    Abstract: One of the most durable figures in modern history, the peasant has long been a site of intense intellectual and political debate. Yet underlying much of this literature is the assumption that peasants simply existed everywhere, a general if not generic group, traced backward from modernity to antiquity. Focused on the transformation of Panjab during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, this book accounts for the colonial origins of global capitalism through a radical history of the concept of "the peasant," demonstrating how seemingly fixed hierarchies were in fact produced, legitimized, and challenged within the preeminent agricultural region of South Asia. Navyug Gill uncovers how and why British officials and ascendant Panjabis disrupted existing forms of identity and occupation to generate a new agrarian order in the countryside. The notion of the hereditary caste peasant engaged in timeless cultivation thus emerged, paradoxically, as a result of a dramatic series of conceptual, juridical, and monetary divisions.Far from archaic relics, this book ultimately reveals both the landowning peasant and landless laborer to be novel political subjects forged through the encounter between colonialism and struggles over culture and capital within Panjabi society. Questions of progress, exploitation and knowledge come to animate the vernacular operations of power. With this history, Gill brings difference and contingency to understandings of the global past in order to re-think the itinerary of comparative political economy as well as alternative possibilities for emancipatory futures

    Abstract: This volume brings together a series of discussions by scholars from a range of disciplinary, (trans)regional and epistemic perspectives that came out of the Berlin-based "co2libri" networking initiative, with longstanding collaborative partners based in the global South. "Co2libri" stands for "conceptual collaboration: living borderless research interaction". As an interdisciplinary and transregional oriented initiative, co2libri envisages a multicentric perspective that integrates neglected positions of Southern theory and praxis into the heart of academic conversations. Co2libri’s collaborative endeavor builds on long-standing active connections with partners in Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Instead of setting an agenda from the North, it proposes to figure out ways forward through collaborative engagement, building on relationships of mutual trust. Using formats that facilitate substantial and open-ended discussion, we are re-thinking theory and method, academic practices, and research ethics, while keeping material inequalities in view.

    Abstract: Der Dreißigjährige Krieg gilt als die größte Katastrophe und traumatischste Kriegserfahrung der deutschen Geschichte vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Tatsächlich litten in vielen Regionen große Teile der Bevölkerung schwer unter den Kriegshandlungen und ihren Folgen. Zugleich gab es aber auch deutliche regionale und soziale Unterschiede: Während viele Hab und Gut oder sogar ihr Leben verloren, arrangierten sich andere mit dem Krieg oder konnten sogar von ihm profitieren, selbst in schwer vom Krieg betroffenen Regionen "mitten in Deutschland". Grundsätzlich gilt: Der Dreißigjährige Krieg wurde von den meisten Menschen nicht nur passiv erlitten, sondern immer auch aktiv bewältigt. Der Band untersucht die dabei zum Tragen kommenden Praktiken individueller, kollektiver wie institutioneller Akteure und arbeitet damit die verschiedenen Handlungsoptionen und Bewältigungsstrategien heraus

Gleichzeitig dient/e der Radikalitätsbegriff als Projektionsfläche für Normierungsprozesse und Ausschlussmechanismen sowie politische, soziale und religiöse Kämpfe. Der vorliegende OeZG-Band widmet sich diesen Selbst- und Fremdzuschreibungen der Radikalität in Arbeiter_innen- und Frauen_bewegungen vom 19. bis zum 21. Jahrhundert. Die Beiträge reflektieren Radikalitätsbegriffe aus intersektionaler Perspektive und fokussieren auf deren zeitliche, räumliche und soziale Verortung. Unter den thematisierten Akteur_innen sind argentinische Anarchist_innen in den 1890er-Jahren, Aktivist_innen der Red-Power-Bewegung der 1960er- und 1970er-Jahre oder feministische Theoretiker_innen bis in die Gegenwart zu finden. Interviews mit zwei Klima-Aktivistinnen führen den Radikalitätsdiskurs in die Erregungszustände der Gegenwart. Die Grenzen zwischen dem, was für die Akteur_innen als radikal oder konservativ, als modern oder traditionell, als progressiv oder reaktionär galt und gilt, zogen/ziehen sie - manchmal starr, manchmal beweglich - an unterschiedlichen Stellen.     Abstract: "Salo Baron was born in 1895 under the Habsburg empire and became one of the greatest historians of Judaism. He testified at the Eichmann trial. Baron was invited to teach in New York in 1926. When he got here he discovered what he thought was the American exception: as a new society, the United States would have not experienced any persecutions of Jews. That would alone refute--in his own words--"a lachrymose version of history," the story that lays out the destiny of Judaism as an uninterrupted list of persecutions and massacres. At most, he thought, American Jews would meet with prejudice or social barriers, but never antisemitism theorized as a political ideology. And yet, in 1913, in Atlanta, there was the case of Leo Frank: the lynching of a Jew accused of the ritual murder of a young woman, even though the charges had been dropped. It was the first American instance of hate-driven antisemitism. Some years later, Roosevelt's New Deal radically transformed the destiny of American Jews. For the first time powerful figures such as Henry Morgenthau and Louis Brandeis came to the fore, and Jews experienced a newfound prominence. Antisemites in America declared that Jews, having taken over the government, would destroy America's identity. During the period from Roosevelt to Obama, antisemitism increased and was clearly seen recently in the neo-Nazi march in Charlottesville in 2017 and in the Tree of Life Synagogue mass shooting in Pittsburgh in 2018. Antisemitic violence continues to grow here. On January 6, 2021, the attempted coup against the Capitol saw an outpouring of violently antisemitic slogans. All of which begs the question: does this mean that the romantic view of American exceptionalism, sanctified by many historians of American Judaism, has been refuted once and for all? Is the idea of this place of exile, seen as a protective and exceptional "home," in fact an illusion? Should it also be considered as the return of a "lachrymose" history? This book seeks to explore the answers to these questions"

