    Abstract: La 4e de couv. indique : "Cible principale des débats sur les vices et vertus de l'élitisme à la française, les grandes écoles font aujourd'hui l'objet de multiples mesures pour élargir leur vivier de recrutement. L'instauration de la « discrimination positive » à Sciences Po Paris, puis l'obligation faite aux grandes écoles d'accueillir au moins 30 % de boursiers ont provoqué de vives polémiques. Mais ce tumulte médiatique laisse dans l'ombre les principaux intéressés, les étudiants bénéficiaires des politiques d'ouverture sociale. Ils ont leur mot à dire. Souvent issus des milieux populaires et, pour beaucoup, de familles immigrées, qui sont ces jeunes ? En franchissant les frontières sociales, à quelles épreuves sont-ils confrontés au quotidien ? Grâce à une enquête ethnographique au long cours sur une classe préparatoire réservée à des bacheliers ZEP, dans un lycée prestigieux de province, ce « polar sociologique » montre comment ces étudiants sont sélectionnés, formés et transformés au fil de leur parcours, jusqu'à leur arrivée dans le monde du travail. À travers leurs espoirs et leurs craintes, leurs découvertes et leurs déconvenues, leurs succès et leurs échecs, ces étudiants s'affrontent à un problème qui nous concerne tous : que signifie concrètement changer de milieu social et tout faire pour « réussir » ?

    Abstract: Reconciliation is an important agenda for postwar countries. It plays a major role in harmonizing bilateral and regional relations. Lin Ren compares reconciliations between the Sino-Japanese and the Franco-German dyads. Each dyad shares a deep-rooted historic antagonism. Nevertheless, France and Germany reached a far deeper degree of reconciliation. Therefore, this book devotes to explore the "trouble-creators that led to the diverse outcomes, so as to challenge taking rationality as the single micro-foundation of decision making concerning reconciliation.

    Abstract: Energy efficiency contributes to the main objectives of energy policy in the European Union: energy security, cost effectiveness and environmental benefits. However, the efficiency potential remains widely untapped. Will White Certificate Instruments, a new framework instrument to foster end-use energy efficiency, help to close the energy efficiency gap? The analysis compares the political process of choosing and designing White Certificate Instruments in Italy, France and Great Britain. Dagmar Sibyl Steuwer shows that the type of policy instrument as well as its image has an influence not only on agenda-setting but also on the policy instrument’s effectiveness due to interactions with existing energy efficiency discourses, regulatory traditions and the prevailing policy style.     Abstract: The book is part of the 5-volume series “German Social Policy”, a unique multidisciplinary approach to the history of German social policy written by the doyens of their respective disciplines. The volumes expound the contribution of the German tradition to the rise of social policy in the Western world in the 19th and 20th centuries. Germany pioneered modern social policy in the 19th century when Bismarck introduced social insurance. After the Second World War, Germany’s Social Market Economy became a model of social integration. The volumes cover the history of ideas (volume 1), the legal and political history before and after 1945 (volumes 2 and 3), the German Democratic Republic (1949-1990) and the impact of German reunification (1990) (volume 4). Volume 5 embeds the German case in a major comparative study of European welfare states, complemented by a study of the USA and the Soviet Union. The volumes also yield insights into general theoretical issues of social policy beyond the empirical case of Germany. Each volume has an introduction by the editor who summarizes the contribution made by the volumes and looks into the future of German social policy. In the burgeoning literature on welfare regimes and typologies, this comparative study offers a stimulating new perspective. Kaufmann, the doyen of the sociology of social policy in Germany, emphasizes norms, culture and history, in contrast to political economy approaches. Comparing Britain, Sweden, France and Germany, Kaufmann highlights the „idiosyncrasy” of each welfare state: countries are compared with regard to their state traditions and the relationship between state and civil society; their national “social questions”; their economic systems, including the unions and labour law; social security and redistribution; and their personal social services and education. The socio-cultural approach enables Kaufmann to show that not all modern states are welfare states. Some are just „capitalism“ (the USA), others are „socialism“ (the former Soviet Union). In this light, the (essentially North-West European) welfare state is portrayed as a third way between capitalism and socialism

    Abstract: Wohlfahrtsstaaten unterscheiden sich unter anderem darin, welchen Stellenwert sie der Familie – im Vergleich zum Staat oder zum Markt – in der Wohlfahrtsproduktion zuschreiben. Die konservativen Wohlfahrtsstaaten gelten als besonders familialistisch. Das Buch präsentiert eine Familialismus-Typologie und zeichnet aus einer historisch-institutionalistischen Perspektive die Entwicklung von Kinderbetreuungs- und Altenpflegepolitiken in vier konservativen Wohlfahrtsstaaten (Belgien, Deutschland, Frankreich und Österreich) nach. Es wird analysiert, inwiefern und warum sich das Gesicht des Familialismus im Zeitablauf gewandelt hat. Die theoretische Verortung der konservativen Wohlfahrtsstaaten im impliziten und expliziten Familialismus bestätigt sich durch die empirische Analyse. In Belgien, Frankreich und Deutschland zeigt sich zudem eine konservative Spielart des optionalen Familialismus

