    Abstract: Die Yale-Professorin, Kind chinesischer Einwanderer aus angesehenem chinesischen Geschlecht, sorgt mit ihrem sehr persönlichen Erfahrungsbericht über die Erziehung ihrer Töchter für heftige Diskussionen in Amerika. Erziehung bedeutet für sie Kampf. Es geht um gewinnen oder verlieren, um Ansporn der Töchter zu absoluten Höchstleistungen auch mit rigiden Mitteln wie z.B. der Drohung, die Stofftiere zu verbrennen, wenn die von der ehrgeizigen Mutter gewünschte Leistung nicht erbracht wird. Die von Chua selbst als extrem bezeichnete Erziehung weckt beim westlichen Leser starken Widerstand bis Widerwillen. Ihre Vergleiche zwischen östlichem und individualistischem, auf Autonomie bedachten westlichen Erziehungsstil stimmen dennoch ab und zu nachdenklich. Und auch in Chuas Familie gibt es Opposition. Die jüngste Tochter rebelliert und widersetzt sich erfolgreich dem Drill der Mutter. - Auch bei uns bereits grosses Medienecho (SPIEGEL, stern, heute journal, Voxnachrichten u.a.m.).
