    Abstract: Vergessen, verdrängt, verschwiegen: Wer erinnert sich im heutigen Deutschland noch an jene Verbrechen, die das Kaiserreich in der Kolonie Ostafrika beging? Im dreijährigen Maji-Maji-Krieg, ab 1905 im heutigen Tansania ausgefochten, schlug die Kolonialmacht den Widerstand nieder und löschte im Kriegsgebiet etwa ein Drittel der Bevölkerung aus. In Kämpfen getötet, von den Kolonialtruppen ermordet oder der Strategie der 'verbrannten Erde' zum Opfer gefallen: Tansanische Historiker gehen von 250.000 bis 300.000 Toten aus. Anders als in Deutschland finden in Tansania regelmäßig Gedenkveranstaltungen statt, die Kämpfer gelten als Helden. Die Verbrechen als Völkermord zu brandmarken, ist in Deutschland noch immer umstritten. In Tansania dagegen ist strittig, welche Forderungen an die Bundesrepublik zu richten sind. Zu den Quellen des Bandes gehören Gespräche, die Aert van Riel mit Diplomaten, Wissenschaftlern und Aktivisten führte. Um die Ursachen für den unterschiedlichen Umgang mit der Kolonialgeschichte aufzuzeigen, nimmt der Band auch neokoloniale Abhängigkeiten in den Blick

    Abstract: Much of the Middle East and North Africa still appears to be in a transitional period set in motion by the 2011 Arab uprisings, and the political trajectory of the region remains difficult to grasp. In The Clash of Values, Mansoor Moaddel provides groundbreaking empirical data to demonstrate how the collision between Islamic fundamentalism and liberal nationalism explains the region's present and will determine its future. Analyzing data from over 60,000 face-to-face interviews of nationally representative samples of people in seven countries - Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and Turkey - Moaddel reveals the depth and breadth of the conflict of values. He develops measures of expressive individualism, gender equality, secularism, and religious fundamentalism and shows that the factors that strengthen liberal values also weaken fundamentalism. Moaddel highlights longitudinal data showing changes in orientations toward secular politics, Western-type government, religious tolerance, national identity, and to a limited extent gender equality, as well as a significant decline in support for political Islam, over the past decade. Focusing on these trends, he contends that the Arab Spring represents a new phase of collective action rooted in the spread of the belief in individual liberty.     Abstract: Ausgehend von einer Kritik der sozialen Wirklichkeit des Libanon entwickelt Nassif Nassar (geb. 1940) eine politische Philosophie, deren Relevanz über den arabischen Raum hinausgeht. Sein Konzept des Liberalismus mit Gemeinsinn fordert zum einen vom Einzelnen ein kritisch-offenes Vernunftdenken ein, das in Abgrenzung zur Absolutheit partikular-gemeinschaftlicher Wahrheitsansprüche bescheiden auftritt. Es soll seine Postulate aus Respekt vor und im alltäglichen Dialog mit den Überzeugungen anderer sowie im Abgleich mit gesamtgesellschaftlichen Interessen kontinuierlich kritisch hinterfragen. Zum anderen verteidigt dieser Liberalismus individuelle Rechte, deren Ursprung Nassar auf ein universelles Menschsein zurückführt. Aus diesen Prämissen folgt sowohl der Respekt individueller Freiheiten als auch ein staatlich-institutionell gestütztes solidarisches Handeln unter gleichgestellten Personen. Dieses Handeln ist zudem auf sieben intrinsische Werte und damit über Rechtsansprüche hinaus auf ein holistisches Gerechtigkeitsverständnis ausgerichtet. Grundlage einer in diesem Sinne liberal-gemeinsinnigen Gesellschaft ist ein schulischer Philosophieunterricht, in dem der Einzelne in Konversation mit der Philosophiegeschichte zum kritisch denkenden sowie über die Grenzen seiner partikularen Gemeinschaft hinaus solidarisch handelnden Staatsbürger ausgebildet wird. Dieses Buch ist das erste, das sich mit der Philosophie Nassif Nassars auseinandersetzt. Es zeigt, welch wichtige Rolle (selbst-)kritisches Denken in zeitgenössischen arabischen Diskursen spielt. Zudem illustriert es, wo die 'westliche Philosophie' in Nassars Ideenwelt Anschlussmöglichkeiten findet. Denn es scheint, dass in Zukunft auf bestimmte Probleme, die etwa globale Prozesse des sozialen Wandels oder der Verlust sozialer Kohäsionen mit sich bringen, überhaupt nur noch eine transkulturell ausgerichtete Philosophie plausible Antworten liefern kann.

