Abstract:
Pod koniec XIX wieku w samej tylko Warszawie pracowało prawie 40 tysięcy pokojówek, garderobianych i panien do wszystkiego. Większość w wieku do 25 lat, a 70% analfabetek. Młodych imigrantek ze wsi, samotnych w dużym mieście, bezbronnych. Ta książka jest opowieścią o nadużyciach, których na służących dopuszczali się właściwie wszyscy, którzy się z nimi stykali. Od Kościoła, zainteresowanego zbawieniem ich duszy, ale już nie sprawiedliwą karą dla molestujących panów domu, przez panie, które służbę ignorowały, poniżały i zwalniały z byle powodu, aż do emancypantek i socjalistów, którzy chcieli pomóc, ale nie wiedzieli jak. A wszystko to w czasach wynalazków, odkryć naukowych i walki o prawa kobiet. Ta książka przypomina, że nawet w wieku pary i elektryczności nowoczesność była, ale tylko dla wybranych
