    Abstract: This book revises standard assumptions among historians of Nazi Germany that physical violence against Jews slowly accelerated from 1933 onwards, with a first high point in November 1938 ("Kristallnacht"), and then further escalating to deportations and the mass murder of the Holocaust. Based on documentary evidence from about twenty German archives, the present work shows that there were many hundreds, possibly thousands, of violent attacks on Jews in Germany ranging from brutal assaults, abductions, and expulsions to murder. The work examines in detail the reaction of those German institutions and elites that were still in a position to react and protest in the spring of 1933. It makes two essentially new contributions to the literature on the history of the Third Reich: (1) a detailed examination of the antisemitic violence-from boycotts, violent attacks, robbery, extortion, abductions, and humiliating "pillory marches" to grievous bodily harm and murder-which has hitherto not been adequately recognized; (2) an analysis of the reactions of those institutions that still had the capacity to protest against Nazi attacks and legislative measures-the Protestant Church, the Catholic Church, the bureaucracies, and Hitler's conservative coalition partner, the DNVP-and the mindset of the elites who led them, to determine their various responses to flagrant antisemitic abuses. Individual protests against violent attacks, the April boycott, and Nazi legislative measures were already hazardous in March and April 1933, but established institutions in the German State and society were still able to voice their concerns and raise objections. By doing so, they might have stopped or at least postponed a radicalization that eventually led to the pogrom of 1938 and the Holocaust.

    Abstract: In this book, David Patterson offers original insights into the dynamics that underlie the phenomenon of endemic antisemitism, arguing that in all its manifestations, antisemitism is fundamentally anti-Judaism.     Abstract: A History of Anti-Semitism examines the history, culture and literature of antisemitism from antiquity to the present.     Abstract: Jonathan Fox and Lev Topor provide a new and innovative approach to answering the age-old question of why people discriminate against Jews. They examine anti-Jewish discrimination using a two-pronged approach. First, they combine and integrate ideas and theories from classic studies of anti-Semitism with social science theories on the causes of discrimination. Second, they use previously unavailable data on discrimination against Jews in 76 countries with significant Jewish minority populations to analyse the patterns and causes of discrimination.

    Abstract: Für den deutschen Kontext ist bislang weitgehend unerforscht, wie sich antisemitische Einstellungen bei Kindern bilden. Aber bereits bei den Sechs- bis Zwölfjährigen prägen sich spätere jugendliche Erscheinungsformen von antisemitischen Einstellungen. Hierbei kommt der religiösen Bildung im Grundschulkontext eine besondere Bedeutung zu, denn das Thema ›Judentum‹ ist für die höheren Grundschulklassen fest in den Lehrplänen verankert und dies führt für viele Schüler*innen zu einer Erstbegegnung mit jüdischer Geschichte, Theologie, Tradition und Kultur – eventuell auch zu einer ersten dialogischen Begegnung mit Menschen jüdischen Glaubens oder dem Besuch einer Synagoge. Dieser Band ist ein evidenter Schritt zu einer friedenspädagogisch motivierten Reform für den Religionsunterricht in der Grundschule: Stärker als bisher gesehen und umgesetzt, steht der Unterricht vor der gesamtgesellschaftlich bedeutsamen Herausforderung antisemitische Präventionsarbeit zu leisten! Even though it is still largely unexplored in the German context whether and how anti-semitic attitudes develop in children, it must be assumed that the roots for later forms of these prejudices in schoolyards and in classrooms are already growing among the six-to-twelve-year-olds. In this context, religious education is of particular importance in the context of primary schools, because the topic of Jewism is firmly anchored in the curricula for the higher elementary school classes and this may lead for many students to a first encounter with Jewish history, theology, tradition and culture – possibly also to a first dialogical encounter with people of Jewish faith or a visit to a synagogue. In this respect, this volume is a step towards a peace education-motivated reform for religious education in primary school: religious education is facing the challenge of doing anti-Semitic prevention work that is of major importance for society as a whole, and is stronger than previously seen and implemented!

