    Abstract: This book deals with the economic impact of technological changes and the rise of passenger shipping on social relations on board and ashore in European shipping industries between c.1850 and 2000. The changes in motive power, communication techniques and positioning technologies and the rise of passenger shipping went together with the creation of new tasks and functions and the marginalization or disappearance of traditional jobs and skills. This book presents case-studies on changes in different maritime professions between the middle of the nineteenth century and the end of the twentieth century, covering the shipping industries of a variety of seafaring countries in Europe. The subjects include changes in maritime labour at large, changes in specific groups of deck, catering or engine room personnel, such as captains, cooks, catering personnel, engineers, or radio-operators. A number of chapters employ a prosopographical or micro-historical approach, while others apply a spatial perspective, analyze business records, materials from professional associations or distil information from large sets of quantitative data. This book will be of interest to academics and students of economic history, maritime and labour history. Karel Davids is Professor Emeritus of Economic and Social History at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He has published and taught on economic and social history, maritime history, the history of technology and global history. Joost Schokkenbroek has been Executive Director of the Vancouver Maritime Museum since July 2017. Prior to this he was affiliated with The Kendall Whaling Museum in the USA (1988-1990) and Het Scheepvaartmuseum (The Dutch National Maritime Museum) in Amsterdam (1991-2017), where he worked as Chief Curator, in combination with a Professorship of Maritime History and Maritime Heritage at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. .

    Abstract: Black communities have been making major contributions to Europe's social and cultural life and landscapes for centuries. However, their achievements largely remain unrecognized by the dominant societies, as their perspectives are excluded from traditional modes of marking public memory. For the first time in European history, leading Black scholars and activists examine this issue – with first-hand knowledge of the eight European capitals in which they live. Highlighting existing monuments, memorials, and urban markers they discuss collective narratives, outline community action, and introduce people and places relevant to Black European history, which continues to be obscured today.

    Abstract: Vorstellungen Europas, Selbst- und Fremdbilder, Raum- und Grenzkonstruktionen wurden und werden besonders seit der Sattelzeit um 1800 gerade auch über Diskurse eines ‚Abendlandes‘ geformt. Abendlanddiskurse lassen sich als polyvalent einsetzbare, modellier- und adaptierbare Diskurskomplexe und als Gewebe von Erinnerungsdiskursen bezeichnen, die mal stärker nationalistisch, mal stärker religiös, mal stärker universalistisch ausgeformt, mehr oder weniger stark auf Grenzkonstruktion ausgerichtet sind und mehr oder weniger konkret politisch verwendet werden. Dem interdisziplinären Band wird die These zugrunde gelegt, dass Abendlanddiskurse wesentlich durch den Gebrauch von Gedächtnisbeständen, durch eine Pluralität miteinander verwobener Erinnerungsnarrative konstruiert werden. Im Fokus der Beiträge von Historikerinnen, Geschichtsdidaktikern und Literaturwissenschaftlern aus Deutschland, Österreich, Frankreich, Italien, Belgien und der Schweiz stehen Intellektuellendiskurse und deren Vermittlung im öffentlichen Raum, Literatur und Kunst.

    Abstract: This volume offers new insights into the radical shift in attitudes towards death and the dead body that occurred in temperate Bronze Age Europe. Exploring the introduction and eventual dominance of cremation, Marie-Louise Stig Sørenson and Katharina Rebay-Salisbury apply a case-study approach to investigate how this transformation unfolded within local communities located throughout central to northern Europe. They demonstrate the deep link between the living and the dead body, and propose that the introduction of cremation was a significant ontological challenge to traditional ideas about death. In tracing the responses to this challenge, the authors focus on three fields of action: the treatment of the dead body, the construction of a burial place, and ongoing relationships with the dead body after burial. Interrogating cultural change at its most fundamental level, the authors elucidate the fundamental tension between openness towards the 'new' and the conservative pull of the familiar and traditional

