    Abstract: When Nigeria hosted the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC) in 1977, it celebrated a global vision of black nationhood and citizenship animated by the exuberance of its recent oil boom. Andrew Apter's The Pan-African Nation tells the full story of this cultural extravaganza, from Nigeria's spectacular rebirth as a rapidly developing petro-state to its dramatic demise when the boom went bust. According to Apter, FESTAC expanded the horizons of blackness in Nigeria to mirror the global circuits of its economy. By showcasing masks, dances, images, and souvenirs from its many diverse ethnic groups, Nigeria forged a new national culture. In the grandeur of this oil-fed confidence, the nation subsumed all black and African cultures within its empire of cultural signs and erased its colonial legacies from collective memory. As the oil economy collapsed, however, cultural signs became unstable, contributing to rampant violence and dissimulation. The Pan-African Nation unpacks FESTAC as a historically situated mirror of production in Nigeria. More broadly, it points towards a critique of the political economy of the sign in postcolonial Africa.

    Abstract: Main description: Die Globalisierung, wie sie sich im Zuge der Epochenwende von 1989/90, der weltweiten Öffnung der Märkte, der neuen Kommunikationstechnologien und einer beschleunigten Mobilität herausgebildet hat, steht im Begriff, die Welt tiefreichend zu verändern. Soziale, wirtschaftliche, staatliche und kulturelle Identitäten und Vertrautheiten werden zunehmend in Frage gestellt.Von diesen Befunden gehen die in diesem Band publizierten Beiträge aus. Dabei stellen sich Fragen in zwei Richtungen: Wird die Globalisierung dazu führen, daß die Unterschiede und Besonderheiten zwischen den Nationen und Völkern immer mehr verschwinden? Welche kulturellen Kompetenzen sind erforderlich, um die Globalisierung im Sinne eines sozial verträglichen, wirtschaftlich erfolgreichen und damit möglichst gerechten Ausgleichs zu gestalten? Eine dritte durchgängige Perspektive des Bandes ist darin zu sehen, daß hier auch die religiösen, insbesondere christlichen Implikationen der Globalisierung eine ihnen zustehende Beachtung finden.Die Beiträge gehen auf das 8.     Abstract: Durch die Internationalisierung von Unternehmen und die steigende Zahl von Mitarbeiterentsendungen ins Ausland gewinnt interkulturelles Management zunehmend an Bedeutung. Obwohl sich Deutschland und Frankreich aufgrund ihrer gemeinsamen historischen Basis und der wirtschaftlichen Größe sehr nahe stehen, gibt es tief greifende Unterschiede zwischen beiden Kulturen. Da sie das Verhalten der Menschen prägen und so Kooperationen beeinträchtigen können, müssen sie identifiziert werden, um gegensteuern zu können. Anhand von Erfahrungsberichten deutscher Manager, die mehrere Jahre in Frankreich gelebt und gearbeitet haben, ermittelt Judith Jahn abweichende Kulturstandards in Frankreich aus deutscher Sicht, die bei der Ausführung von Managementaufgaben von Bedeutung sind. Ziel ist, Mitarbeitern, die nach Frankreich entsandt werden, Erklärungen für das Vorkommen bestimmter Kulturstandards zu geben, so dass sie sowohl die fremdkulturellen als auch ihre eigenen Verhaltens- und Arbeitsweisen besser verstehen und auf bestimmte Situationen adäquat reagieren können.

    Abstract: Trotz der grundsätzlichen Kulturhoheit der Länder fällt in Deutschland die Zuständigkeit für Kultur weitgehend in den Aufgabenbereich der Kommunen. Obwohl der kulturelle und kulturpolitische Standpunkt der leitenden Mitarbeiter kommunaler Kulturverwaltungen ihre Entscheidungen stark beeinflusst, war er bislang kaum Gegenstand von Untersuchungen. Auf der Basis einer deutschlandweit durchgeführten quantitativen Fragebogenerhebung und qualitativer Leitfadeninterviews in Baden-Württemberg, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Sachsen und Thüringen untersucht Patrick Glogner die Einstellungen leitender Mitarbeiter kommunaler Kulturverwaltungen zu Kulturbegriffen, Kulturkonsumenten, kulturpolitischen Konzepten und zum Kulturmanagement. Kultursoziologisch und kulturpolitisch bemerkenswert ist, dass deutliche Unterschiede in den kulturellen Einstellungen bestehen. Hierzu gehören beispielsweise Differenzen im Selbstverständnis als kulturpolitische Akteure, in den Kriterien der Kulturförderung und in der Relevanz von Konzepten wie der Neuen Kulturpolitik oder der Kulturpflege. Die jeweilige Haltung korrespondiert sowohl mit der Jahrgangszugehörigkeit und der regionalen Herkunft als auch mit der Ausbildungs- und Studiensozialisation

So begins the first chapter of Cultures Merging, in which Eric Jones--one of the world's leading economic historians--takes an eloquent, pointed, and personal look at the question of whether culture determines economics or is instead determined by it. Bringing immense learning and originality to the issue of cultural change over the long-term course of global economic history, Jones questions cultural explanations of much social behavior in Europe, East Asia, the United States, Australia, and the Middle East.