Werner Bergmann zeichnet die spezifischen sozialen, politischen und ideologischen Erscheinungsformen des Antisemitismus in jeder Epoche nach und setzt diese in eine Beziehung zu den langfristigen antijüdischen Traditionslinien.

    Abstract: Anhand der internen und öffentlichen Kommunikation deutsch-jüdischer Vereine untersucht Anna Ullrich, wie gesellschaftlicher Antisemitismus in diesen Organisationen wahrgenommen, bewertet und bewältigt wurde. Erstmals werden dabei die Verhaltens- und Gefühlsempfehlungen, welche die Vereine ihren Mitgliedern anboten, systematisch herausgearbeitet und deren langfristige Entwicklung zwischen Erstem Weltkrieg und den ersten Jahren des Nationalsozialismus in die Analyse miteinbezogen. Aus der Vielzahl an Ratschlägen, Hinweisen, Warnungen, Empfehlungen und Aufforderungen werden die vielfältigen Diskussionen rekonstruiert, die immer wieder um die Frage nach einem adäquaten Umgang mit antisemitischen Erfahrungen in Deutschland kreisten. So ermöglicht die Studie eine differenzierte Betrachtung der vereinsinternen Aushandlungsprozesse und gibt neue Einblicke in das Verhältnis von jüdischen und nichtjüdischen Deutschen im Untersuchungszeitraum.

    Abstract: In den vergangenen Jahren vollzog sich eine deutlich beobachtbare Radikalisierung des Antisemitismus in Europa, die mit den islamistisch motivierten Terroranschlägen von Paris, Toulouse, Brüssel und Kopenhagen auch mörderische Konsequenzen hatte. Als Indikator für eine neue Qualität und Virulenz des Antisemitismus kann jedoch nicht nur der islamistische Antisemitismus gesehen werden, sondern auch die Zunahme von Antisemitismus in politisch und sozial arrivierten Kreisen und Milieus. Zugleich ist die Hemmschwelle für die Äußerung und Akzeptanz antisemitischer Ressentiments gesunken, sofern diese als „Israelkritik“ camoufliert sind. Parallel zu diesen Entwicklungen stellte der Antisemitismus sein Mobilisierungspotential für den politischen Protest auf der Straße unter Beweis, etwa im Rahmen der Mahnwachen für den Frieden und während des Gaza-Krieges 2014. Die Beiträge des Sammelbandes untersuchen Aspekte dieser Entwicklungen und befassen sich schwerpunktmäßig mit Antisemitismus in der öffentlichen Kommunikation, islamischen Antisemitismus und Antisemitismus in politischen Bewegungen.     Abstract: Widespread anti-Jewish pogroms accompanied the rebirth of Polish statehood out of World War I and Polish-Soviet War. William W. Hagen offers the pogroms' first scholarly account, revealing how they served as brutal stagings by ordinary people of scenarios dramatizing popular anti-Jewish fears and resentments. While scholarship on modern anti-Semitism has stressed its ideological inspiration ('print anti-Semitism'), this study shows that anti-Jewish violence by perpetrators among civilians and soldiers expressed magic-infused anxieties and longings for redemption from present threats and suffering ('folk anti-Semitism'). Illustrated with contemporary photographs and constructed from extensive, newly discovered archival sources from three continents, this is an innovative work in east European history. Using extensive first-person testimonies, it reveals gaps - but also correspondences - between popular attitudes and those of the political elite. The pogroms raged against the conscious will of new Poland's governors whilst Christians high and low sometimes sought, even successfully, to block them

