    Kurzfassung: More than two decades of deconstruction, renovation, and reconstruction have left the urban environments in the former German Democratic Republic completely transformed. This volume considers the changing urban landscapes in the former East - and how the filling of previous absences and the absence of previous presence - creates the cultural landscape of modern unified Germany. This broadens our understanding of this transformation by examining often-neglected cities, spaces, or structures, and historical narration and preservation.

    Kurzfassung: Die vorliegende Fokusstudie befasst sich mit unbegleiteten Minderjährigen in Deutschland. Minderjährige Drittstaatsangehörige, die ohne Begleitung ihrer Eltern nach Deutschland einreisen und sich hier aufhalten, stellen eine besonders schutzbedürftige Gruppe dar, unabhängig davon, ob ein Schutzgesuch gestellt wird. Sie reisen in der Regel illegal nach Deutschland ein und werden bei einem Aufgriff durch das Jugendamt in Obhut genommen, falls keine Zurückschiebung an der Grenze erfolgt. Sie sind in Bezug auf das gesamte Migrationsgeschehen zwar nur eine kleine Gruppe unter den Drittstaatsangehörigen; ihre Zahl steigt jedoch seit Jahren kontinuierlich an. Während 2008 lediglich 763 unbegleitete Minderjährige einen Asylantrag stellten, suchten 2013 bereits 2.486 unbegleitete Minderjährige Schutz in Deutschland. Die meisten von ihnen kamen aus Afghanistan (690), Somalia (355), Syrien (285), Eritrea (140) und Ägypten (120). Auch bei der Schutzquote ist ein Anstieg zu verzeichnen: Diese lag 2010 bei 36,3 %; dagegen entschied das Bundesamt 2013 bei 56,6 % der unbegleiteten minderjährigen Asylsuchenden auf Flüchtlingsschutz, Asyl, subsidiären Schutz oder Abschiebungsverbote.

    Kurzfassung: In der vorliegenden Fokusstudie werden die administrativen und organisatorischen Rahmenbedingungen der Abschiebungs-, Zurückschiebungs- und Zurückweisungshaft, die Bedingungen in Abschiebungshafteinrichtungen sowie die möglichen alternativen Zwangsmaßnahmen zur Durchsetzung einer Abschiebung, Zurückschiebung oder Zurückweisung dargestellt. Aus der föderalen Struktur Deutschlands sowie der zunehmenden EU-Integration heraus ergibt sich eine komplexe rechtliche und behördliche Organisationsstruktur bei Fragen der Inhaftierung von Drittstaatsangehörigen.Einige Länder haben die Vorgaben im Aufenthaltsgesetz sowie den Allgemeinen Verwaltungsvorschriften zum Aufenthaltsgesetz durch Ländererlasse und -gesetze ergänzt und spezifiziert. Generell ist das Verhältnismäßigkeitsprinzip zu wahren, und die Inhaftnahme darf nur als letztes Mittel Anwendung finden, wenn keine milderen, ebenfalls ausreichenden Mittel zur Sicherung der Abschiebung zur Verfügung stehen. Im Jahr 2013 befanden sich über das gesamte Jahr verteilt mehr als 4.300 Personen in Abschiebungs-, Zurückschiebungs- und Zurückweisungshaft der Länder. Die Zahl ist seit 2008 insgesamt rückläufig.

