The chapters are written by psychologists who have used the methods, procedures and theories of industrial and organizational psychology to help the vulnerable people of the world. They are personal stories of psychologists using their expertise in some of the most dangerous and complex parts of the world in order to help those more vulnerable in society. The authors describe their motivation for undertaking such activities, their application of the disciplines methods and procedures, their successes and failures, what they personally gained from their experiences and how their experiences impacted their discipline. They described their work in Afghanistan at a time when war lords were battling each other for dominance, poverty stricken parts of South Africa, Haiti after the earthquakes, New Orleans after the hurricane and Lesotho Africa where girls learned confidence and entrepreneurship skills to avoid risky behavior. Authors describe how they persuade governments to include the principles of 'decent work' into their poverty reducing program that was to be supported by the World Bank. A graduate student describes how his emotions at discovering a dual salary system for local and foreign college teachers motivated his research agenda and life's work. Psychologists teach entrepreneurship and turn job seekers into job providers. As a result of their experiences the boundaries of industrial and organizational psychology have been expanded. Young people entering the field will have choices of venues in which to work. And no longer will this branch of psychology be perceived as a servant of powerful organizations with the only goal of making them more successful and more powerful. Industrial and organizational psychology will have a humanitarian side as well that will serve the needs of the vulnerable

Kurzfassung: This collection explores how the Capability Approach (CA) can be 'brought out of the realm of ideas' to the 'realm of policy and practice'. Despite its undeniable contributions, one of the critiques against the CA is the difficulty of its application. How can human capabilities be articulated and promoted in practice? Is the CA applicable in the Global South and the Global North? What are some of the challenges encountered in its application and how can they be addressed? The authors seek to answer these research questions, making an important analytical and empirical contribution to the CA and its application. Through a series of case studies from the Global North (France, Germany and the UK) and the Global South (India, Egypt, Brazil, Ghana and Mongolia), they provide useful insights not only into the different ways and contexts in which the CA can be applied, but also into the various challenges that are encountered during these applications and the means to overcome these challenges. The volume is a valuable resource for researchers, graduate students, practitioners and academics alike. It bridges the gap between development theory and practice by explaining the importance of CA applications and the contributions these can make to the refinement of the approach itself

Wie kamen sie zu ihrer Rolle, welche Motive treiben sie in ihrem Engagement an, welche Wertvorstellungen vertreten sie? Die Studie ermöglicht detaillierte Einblicke in die Funktionsweise von Zivilgesellschaft in sozial schwachen Stadtteilen. Sie benennt Hindernisse und Schwierigkeiten für die Aktiven - zeigt aber auch Perspektiven, wie das partizipative Versprechen der modernen Bürgergesellschaft für sozial Benachteiligte eingelöst werden könnte.

Das weltweit diskutierte Manifest renommierter Autoren stellt klar: Dies kann nur in einer sozialen Ordnung gelingen, die sich auf eine gemeinsame Menschheit, auf Prinzipien einer gemeinsamen Vergesellschaftung, auf das Prinzip der Individualität und auf die Akzeptanz kreativer Opposition beruft.

Kurzfassung: In den bisherigen Forschungen zu »muslimischen« Denkerinnen und Denkern sind die dichotomisch verwendeten Begriffe »Moderne« und »Islam« zentral. Dabei wird »Moderne« meist mit »westlich«, »säkular«, »reformerisch« und neuerdings »global« gleichgesetzt - und »Islam« mit »orientalisch«, »religiös«, »traditionell« und »partikular«.Abbas Poya nimmt einen Wechsel der »Erzählperspektive« vor. Anhand von vier gegenwärtig wichtigen iranischen Autoren - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush und Malekyan - untersucht er den Transformationsprozess in den heutigen islamisch-intellektuellen Diskursen im Lichte global vorherrschender postkolonialer Zustände und zeigt, dass ihre Gedankengänge durch die sogenannten islamischen/orientalischen Ideen ebenso geformt sind wie durch die vermeintlich säkularen/westlichen Vorstellungen

Kurzfassung: In previous research on »Muslim« thinkers and philosophers, the dichotomously applied terms »modern« and »Islam« are central. Therein, »modern« is mostly equated with »Western«, »secular«, »reformist«, and, most recently, »global«, whereas »Islam« is equated with »oriental«, »religious«, »traditional«, and »particular«.Abbas Poya breaks from the »narrative perspective«: On the basis of four current and important Iranian writers - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush, and Malekyan - he examines the transformation process in today's Islamic intellectual discourses in the light of global dominant post-colonial conditions and shows that the thought processes are shaped by so-called Islamic/oriental ideas as well as by supposed secular/western ideas