    Abstract: How was power justified in late medieval Europe? What justifications did people find convincing, and why? Based around the two key intellectual movements of the fifteenth century, conciliarism in the church and humanism, this study explores the justifications for the distribution of power and authority in fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century Europe. By examining the arguments that convinced people in this period, Joseph Canning demonstrates that it was almost universally assumed that power had to be justified but that there were fundamentally different kinds of justification employed. Against the background of juristic thought, Canning presents a new interpretative approach to the justifications of power through the lenses of conciliarism, humanism and law, throwing fresh light on our understanding of both conciliarists' ideas and the contribution of Italian Renaissance humanists

Er fragt nach Deutungsmustern, mit denen sie ihr Verhältnis zum Meer bestimmten und nach Praktiken und Strategien, die sie im Umgang mit ihm entwickelten. Er fragt nach Reichweite und Einfluss maritimer Welten und nach ökonomischen, ökologischen, politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Vernetzungen. Er fragt nach Transfers und Wechselwirkungen maritimer Aktivitäten. Alle diese Fragen rücken gerade das in den Mittelpunkt, was zwischen den landbasierten Machtzentren lag. Der Band bestimmt damit die Frühe Neuzeit als maritime Epoche.

    Abstract: Cities of Strangers illuminates life in European towns and cities as it was for the settled, and for the 'strangers' or newcomers who joined them between 1000 and 1500. Some city-states enjoyed considerable autonomy which allowed them to legislate on how newcomers might settle and become citizens in support of a common good. Such communities invited bankers, merchants, physicians, notaries and judges to settle and help produce good urban living. Dynastic rulers also shaped immigration, often inviting groups from afar to settle and help their cities flourish. All cities accommodated a great deal of difference - of language, religion, occupation - in shared spaces, regulated by law. But when, from around 1350, plague began regularly to occur within European cities, this benign cycle began to break down. High mortality rates led eventually to demographic crises and, as a result, less tolerant and more authoritarian attitudes emerged, resulting in violent expulsions of even long-settled groups. Tracing the development of urban institutions and using a wide range of sources from across Europe, Miri Rubin recreates a complex picture of urban life for settled and migrant communities over

    Abstract: In The Invention of Race in the European Middle Ages, Geraldine Heng questions the common assumption that the concepts of race and racisms only began in the modern era. Examining Europe's encounters with Jews, Muslims, Africans, Native Americans, Mongols, and the Romani ('Gypsies'), from the 12th through 15th centuries, she shows how racial thinking, racial law, racial practices, and racial phenomena existed in medieval Europe before a recognizable vocabulary of race emerged in the West. Analysing sources in a variety of media, including stories, maps, statuary, illustrations, architectural features, history, saints' lives, religious commentary, laws, political and social institutions, and literature, she argues that religion - so much in play again today - enabled the positing of fundamental differences among humans that created strategic essentialisms to mark off human groups and populations for racialized treatment. Her ground-breaking study also shows how race figured in the emergence of homo europaeus and the identity of Western Europe in this time.

    Abstract: Für eine moderne Stadtgeschichtsforschung hat sich die Wiederaneignung von Max Webers Überlegungen zum Typus der okzidentalen Stadt als besonders inspirierend erwiesen. Weniger präsent ist demgegenüber, dass in den Debatten der Zeit um 1900 der ökonomische Aspekt des Stadtbegriffs von ganz erheblicher Bedeutung gewesen ist. Dieser Zusammenhang ist am Werk von Max Weber ablesbar. Deutlicher noch findet er sich bei Werner Sombart ausgestaltet, der gegenüber Produzenten und Fernhändlern den Konsumenten eine zentrale Rolle für Stadtentstehung und Stadtentwicklung zuweist. Der vorliegende Sammelband prüft die Ertragskraft konsumgeschichtlicher Konzepte und bezieht sie auf aktuelle Problemzusammenhänge der mittelalterlichen Stadtgeschichte.