It considers food crises in Algeria, West and Equatorial Africa, and Indochina to show how the French colonial state and the international community took increasing responsibility for subsistence, and ultimately failed to fulfill this responsibility"--
    Abstract: The Starving Empire traces the history of famine in the modern French Empire, showing that hunger is intensely local and sweepingly global, shaped by regional contexts and the transnational interplay of ideas and policies all at once. By integrating food crises in Algeria, West and Equatorial Africa, and Vietnam into a broader story of imperial and transnational care, Yan Slobodkin reveals how the French colonial state and an emerging international community took increasing responsibility for subsistence, but ultimately failed to fulfill this responsibility. Europeans once dismissed colonial famines as acts of god, misfortunes of nature, and the inevitable consequences of backward races living in harsh environments. But as Slobodkin recounts, drawing on archival research from four continents, the twentieth century saw transformations in nutrition, scientific racism, and international humanitarianism that profoundly altered ideas of what colonialism could accomplish. A new confidence in the ability to mitigate hunger, coupled with new norms of moral responsibility, marked a turning point in the French Empire's relationship to colonial subjects-and to nature itself. Increasingly sophisticated understandings of famine as a technical problem subject to state control saddled France with untenable obligations. The Starving Empire not only illustrates how the painful history of colonial famine remains with us in our current understandings of public health, state sovereignty, and international aid, but also seeks to return food-this most basic of human needs-to its central place in the formation of modern political obligation and humanitarian ethics

    Abstract: Migration, in its many forms, has often been found at the center of public and private discourse surrounding German nationalism and identity, significantly influencing how both states construct conceptions of what it means to be "German" at any given place and time. The attempt at constructing an ethnically homogeneous Third Reich was shattered by the movement of refugees, expellees, and soldiers in the aftermath of the Second World War, and the contracting of foreign nationals as Gastarbeiter in the Federal Republic and Vertragsarbeiter in the German Democratic Republic in the 1960s and 70s diversified the ethnic landscape of both Cold War German states during the latter half of the Cold War. Bethany Hicks shows how the regional migration of East Germans into the western federal states both during and after German unification challenged essential Cold War assumptions concerning the ability to integrate two very different German populations.

    Abstract: "In 1997, the publication of Rape in Antiquity established rape as a viable field for classical scholarship. This wideranging new survey builds on that volume's legacy to show what has changed in classical research relevant to understanding rape. It responds to the debates around how to define rape that have emerged over recent decades, including over how to categorise rape both in emic and in etic terms, especially when the Greeks and Romans lacked any word that corresponded with our 'rape' yet possessed an extensive vocabulary for use in relation to coercive and other forms of 'bad' sex. The contributors, brought together from across the world, and including senior researchers and emerging scholars, engage both with developments in classical research and with developments in other disciplines that can frame new approaches to ancient evidence; these include feminist theory, psychology and conflict studies. They look at the move to locate the female 'voice' and female subjectivity, including in seemingly unlikely places; the identification of violence against women as a tool of ancient warfare; and definitional issues including the shift advocated by Stewart and others from 'rape' to 'rape?'. Through its coherent goal - of showing the ongoing relevance of rape as a topic for classical research - the volume is also the first to present multiple and diverse perspectives in terms of chronology from ancient Greece, ancient Rome, Late Antiquity and the postclassical periods, and in terms of evidence including law, drama, medical literature, art, philosophy, and postclassical art, cinema and graphic novels"--

