    Abstract: Seit 2015 ist der Diskurs über die Flüchtlingspolitik sowie die Einstellungen gegenüber Flüchtlingen ein zentraler Fluchtpunkt der gesellschaftspolitischen Debatte. Von der »Willkommenskultur« bis zum Aufstieg der AFD lassen sich zahlreiche gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen über die Einstellungen gegenüber Flüchtlingen erklären. Felix Leßke zeigt, dass sich diese Einstellungsmuster nicht zufällig, sondern systematisch zwischen verschiedenen sozialen Gruppen verteilen. Sie lassen sich sozialräumlich verorten, so dass sie durch die sozialen Lagen und ihre Verhältnisse gegenüber den Flüchtlingen und anderen sozialen Akteursklassen erklärt werden können. Soziale Konfliktlinien werden dadurch sichtbar und nachvollziehbar, die sozialen Folgen von politischen Entscheidungen lassen sich besser abschätzen. Das Buch verbindet vor dem Hintergrund der Bourdieuschen Theorie eine innovative Theorie von Migration und Integration mit einer umfassenden empirischen Fundierung und trägt dazu bei, die Entwicklungen der vergangenen Jahre zu verstehen.

    Abstract: Was migration to Germany a blessing or a curse? The main argument of this book is that the Greek state conceived labor migration as a traineeship into Europeanization with its shiny varnish of progress. Jumping on a fully packed train to West Germany meant leaving the past behind. However, the tensed Cold War realities left no space for illusions; specters of the Nazi past and the Greek Civil War still haunted them all. Adopting a transnational approach, this monograph retargets attention to the sending state by exploring how the Greek Gastarbeiter’s welfare was intrinsically connected with their homeland through its exercise of long-distance nationalism. Apart from its fresh take in postwar migration, the book also addresses methodological challenges in creative ways. The narrative alternates between the macro- and the micro-level, including subnational and transnational actors and integrating a diverse set of primary sources and voices. Avoiding the trap of exceptionalism, it contextualizes the Greek case in the Mediterranean and Southeast European experience

    Abstract: Spätestens seit der Corona-Pandemie werden Verschwörungstheorien zunehmend als gesellschaftspolitisches Problem wahrgenommen und sind zum Politikum geworden. Wohl noch nie zuvor gab es im öffentlichen Diskurs eine derart hohe Sensibilität für das Thema. Ängste vor Verschwörungen einerseits und Ängste vor Verschwörungstheorien andererseits schaukeln sich offenbar gegenseitig hoch. Dies führt zu einer anwachsenden gesellschaftlichen Polarisierung und zu einem Klima von Misstrauen, Empörung und Gereiztheit. Zehn Jahre nach der Erstauflage des vorliegenden Bandes erscheint die Analyse des gegenwärtigen Verschwörungsdenkens dringender denn je. Im Rahmen von sechs neuen Beiträgen nimmt die erweiterte Neuauflage aktuelle Entwicklungen in den Blick.     Abstract: This history of the poor of Sub-Saharan Africa begins in the monasteries of thirteenth-century Ethiopia and ends in the South African resettlement sites of the 1980s. Its thesis, derived from histories of poverty in Europe, is that most very poor Africans have been individuals incapacitated for labour, bereft of support, and unable to fend for themselves in a land-rich economy. There has emerged the distinct poverty of those excluded from access to productive resources. Natural disaster brought widespread destitution, but as a cause of mass mortality it was almost eliminated in the colonial era, to return to those areas where drought has been compounded by administrative breakdown. Professor Iliffe investigates what it was like to be poor, how the poor sought to help themselves, how their counterparts in other continents live. The poor live as people, rather than merely parading as statistics. Famines have alerted the world to African poverty, but the problem itself is ancient. Its prevailing forms will not be understood until those of earlier periods are revealed and trends of change are identified. This is a book for all concerned with the future of Africa, as well as for students of poverty elsewhere.

Diese auf einer empirischen Untersuchung basierende Studie setzt dagegen die These, dass Leistung nicht unabhängig von der Anerkennung der im wissenschaftlichen Feld etablierten Akteure als funktionales, »objektives« Prinzip existiert, sondern innerhalb sozialer Prozesse individuell zugeschrieben und hergestellt wird. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird auch die Frage beleuchtet, wie es dazu kommt, dass wesentlich mehr männliche als weibliche Aspiranten die akademische Karriere fortsetzen. Der Blick richtet sich dabei weder auf »subjektive Laufbahnen« noch auf »objektive Strukturen«. Untersucht wird vielmehr die alltägliche Praxis des wissenschaftlichen Feldes, die sich im praktischen Sinn, der illusio der Akteure, widerspiegelt. Damit schließt die Studie an Pierre Bourdieus Untersuchungen des wissenschaftlichen Feldes an und ergänzt diese um neue Gesichtspunkte

    Abstract: One of the major driving forces behind the international Women´s University was the interest in changing the traditional university. In its pursuit of this goal, the projekt vifu (the Virtual International University) combined the overall focus on gender with a conceptual stress on virtuality as a potential inroad to transform and innovate the established academic system. This collection presents results and critical evaluations of the vifu as a feminist project designed in flavor of change. In addition to this, the volume presents and discusses projects which theoretically and practically integrate the new ICTs into their departure to new horizons in higher education and research and at the same practice a particular sensitivity towards gender as a social category. The authors of this anthology share the perspective on the category of gender and ICT-related developments summed up by "virtuality" as potential tools for transforming traditional academia. While change is not considered as a quality per se, each contribution makes its case for specific kinds of "making new". In doing so, they also seek answers to the questions of a democratic and socially responsible knowledge production and distribution in the 21 st century

    Abstract: Why is English national identity so enigmatic and so elusive? Why, unlike the Scots, Welsh, Irish and most of continental Europe, do the English find it so difficult to say who they are? The Making of English National Identity, first published in 2003, is a fascinating exploration of Englishness and what it means to be English. Drawing on historical, sociological and literary theory, Krishan Kumar examines the rise of English nationalism and issues of race and ethnicity from earliest times to the present day. He argues that the long history of the English as an imperial people has, as with other imperial people like the Russians and the Austrians, developed a sense of missionary nationalism which in the interests of unity and empire has necessitated the repression of ordinary expressions of nationalism. Professor Kumar's lively and provocative approach challenges readers to reconsider their pre-conceptions about national identity and who the English really are.

    Abstract: Studies of social movements and of political parties have usually treated them as separate and distinct. In fact they are deeply intertwined. Social movements often shape electoral competition and party policies; they can even give rise to new parties. At the same time, political parties and campaigns shape the opportunities, personnel, and outcomes of social movements. In many countries, electoral democracy itself is the outcome of social movement actions. This book, first published in 2003, examines the interaction of social movements and party politics since the 1950s, both in the United States and around the world. In studies of the US Civil Rights movement, the New Left, the Czechoslovak dissident movements, the Mexican struggle for democracy, and other episodes, this volume shows how party politics and social movements cannot be understood without appreciating their intimate relationship

    Abstract: The management of and communication about risks has become a major question of public policy and intellectual debate in the modern world. The social amplification of risk framework describes how both social and individual factors act to amplify or dampen perceptions of risk and through this create secondary effects such as stigmatisation of technologies, economic losses or regulatory impacts. This volume, edited by three of the world's leading analysts of risk and its communication, brings together contributions from a group of international experts working in the field of risk perception and risk communication. Key conceptual issues are discussed as well as a range of recent case studies (spanning BSE and food safety, AIDS/HIV, nuclear power, child protection, Y2K, electromagnetic fields, and waste incineration) that take forward the state-of-the-art in risk amplification theory.