    Abstract: In den vergangenen Jahren vollzog sich eine deutlich beobachtbare Radikalisierung des Antisemitismus in Europa, die mit den islamistisch motivierten Terroranschlägen von Paris, Toulouse, Brüssel und Kopenhagen auch mörderische Konsequenzen hatte. Als Indikator für eine neue Qualität und Virulenz des Antisemitismus kann jedoch nicht nur der islamistische Antisemitismus gesehen werden, sondern auch die Zunahme von Antisemitismus in politisch und sozial arrivierten Kreisen und Milieus. Zugleich ist die Hemmschwelle für die Äußerung und Akzeptanz antisemitischer Ressentiments gesunken, sofern diese als „Israelkritik“ camoufliert sind. Parallel zu diesen Entwicklungen stellte der Antisemitismus sein Mobilisierungspotential für den politischen Protest auf der Straße unter Beweis, etwa im Rahmen der Mahnwachen für den Frieden und während des Gaza-Krieges 2014. Die Beiträge des Sammelbandes untersuchen Aspekte dieser Entwicklungen und befassen sich schwerpunktmäßig mit Antisemitismus in der öffentlichen Kommunikation, islamischen Antisemitismus und Antisemitismus in politischen Bewegungen. Soziale Kategorien wie Geschlecht, Ethnizität, sozialer Status oder das Alter einer Person sind ineinander verschränkt bzw. überkreuzen sich – und können daher auch gar nicht ohne ihre Wechselwirkungen untersucht werden. Diese Perspektive, die als »Intersektionsanalyse« inzwischen als sozialwissenschaftliches Paradigma gilt, wird in dem Band erstmals in vergleichender Perspektive auf die Frühe Neuzeit übertragen. Dem Programm einer »Historischen Intersektionsanalyse« folgend, fragen die dabei versammelten Fallstudien sowohl nach der Epochenspezifik sozialer Ungleichheiten als auch nach dem Wandel von Kategorien und deren Verschränkung. / »Entangled Differences« -- Social categories such as gender, ethnicity, status, and age do not exist in isolation, but rather are always interconnected. To analyze these categories and the relationships between them the concept of intersectionality has been developed in the social sciences. The present volume seeks to apply this approach to Early Modern history. From a comparative perspective the case studies collected here examine historically specific inequalities as well as changes within categories and their intersections.

    Abstract: As a teenager, I spent my time wondering why in sci-fi movies, every landscape, every object I could see was Western or Asian based. I've finally understood that somewhere our legacy had been locked in the past, that we couldn't be "futuristic" in the eyes of our fellow Europeans. We have to look behind our shoulders, get back to our traditions, seize the best of them and shape a future with it. This without forgetting we are part of the world, totally, unquestionably. The future is for me not only a matter of dialogue with the past, but and beyond everything a dialogue with the rest of the planet. Kossi Aguessy How is it possible to adequately capture histories of design in Africa, a continent with fifty-four countries? How can one avoid producing just another essentialising master narrative of "African Design"? How can one make sense of the many entangled yet often asymmetric and sometimes ambivalent histories of form-finding processes between Africa and Europe? In keeping with the premises of a global art and design history approach, the book offers a change of perspective: focusing on the mobility of people, objects and ideas - on flows between Africa and Europe as well as on a South-South axis - allows for multiple yet necessarily fragmented design histories to be identified and recognised. The contributors trace multi-faceted design case studies from a historical perspective, with attention to the present as well as towards possible futures.