    Abstract: Verlagsinfo: Im schlesischen Breslau (seit 1945 Wroclaw/Polen) lebte in der Zwischenkriegszeit die drittgrößte jüdische Gemeinde des Deutschen Reichs (nach Berlin und Frankfurt) mit etwa 24.000 Mitgliedern. Sie erlebten die Ausgrenzung aus dem städtischen Raum, Verfolgung und Vernichtung durch die Nationalsozialisten wie Jüdinnen und Juden in anderen deutschen Städten auch. Doch die NS-Zeit ist für Breslau wenig erforscht - weder in Polen noch in Deutschland wurde das Thema intensiver bearbeitet. Der Wechsel der staatlichen Zugehörigkeit der Stadt 1945, der "Kalte Krieg" und seine Folgen sowie die Sprachbarriere verhinderten dies lange Zeit. In diesem Buch nehmen die Autorinnen und Autoren die Geschichte der Shoah in Breslau neu in den Blick. Das interdisziplinäre Team wählt dabei verschiedene Perspektiven und Kontexte, in denen Ausgrenzung, Verfolgung und Vernichtung im städtischen Raum geschahen, und rekonstruiert Orte und Sphären jüdischen Lebens: Arbeit und Wohnen, Religion und Politik, Kunst und Kultur. Auch die Auswirkungen der Shoah im Rückblick - etwa auf den Umgang mit Friedhöfen, auf die Kartographie der Stadt, auf Erinnerungen an Breslau oder archivalische Quellen zur Shoah - werden thematisiert. Die Texte lassen ein facettenreiches Bild der Topographie der Shoah in Breslau entstehen. Sie möchten dazu beitragen, die Erinnerung an die Breslauer Shoah-Opfer wach zu halten und zu weiteren Forschungen zu diesem Thema anzuregen. Mit dem Schwinden der letzten Zeitzeug_innen werden die (erhaltenen) historischen Gebäude noch mehr zu Trägern ihrer Geschichte(n) und damit auch zu Denkmälern im Stadtraum von heute, die Geschichte und das Erbe der Menschen erfahrbar machen.     Abstract: Started in the wake of George Zimmerman's 2013 acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin, the #BlackLivesMatter movement has become a powerful and incendiary campaign demanding redress for the brutal and unjustified treatment of black bodies by law enforcement in the United States. The movement is only a few years old, but as Christopher J. Lebron argues in this book, the sentiment behind it is not; the plea and demand that 〈"Black Lives Matter〉" comes out of a much older and richer tradition arguing for the equal dignity-and not just equal rights-of black people. The Making of Black Lives Matter presents a condensed and accessible intellectual history that traces the genesis of the ideas that have built into the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Drawing on the work of revolutionary black public intellectuals, including Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, Langston Hughes, Zora Neal Hurston, Anna Julia Cooper, Audre Lorde, James Baldwin, and Martin Luther King Jr., Lebron clarifies what it means to assert that 〈"Black Lives Matter〉" when faced with contemporary instances of anti-black law enforcement. He also illuminates the crucial difference between the problem signaled by the social media hashtag and how we think that we ought to address the problem. As Lebron states, police body cameras, or even the exhortation for civil rights mean nothing in the absence of equality and dignity. To upset dominant practices of abuse, oppression and disregard, we must reach instead for radical sensibility. Radical sensibility requires that we become cognizant of the history of black thought and activism in order to make sense of the emotions, demands, and argument of present-day activists and public thinkers.     Abstract: This open access handbook takes a comparative and global approach to analyse the practice of slavery throughout history. In order to understand slavery - why it developed, and how it functioned in various societies – is to understand an important and widespread practice in world civilisations. With research traditionally being dominated by the Atlantic world, this collection aims to illuminate slavery that existed in not only the Americas but also ancient, medieval, North and sub-Saharan African, Near Eastern, and Asian societies. Connecting civilisations through migration, warfare, trade routes and economic expansion, the practice of slavery integrated countries and regions through power-based relationships, whilst simultaneously dividing societies by class, race, ethnicity and cultural group. Uncovering slavery as a globalizing phenomenon, the authors highlight the slave-trading routes that crisscrossed Africa, helped integrate the Mediterranean world, connected Indian Ocean societies and fused the Atlantic world. Split into five parts, the handbook portrays the evolution of slavery from antiquity to the contemporary era and encourages readers to realise similarities and differences between various manifestations of slavery throughout history.     Abstract: Women born in mid twentieth-century Britain were the welfare state generation - not only were their lives fundamentally shaped by the welfare state, they helped to transform it. In this ground-breaking work, Eve Worth examines the impact of the welfare state on the life course of women whose opportunities and social experiences were formed by it in the post-1945 period. Centred around an oral history study, this book argues that the welfare state was so central to the lives of women born in Britain between the late 1930s and early 1950s that they should be considered the welfare state generation . The post-war expansion of the welfare state was one of the most transformative political changes of the twentieth century, yet we know little about its development in practice, nor its long-term impact on those who grew up within it. Using a ground-breaking life history methodology to examine women from their birth in the long 1940s to retirement in the mid-2010s, it includes thirty-six original life history interviews alongside social surveys and the Census for wider contextBy deploying a cross-class approach, this book moves the discussion on from just looking at university-educated women, to include women often overlooked in gender and social studies. Re-conceptualising the causes of social mobility in post-war Britain, exploring a new understanding of work and an updated periodisation of welfare state development, The Welfare State Generation offers a new approach to the history of class and gender, arguing that we need to move beyond the focus on women s emotions and personal identity, to consider their experiences and relationships with the state as employer, educator and provider

