    Abstract: Afropolitan Encounters: Literature and Activism in London and Berlin explores what Afropolitanism does. Mobile people of African descent use this term to address their own lived realities creatively, which often includes countering stereotypical notions of being African. Afropolitan practices are enormously heterogeneous and malleable, which constitutes its strengths and, at the same time, creates tensions. This book traces the theoretical beginnings of Afropolitanism and moves on to explore Afropolitan practices in London and Berlin. Afropolitanism can take different forms, such as that of an identity, a political and ethical stance, a dead–end road, networks, a collective self–care practice or a strategic label. In spite of the harsh criticism, Afropolitanism is attractive for people to deal with the meanings of Africa and Africanness, questions of belonging, equal rights and opportunities. While not a unitary project, the vast variety of Afropolitan practices provide approaches to contemporary political problems in Europe and beyond. In this book, Afropolitan practices are read against the specific context of German and British colonial histories and structures of racism, the histories of Black Europeans, and contemporary right–wing resurgence in Germany and England, respectively.

    Abstract: 'Liberal States, Authoritarian Families' sheds new light on longstanding questions in educational and political philosophy about the relationship between parents and children in a liberal state. Contemporary theorists argue that the family should be democratized to reflect the egalitarian ideals of the liberal state, but Koganzon argues that this desire for 'congruence' between familial and state authority was originally illiberal in origin, advanced by theorists of absolute sovereignty like Bodin and Hobbes.

    Abstract: South Africa' s post-apartheid narrative is one of democracy and equality - but its flaws run deep, argues Ives S. Loukson. Disclosing prejudices about whiteness, homosexuality and democracy in the »staged society«, he claims the concept of relation as an adequate framework for the embodiment of »profane democracy« understood in Agambian terms. Its fluidity is equated to openness and transparency that are relevant dimensions for profane democracy.     Abstract: "World Englishes on the Web focuses on linguistic practices at the intersection of international migration and social media, examining the language repertoires of Nigerians living in the United States, and their negotiations of identity and authenticity on a Nigerian web forum. Based on a large corpus of informal, multilingual, interactive, online writing, this book describes how diasporic Nigerians employ African-American Vernacular English, Nigerian English, Nigerian Pidgin, and ethnic Nigerian languages in an online community of practice. The project combines corpus linguistic methods-relying on a corpus management tool custom-made for web forum data-with ethnographically-informed qualitative analyses of morphosyntactic, lexical, and orthographic features, and immigrants' language attitudes and ideologies.     Abstract: "World Englishes on the Web focuses on linguistic practices at the intersection of international migration and social media, examining the language repertoires of Nigerians living in the United States, and their negotiations of identity and authenticity on a Nigerian web forum. Based on a large corpus of informal, multilingual, interactive, online writing, this book describes how diasporic Nigerians employ African-American Vernacular English, Nigerian English, Nigerian Pidgin, and ethnic Nigerian languages in an online community of practice. The project combines corpus linguistic methods-relying on a corpus management tool custom-made for web forum data-with ethnographically-informed qualitative analyses of morphosyntactic, lexical, and orthographic features, and immigrants' language attitudes and ideologies.     Abstract: Die Hochschule ist als Teil der globalisierten Welt auch ein Ort migrationsgesellschaftlicher Mehrsprachigkeit. Die diskursive Verhandlung dieses Themenkomplexes bewegt sich häufig zwischen einer kompensatorischen Perspektive mit dem Fokus auf die deutsche Sprache und dem Blick auf Internationalisierungsprozesse, der zunächst die englische Sprache in den Vordergrund rücken lässt. Die sprachliche Vielfalt, die Studierende selbst mit an die Hochschulen bringen, und deren Potential ist dagegen seltener Gegenstand der Betrachtung. In dieser Studie stehen die Perspektiven von Studierenden an Hochschulen in Deutschland im Mittelpunkt, die ihren Alltag selbst als mehrsprachig beschreiben. Wie gestalten sich ihre sprachlichen Spielräume zwischen der eigenen lebensweltlichen Mehrsprachigkeit und hochschulischen Sprachverhältnissen? Dieser Frage wird auf der Basis von qualitativen Interviewdaten nachgegangen. Besonderes Interesse gilt dabei den Mustern des studentischen Sprachgebrauchs im Hochschulkontext und damit verbundenen Zukunftsaspirationen sowie der Frage, wie Studierende ihre Sprachpraxis erleben.

