    Abstract: In der wilhelminischen Ära des Deutschen Kaiserreichs vollzog sich im Kontext der konflikthaften Entwicklungen der »orientalischen Frage« und insbesondere der zunehmenden Entfremdung in den deutsch-englischen Beziehungen die Konstituierung des Bedeutungsraums »Orient«. In diesem Prozess spielte der Bankierssohn und Orientalist Max Freiherr von Oppenheim, der von 1896 an für dreizehn Jahre als Beobachter der islamischen Welt kommissarisch am deutschen Generalkonsulat in Kairo tätig war und später im Ersten Weltkrieg mit der Schaffung und Leitung einer »Nachrichtenstelle für den Orient« betraut wurde, eine zentrale Rolle. An ihm lässt sich idealtypisch zeigen, wie sich der »Orient« allmählich zu einem Idiom entwickelte, das für nahezu alle zeitgenössischen außenpolitischen Probleme, Ziele und Herausforderungen des Deutschen Reichs Antworten und Optionen bereithielt.

    Abstract: Am Anfang war Tacitus: Der römische Historiker schildert in seiner ›Germa­nia‹ die Gebiete östlich des Rheins wenig vorteilhaft als »durch Wälder grauenerre­gend«. Als dann im Zuge der Befreiungskriege um 1800 Anfänge eines deutschen Nationalbewusstseins entstehen, besinnen sich Dichter und Denker genau auf diesen anti-urbanen, naturnahen Waldmythos. Der Wald als unverbildete Natur wird zum deutschen Ideal – im Gegensatz zur verbildeten, städtischen Zivilisation Frankreichs. Dieser konstitutive Gegensatz bleibt prägend – bis hin zum Nationalsozialismus. Zechner widmet diesem Urtopos der Deutschen eine eindrucksvolle Studie und zeichnet dessen Ausprägungen von der Romantik bis zum Nationalsozialismus nach. Eine große Ideengeschichte, die erstmals das Identitätskonzept des deutschen »Waldvolkes« kritisch rekonstruiert.

Fachleute sind sich einig: Der Klimawandel geht weitgehend auf unser Konto. Zeit für einen Rückblick: Wie hat das Klima die menschliche Spezies beeinflußt? Wie haben Klimaschwankungen das Leben unserer Vorfahren verändert, wie ihre Kultur bestimmt? Ein erhellender Streifzug durch die vergangenen Klimaschwankungen vom Holozän bis heute. Alle sprechen vom Wetter: wir auch. Darüber, wie es werden wird, gibt es derzeit mehr Voraussagen als sonst üblich; aber was wissen wir über Klimaschwankungen vor 500 Jahren, vor 5000 Jahren? Und wie können wir überhaupt etwas über die Geschichte des Wetters wissen? Schließlich: Wie haben sich die Klimaschwankungen auf den Menschen, sein Wohlbefinden und seinen Erfindungsgeist ausgewirkt? Wolfgang Behringer führt uns ein in die historische Forschung zur Klimaentwicklung; er zeigt uns, was heute als gesichertes Wissen gelten kann, welche Schwankungen es gab und wie sie das Fortkommen des homo sapiens behinderten oder beförderten. Ein Stück weit bietet das Buch naturwissenschaftliche Fundierung, um dann für die Geschichte ab dem Mittelalter dem Zusammenhang zwischen Klimaentwicklung und kultureller Entfaltung detaillierter nachzuforschen. Behringers lesenswertes Buch führt uns plastisch vor Augen, mit welchen Schwierigkeiten, manchmal aber auch mit welch außergewöhnlich angenehmen Wetter-Epochen etwa in der Staufer-Zeit unsere Vorfahren konfrontiert waren und wie sie damit umgingen.     Abstract: The design and deciphering of the urban take place at multiple levels of social configurations and artistic perceptions simultaneously. The city has thus served as way of life, projection, image, and imaginary habitat, which has shaped one of the key programmatic themes in literature, painting, film, and music since the 19th and 20 centuries. Expressly musical interpretations are central to this volume. The articles provide insight into the diversity of artistic urban inventions and examine them on the basis of different cities - portraits of differentiated reactions to the municipal, scope, and forms of expression as well as past and present urban imaginations.

