    Abstract: While target market segmentation is one of the most fundamental and celebrated concepts in marketing, targeting at-risk ethnic minorities with products considered harmful is simultaneously viewed as unethical, bordering on criminal.     Abstract: There is considerable debate among social scientists about the validity of cross-cultural measures of parenting. We conducted a study using survey data from adolescents in 12 national or ethnic groups in Africa, Asia, Australia, the Balkans, Europe, and the Middle East to determine whether adolescents validated the substantive content of existing survey measures of supportive parental behaviors. In the survey, adolescents were asked to report, in their own words, what their parents did that made them feel loved. This case study examines the particular challenges of coding brief, open-ended responses to survey questions from different cultural groups. I describe how we developed and implemented a coding scheme that, ideally, allowed for culturally unique parenting behaviors to be measured but also was applicable across cultures

In this account, we, the adult research partners, describe the participatory research process from our partnership formation to project evaluation. The primary methodology employed was Videovoice, a participatory data generation tool through which collaborators create videos to address social problems. The project explored three research questions: (1) What social problems do middle-school girls identify as important, challenging, and in need of change?     Abstract: This case study addresses how participant observation sessions and semi-structured interviews were combined in a PhD study concluded in 2011. Its principles can be applied to other mixed-qualitative methods research projects. It considers the advantages of the methods used as well as how the methodological, theoretical and practical challenges that the methods presented were managed during the research.     Abstract: Erving Goffman's Frame Analysis is introduced (together with several of Goffman's basic concepts, including 'strips', 'frames', 'keys', 'fabrications', etc.) and applied to 'bomb talk' (i.e. the different ways in which Westerners discuss and/or refer to the reality of nuclear weapons). This analysis confirms (as Goffman predicts) that the manner in which everyday life is conceptualized and subsequently transformed is extraordinarily flexible. The analysis of 'bomb talk' demonstrates that we are so adept at 'keying' the threat of nuclear weaponry that we appear unable to grapple effectively with its reality, that is, that we are culturally asleep.     Abstract: This case study describes methods in action for employing a case study research design. The researcher describes her experiences with collecting and analyzing qualitative data to better understand the work-family experiences of married, employed mothers of preschool-age children. Data for the case study were collected using interviews and activity logs. The researcher had to overcome anxieties and uncertainties to utilize these methods for the first time. Data analysis was achieved using quantitative interpretations of the activity logs and transcribing and coding the qualitative data from the interviews.     Abstract: As part of a larger project addressing (the future of) identity management technologies, the author's wanted to survey public perceptions and use of such technologies. Keen to avoid or at least mitigate the effects of survey fatigue among our respondents, they decided to create a research game. In doing so, they would create for respondents a character and a mission and transform their research questions into game scenarios and challenges. This case study discusses the process involved and the ways that the principles of gamification can be adopted in relatively low-cost ways by researchers working with limited resources. Several matters for consideration and potential drawbacks are also identified and considered; as with any innovative approach, researchers must be reflexive, but they can be rewarded with rich data - and happy respondents

The women were involved in political institutions and in social movement organizations aimed at peace, prisoners' rights, and/or victims' rights. We explore several important themes of concern to field researchers: 'going native', using human subjects protocols, the shifting research contexts of violence and peace, and reflexivity

    Abstract: This project was designed to study the lifestyle migration of British migrants in Thailand and Malaysia and Hong Kong Chinese migrants to mainland China. With a focus on the meanings, motivations and outcomes of lifestyle migration in Asian contexts, the goal was to tell practice stories. Practice stories explain a phenomenon by describing how it develops over time as norms, rules and organisational arrangements are acted on and adapted by individuals as part of their daily lives, in the context of their communities, groups, networks and families. This article provides an explanation of the research project and its initial aims; describes what is meant by practice stories, and indicates their role in the design of the research

    Abstract: The UK national media framed the riot in the Stokes Croft area of Bristol on 21 April 2011 as a manifestation of the local campaign against the opening of a Tesco supermarket in Cheltenham Road, an arterial route through the area. New media technologies enabled alternative perspectives on these events to emerge that not only rejected this link but also criticised the 'heavy-handed' policing operation in the Telepathic Heights squat to remove petrol bombs that were allegedly being prepared for use against the supermarket. This project set out to examine whether the use of YouTube to share acts of 'inverse surveillance' elicited support for the viewpoints of local residents that had been largely absent from the media coverage of the disturbances

    Abstract: While performing a background investigation into sociological research on Facebook, work that had been done by Christine Brickman Bhutta came to my attention, where Bhutta discussed and evaluated the use of Facebook as a sampling frame. I found this of great interest; in particular, I was curious regarding the use of Facebook to research activity on Facebook itself. I therefore undertook to adapt Bhutta's method to my own experimental research design.     Abstract: In 2009, the government's Department for Education commissioned a team of researchers at NatCen Social Research to evaluate the effectiveness of the youth development/teenage pregnancy prevention programme 'Teens and Toddlers'.