    Abstract: In The Invention of Race in the European Middle Ages, Geraldine Heng questions the common assumption that the concepts of race and racisms only began in the modern era. Examining Europe's encounters with Jews, Muslims, Africans, Native Americans, Mongols, and the Romani ('Gypsies'), from the 12th through 15th centuries, she shows how racial thinking, racial law, racial practices, and racial phenomena existed in medieval Europe before a recognizable vocabulary of race emerged in the West. Analysing sources in a variety of media, including stories, maps, statuary, illustrations, architectural features, history, saints' lives, religious commentary, laws, political and social institutions, and literature, she argues that religion - so much in play again today - enabled the positing of fundamental differences among humans that created strategic essentialisms to mark off human groups and populations for racialized treatment. Her ground-breaking study also shows how race figured in the emergence of homo europaeus and the identity of Western Europe in this time.

    Abstract: The 'racial state' has become a familiar shorthand for the Third Reich, encapsulating its raison d'être, ambitions, and the underlying logic of its genocidal violence. The Nazi racial state's agenda is generally understood as a fundamental reshaping of society based on a new hierarchy of racial value.     Abstract: The question of how to conceptualize the role of technological innovations is of crucial importance for understanding the mechanisms and rhythms of long-term cultural change in prehistoric and early historic societies. The changes that have come about have often been modelled as gradual and linear, innovations have been considered positively as a progress in the development of humankind and the focus has been on the localisation of the origin of innovations and the routes of their spread. Appropriating Innovations goes beyond the current discussion by shedding light on condition that may facilitate the rapid spread of technological innovation and on processes involved in the integration of new technologies into the life world of the appropriating societies. In particular, papers concentrate on two key innovations, namely the transmission of the various components of the so-called "Secondary Products Revolution" in parts of the Near East and Europe during the 4th millennium BCE and the appropriation of early bronze casting technology, which spread from the Near East to Europe and China in the late 3rd and early 2nd millennium BCE.0Of particular interest is non-technological knowledge that is transmitted together with the technological, the latter being always deeply interconnected with the communication of social practices, ideas and myths. The acceptance of new technologies, therefore, requires the willingness to change existing world views and modify them due to the potentials and problems which are connected with the new technology. Contributions, therefore, concentrate on the conditions facilitating or hindering the spread of innovations and the transformative power of these innovations in the appropriating society

    Abstract: This is the first book to examine the relationship between European antisemitism and Islamophobia from the Crusades until the twenty-first century in the principal flashpoints of the two racisms. With case studies ranging from the Balkans to the UK, the contributors take the debate away from politicised polemics about whether or not Muslims are the new Jews. Much previous scholarship and public discussion has focused on comparing European ideas about Jews and Judaism in the past with contemporary attitudes towards Muslims and Islam. This volume rejects this approach. Instead, it interrogates how the dynamic relationship between antisemitism and Islamophobia has evolved over time and space. The result is the uncovering of a previously unknown story in which European ideas about Jews and Muslims were indeed connected, but were also ripped apart. Religion, empire, nation-building, and war, all played their part in the complex evolution of this relationship. As well as a study of prejudice, this book also opens up a new area of inquiry: how Muslims, Jews, and others have responded to these historically connected racisms. The volume brings together leading scholars in the emerging field of antisemitism-Islamophobia studies who work in a diverse range of disciplines: anthropology, history, sociology, critical theory, and literature. Together, they help us to understand a Europe in which Jews and Arabs were once called Semites, and today are widely thought to be on two different sides of the War on Terror. ‘This is an important intervention in a contentious subject area. The collection, uniquely, opens up the study of antisemitism and Islamophobia across time and space.     Abstract: Eine wissenssoziologische Rekonstruktion der Entwicklung der Semantik des modernen Antisemitismus im 19. Jahrhundert in ihrer Relation zu einem kollektiven Selbstbild. Soziologische und historische Untersuchungen zum Antisemitismus konzentrieren sich in der Regel auf das antisemitische Feindbild. Antisemitische Feindbilder aber stehen nicht alleine. Sie sind auf kollektive Selbstbilder bezogen. Die Historische Wissenssoziologie des modernen Antisemitismus arbeitet den innovativen Ansatz, den Antisemitismus in seiner Relation zu einem kollektiven Selbstbild zu analysieren, historisch aus: Sie rekonstruiert die Entwicklung des Antisemitismus vom ausgehenden 18. bis zum späten 19. Jahrhundert als Prozess seiner Nationalisierung. Triebkräfte dieses Prozesses auf der Ebene des Wissens sind Veränderungen in der sozialen Organisation der modernen Gesellschaft. Die Untersuchung hat erhebliche Konsequenzen für Differenzierungen, die sich in der Antisemitismusforschung durchgesetzt haben, und damit für das Verständnis der Geschichte und Entwicklung des modernen Antisemitismus. So wird etwa die etablierte Unterscheidung zwischen »religiösem«, »kulturellem« und »rassistischem« Antisemitismus begrifflich neu gefasst: Es handelt sich um Variationen eines in seiner Grundstruktur nationalen Antisemitismus. Jan Weyand, geb. 1966, ist wissenschaftlicher Oberassistent am Institut für Soziologie der Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Wissenssoziologie, Antisemitismusforschung sowie Kultursoziologie. Er wurde 2014 mit dem Habilitationspreis der Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg ausgezeichnet.

