Abstract: Volume 13 explores the interplay of identities and scholarship through the history of anthropology, with a special section examining fieldwork predecessors and indigenous communities in Native North America. Individual contributions explore the complexity of women's history, indigenous history, national traditions, and oral histories to juxtapose what we understand of the past with its present continuities. Because this work bridges anthropology and history, a richer and more varied view of the past emerges through the meticulous narratives of anthropologists and their unique fieldwork, ultimately providing competing points of access to social dynamics. This volume examines events at both macro and micro levels, documenting the impact large-scale historical events have had on particular individuals and challenging the uniqueness of a single interpretation of "the same facts."--Back cover

Abstract: Globalisation has had a massive impact on the teaching and practice of anthropology. This important new book, edited by leading anthropologist Thomas Hylland Eriksen, addresses the methodological problems that these changes have wrought, and in doing so fills a major gap in the contemporary study and teaching of anthropology. The essays in this book show how the focus has shifted from traditional studies of specific sites, towards the movements and shifts assoicated with increasing migration and population flows -- the result of living in an increasingly globalised world. Written by a range of distinguished anthropologists, it offers innovative new approaches to the discipline in the light of these changes, making it indispensable as a teaching text, at higher levels, and as mandatory reading for practitioners and researchers in a wide range of merging disciplines. Topics explored include the methodology of studying on the internet; global and spatial identities in the Caribbean; shifting boundaries in coastal communities; the anthropology of political life; issues of law and the flow of human substances; and the diffusion of moral values created by globalisation

Abstract: "Ethnicity and nationalism are pervasive features of the contemporary world. How far is ethnicity a result of cultural differences, and how much is it in fact dependent on the practical use of, and belief in, such differences? Thomas Hylland Eriksen demonstrates that far from being an immutable property of groups, ethnicity is a dynamic and shifting aspect of social relationships. Drawing on a wide range of classic and recent studies, Eriksen examines the relationship between ethnicity, class, gender and nationhood in a lucid and comprehensive manner." "A core text for all students of social anthropology and related subjects, this third edition of Ethnicity and Nationalism is indispensable to anyone seriously interested in understanding ethnic phenomena. New topics covered include cultural property rights, the role of genetics in the public understanding of identification, the commercialisation of identity, and the significance of the internet."--Jacket

Abstract: "Ranging from the Pacific islands to the Arctic north and from small villages to modern nation states, this introduction to social and cultural anthropology reveals the rich global variation in social life and culture. The text also provides an overview of anthropology, focusing on central topics such as kinship, ethnicity, ritual and political systems, offering a wealth of examples that demonstrate the enormous scope of anthropology and the importance of a comparative perspective. Small Places, Large Issues broadens the study to incorporate the anthropology of complex modern societies, thus providing a key text for all students of social and cultural anthropology. This new edition is updated throughout and includes a new chapter on the history of anthropology. It also shows why classic studies of small-scale societies are relevant for the study of complex phenomena such as nationalism, consumption and the Internet."--Jacket
