Abstract: This case walks the reader through a recent study investigating social media use and online risk behaviour. Online surveys have many advantages but they also provide their own unique challenges. By sharing their experiences, the authors highlight the issues that one may face when recruiting for an online survey and offer our advice on how to overcome these obstacles. Topics include thinking about sample bias, where to recruit online, how to use snowball sampling, overcoming challenges around recruiting minors and how to design your survey to appeal to potential participants. The demographics of the sample are also discussed

Abstract: In this article, the authors discuss their experiences of using photography and video while observing contentious parades and protests in Belfast. They show how their use of these methods drew them into a series of unplanned for non-verbal interactions with other event participants who were also freely and abundantly using photographic and filming equipment to capture their own images

Abstract: While target market segmentation is one of the most fundamental and celebrated concepts in marketing, targeting at-risk ethnic minorities with products considered harmful is simultaneously viewed as unethical, bordering on criminal. At the same time, it appears that minority wine consumers may feel ignored by wine marketers, distributors, and producers, despite the fact that ethnic minorities (African Americans, along with Asians and Hispanics) are the fastest-growing market segment in the United States. This study characterises this phenomenon as a case of the market segment 'peering through the looking glass' (a reference to Alice in the classic tale 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland', and her desire to be on the other side of a mirror or looking glass)

Abstract: This article reflects on Pauline McGovern's experience as a hearing-impaired participant observer in a small voluntary organisation. She chose this method to explore practice in the organisation holistically, because it fitted with my research aim which was to look at how the group developed over time. The analysis was influenced by the work of Pierre Bourdieu on personal orientation to social situations (habitus) and the resources that people use in interaction (capitals)

Abstract: This case study describes a research project conducted with girls aged 11-13 years about their everyday engagement with `tween' popular culture. The study originated in the context of widespread claims being made in popular culture texts and various institutional reports that girls are being sexualised by 'sexualised' media representations. In keeping with the topic, ages, interests and skills of pre-teen girls, the project adopted focus groups and media video diaries as its methods. The case study takes the reader through each stage of the project from its inception to completion

Abstract: This case study uses a mixed-methods approach that combines statistical analysis of an original data set on the use of presidential powers in nine Central and Eastern European democracies with qualitative elite interviews in four selected countries. It focuses on the 65 semi-structured interviews that the author conducted with political elites in Estonia, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia and the challenges of nesting them into the statistical analysis. In particular, it addresses problems of how to prepare interviews based on quantitative findings and sampling strategies to counter bias through non-response

Abstract: This case study provides an overview of a 5-year-long PhD project that examines the generic features and moves that exist in Instant Messenger Cooperative Development sessions. The case describes the ins and outs of collecting computer-mediated communication data and the issues one needs to consider when transcribing the data. It then explains the researcher's particular methods for coding data, building categories, and creating a generic model of a prototypical online session. Finally, it highlights some of the problems the researcher experienced in the course of the research project

Abstract: There is considerable debate among social scientists about the validity of cross-cultural measures of parenting. We conducted a study using survey data from adolescents in 12 national or ethnic groups in Africa, Asia, Australia, the Balkans, Europe, and the Middle East to determine whether adolescents validated the substantive content of existing survey measures of supportive parental behaviors. In the survey, adolescents were asked to report, in their own words, what their parents did that made them feel loved. This case study examines the particular challenges of coding brief, open-ended responses to survey questions from different cultural groups. I describe how we developed and implemented a coding scheme that, ideally, allowed for culturally unique parenting behaviors to be measured but also was applicable across cultures

Abstract: This case study describes the process of using multiple perspectives (e.g. social and developmental psychology) and methods (e.g. implicit and explicit measures) to answer one's questions and discuss the challenges and benefits of doing so. The research process is compared to an everyday activity (cooking), to elucidate the ways in which a potentially unfamiliar scholarly approach is similar to aspects of life with which readers may have more experience. There is also a behind-the-scenes look at one particular research program, which combined social and developmental psychology

Abstract: This project explored the everyday use of the social network site Facebook by first-year undergraduate students in their transition to university. This was done by using a longitudinal study over one academic year. A connective ethnographic approach was used, which involved being with and observing the student participants on Facebook and face-to-face, within the university environment. Participant observation, field notes, screenshots of Facebook, questionnaires, interviews and focus groups were the main methods of data collection

