    Abstract: Internationale Migration und die zunehmende Diversität der Bevölkerung sind hochaktuelle gesellschaftspolitische Themen in Deutschland. Die Herausforderungen vor Ort sind in den Kommunen und Wohnquartieren spür- und sichtbar. Insbesondere in den Lebensbereichen Arbeiten, Wohnen und Bildung stellt sich die Frage, wie Integration gelingen kann. Der vorliegende Sammelband setzt sich umfassend mit den Themen Migration und Migrationspolitik, Segregation und Integration, mit Konzepten wie Hybridität, diversity und Transkulturalität im integrationstheoretischen Diskurs auseinander. Er bleibt jedoch nicht auf der theoretisch-konzeptionellen Ebene, sondern zeigt Handlungsmöglichkeiten in der Praxis auf. Empirische Fallstudien wie z.B. zur Segregation von Migrant(inn)en in Großstädten, zu Wohnstandortentscheidungen türkeistämmiger Eigentümer(innen) der zweiten Generation und zu Maßnahmen städtischer Integrationspolitik in Europa zeigen, vor welchen Herausforderungen Politik und Gesellschaft stehen. Die Autor(inn)en setzen sich kritisch mit der gegenwärtigen Forschungspraxis und Integrationspolitik auseinander. Und sie geben Beispiele für eine verbesserte Integration in den Kommunen, im Wohnquartier, im Bildungssystem, in der Wohnungswirtschaft und der Ökonomie. Theoretische Analysen werden mit Handlungsanweisungen für Planung und Politik verbunden.
    Abstract: International migration and the increasing diversity of the population are highly topical social-political issues in Germany. Local challenges in municipalities and residential areas are tangible and visible. The question as to how integration can be successful is particularly pressing in the spheres of work, housing and education. This edited volume comprehensively addresses the themes migration and migration policy, segregation and integration, and considers concepts such as hybridity, diversity and transculturality in integration theory discourse. However, discussion is not restricted to the theoretical-conceptual level but includes illustration of possible courses of action in practice. Empirical case studies on, for example, the segregation of migrants in large cities, the neighbourhood choice of second-generation Turkish-origin homeowners and urban integration policy measures in Europe, reveal the challenges faced by politics and society. The authors critically review current research practice and integration policy. They provide examples of improved integration in municipalities, residential areas, the education system, the housing market and the economy. Theoretical analyses are linked to planning and policy recommendations.

    Abstract: Although migration and integration have become important concepts today as a result of globalization, migration movements, integration, and multiculturalism have always been part of the history of Europe. Few people realize how many ethnic groups participated in migration within Europe or into Europe and this ignorance has grave consequences for the social and political status of immigrants. Newly available to an English-speaking audience, this encyclopaedia presents a systematic overview of the existing scholarship regarding migration within and into Europe. The first section contains survey studies of the various regions and countries in Europe covering the last centuries. The second section presents information on about 220 individual groups of migrants from the Sephardic Jews emigration from Spain and Portugal in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to the present-day migration of old-age pensioners to the holiday villages in the sun.
