English, Georgia State University, USA
Abstract: A rich analysis of the discourses and figurations of 'crisis masculinity' around the turn of the twenty-first century, working at the intersection of performance and cultural studies and looking at film, television, drama, performance art, visual art and street theatre, Male Trouble explores how Western masculinity has increasingly appeared as a troubled gender category in recent times. Cross-disciplinary in scope, the book focuses on a variety of performative case studies in drama, theatre, live art, guerilla performance, public spectacle, and film. Moreover, the study analyses work that dialogues with discourses of masculinity in crisis principally drawn from American, British, and Irish contexts to challenge the sacrificial terms by which male trouble is typically articulated, while ultimately arguing for an ethic of fragilization in order to move beyond this deadlock in subjectivity and relationality

Abstract: This volume brings together scholars from across Europe to critically examine TV history programming in a period of political, economic and cultural change. They look at links between programming and national identity, consider the representation of minorities, and explore a range of televisual genres and techniques, Televising History: Mediating the Past in Postwar Europe examines the representation of history on television in the context of the immense economic and political changes experienced in Europe in the postwar era, and particularly in the past three decades. It considers how elements of the recent and more distant past have been used and adopted by scholars and media professionals alike. The book shows how, within the broader context of cultural, economic, political and aesthetic change, pan-European developments in broadcasting, and particularly in televisual modes, forms and imperatives, have mediated the way in which the past is represented onscreen. Considering the programming of ten European nations, the contributors also represent a range of disciplines, from sociology and history to film studies and television studies, demonstrating the diversity and richness of this growing interdisciplinary field

Abstract: This book provides an interdisciplinary and collaborative anthology that seeks to make a compelling and exciting analysis of contemporary Hollywood film texts (and the larger industry and society to which they are dialectically related) in light of Giroux's ideas about public pedagogy. Foreword by Lawrence Grossberg.
Abstract: "This is an important text that sheds a powerful new light on the exploitation industry we have come to know as Hollywood. It is a book that demands a close reading." - Peter McLaren, Professor of Urban Schooling, University of California, Los Angeles "A rich and varied collection of commentaries, offering insightful critiques and sociological sensibilities. Of interest to ordinary film buffs and cinematic specialists alike." - Michael Parenti, author of Make-Believe Media and Contrary Notions "For readers of Hollywood's Exploited, the wisdom will be gained, not received. Against conventional grains, this is an anthology of thoughtful inquiries and tough-minded assessments - challenging us to think anew, and more deeply, about what we see in movies." - Norman Solomon, author of The Habits of Highly Deceptive Media; War Made Easy; and The Trouble with Dilbert "This smart collection reminds us that whatever reality we might observe and investigate is merely the starting point of thought, struggle, and action; standing directly next to whatever the case may be is always what the case could be or should be. Frymer, Kashani, Nocella, and Van Heertum have assembled a mighty chorus urging us to go beneath surface meanings and instant impressions, official policies and commercial messages, political propaganda, controlling myths, received wisdom and the dogma of common sense. We begin to understand, then, the root causes and social context of the taken-for-granted all around us. This is a call-to-arms." - William Ayers, Distinguished Professor of Education, University of Illinois at Chicago and author of To Teach "This book offers the clearest evidence yet of how a supposedly 'liberal' Hollywood trades in racial, sexual, and other stereotypes as a matter of course, and why such portrayals of marginalized and otherwise disempowered groups have a profound impact on the public's appreciation of the various forms of social and political discrimination they still face." - Mark LeVine, Professor of Middle Eastern History, University of California, Irvine and author of Why They Don't Hate Us and Heavy Metal Islam

Abstract: This book addresses one of the core concepts across the social sciences: territory. Social theory has struggled to conceptualize territorial space in the nexus between the 'state' and 'global change'. This innovative book argues that the discussion of territorial change remains trapped within a dual tension between subjectivist and objectivist accounts of space, and a flawed dichotomy between global and territorial space. In order to address these problems, this book analyzes the history of cartography as a way to understand the nature of modern political space. From the 15th to the 17th century European cartography underwent a transformation establishing a new reality of space that conditioned the possibility of developing centralised sovereign territorial states within a unified global framework. This so-called modern cartography produced space as an autonomous sphere based on abstract mathematical principles. To understand the relationship between territory and globalisation we have to understand that both depend on a cartographic reality of space. This has profound implications for our understanding of political identity, changes associated with globalization, and explains why state territory has proven such a persistent dimension in global politics. -- Back cover