Abstract: The detailed interview is a classic method of qualitative data collection. To be conducted effectively, interviews demand considerable skill and judgment. Nowhere is this more critical than when working with participants from disadvantaged and marginalised populations and when the research examines stigmatised conditions and taboo issues. To explore the techniques involved in researching these issues, this case study unpacks the approach taken for the Caribbean Masculinities Project, which used in-depth interviewing to explore 'coming of age' and 'becoming a man' among 138 diverse young Caribbean men from eight countries. The practical experiences and the lessons learned are outlined

Abstract: This study provides an understanding of bottom-up community empowerment in Australia. Bottom-up empowerment refers to the social change process that people initiate to gain control over resources including decisions that shape their lives. Thus, the study involved an examination of how disadvantaged community groups use collective action to change their situation. These included an examination of their organisation, function, activities and also an understanding of the context under which these community groups function from their own perspectives. The questions asked were concerned with both social structure and collective action, and the research approach was qualitative

Abstract: This case study is about using narrative archival sources in the social sciences, a research method which is distinct from using archival data that are statistical in nature, such as birth cohort data or archived qualitative data that have already been subject to primary analysis. It is concerned with using archival sources as central to the social scientific research process and describes a study which is using narrative archival data, namely, diary narratives collected by contributors to mass observation, to study food and families in hard times

Drawing on a recent research project in which the author spoke to exiled Tibetans living in New York City, he discusses the ways in which their resistance to a standard, seated interview allowed for a new form of story gathering to develop: walking while interviewing. The benefits of a mobile interview are discussed at length

Abstract: Care is one of the most deeply shared feelings on earth. It is a universal need that everyone benefits from at some point in their life whether in public or private. Well care for individuals, especially aging and disabled individuals, is fundamental to creating a developed, ethical, and engaged society. In this case study, the authors turn to their experiences as qualitative researchers to consider the methodological tensions and challenges involved when conducting ethnographic fieldwork where the bodies of participants regularly experience injury, illness, and pain

Abstract: The study aims to develop a discursive approach to first impression formation. A topic of social psychological inquiry for over 85 years, first impressions are currently studied employing an experimental methodology and a cognitive framework. This research tradition has generated a wealth of knowledge on first impression formation as a cognitive phenomenon, while systematically neglecting its vernacular manifestation. The article addresses this matter through the use of discourse analysis informed by a social psychological framework

Abstract: In response to ongoing separation, a number of 'cross-community' projects exist across North Belfast, which aim to bring people together from the 'two communities'. Many of these projects are geared towards young people and operate at a grassroots and community level. Cross-community youth projects are taking place within highly localized settings and rely on the work of self-motivated individuals, each with varying professional social networks. A vibrant social network is a precursor to the bringing to scale of these localized initiatives; problematically, very little is known about the professional relations among youth leaders

Abstract: Hermeneutic phenomenology informed two qualitative methodologies used in Shelley Hannigan's doctoral research: narrative case studies and auto-ethnography. Through these methodologies, she investigated the phenomenon of place and identity in visual artistic practice. Four narrative case studies of four artists were developed using experience-focused narrative inquiry and thematic analysis. Auto-ethnography was used to investigate the phenomenon of place and identity within her own practice as visual artist

Abstract: This case study reflects on methodological choices and their implications when planning research on and seeking access to a workplace setting. The choice of a mixed-methods approach is explained in its connection to the research problem, and a detailed illustration of the research design and its implications is provided. In particular, the importance of negotiation and methodological flexibility is highlighted here in the process of gaining access to the research field. In a workplace setting, the highly unequal distribution of power between researchers and gatekeepers can transform the process of access in a complex bargaining stage which presents risks that may severely affect the researchers' ability to address their research questions

Abstract: This example of methods in action involves a worked-through analysis of occupational data taken from the 1921 Census of England and Wales. The case takes the reader through the various stages of analysis, starting with the extraction of raw data from published Census volumes through their input into the software program Excel, culminating in the production of various types of graphical representations. This is complemented by a short interpretative section that illustrates how such data can be incorporated into wider social scientific discourse