Wenig Beachtung hingegen fand bisher die Pendelmigration deutsch-polnischer Doppelstaatler aus Oberschlesien - einer Region, die aus der ehemaligen Peripherie Deutschlands wie Polens inzwischen mitten in ein vereintes Europa gerückt ist.Dabei macht die wechselvolle Geschichte dieser historischen Grenzregion sie geradezu zu einem Paradebeispiel für das Phänomen »Transnationalismus«. Die hier analysierten Lebensgeschichten ihrer Einwohner_innen werfen Schlaglichter auf europäische Diskurse über soziale und politische Partizipation sowie auf individuelle und kollektive Identitätsbildung.

    Abstract: The former Soviet empire spanned eleven time zones and contained half the world's forests; vast deposits of oil, gas and coal; various ores; major rivers such as the Volga, Don and Angara; and extensive biodiversity. These resources and animals, as well as the people who lived in the former Soviet Union - Slavs, Armenians, Georgians, Azeris, Kazakhs and Tajiks, indigenous Nenets and Chukchi - were threatened by environmental degradation and extensive pollution. This environmental history of the former Soviet Union explores the impact that state economic development programs had on the environment. The authors consider the impact of Bolshevik ideology on the establishment of an extensive system of nature preserves, the effect of Stalinist practices of industrialization and collectivization on nature, and the rise of public involvement under Khrushchev and Brezhnev, and changes to policies and practices with the rise of Gorbachev and the break-up of the USSR.

    Abstract: What effect do spatial mobility and migrations have on the diffusion of knowledge? Based on both the local records of various towns and villages in rural Egypt and the imperial orders of the Ottoman state, this book charts how changes in the control of natural resources fundamentally altered the nature of Ottoman imperial sovereignty in Egypt and throughout the empire. In revealing how Egyptian peasants were able to use their knowledge and experience of local environments to force the hand of the imperial state, Nature and Empire in Ottoman Egypt tells a story of the connections of empire stretching from canals in the Egyptian countryside to the palace in Istanbul, from the forests of Anatolia to the shores of the Red Sea, and from a plague flea's bite to the fortunes of one of the most powerful states of the early modern world

    Abstract: Gated Communities provides a historic, socio-political and contemporary cultural perspective of gated communities. In doing so it offers a different lens through which to view the historical vernacular background of this now global phenomenon. The book presents a collection of new writing on the issue by an international and interdisciplinary group of contributors. The authors review current thinking on gated communities and consider the sustainability issues that these contemporary 'lifestyle' communities raise. The authors argue that there are links that can be drawn between the historic gated homesteads and cities, found in much of the world, and today's Western-style secure complexes. Global examples of gated communities, and their historical context, are presented throughout the book. The authors also comment on how sustainability issues have impacted on these communities. The book concludes by considering how the historic measures up with the contemporary in terms of sustainability function, and aesthetic.

    Abstract: A narration of the mutually mortal historical contest between humans and nature in Latin America. Covering a period that begins with Amerindian civilizations and concludes in the region's present urban agglomerations, the work offers an original synthesis of the current scholarship on Latin America's environmental history and argues that tropical nature played a central role in shaping the region's historical development. Human attitudes, populations, and appetites, from Aztec cannibalism to more contemporary forms of conspicuous consumption, figure prominently in the story. However, characters such as hookworms, whales, hurricanes, bananas, dirt, butterflies, guano, and fungi make more than cameo appearances. Recent scholarship has overturned many of our egocentric assumptions about humanity's role in history. Seeing Latin America's environmental past from the perspective of many centuries illustrates that human civilizations, ancient and modern, have been simultaneously more powerful and more vulnerable than previously thought