    Kurzfassung: In der vorliegenden Studie werden die gesetzlichen Grundlagen sowie die Verfahrensweise bei (Wieder-)Einreisesperren für Drittstaatsangehörige beschrieben sowie der Umfang und die Struktur der an bundesdeutschen Grenzen festgestellten Personen mit (Wieder-)Einreisesperre dargestellt. Zudem werden die vorhandenen Rückübernahmeabkommen benannt und deren Umfang und Inanspruchnahme aufgezeigt. Die Durchsetzung der Ausreisepflicht sowie die in diesem Zusammenhang kraft Gesetzes entstehenden Wiedereinreisesperren obliegen den mit dem Vollzug des Ausländerrechts beauftragten Behörden. Im Jahr 2013 sind bei einer Anzahl von fast 500.000 mit einer Einreisesperre registrierten Personen vergleichsweise wenig Verstöße gegen Wiedereinreisesperren an den Grenzen festzustellen (Zurückweisung: 413 Personen; Zurückschiebung: 4.498). Auch der Anteil der gemeldeten Wiedereinreisen bei geförderten freiwilligen Rückkehrern über die Programme REAG/GARP ist mit 2,0 Prozent (2012) gering. Durch Rückübernahmeabkommen werden bestehende völkergewohnheitsrechtliche Verpflichtungen zur Rückübernahme eigener Staatsangehöriger konkretisiert. Derzeit gelten 13 Rückübernahmeabkommen, die Deutschland bilateral mit Drittstaaten abgeschlossen hat. Neben bilateralen Abkommen existieren solche Verträge auch auf gemeinschaftlicher Ebene. Mit 14 Staaten sind entsprechende EU-Rückübernahmeabkommen bereits in Kraft getreten.

    Kurzfassung: In 1908, Arthur Maurice Hocart and William Halse Rivers Rivers conducted fieldwork in the Solomon Islands and elsewhere in Island Melanesia that served as the turning point in the development of modern anthropology. The work of these two anthropological pioneers on the small island of Simbo brought about the development of participant observation as a methodological hallmark of social anthropology. This would have implications for Rivers’ later work in psychiatry and psychology, and Hocart’s work as a comparativist, for which both would largely be remembered despite the novelty of that independent fieldwork on remote Pacific islands in the early years of the 20th Century. Contributors to this volume—who have all carried out fieldwork in those Melanesian locations where Hocart and Rivers worked—give a critical examination of the research that took place in 1908, situating those efforts in the broadest possible contexts of colonial history, imperialism, the history of ideas and scholarly practice within and beyond anthropology.

    Kurzfassung: Recent debates have used the concept of "transnational history" to broaden research on historical subjects that transcend national boundaries and encourage a shift away from official inter-state interactions to institutions, groups, and actors that have been obscured. This approach proves particularly fruitful for the dynamic field of global gender and women's history. By looking at the restless lives and work of women's activists in informal border-crossings, ephemeral NGOs, the lower management of established international organizations, and other global networks, this volume reflects the potential of a new perspective that allows for a more adequate analysis of transnational activities. By pointing out cultural hierarchies, the vicissitudes of translation and re-interpretation, and the ambiguity of intercultural exchange, this volume demonstrates the critical potential of transnational history. It allows us to see the limits of universalist and cosmopolitan claims so dear to many historical actors and historians.

    Kurzfassung: Ideas about health are reinforced by institutions and their corresponding practices, such as donning a patient's gown in a hospital or prostrating before a healing shrine. Even though we are socialized into regarding such ideologies as "natural" and unproblematic, we sometimes seek to bypass, circumvent, or even transcend the dominant ideologies of our cultures as they are manifested in the institutions of health care. The contributors to this volume describe such contestations and circumventions of health ideologies, and the blurring of therapeutic boundaries, on the basis of case studies from India, the South Asian Diaspora, and Europe, focusing on relations between body, mind, and spirit in a variety of situations. The result is not always the "live and let live" medical pluralism that is described in the literature.

    Kurzfassung: How and to what extent do people take into account the intentions of others? Alessandro Duranti sets out to answer this question, showing that the role of intentions in human interaction is variable across cultures and contexts. Through careful analysis of data collected over three decades in US and Pacific societies, Duranti demonstrates that, in some communities, social actors avoid intentional discourse, focusing on the consequences of actions rather than on their alleged original goals. In other cases, he argues, people do speculate about their own intentions or guess the intentions of others, including in some societies where it was previously assumed they avoid doing so.     Kurzfassung: During the Haitian Revolution of 1791–1804, arguably the most radical revolution of the modern world, slaves and former slaves succeeded in ending slavery and establishing an independent state. Yet on the Spanish island of Cuba barely fifty miles distant, the events in Haiti helped usher in the antithesis of revolutionary emancipation. When Cuban planters and authorities saw the devastation of the neighboring colony, they rushed to fill the void left in the world market for sugar, to buttress the institutions of slavery and colonial rule, and to prevent 'another Haiti' from happening in their own territory. Freedom's Mirror follows the reverberations of the Haitian Revolution in Cuba, where the violent entrenchment of slavery occurred at the very moment that the Haitian Revolution provided a powerful and proximate example of slaves destroying slavery. By creatively linking two stories - the story of the Haitian Revolution and that of the rise of Cuban slave society - that are usually told separately, Ada Ferrer sheds fresh light on both of these crucial moments in Caribbean and Atlantic history