    Abstract: This is the first book to examine the relationship between European antisemitism and Islamophobia from the Crusades until the twenty-first century in the principal flashpoints of the two racisms. With case studies ranging from the Balkans to the UK, the contributors take the debate away from politicised polemics about whether or not Muslims are the new Jews. Much previous scholarship and public discussion has focused on comparing European ideas about Jews and Judaism in the past with contemporary attitudes towards Muslims and Islam. This volume rejects this approach. Instead, it interrogates how the dynamic relationship between antisemitism and Islamophobia has evolved over time and space. The result is the uncovering of a previously unknown story in which European ideas about Jews and Muslims were indeed connected, but were also ripped apart. Religion, empire, nation-building, and war, all played their part in the complex evolution of this relationship. As well as a study of prejudice, this book also opens up a new area of inquiry: how Muslims, Jews, and others have responded to these historically connected racisms. The volume brings together leading scholars in the emerging field of antisemitism-Islamophobia studies who work in a diverse range of disciplines: anthropology, history, sociology, critical theory, and literature.     Abstract: Antisemitic stereotypes of Jews as capitalists have hindered research into the economic dimension of the Jewish past. The figure of the Jew as trader and financier dominated the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. But the economy has been central to Jewish life and the Jewish image in the world; Jews not only made money but spent money. This book is the first to investigate the intersection between consumption, identity, and Jewish history in Europe. It aims to examine the role and place of consumption within Jewish society and the ways consumerism generated and reinforced Jewish notions of belonging from the end of the eighteenth century to the beginning of the new millennium. It shows how the advances of modernization and secularization in the modern period increased the importance of consumption in Jewish life, making it a significant factor in the process of redefining Jewish identity.

    Abstract: Widows are often viewed as being marginalised in society, struggling to make a living and in need of financial and other support. However, as this extensively researched and wide-ranging book reveals, widows did, in fact, engage very effectively in economic activity, often being in charge of families, households and commercial enterprises. The book outlines how extensive widowhood was; examines the provisions made for the support of widows, including in the form of marriage contracts, dowries and charitable assistance; and provides numerous examples of widows being economically active, paying their way and involving themselves energetically in society - one notable example being Barbe-Nicole Clicquot, who established a very successful company producing La Veuve Clicquot champagne. Using statistical analysis and individual case studies, the book contrasts the situation in different parts of Europe, and between rural and urban areas, and shows how provision for widows both in law and in practice evolved over time. Overall, it contributes a great deal to women's history, helping to correct the image that women were victims of male society, and to family history, showing that exceptions to the "ideal" nuclear family were very common.     Abstract: This book examines social and medical responses to the disfigured face in early medieval Europe, arguing that the study of head and facial injuries can offer a new contribution to the history of early medieval medicine and culture, as well as exploring the language of violence and social interactions. Despite the prevalence of warfare and conflict in early medieval society, and a veritable industry of medieval historians studying it, there has in fact been very little attention paid to the subject of head wounds and facial damage in the course of war and/or punitive justice. The impact of acquired disfigurement —for the individual, and for her or his family and community—is barely registered, and only recently has there been any attempt to explore the question of how damaged tissue and bone might be treated medically or surgically. In the wake of new work on disability and the emotions in the medieval period, this study documents how acquired disfigurement is recorded across different geographical and chronological contexts in the period

    Abstract: Mit der Erschließung der Ozeane und der Entdeckung Amerikas begann die Globalisierung in der Frühen Neuzeit. Georg Jochum stellt dar, wie diese Entgrenzung der Welt, die in der Devise »Plus Ultra« ihren signifikanten Ausdruck fand, zum Basisparadigma der Moderne wurde. Der ambivalente Charakter der okzidentalen Zivilisation zwischen emanzipativer Weltoffenheit und kolonialer Weltbeherrschung hat hier seinen Ursprung. Auch die gegenwärtige ökologische Krise und die zunehmenden Spannungen in der Weltgesellschaft sind ferne Folgen dieser Entgrenzungsdynamik. Auf diese historische und zeitdiagnostische Analyse aufbauend werden Wege der Transformation hin zu einer zur reflexiven Selbstbegrenzung fähigen, nachhaltigeren Gesellschaft skizziert.