Abstract: This case explores the application of a combined approach to discourse analysis to the topic of 'older motherhood'. In it, we discuss the forms of discourse analysis that are generally applied within psychology, namely, Foucauldian discourse analysis and discursive psychology, and the strengths and limitations of these approaches. Furthermore, we discuss how these two approaches might be combined for the purpose of qualitative psychological research. We demonstrate how such a combined approach was developed and applied to the topic of 'older motherhood', and finally, we offer some guidance on how others might appropriate a similar approach in their research projects

Abstract: This case study describes the process used to obtain a representative sample in an immigrant community. A mixed-methods approach was utilized, including a geographic boundary study, abstraction of census data, and key informant and brief random interviews. This information was integrated to construct a sampling frame from which a two-stage, random cluster sampling procedure was implemented. This case study illustrates the challenges of selecting a representative sample in a dynamic community to elicit valid and reliable information about the impact of a multi-level intervention on residents

Abstract: This case documents a participatory arts-based research project that took place over the 2012-2013 school year at a US Midwestern, urban middle school. In this account, we, the adult research partners, describe the participatory research process from our partnership formation to project evaluation. The primary methodology employed was Videovoice, a participatory data generation tool through which collaborators create videos to address social problems. The project explored three research questions: (1) What social problems do middle-school girls identify as important, challenging, and in need of change? (2) What actions do the girls describe as necessary to improving these social problems? (3) What are the perceived impacts of participatory, collaborative research with the girls?

Abstract: Policy and governance-orientated research typically begins with 'a problem', rather than the constructs of a particular theoretical perspective, particularly when motivated by practical utility of findings. Focused on 'the problem' of adapting to climate change in policy subsystems, this case draws from a PhD study (Bosomworth, 2012) that was funded by the Bushfire Co-operative Research Centre (CRC) of Australia - a research collaboration between research institutions and end users such as industries, communities and governments

Abstract: This case discusses the use of ethnography in a study with young children. The study uncovers how one multi-ethnic reception class in the North of England (4-5 year-olds) explored identity, diversity and (in)equality within their school peer interactions; and argues that ethnography was the most appropriate methodology to use, as it allowed the researcher to build up relationships of trust with children and gave them the time to learn how to listen to young children's 'voice'

Abstract: This case study addresses how participant observation sessions and semi-structured interviews were combined in a PhD study concluded in 2011. Its principles can be applied to other mixed-qualitative methods research projects. It considers the advantages of the methods used as well as how the methodological, theoretical and practical challenges that the methods presented were managed during the research. Specifically, the case illuminates the advantages and challenges of using these qualitative methods to produce accounts of everyday thought and practice that are both plausible (rather than valid/accurate), that is, credible to gay men and the academic community, and transferable (rather than replicable), that is, could be heard in similar post-industrial cities with growing gay cultures or 'scenes'

Abstract: Erving Goffman's Frame Analysis is introduced (together with several of Goffman's basic concepts, including 'strips', 'frames', 'keys', 'fabrications', etc.) and applied to 'bomb talk' (i.e. the different ways in which Westerners discuss and/or refer to the reality of nuclear weapons). This analysis confirms (as Goffman predicts) that the manner in which everyday life is conceptualized and subsequently transformed is extraordinarily flexible. The analysis of 'bomb talk' demonstrates that we are so adept at 'keying' the threat of nuclear weaponry that we appear unable to grapple effectively with its reality, that is, that we are culturally asleep. Is this true of everything in our lives? This is for you to discover by conducting your own frame analyses of the phenomena that you consider most consequential and intriguing

Abstract: In 2002, John Fulton commenced a study which explored the ways in which participation in boxing could lead to the development of capital. This case study provides an account of one aspect of that larger study and, as such, focuses on the involvement of young men in amateur boxing, rather than professional boxing. The methods used to collect data were interviews and observation. This account examines the thinking behind the design of the study, and the ways in which theoretical issues are related to the findings