    Abstract: (Black) Metal rezipiert eine Bricolage aus Satanismus, (nord-)germanischen Mythen, völkischer Weltanschauung und Nietzsches Philosophie des „Übermenschen“. Dabei lassen sich im Umgang mit dem altnordischen Mythos unterschiedliche Muster erkennen. Der (scheinbar) intentionslosen, ›trivialen‹ Inszenierung als ›Wikinger‹ samt der Verwendung von cultural icons (›Karnevalisierung‹) stehen ambitioniertere, um Authentizität bemühte Projekte als eine (völkisch-antisemitisch aufgeladene) Neuromantik gegenüber, deren Inhalte viele Momente des völkischen Antisemitismus aufweisen.In allen Spielarten hat der Rückgriff auf die ›eigene‹ Geschichte und vermeintlich unverfremdete Kultur eine identitätsbildende Kraft, die über die Identifikation mit der ›germanischen Kultur‹ ein positives Selbstbild entwirft und als ultimatives Feindbild „das Jüdische“ impliziert. Dieser Dialogizität von Antisemitismus als „negativer Leitidee“ und ›Germantentum‹-Konstruktionen gehen die Beiträge dieses Bandes nach.

    Abstract: This title examines the ritual murder accusation (or blood libel), one of the most heinous charges against the Jews in the history of medieval antisemitism. It traces the origins to the circumstances surrounding the death of William of Norwich in 1144 and the text of the 'Life and Passion' composed by the monk Thomas of Monmouth in 1150, in the period immediately following the English civil war, the Anarchy under King Stephen, and the Second Crusade. The charge arose as the result of a trial of an indebted knight, Simon de Novers, for killing his Jewish banker Deulesalt.

    Abstract: This work explores a neglected aspect of the forced migration of African labourers to the Americas. Hundreds of thousands of captive Africans continued their journeys after the Middle Passage across the Atlantic. Colonial merchants purchased and then trans-shipped many of these captives to other colonies for resale. Drawing on a database of more than 7,000 intercolonial slave trading voyages compiled from port records, newspapers, and merchant accounts, the book identifies and quantifies the major routes of this intercolonial slave trade