    Abstract: Infanticide in Tudor and Stuart England explores one of society's darkest crimes using archival sources and discussing its representation in the drama, pamphlets and broadside ballads of the early modern period. It takes the reader on a journey through the streets and taverns where street literature was hawked, to the playhouses where the crime was dramatized, and the courts where it was tried and punished. Using a regional microstudy of coroners' inquests and churchwardens' presentments, coupled with theories of liminality, marginality and rites of passage, it reveals complex and contradictory attitudes to infants, women and the crime. As well as considering unwed women, the most common perpetrators of infanticide, the study shows that married women, men and the local community were also culpable, and the many reasons for this. Infanticide in Tudor and Stuart England is set in its European and historical contexts, revealing surprising continuities across time.

    Abstract: This study is a concise introduction to Bruno Latour's Actor-Network Theory and its application in a literary analysis of urban narratives of the 21st century. We encounter well-known psycho-geographers such as Iain Sinclair and Sam Miller, and renowned authors, Patrick Neate and Suketu Mehta. Prachi More analyses these authors' accounts of vastly different cities such as London, Delhi, Mumbai, Johannesburg, New York and Tokyo. Are these urban narratives a contemporary solution to documenting an ever-evasive urban reality? If so, how do they embody "matters of concern" as Latour would have put it, laying bare modern-day "actors" and "networks" rather than reporting mere "matters of fact"? These questions are drawn into an inter-disciplinary discussion that addresses concerns and questions of epistemology, the sociology of knowledge as well as urban and documentary studies.

    Abstract: Die Darwinsche Evolutionstheorie hat die These populär gemacht, dass der Mensch vom Affen abstamme, obwohl Darwin selbst davon kaum gesprochen hat. Insbesondere innerhalb der deutschen Anthropologie wurde diese Idee im 19. Jahrhundert aufgeregt debattiert. Die moderne Anthropologie konstruierte sich ihren Gegenstand von nun an neu. Wie es dazu kam, steht im Zentrum dieses Buches. Es verfolgt die Karriere einer These, die in Wissenschaft, Literatur und Kunst gleichermaßen zu Abwehrreaktionen und zu Begeisterung führte: Ab jetzt steht fest, dass die Frage danach, was der Mensch ist, nur mit Blick auf seine mehr oder weniger unheimlichen Doubles gestellt werden kann. Wie die Akteure und Medien der Evolutionstheorie mit dieser Erkenntnis umgingen, zeigt „Der Mensch, der Affe“.

    Abstract: In Encountering Empire, Elisabeth Engel traces how black American missionaries – men and women grappling with their African heritage – established connections in Africa during the heyday of European colonialism. Reconstructing the black American 'colonial encounter,' Engel analyzes the images, transatlantic relationships, and possibilities of representation African American missionaries developed for themselves while negotiating colonial regimes. Between 1900 and 1939, these missionaries paved the way for the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the oldest independent black American institution, to establish a presence in Britain's sub-Saharan colonies. Illuminating a neglected chapter of Atlantic history, Engel demonstrates that African Americans used imperial structures for their own self-determination. Encountering Empire thus challenges the notion that pan-Africanism was the only viable strategy for black emancipation.