Abstract: This case study describes methods in action for employing a case study research design. The researcher describes her experiences with collecting and analyzing qualitative data to better understand the work-family experiences of married, employed mothers of preschool-age children. Data for the case study were collected using interviews and activity logs. The researcher had to overcome anxieties and uncertainties to utilize these methods for the first time. Data analysis was achieved using quantitative interpretations of the activity logs and transcribing and coding the qualitative data from the interviews. Readers are expected to gain a better understanding of the methods used in this case study, and an appreciation for the thought process involved in making decisions throughout a research project

Abstract: The methodology to access the pre-conscious discussed in this case study originates in research which was concerned with highlighting the neglect of the pre-conscious as a characteristic of agency or people. This case study outlines a methodology based on life-history interviews for accessing the pre-conscious and examines the particular challenges involved in documenting this elusive aspect of agency. This methodology is explored in the context of research on unconscious bias which is argued to be a key factor which perpetuates gender inequality in the workplace

The case shows that social media can be a relevant data source that can lead to valid research results, if research methods are carefully considered both epistemologically and practically

Abstract: In 2007 and 2008, Rachel Kulick worked with a team of adult and youth researchers from Youth Media Action, an independent media outlet, on a participatory action research project to better understand the media needs and interests of urban youth. This study centres on training and working with a group of youth researchers to conduct a community needs assessment with urban youth, media educators, and parents that included focus groups, interviews, and an online survey. It brings into relief the author's experiences doing this work with specific attention to some of the possibilities and challenges of expanding the boundaries of research to include youth from marginalised communities that are rarely included in these circles

Abstract: Over the years, researchers from different disciplines have used a wide range of research methods to assess the views of children, especially qualitative methods such as focus groups and small group discussions. Large-scale quantitative surveys are much less common, even though they are a valuable way of comparing data from across different age groups and countries and over time. This case study describes how a pilot survey was carried out in Northern Ireland in June 2008 to test the feasibility of running a large-scale quantitative research with children

Abstract: Although there are many potential new insights to be gained through advancing research on the clients of male sex workers, significant social, ethical and methodological challenges to accessing this population exist. This research project case explores attempts to recruit a population that does not typically form a cohesive or coherent 'community' and often avoids self-identifying to mitigate the stigma attached to buying sex

Abstract: Contemporary Chinese families are experiencing an increasingly rapid pace of change due to economic growth and the consequences of the One Child policy. These changes are leading to changing expectations concerning gender roles and relationships in families, including those of fathers and daughters. This study examines daughters' and fathers' perspectives of father-daughter relationships among two cohorts of girls aged 13-14 and 16-17 years in Shanghai. It seeks to understand how girls and fathers construct their identities as teenagers and as fathers, their family practices and how they negotiate parental authority and adolescent independence

Abstract: As part of a larger project addressing (the future of) identity management technologies, the author's wanted to survey public perceptions and use of such technologies. Keen to avoid or at least mitigate the effects of survey fatigue among our respondents, they decided to create a research game. In doing so, they would create for respondents a character and a mission and transform their research questions into game scenarios and challenges. This case study discusses the process involved and the ways that the principles of gamification can be adopted in relatively low-cost ways by researchers working with limited resources. Several matters for consideration and potential drawbacks are also identified and considered; as with any innovative approach, researchers must be reflexive, but they can be rewarded with rich data - and happy respondents

Abstract: Several studies suggest that lesbians and gay men suffer disproportionately from loneliness and isolation as they age. There is also evidence that group or network membership has positive benefits and may serve to reduce isolation and depression. Jill Wilkens' research explored the issue of loneliness and isolation in older lesbians, using a preliminary focus group followed by in-depth interviews to elicit the subjective experience of loneliness and isolation of 10 older lesbians attending an over-55s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) social group at a centre located in an industrial city in West Yorkshire

In this case analysis, they expose and discuss the messy process underlying all the apparent conceptual neatness of that title. How did this (order) come out of that (disorder)? They show that the sequence of question-design-answer is much more complicated in the reality of research than it is usually presented in methods textbooks, and that the three terms keep mutually informing each other throughout the research process

Abstract: This case study reports on indicative evidence that links real-world sporting events to spikes in real-time populations' reaction through self-reported social media updates. In turn, the case provides an analysis of frequency and sentiment of tweets containing the most popular UK hashtag connected to the London 2012 Olympics over a specified time period. This has consequences for conceptualising the relationship between social actors, events and social media and methodological strategies for understanding the dynamic (locomotive) reactions of populations