    Abstract: Die staatlichen Finanzbehörden waren maßgebliche Akteure bei der Planung, Legitimation und Umsetzung der wirtschaftlichen Ausplünderung der deutschen Juden. Wie kam es dazu, dass ein so großer und weit verzweigter bürokratischer Apparat wie die Finanzverwaltung mit zehntausenden von Mitarbeitern weitgehend reibungslos im Sinne der NS-Politik funktionierte und sich bereitwillig an den Staatsverbrechen des "Dritten Reiches" beteiligte? Um diese Kernfrage zu klären, geht Christiane Kuller in ihrer Pionierstudie den politischen Entscheidungen, der institutionellen Organisation und der praktischen Durchführung der fiskalischen Verfolgung nach und verknüpft diese Ebenen erstmals. Ihre Analyse der Normen und institutionellen Routinen wie auch situativer und personaler Faktoren verdeutlicht die erschreckende Rolle des Reichsfinanzministeriums und seiner Verwaltung bei der Ordnung des Terrors. Eingebettet in eine längere zeitliche Perspektive, die bereits im späten 19. Jahrhundert einsetzt und bis in die Nachkriegszeit reicht, erschließen sich somit Grundfragen der Analyse nationalsozialistischer Staatsverbrechen. Christiane Kuller erhielt für ihre Arbeit den Habilitationsförderpreis der Universität München 2011 und den Ernst-Fraenkel-Prize der Wiener Library / London 2012. TEXT ZUR RIEIHE Das Reichsministerium der Finanzen finanzierte Repression, Aufrüstung und Kriegführung des nationalsozialistischen Staates. Es setzte über den Rahmen herkömmlicher Einnahmen hinaus im Reich wie in den besetzten Gebieten zunehmend auf Konfiskation. Struktur, Handeln und politisches Gewicht der Finanzverwaltung als Teil des verbrecherischen Regimes untersucht eine internationale zusammengesetzte Historikerkommission im Auftrag des Bundesfinanzministeriums.     Abstract: Stephen H. Norwood has written the first systematic study of the American far left's role in both propagating and combating antisemitism. This book covers Communists from 1920 onward, Trotskyists, the New Left and its black nationalist allies, and the contemporary remnants of the New Left. Professor Norwood analyzes the deficiencies of the American far left's explanations of Nazism and the Holocaust. He explores far left approaches to militant Islam, from condemnation of its fierce antisemitism in the 1930s to recent apologies for jihad. Norwood discusses the far left's use of long-standing theological and economic antisemitic stereotypes that the far right also embraced. The study analyzes the far left's antipathy to Jewish culture, as well as its occasional efforts to promote it. He considers how early Marxist and Bolshevik paradigms continued to shape American far left views of Jewish identity, Zionism, Israel, and antisemitism.

    Abstract: Das Rechercheprojekt "Antisemitismus in der DDR" hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, eine Debatte über Antisemitismus in der DDR anzustoßen. Im Gegensatz zum Mythos vom Antifaschismus in der DDR gab es auch Antisemitismus von staatlicher Seite. In acht ostdeutschen Städten recherchierten deshalb Jugendliche mit der Unterstützung von Fachkräften zu diesem Thema. Die Ergebnisse werden im Rahmen einer Wanderausstellung präsentiert. Längerfristig soll die Zivilgesellschaft dazu ermutigt werden, weitere Rechercheprojekte zum Thema im lokalen Raum zu.
    Abstract: „Das hat’s bei uns doch nicht gegeben!“ ist als Antwort nicht unwahrscheinlich, wenn man Bürger*innen der neuen Bundesländer zu Rassismus und Antisemitismus in der DDR befragt. Schließlich war die DDR ein „antifaschistischer Staat“ und damit per Definition von Rassismus und Antisemitismus befreit. Was es nicht geben durfte, gab es nicht. Dass die Realität eine andere war belegen zahlreiche Vorfälle, die sich gegen Jüdinnen:Juden und als nicht „deutsch“ gelesene Personen und Institutionen richteten. Auch Gastarbeiter*innen waren in der DDR regelmäßig von rassistisch motivierten Gewalttaten sowie struktureller Ausgrenzung betroffen. Deshalb hat sich schon 2006 das Rechercheprojekt „Antisemitismus in der DDR“, bestehend aus 76 Schüler*innen mit Unterstützung von Wissenschaftler*innen und Fachexpert*innen, zum Ziel gesetzt, diesem Thema nachzugehen und eine Debatte über Antisemitismus in der DDR anzustoßen. In acht ostdeutschen Städten recherchierten Jugendliche mit der Unterstützung von Fachkräften zu diesem Thema. Die Ergebnisse werden im Rahmen einer Wanderausstellung präsentiert. Sie gingen in Archive, Bibliotheken, befragten Zeitzeug*innen und suchten nach Objekten und Belegen, die deren Geschichten illustrieren sollten. Im ersten Teil des Buches finden sich Texte zur Recherche, Konzeption und Rezeption der Ausstellung. Der zweite Teil des Buches umfasst weiterführende Texte, so etwa zur Thematisierung von Antisemitismus in der antifaschistischen Literatur und im Film der DDR sowie zu der Frage, wie Anne Frank in der DDR besprochen und thematisiert wurde. Der dritte und letzte Teil des Bandes beinhaltet den Katalog der Ausstellung. Er ist unterteilt in die Unterkapitel, in die auch die Ausstellung unterteilt ist, inklusive der verwendeten Bilder und Texte sowie eine Chronik mit einer Auswahl an antisemitischen Straf- und Gewalttaten.