Focusing on the daily life of Widow Elizabeth Pratt, a shopkeeper from early eighteenth-century Newport, Rhode Island, Christina J. Hodge uses material remains as a means of reconstructing not only how Mrs Pratt lived, but also how these objects reflect shifting class and gender relationships in this period. Challenging the 'emulation thesis', a common assumption that wealthy elites led fashion and culture change while middling sorts only followed, Hodge shows how middling consumers were in fact discerning cultural leaders, adopting genteel material practices early and aggressively. By focusing on the rise and emergence of the middle class, this book brings new insights into the evolution of consumerism, class, and identity in colonial America

    Kurzfassung: After the fall of communism in 1989 Bulgaria experiences strong waves of emigration. According to recent estimations, about 2 million Bulgarians live abroad. Since 1989, migration flows often have changed their direction, intensity and patterns; however, their main characteristic remains their constancy. The articles in the present collection describe and analyze some of the largest Bulgarian communities abroad as well as other topics related to migration issues of ethnic minorities in Bulgaria or the multilingualism in the works of Bulgarian authors with migratory background.     Kurzfassung: During the late nineteenth century the city of Berlin developed such a reputation for lawlessness and sexual licentiousness that it came to be known as the "Whore of Babylon." Out of this reputation for debauchery grew an unusually rich discourse around prostitution. In Berlin Coquette, Jill Suzanne Smith shows how this discourse transcended the usual clichés about prostitutes and actually explored complex visions of alternative moralities or sexual countercultures including the "New Morality" articulated by feminist radicals, lesbian love, and the "New Woman." Combining extensive archival research with close readings of a broad spectrum of texts and images from the late Wilhelmine and Weimar periods, Smith recovers a surprising array of productive discussions about extramarital sexuality, women’s financial autonomy, and respectability. She highlights in particular the figure of the cocotte (Kokotte), a specific type of prostitute who capitalized on the illusion of respectable or upstanding womanhood and therefore confounded easy categorization. By exploring the semantic connections between the figure of the cocotte and the act of flirtation (of being coquette), Smith’s work presents flirtation as a type of social interaction through which both prostitutes and non-prostitutes in Imperial and Weimar Berlin could express extramarital sexual desire and agency.

    Kurzfassung: Scholars from various disciplines have long debated why western Europe in general, and England in particular, led the transition from feudalism to capitalism. The decline of serfdom between c.1300 and c.1500 in England is centralto this "Transition Debate", because it transformed the lives of ordinary people and opened up the markets in land and labour. Yet, despite its historical importance, there has been no major survey or reassessment of decline of serfdom for decades. Consequently, the debate over its causes, and its legacy to early modern England, remains unresolved. This dazzling study provides an accessible and up-to-date survey of the decline of serfdom in England, applying a new methodology for establishing both its chronology and causes to thousands of court rolls from 38 manors located across the south Midlands and East Anglia. It presents a ground-breaking reassessment, challenging many of the traditional interpretations of the economy and society of late-medieval England, and, indeed, of the very nature of serfdom itself. Mark Bailey is High Master of St Paul's School, and Professor of Later Medieval History at the University of East Anglia. He has published extensively on the economic and social history of England between c.1200 and c.1500, including Medieval Suffolk (2007)