Abstract: The methodological research project case presented in this article is based on a study about the impact of the internationalization of work in the division of labor empirically focused on information technology work (funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft). The main goal of the project was to analyze how the internationalization of work affected the classifications of tasks and skill requirements and the codification of inequalities (particularly gender inequalities) between employees working in different areas of emerging transnational work-spaces. The methodological approach combines quantitative and qualitative data analysis distilled from case studies in six multinational enterprises successively collected and validated following the principle of triangulation

Abstract: In the field of political science and international relations, there is a robust debate over whether valid, scientifically sound findings are only derived from large statistical studies, or whether qualitative approaches such as case studies can offer an important, equally valid contribution to the field. This leads to the question, 'how can one engage in in-depth case studies that provide rich detail relevant to policy analysis, yet not give up the validity provided by large statistical studies that meet scientific criteria?'. Using Alexander George's method of structured, focused comparison, this case study illustrates a comparative study of a small number of cases can be fruitful and contribute to broader knowledge in the field

Abstract: Recent research efforts have taken advantage of functionality provided by Twitter's Application Programming Interface to develop methodologies to extract information that allows us to understand the growth of Twitter, its geographic spread and the processes by which particular Twitter users have attracted followers. From politicians to sporting teams, and from YouTube personalities to reality television stars, this technique enables us to gain an understanding of what prompts users to follow others on Twitter. This article outlines how we came upon this approach, describes the method we adopted to produce accession graphs and discusses their use in Twitter research. It also addresses the wider ethical implications of social network analytics, particularly in the context of a detailed study of the Twitter user base

Abstract: Violence in ice hockey is legitimised through the culture of the game. However, much research on this area has been undertaken through statistical quantitative research which is unable to assess the extent to which culture and character impact on the occurrence of violence in the game. This research takes a qualitative ethnographic methodology which focuses on in-depth observation and accounts of players in how they justify their violent behaviour and the extent of violent acts within the sport

The chosen methodology - conversations, observations, journaling, photography and art - reflects the challenges the participants and I faced as we negotiated different worlds: the Somali world and the Australian world. This case study reveals my emotions as I was challenged by the dominant culture's judgement of where a White woman should be positioned in relation to the 'Other', and as I experienced a lack of trust in my capabilities and an unsettling of my own identity

Abstract: The aim of the research on which this case study is based is to investigate the perceptions, experiences and impacts of stigma and discrimination on female street-based sex workers. Ethnography is both a research design and methodology that can be used to reach such vulnerable populations. A methodological framework of feminism is also used to ensure that for the researcher, reflexivity and self-disclosure can be a tool to engage sex workers and develop relationships. A total of 24 in-depth interviews, a year of observational data and a collection of media and news-related material (unobtrusive methods) were used to collect and triangulate data

Abstract: During summer 2011, women politicians and bureaucrats were asked about the role of women as leaders addressing terrorist violence. The women were involved in political institutions and in social movement organizations aimed at peace, prisoners' rights, and/or victims' rights. This case discusses the use of fieldwork and interviews in the context of terrorism. We explore several important themes of concern to field researchers: 'going native', using human subjects protocols, the shifting research contexts of violence and peace, and reflexivity

Abstract: This project was designed to study the lifestyle migration of British migrants in Thailand and Malaysia and Hong Kong Chinese migrants to mainland China. With a focus on the meanings, motivations and outcomes of lifestyle migration in Asian contexts, the goal was to tell practice stories. Practice stories explain a phenomenon by describing how it develops over time as norms, rules and organisational arrangements are acted on and adapted by individuals as part of their daily lives, in the context of their communities, groups, networks and families. This article provides an explanation of the research project and its initial aims; describes what is meant by practice stories, and indicates their role in the design of the research