    Abstract: In a bold rethinking of the Hollywood blacklist and McCarthyite America, Joseph Litvak reveals a political regime that did not end with the 1950s or even with the Cold War: a regime of compulsory sycophancy, in which the good citizen is an informer, ready to denounce anyone who will not play the part of the earnest, patriotic American. While many scholars have noted the anti-Semitism underlying the House Un-American Activities Committee's (HUAC's) anti-Communism, Litvak draws on the work of Theodor W. Adorno, Hannah Arendt, Alain Badiou, and Max Horkheimer to show how the committee conflated Jewishness with what he calls "comic cosmopolitanism," an intolerably seductive happiness, centered in Hollywood and New York, in show business and intellectual circles. He maintains that HUAC took the comic irreverence of the "uncooperative" witnesses as a crime against an American identity based on self-repudiation and the willingness to "name names"

    Abstract: Inventing the Jew follows the evolution of stereotypes of Jews from the level of traditional Romanian and other Central-East European cultures (their legends, fairy tales, ballads, carols, anecdotes, superstitions, and iconographic representations) to that of "high" cultures (including literature, essays, journalism, and sociopolitical writings), showing how motifs specific to "folkloric antisemitism" migrated to "intellectual antisemitism." This comparative perspective also highlights how the images of Jews have differed from that of other "strangers" such as Hungarians, Germans, Roma, Turks, Armenians, and Greeks. The gap between the conception of the "imaginary Jew" and the "real Jew" is a cultural distance that differs over time and place, here seen through the lens of cultural anthropology.

    Abstract: Die Publikation geht auf die internationale Tagung „Die kulturelle Seite des Antisemitismus zwischen Aufklärung und Shoah“ am Ludwig-Uhland-Institut in Tübingen zurück, die im Oktober 2004 in Kooperation mit dem Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism an der Hebrew University in Jerusalem (SICSA) veranstaltet wurde. Die deutschen und englischsprachigen Beiträge untersuchen exemplarisch Aspekte der kulturellen Seite des Antisemitismus zwischen dem späten 18. und dem 20. Jahrhundert in Zentraleuropa. Thematisiert werden nicht nur kultur- und geistesgeschichtliche Grundlagen des modernen Antisemitismus, die Tradition und Wirkungsmacht antijüdischer Bilder, Stereotype und Codes, sondern auch alltägliche und diskursive Formen der Judenfeindschaft und Reaktionen von jüdischer Seite auf den Antisemitismus. Als internationaler und interdisziplinärer Forschungsaustausch können die Tübinger kulturwissenschaftlichen Gespräche zu weiteren Diskussionen anregen.