    Abstract: Im 20. Jahrhundert wurden in Europa mehr Menschen vertrieben und umgesiedelt als jemals zuvor in der Geschichte der Menschheit. Allerdings handelt es sich bei solchen Zwangsmigrationen weder um ein ausschließlich modernes noch um europäisches Phänomen: In fast allen Teilen der Welt ereigneten sich Umsiedlungen schon vor 1800. In diesem Band werden erstmals Beispiele aus ganz unterschiedlichen Weltregionen diskutiert und miteinander verglichen. Die Lektüre macht deutlich, wie die Umsiedlung von Bevölkerungsgruppen in verschiedenen Kontexten als politisches Mittel eingesetzt wurde. Wer die europäischen Zwangsumsiedlungen der Moderne verstehen will, sollte auch deren Vorgeschichten innerhalb und außerhalb Europas kennen.

    Abstract: Migration war immer ein wichtiger Aspekt der Geschichte der europäischen Integration. Die bestehende Literatur hat dieses Thema hauptsächlich von einer nationalen und sozioökonomischen Perspektive betrachtet.     Abstract: Movement of people has been a key feature in the whole history of European integration. While existing literature has mostly adopted national viewpoints and a socioeconomic perspective, this book integrates these existing fragmented analyses, views them from a broader perspective and places them in the wider context of the social and demographic transformation of Europe and the political and economic narrative of continental integration. It highlights the impact made by EC/EU immigration policies on the external political and economic relations of Europe and acknowledges that pre-1989 migration from East European countries is part of European integration. By showing that migration policies and their impact on European national societies and economies cannot be fully understood without taking into account the EC framework, this book, therefore, contributes to migration studies as a whole.

    Abstract: Minderheiten sind seit dem Beitritt des Deutschen Reiches zum Völkerbund (1926) ein zentraler Bestandteil der deutschen Außenpolitik. Ihnen kommt im Prozess der Europäisierung und der Auflösung nationaler Grenzen eine wichtige Rolle zu. Wie Minderheiten sich in Europa Gehör verschaffen können, ist in hohem Maße durch die Kulturpolitik der Nationalstaaten und der EU bestimmt. Die Autoren und Autorinnen des Bandes richten ihren Blick auf die Anfänge einer modernen Minderheitenpolitik seit der Weimarer Republik, in welcher der Begriff der nationalen Minderheiten zuerst zu einem Gegenstand rechtlicher wie politischer Debatten und zu einer gesellschaftlichen "Kategorie der Moderne" wurde. Die Gründung des Völkerbundes, die Legitimierung des Selbstbestimmungsrechts der Völker und die Etablierung des Minderheitenschutzes auf internationaler Ebene bildeten den Ausgangspunkt für diese Entwicklungen. Zeitgenössische volkskundliche Untersuchungen trugen neben vielen anderen Wissenschaften maßgeblich zur Kodifizierung des Konzeptes Minderheiten sowie zur Fremd- und Selbstethnisierung bei.

    Abstract: It is difficult to speak about Europe today without reference to its constitutive regions-supra-national geographical designations such as "Scandinavia," "Eastern Europe," and "the Balkans."     Abstract: 〈I〉Slavery Hinterland〈/I〉 explores a neglected aspect of transatlantic slavery: the implication of a continental European hinterland. It focuses on historical actors in territories that were not directly involved in the traffic in Africans but linked in various ways with the transatlantic slave business, the plantation economies that it fed and the consequences of its abolition. The volume unearths material entanglements of the Continental and Atlantic economies and also proposes a new agenda for the historical study of the relationship between business and morality. Contributors from the US,Britain and continental Europe examine the ways in which the slave economy touched on individual lives and economic developments in German-speaking Europe, Switzerland, Denmark and Italy. They reveal how these 'hinterlands' served as suppliers of investment, labour and trade goods for the slave trade and of materials for the plantation economies, and how involvement in trade networks contributed in turn to key economic developments in the 'hinterlands'. The chapters range in time from the first, short-lived attempt at establishing a German slave-trading operation in the 1680s to the involvement of textile manufacturers in transatlantic trade in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. A key theme of the volume is the question of conscience, or awareness of being morally implicated in an immoral enterprise. Evidence for subjective understandings of the moral challenge of slavery is found in individual actions and statements and also in post-abolition colonisation and missionary projects.
