Neben seinem Opa sind auch die neuen Freunde Lee und Litju dabei, die ihm helfen, sich in der schwer zugänglichen Geschichte und Kultur zurechtzufinden. Die Geschichte ist flott und spannend aus der Sicht des Ich-Erzählers Siong erzählt. Seine Ängste bei der Bewältigung des fremden Alltags sind gut zu verstehen. Die detaillierten Schilderungen der fremden Lebensgewohnheiten übertreffen an Informationsgehalt manchen Reiseführer. Ein gutes Cover und Inhaltsverzeichnis runden das auch für schulische Zwecke bestens geeignete Buch ab. Eine Landkarte ist vorhanden! Etwas Wissen über China ist nötig, deshalb sollten Bücher wie: "Wir leben in China" (BA 11/06) oder "China heute: Das Reich der Mitte" (BA 4/08) bereitliegen.
