    Abstract: Violent incidents that took place in 2004 and 2005 in the Netherlands and the UK respectively prompted people to claim that multiculturalism had failed. This claim requires an assessment of the effect of the policies that were drafted based on this political philosophy. In this study, the author analyses two sets of policies developed from multiculturalism: policies of anti-discrimination of minorities and their labour market participation. The effect of these policies is assessed by studying the policy objectives and their results. Based on this review, the author concludes that while there is still much to achieve in the fields of anti-discrimination and labour market participation, multiculturalism did not fail in the UK. On the contrary, it created a positive public perception of diversity and a high participation of minorities in the labour market. This contrasts with results achieved in the Netherlands where policies have fluctuated in such a way that the public attitude towards diversity is ambivalent and the participation of minorities in the labour market is much lower than that of their native counterpart

De antropologe Marijn Kraak vond dat de stem van de deelnemende 'primitieve stammen' niet in de discussie mocht ontbreken. Zij reisde met de DVD van het programma in haar tas af naar de Ovahimba in Namibie͏̈ en sprak met hen over hun ervaringen en het bezoek dat zij voor "Groeten terug" aan Nederland brachten. Ook sprak zij in Namibie͏̈ met andere bij de productie betrokken partijen, liet de programma's zien aan Namibische studenten en dook het archief in van een Namibische krant. Daarnaast ging ze in Nederland op de koffie bij de familie Massing, die samen met de Ovahimba aan het programma deelnam. In haar toegankelijke relaas laat Kraak zien in welke mate de programma's zijn gee͏̈nsceneerd en dat die feitelijk meer over onszelf blijken te zeggen, dan over degenen waarover ze lijken te gaan. Daarmee dwingt zij de televisiekijker zich af te vragen: 'Waar zitten we eigenlijk naar te kijken?'

    Abstract: Historical processes are the result of the behavior of countless individual actors. In this book, therefore, the authors compare the demography of the Taiwanese town Lugang and the Dutch town Nijmegen using data on the life's of thousands of their inhabitants. The period covered is approximately 1850 to 1945. First, the standard demographic rates on nuptiality, fertility and mortality are calculated to test the Malthusian predictions on a so called 'positive' and a 'preventive' demographic regime.     Abstract: Anthropologist Dr Ad Borsboom, chair of Pacific Studies at Radboud University Nijmegen, devoted his academic career from 1972 onwards to the transmission of cultural knowledge.     Abstract: Historical processes are the result of the behavior of countless individual actors. In this book, therefore, the authors compare the demography of the Taiwanese town Lugang and the Dutch town Nijmegen using data on the lifes of thousands of their inhabitants. The period covered is approximately 1850 to 1945. First, the standard demographic rates on nuptiality, fertility and mortality are calculated to test the Malthusian predictions on a so called 'positive' and a 'preventive' demographic regime. Next, the authors try to disentangle the individual rationality behind aggregated measures in order to find out how the inhabitants of the two towns used the one life they had. Unaware of each others existence, the people living in Nijmegen and Lu-kang had more in common than one would expect given the huge cultural differences.