In Authentic New Orleans, Kevin Fox Gotham explains how New Orleans became a tourist town, a spectacular locale known as much for its excesses as for its quirky Southern charm. Gotham begins in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina amid the whirlwind of speculation about the rebuilding of the city and the dread of outsiders wiping New Orleans clean of the grit that made it great. He continues with the origins of Carnival and the Mardi Gras celebration in the nineteenth century, showing how, through careful planning and promotion, the city constructed itself as a major tourist attraction. By examining various image-building campaigns and promotional strategies to disseminate a palatable image of New Orleans on a national scale Gotham ultimately establishes New Orleans as one of the originators of the mass tourism industry-which linked leisure to travel, promoted international expositions, and developed the concept of pleasure travel. Gotham shows how New Orleans was able to become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States, especially through the transformation of Mardi Gras into a national, even international, event. All the while Gotham is concerned with showing the difference between tourism from above and tourism from below-that is, how New Orleans' distinctiveness is both maximized, some might say exploited, to serve the global economy of tourism as well as how local groups and individuals use tourism to preserve and anchor longstanding communal traditions.

    Note: "Continuing his groundbreaking analysis of economic structures, Douglass North develops an analytical framework for explaining the ways in which institutions and institutional change affect the performance of economies, both at a given time and over time. Institutions exist, he argues, due to the uncertainties involved in human interaction; they are the constraints devised to structure that interaction. Yet, institutions vary widely in their consequences for economic performance; some economies develop institutions that produce growth and development, while others develop institutions that produce stagnation. North first explores the nature of institutions and explains the role of transaction and production costs in their development. The second part of the book deals with institutional change. Institutions create the incentive structure in an economy, and organisations will be created to take advantage of the opportunities provided within a given institutional framework. North argues that the kinds of skills and knowledge fostered by the structure of an economy will shape the direction of change and gradually alter the institutional framework. He then explains how institutional development may lead to a path-dependent pattern of development. In the final part of the book, North explains the implications of this analysis for economic theory and economic history.     Abstract: This book provides a detailed examination of the demographic behavior of families during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in a sample of fourteen villages in five different regions of Germany. It is based on the reconstituted family histories of vital events (births, deaths and marriages) compiled by genealogies for the entire populations of these villages. The book applies the type of micro-level analysis possible with family reconstitution data for the crucial period leading to and encompassing the early stages of the demographic transition, including the initial onset of the decline of fertility to low modern levels. The analysis explores many aspects of demographic behavior which have been largely ignored by previous macro-level investigations of the demographic transition. These include infant and child mortality, maternal mortality, marriage, marital dissolution, bridal pregnancy and illegitimacy. The core of the study, however, deals with marital reproduction, examining the modernization of reproductive behavior in terms of the transition from a situation of natural fertility to one characterized by pervasive family limitation

    Abstract: by ROBERT ROSS and GERARD J. TELKAMP I In a sense, cities were superfluous to the purposes of colonists. The Europeans who founded empires outside their own continent were primarily concerned with extracting those products which they could not acquire within Europe. These goods were largely agricultural, and grown most often in a climate not found within Europe. Even when, as in India before 1800, the major exports were manufactures, in general they were still made in the countryside rather than in the great cities. It was only on rare occasion when great mineral wealth was discovered that giant metropolises grew up around the site of extraction. Since their location was deter­ mined by geology, not economics, they might be in the most inaccessible and in­ convenient areas, but they too would draw labour off from the agricultural pursuits of the colony as a whole. From the point of view of the colonists, the cities were therefore in some respects necessary evils, as they were parasites on the rural producers, competing with the colonists in the process of surplus extraction. Nevertheless, the colonists could not do without cities. The requirements of colonisation demanded many unequivocally urban functions. Pre-eminent among these was of course the need for a port, to allow the export of colonial wares and the import of goods from Europe, or from other parts of the non-European world, in the country-trade as it was known around India.