    Kurzfassung: The Colonial Caribbean is an archaeological analysis of the Jamaican plantation system at the turn of the nineteenth century. Focused specifically on coffee plantation landscapes and framed by Marxist theory, the analysis considers plantation landscapes using a multiscalar approach to landscape archaeology. James A. Delle considers spatial phenomena ranging from the diachronic settlement pattern of the island as a whole to the organization of individual house and yard areas located within the villages of enslaved workers. Delle argues that a Marxist approach to landscape archaeology provides a powerful theoretical framework to understand how the built environment played a direct role in the negotiation of social relations in the colonial Caribbean

    Kurzfassung: The sectional conflict over slavery in the United States was not only a clash between labour systems and political ideologies but also a viscerally felt part of the lives of antebellum Americans. This book contributes to the growing field of emotions history by exploring how specific emotions shaped Americans' perceptions of, and responses to, the sectional conflict in order to explain why it culminated in disunion and war. Emotions from indignation to jealousy were inextricably embedded in antebellum understandings of morality, citizenship, and political affiliation. Their arousal in the context of political debates encouraged Northerners and Southerners alike to identify with antagonistic sectional communities and to view the conflicts between them as worth fighting over. Michael E. Woods synthesizes two schools of thought on Civil War causation: the fundamentalist, which foregrounds deep-rooted economic, cultural, and political conflict, and the revisionist, which stresses contingency, individual agency, and collective passion

The dissolution of Yugoslavia led to the largest war in Europe since 1945, massive human rights violations and over 100,000 victims. Debating the End of Yugoslavia is less an attempt to re-write the dissolution of Yugoslavia, or to provide a different narrative, than to take stock and reflect on the scholarship to date. New sources and data offer fresh avenues of research avoiding the passion of the moment that often characterized research published during the wars and provide contemporary perspectives on the dissolution. The book outlines the state of the debate rather than focusing on controversies alone and maps how different scholarly communities have reflected on the dissolution of the country, what arguments remain open in scholarly discourse and highlights new, innovative paths to study the period.

    Kurzfassung: Focusing on émigrés from Baden, Württemberg and Hungary in four host societies (Switzerland, the Ottoman Empire, England and the United States), Heléna Tóth considers exile in the aftermath of the revolutions of 1848–9 as a European phenomenon with global dimensions. While exile is often presented as an individual challenge, Tóth studies its collective aspects in the realms of the family and of professional and social networks. Exploring the interconnectedness of these areas, she argues that although we often like to sharply distinguish between labor migration and exile, these categories were anything but stable after the revolutions of 1848–9; migration belonged to the personal narrative of the revolution for a broad section of the population. Moreover, discussions about exile and amnesty played a central role in formulating the legacy of the revolutions not only for the émigrés but for their social environment and, ultimately, the governments of the restoration

    Kurzfassung: This book is about the creation and development of ethnic identity among the Kamba. Comprising approximately one-eighth of Kenya's population, the British considered the Kamba East Africa's premier 'martial race' by the mid-twentieth century: a people with an apparent aptitude for soldiering. The reputation, indeed, was one that Kamba leaders used to leverage financial rewards from the colonial state. However, beneath this simplistic exterior was a maelstrom of argument and debate. Men and women, young and old, Christians and non-Christians, and the elite and poor fought over the virtues they considered worthy of honor in their communities, and which of their visions should constitute 'Kamba' identity. Based on extensive archival research and more than 150 interviews, Ethnicity and Empire is one of the first books to analyze the complex process of building and shaping 'tribe' over more than two centuries. It reveals new ways to think about themes crucial to the history of colonialism: soldiering, 'loyalty', martial race, and indeed the nature of empire itself

Wale Adebanwi demonstrates how the corporate agency of the elite transformed the modern history and politics of one of Africa's largest ethnic groups, the Yorùbá. The argument is organized around the ideas and cultural representations of Ọbáfemi Awólowo, the central signifier of modern Yorùbá culture. Through the narration and analysis of material, non-material and interactional phenomena - such as political party and ethnic group organization, cultural politics, democratic struggle, personal ambitions, group solidarity, death, memory and commemoration - this book examines the foundations of the legitimacy of the Yorùbá political elite.