    Abstract: "During the first half of the twentieth century, movements seeking political equality emerged in France's overseas territories. Within twenty years, they were replaced by movements for national independence in the majority of French colonies, protectorates, and mandates. In this pathbreaking study of the decolonization era, Adria Lawrence asks why elites in French colonies shifted from demands for egalitarian and democratic reforms to calls for independent statehood, and why mass mobilization for independence emerged where and when it did. Lawrence shows that nationalist discourses became dominant as a consequence of the failure of the reform agenda. Where political rights were granted, colonial subjects opted for further integration and reform. Contrary to conventional accounts, nationalism was not the only or even the primary form of anti-colonialism. Lawrence shows further that mass nationalist protest occurred only when and where French authority was disrupted. Imperial crises were the cause, not the result, of mass protest"--

    Abstract: Erst nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gelang eine äußerst dichte Zusammenarbeit Frankreichs und Deutschlands in allen Bereichen des gesellschaftlichen, politischen und wirtschaftlichen Lebens und eine "Aussöhnung" der beiden Länder. Wie kam dies zustande und welche Faktoren trugen dazu bei? Welche Besonderheiten kennzeichnen das "deutsch-französische Modell"? Lassen sich tatsächlich allgemeine Empfehlungen aus diesem Modell ableiten, um die Beziehungen ehemals verfeindeter Staaten konfliktfrei zu gestalten? Der Sammelband richtet in ausgewählten Beiträgen seinen Blick zunächst auf den historischen Kontext der deutsch-französischen Beziehungen, auf ihre Ausgangsbedingungen, Entwicklung und momentane Lage. Einen großen Teil des Bandes nehmen Beiträge zu einzelnen Fallstudien der deutsch-französischen Zusammenarbeit ein, z. B. das Deutsch-Französische Jugendwerk, Hochschulkooperationen, Städtepartnerschaften oder auch Beamtenaustauschprogramme der Außenministerien. Der dritte Teil schließlich widmet sich der Entwicklung der deutsch-tschechischen Beziehungen seit 1989 und wagt damit einen ersten Versuch der Übertragbarkeit des deutsch-französischen Modells.     Abstract: In Between the Queen and the Cabby, John Cole provides the first full translation of de Gouges's Rights of Woman and the first systematic commentary on its declaration, its attempt to envision a non-marital partnership agreement, and its support for persons of colour. Cole compares and contrasts de Gouges's two texts, explaining how the original text was both her model and her foil. By adding a proposed marriage contract to her pamphlet, she sought to turn the ideas of the French Revolution into a concrete way of life for women. Further examination of her work as a playwright suggests that she supported equality not only for women but for slaves as well. Cole highlights the historical context of de Gouges's writing, going beyond the inherent sexism and misogyny of the time in exploring why her work did not receive the reaction or achieve the influential status she had hoped for. Read in isolation in the gender-conscious twenty-first century, de Gouges's Rights of Woman may seem ordinary. However, none of her contemporaries, neither the Marquis de Condorcet nor Mary Wollstonecraft, published more widely on current affairs, so boldly attempted to extend democratic principles to women, or so clearly related the public and private spheres. Read in light of her eventual condemnation by the Revolutionary Tribunal, her words become tragically foresighted: "Woman has the right to mount the Scaffold; she must also have that of mounting the Rostrum."

    Abstract: Shows which historical developments led people to start describing themselves and others as 'minorities'Through close attention to what changed in French-mandate Syria, and what those changes entailed, Benjamin White argues for a careful reappraisal of the term 'minority'. Within a few years of World War I, the term had become fundamental to public understandings of national and international politics, law and society. Minorities (and majorities) were taken to be an objective reality, both in the present and the past. In Syria, the mandate period saw the consolidation of the nation-state form, despite French attempts to create territorial, political and legal divisions. There was a trend towards a coherent national territory with fixed borders and uniform state authority within them, while the struggle to control the state was played out in the language of nationalism - developments in the post-Ottoman Levant that closely paralleled events in Europe at the same time, following the demise of the Austro-Hungarian and tsarist empires. Through close attention to what changed in French mandate Syria, and what those changes meant, the book argues for a careful rethinking of a term too often used as an objective description of reality