    Abstract: Dieses Buch wurde mit dem Ludger-Schiffler Preis für Fremdsprachendidaktik 2015 ausgezeichnet. Das Buch behandelt mit interkultureller Kompetenzentwicklung ein Thema aus der aktuellen Curricularentwicklung und deren Kompetenz- und Outputorientierung. Die Autorin entscheidet sich im Kontext einer Schüleraustauschfahrt für ein qualitatives Untersuchungsdesign, welches Handlungsforschung (action research) im Feld, in der Doppeldimension von Forschung und Unterricht zulässt. Die Ergebnisse werden für eine Konkretisierung des Byramschen Modells (1997) genutzt und münden in die Entwicklung von begegnungsdidaktischen Prinzipien für die Gestaltung von Schüleraustauschfahrten. Abschließend präsentiert die Autorin einen praktisch erprobten Vorschlag eines phasenorientierten Modells für Schüleraustauschfahrten mit Aufgabenformaten zur Vorbereitung, Durchführung und Nachbereitung

    Abstract: Large-scale migration after WWII and the prominence of Jamaican Creole in the media have promoted its use all around the globe. Deterritorialisation has entailed the contact-induced transformation of Jamaican Creole in diaspora communities and its adoption by ‘crossers’. Taking sociolinguistic globalisation yet a step further, this monograph investigates the use of Jamaican Creole in a web discussion forum by combining quantitative and qualitative methodology in a sociolinguistic ‘third wave’ approach. In the absence of standardised orthography, one of the central aims of this study is to document the sociolinguistic styling and grassroots (anti-) standardisation of spelling norms for Jamaican Creole in the web forum as a virtual community of practice. An analysis of individual repertoire portraits demonstrates that conventionalised spelling variants co-occur with basilectal Jamaican Creole morphosyntax in ‘Cyber-Jamaican’ as the digital ethnolinguistic repertoire of the discussion forum. The enregisterment of this ethnolinguistic repertoire is closely tied to staged performance, which establishes the link between ‘Cyber-Jamaican’ and the negotiation of sociolinguistic identity and authenticity via stance-taking.

Seit 2008 wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Arbeitsbereich Geschlechtergeschichte an der Universität Bielefeld sowie seit 2010 zudem Geschäftsführerin der Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology. 2003 bis 2007 wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Arbeitsbereich Wissenschaftsgeschichte an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.     Abstract: Die Identität als ein Schlüssel zu einer Zielkultur lässt sich durch die fachdidaktische Terminologie zwar relativ präzise beschreiben und verstehen, doch angesichts der aktuellen Kompetenzorientierung der englischen Fachdidaktik kann die Annäherung des Lernenden an ein fremdes Land durch weitere Erkenntnisse auf eine breitere Basis gestellt werden. Einen wesentlichen Beitrag hierfür können die Cultural Studies leisten, da diese die sozialen, die ethnischen, die religiösen und viele weitere Aspekte kulturellen Lebens und Wirkens im historischen Kontext erfassen. Die Synthese aus didaktischem und kulturwissenschaftlichem Forschungsinteresse bietet die einzigartige Möglichkeit, die Kulturkompetenz durch die Bewusstmachung von Verstehens- und Identifikationsprozessen zu fördern.     Abstract: This descriptive and comprehensive study on the discursive struggle over interpersonal relations in online message boards is located at the fascinating interface of pragmatics and computer-mediated discourse - a research area which has so far not attracted much scientific interest. It sets out to shed light on the question how interpersonal relations are established, managed and negotiated in online message boards by giving a valid overview of the entire panoply of interpersonal relations (and their interrelations), including both positively and negatively marked behavior.     Abstract: In both Manchester and Vienna, there is much anecdotal evidence about the social implications of one`s spoken language variety. However, the evaluation of a person`s character based on the way they speak might not necessarily be the same in different countries with different languages. If evaluations of a speaker`s social class, professional status and general character change according to the country and language, then in which ways? By applying a very similar methodological framework in each of these cities, this study sets out to examine the extent to which perceptions of a speaker may vary with the social and linguistic context of each urban environment. Many sociolinguistic studies have already investigated how the way we talk influences the perceptions others have of us. The research presented in this book expands on this idea by directly comparing data across two nations with two different languages.