    Abstract: "Within the history of African American struggle against racist oppression that often verges on dystopia, a hidden tradition has depicted a transfigured world. Daring to speculate on a future beyond white supremacy, black utopian artists and thinkers offer powerful visions of ways of being that are built on radical concepts of justice and freedom. They imagine a new black citizen who would inhabit a world that soars above all existing notions of the possible. In Black Utopia, Alex Zamalin offers a groundbreaking examination of African American visions of social transformation and their counterutopian counterparts. Considering figures associated with racial separatism, postracialism, anticolonialism, Pan-Africanism, and Afrofuturism, he argues that the black utopian tradition continues to challenge American political thought and culture. Black Utopia spans black nationalist visions of an ideal Africa, the fiction of W.E.B. Du Bois, and Sun Ra's cosmic mythology of alien abduction. Zamalin casts Samuel R. Delany and Octavia E.     Abstract: "Japan has experienced a radical shift in its self-perception. Before and during World War II, Japan's Bushido militarism led to its great colonial ventures in Asia and beyond. After the humiliating defeat and inscription of a peaceful constitution by the United States however, Japan embraced a peaceful and antimilitarist identity, which was based in its war-prohibiting Constitution and the foreign policy of the Yoshida doctrine. For most of the twentieth century, this 'merchant' identity was unusually stable. Japan refrained from any power policies outside of its borders, including United Nations peacekeeping missions, and focused on economic recovery and foreign trade. In the last three decades, however, Japan's self-perception along with its foreign policy seems to have changed. Gradually, Tokyo has conducted a number of foreign policy measures as well as internal symbolic gestures that would have been unthinkable a few decades ago and that symbolize a new and more confident Japan. Japanese politicians - including the Prime Minister Abe Shinzō - have adopted a new discourse depicting pacifism as a hindrance, rather than asset, to Japan's foreign policy. Japan is at a crossroads. But while political elites and a portion of the Japanese public call for re-articulation of Japan's peaceful national identity, there are still those who cherish the long-held idea of pacifism. Kolmaš connects the dots between national identity theory and Japanese revisionism in order to better understand and predict the direction of a changing Japan"--

    Abstract: This book examines how Asianism became a key concept in mainstream political discourse between China and Japan and how it was used both domestically and internationally in the contest for political hegemony. It argues that, from the early 1910s to the early 1930s, this contest changed Chinese and Japanese perceptions of?Asia?, from a concept that was foreign-referential, foreign-imposed, peripheral, and mostly negative and denied (in Japan) or largely ignored (in China) to one that was self-referential, self-defined, central, and widely affirmed and embraced. As an ism, Asianism elevated?Asia? as a geographical concept with culturalist-racialist implications to the status of a full-blown political principle and encouraged its proposal and discussion vis-à-vis other political doctrines of the time, such as nationalism, internationalism, and imperialism. By the mid-1920s, a great variety of conceptions of Asianism had emerged in the transnational discourse between Japan and China. Terminologically and conceptually, they not only paved the way for the appropriation of?Asia? discourse by Japanese imperialism from the early 1930s onwards but also facilitated the embrace of Sino-centric conceptions of Asianism by Chinese politicians and collaborators