Abstract: The UK national media framed the riot in the Stokes Croft area of Bristol on 21 April 2011 as a manifestation of the local campaign against the opening of a Tesco supermarket in Cheltenham Road, an arterial route through the area. New media technologies enabled alternative perspectives on these events to emerge that not only rejected this link but also criticised the 'heavy-handed' policing operation in the Telepathic Heights squat to remove petrol bombs that were allegedly being prepared for use against the supermarket. This project set out to examine whether the use of YouTube to share acts of 'inverse surveillance' elicited support for the viewpoints of local residents that had been largely absent from the media coverage of the disturbances

Abstract: Facebook users tend to claim their identities implicitly rather than explicitly; they 'show' rather than 'tell' and stress group identities over personal ones. In this case study, I unpack the methodology of content analysis and describe in detail the major steps we took in applying this method to the study of Facebook pages. I also reflect and comment on the methodological issues we encountered in our study and offer some advice for those who are interested in using this method

Abstract: While performing a background investigation into sociological research on Facebook, work that had been done by Christine Brickman Bhutta came to my attention, where Bhutta discussed and evaluated the use of Facebook as a sampling frame. I found this of great interest; in particular, I was curious regarding the use of Facebook to research activity on Facebook itself. I therefore undertook to adapt Bhutta's method to my own experimental research design. I chose to implement this method for the pilot study of my research, partly to test this method's efficacy and viability

Abstract: Community-based action research is a systematic approach that allows those affected by a social issue to work collaboratively to address it. While faculty members are trained to conduct social science research, many are not trained to carry out community-based action research. This case describes a community-based action research project that involved mobilizing an urban recreation center's stakeholders to counteract various safety issues affecting the delivery of a youth baseball program

Abstract: This chapter examines the challenges and possibilities of using ethnocinema as a research method that responds to the increasingly intercultural work of educators, artists, activists, ethnographers and other social scientists. Here, I offer suggestions for ways in which beginning researchers can build ethical collaborative studies, research methodologies that address the experiences of both researchers and their participants and methods that use film and video as more than just tools for data collection

Abstract: Although some longitudinal studies of lifecourse transitions have been undertaken, these tend not to focus on how everyday life changes, and the concomitant environmental impacts. The Exploring Lifestyle Changes in Transition study undertook an in-depth exploration into the way people's practices and lifestyles changed during two major lifecourse transitions, and the extent to which these changes may be considered more or less sustainable. The study used a mixed-methods, longitudinal approach by following 80 participants in four different locations in England and Scotland as they either became first-time parents or retired

Abstract: Since 2001, the European Social Survey has been mapping attitudinal and behavioural changes in Europe's social, political and moral climate. Recognised for its rigorous standards and high-quality data, the European Social Survey is used to inform academic and political debate, allowing scholars, policymakers and think tanks to measure and interpret change over time. This case study outlines the European Social Survey lifecycle, from initial research design through to analysis and dissemination activities, providing a detailed description of the research methods employed and the challenges associated with delivering a high-quality cross-national social research project

Abstract: In 2009, the government's Department for Education commissioned a team of researchers at NatCen Social Research to evaluate the effectiveness of the youth development/teenage pregnancy prevention programme 'Teens and Toddlers'. Previous studies had positive findings but had not been very rigorous in terms of methodology and methods used. The authors evaluated the programme through a randomised controlled trial, in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Bryson Purdon Social Research. This case study provides an account of the stages in conducting a randomised controlled trial, from the initial scoping out of what exactly we were going to measure, coming up with the randomised controlled trial design, to reflecting on the possible methodological limitations of our research

Abstract: Gender transition refers to an individual's decision to live as a new gender that is different from the one associated with their assigned sex at birth. This is represented in the psychological literature primarily through reports on physical and psychological changes during gender transition. However, very little research exists into how these changes are experienced by those transitioning gender, specifically those in 'mid' or 'older' life. This case study briefly outlines the process of designing and carrying out a study into this research area, by examining a research project into the experience of gender transition in adulthood

Abstract: The expression concatenated exploration refers at once to a longitudinal research process and the resulting set of field studies that are linked together in, as it were, a chain leading to cumulative, often formal, grounded theory. Concatenated exploratory research is rare in the social sciences (although least so in anthropology). The goal of this case is to describe the nature of this special kind of continuous research effort and illustrate its crucial role in the development of a formal grounded theory of serious leisure