    Abstract: "As a minority, Jews in Britain are confident, their institutions competent and mature. And yet within Jewish life in Britain there is a pervading sense of anxiety. Jews in Britain have risen to the top of nearly every profession, they run major companies, sit at the top tables in politics, make their voices heard in the media, are prominent in science and the arts. Of course there is serious poverty and gross disadvantage, just as there is in any community. But on any objective measure, British Jews have done well. Particularly when we consider where they came from, the impoverished, often oppressed lives that many Jews lived in Eastern Europe and the Ottoman Empire less than 200 years ago. Jews have lived in Britain longer than any other minority. They've been here so long, and are so ingrained into the national fabric, that they are often not considered to be a minority at all. Until a periodic outburst of antisemitism or a flare up in the Middle East, or both, turns the spotlight on them once again. British Jews have another distinction too. They have lived safely and securely, continuously, in Britain longer than any other modern Jewish community has lived anywhere else in the world. They have organised themselves in a way that serves as a model both to more recent immigrant communities in Britain and to Jewish communities elsewhere. Being British, they wear their distinctions lightly, they don't trumpet their achievements, in fact they rarely make a noise at all. But they give back quietly: established Jewish organisations help more recently arrived minorities to create their own structures, charities draw on the Jewish experience of dislocation and persecution to help oppressed people in the developing world, philanthropists support causes far beyond the boundaries of their own communities. Britain's Jews is a challenging look at Jewish life in the UK today.     Abstract: Queer spaces are crucial for the construction of LGBTQ+ communities, as they constitute places where queer subjects can create political, social, and affective alliances. Júlia Braga Neves shows how these spaces are pivotal for the representation of queer history in the fictional works by the British authors Sarah Waters and Alan Hollinghurst, whose characters and plots are articulated through and within London's sexual geographies. Considering the intersection between gender, sexuality, and class, this study engages with spatial, queer, feminist, and Marxist theories as a means to reflect on London, queer historiography, and the relationship between subject and urban space.

    Abstract: "Colonialism and the Jews in German History brings together new and path-breaking studies on the historical relationship between colonialism and the Jews in Germany. The book considers the mutual influences on the situation of the Jews in Germany, including attitudes towards Jews and anti-Semitism but also Jewish self-conceptions, and the ideology and politics of German colonialism. The contributors discuss the ways in which colonial ideology and practice have affected the position of the Jews in Germany, and the relationship between anti-Semitism and colonial racism. In doing so, the volume introduces German colonialism as a relevant context for German-Jewish history, and it expands the perspective on German colonial history significantly by considering Jews both as distinct objects and also as agents within the field of German colonialism. The volume includes studies on the pre-colonial era, the phase of active German colonialism since the 1880s, and the time after Germany lost its colonies in the First World War. All these studies testify to the fact that German-Jewish history takes on additional significance if seen as part of a global history of collective relationships."--