    Abstract: “The Kuwaiti population includes around 100,000 people - approximately 10 per cent of the Kuwaiti nationals -whose legal status is contested. Often considered `stateless', they have come to be known in Kuwait as biduns, from `bidun jinsiyya', which means literally `without nationality' in Arabic. As long-term residents with close geographical ties and intimate cultural links to the emirate, the biduns claim that they are entitled to Kuwaiti nationality because they have no other. But since 1986 the State of Kuwait, has considered them `illegal residents' on Kuwaiti territory. As a result, the biduns have been denied civil and human rights and treated as undocumented migrants, with no access to employment, health, education or official birth and death certificates. It was only after the first-ever bidun protest in 2011, that the government softened restrictions imposed upon them. Claire Beaugrand argues here that, far from being an anomaly, the position of the biduns is of central importance to the understanding of state formation processes in the Gulf countries, and the ways in which identity and the boundaries of nationality are negotiated and concretely enacted.” (Publisher's description)

    Abstract: "This book argues that nationalist violence in developed countries is the product of unresponsive political elites and nationalists blocked from attracting supporters through legal channels. Political elites are prone to ignoring a regional polity when their clout in that region is negligible and they do not rely on the region's support to maintain their positions of power. Conversely, when nationalists cannot make inroads through legal channels, incentives for violence are ripe. Thus, when nationalists in postwar Europe found elites unresponsive, it was state repression that helped radicals build a new group of support around militant action. The larger this new constituency legitimizing violence grew, the longer the conflict lasted.     Abstract: "Nationalism and ethnicity have become, across time and space, a force in the construction of boundaries. This book analyses geographical and physical borders and symbolic, political and socio-economic boundaries, and how they impact upon nationalism and ethnic identity. Geographic and other tangible borders are critical components in the making and unmaking of boundaries. However, symbolic or intangible boundaries along national, ethnic, political or socio-economic criteria are equally significant.     Abstract: "In the last decades, regional and global interconnectedness in East Asia - through trade, investment, migration, and popular culture - has grown, while simultaneously we observe renewed national assertiveness and nationalist impulses in the region. The book interrogates these seemingly contradictory developments as they bear on the transformations of the nation and citizenship in East Asia. Conventionally, studies on East Asia juxtapose these developments, focusing on the much-exercised dichotomy of the national and transnational. In contrast, this book suggests a different orientation. First, it moves beyond the simplistic view that demarcates the transnational as "the West". Second, it does not view the national and transnational as contradictory spheres of influence and analysis, but rather, focuses on the interactions between the two, with a view on how these interactions work to transform the ideals and practices of the "good nation", "good society", and "good citizen". The chapters cover a broad range of case studies which highlight how the nation is contested in relation to transnational dynamics and frameworks, and the ways in which the relationship between the citizen and (national) collective is redefined, including education, science, immigration and multicultural policy, human rights, gender and youth orientations, contemporary art, cultural diplomacy and regional politics. Analyzing datasets that cover the entire world over long stretches of time, Andreas Wimmer shows that political power and legitimacy are central to our understanding of nation building, ethnic politics and the violent conflicts associated with both. He argues that shifting from dynastic or imperial legitimacy to rule in the name of a nationally defined people was both the consequence and the cause of wars between and within states. Once the 'like over like' principle was established, the ethno-political inequality that characterized nation-states with weak institutional capacity led to further ethnic conflict. Waves of War demonstrates why nationalism and ethnic politics are crucial for a proper understanding of world and domestic politics over the past 200 years"--

    Abstract: "During the first half of the twentieth century, movements seeking political equality emerged in France's overseas territories. Within twenty years, they were replaced by movements for national independence in the majority of French colonies, protectorates, and mandates. In this pathbreaking study of the decolonization era, Adria Lawrence asks why elites in French colonies shifted from demands for egalitarian and democratic reforms to calls for independent statehood, and why mass mobilization for independence emerged where and when it did. Lawrence shows that nationalist discourses became dominant as a consequence of the failure of the reform agenda. Where political rights were granted, colonial subjects opted for further integration and reform. Contrary to conventional accounts, nationalism was not the only or even the primary form of anti-colonialism. Lawrence shows further that mass nationalist protest occurred only when and where French authority was disrupted. Imperial crises were the cause, not the result, of mass protest"--
