Abstract: Garden-plot areas spontaneously developed and were distributed across the entire flat area of Ljubljana. Due to a new, more urban lifestyle and a policy change by the city authorities, the area of garden plots fell considerably at the end of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first centuries. The most recent analysis of plot gardening in the City of Ljubljana, which surveyed 302 plot gardeners, showed that the overall infrastructure available in garden-plot areas is relatively poor. This activity is mainly practiced by older and lower-income people, most of whom live in apartment buildings. Due to pesticide residues and heavy metals in the soil and produce, as well as groundwater contamination, plot gardening poses a threat to public health and the environment. The 2008 Draft Ljubljana Zoning Implementation Plan foresees a reduction in the total area of plot-gardening areas by nearly half~however, even the planned community garden plots include some that do not meet the minimum location standards. Some garden-plot areas are problematic primarily because they are located close to major traffic routes. In the future, plot gardeners will have to be more systematically informed and educated about proper and safe use of fertilizers and pesticides

Abstract: The plan of spatial arrangement, which was given to us by the real estate developer to asses (environmental report and the estimation of the susceptibility of impacts on protected areas), deals with 80 hectars of the north-western part of Lipica Stud Farm, which covers the area of the existing golf course as well as the area of its foreseen expansion. We tried to establish, describe and evaluate all the important aspects of plan realization, taking into consideration all of the environmental goals and area characteristics based on the different segments of the environment. A major impact would be seen only in the potentially special protected area of Kras, more precisely on the group of beetles, among which we stress "Morimus funereus" as the qualification bird species of Natura 2000. We suggested the exclusion of 17 hectars of the area from further operations and the establishment of the new distribution of some individual golf-fields. The improved suggestion incorporates the exclusion of a stripe of the western part of the area in question, where there is a habitat of Morimus funereus. This change would also mean the preservation of fossile sites and of maple forests
Abstract: Načrt prostorskih ureditev obravnava 80 hektarjev severozahodnega dela Kobilarne Lipica, kjer sta obstoječe igrišče za golf in območje njegove predvidene razširitve.

Abstract: The extensive groundwater reserves in the Ljubljana Plain, estimated at 100 million m3, represent a natural resource of regional significance. The Decree on the Protection of Sources of Drinking Water divides this water protection area into three drinking-water protection zones. The area is exposed to possible pollution by many activities, among which agriculture is especially problematic because it is not supervised strictly enough. The majority of farms are engaged in traditional animal husbandry, of which cattle breeding dominates
Abstract: Knjiga obravnava gnojišča in gnojnične jame kot potencialne točkovne vire onesnaževanja na Ljubljanskem polju, zaradi prepletanja številnih dejavnosti tudi sicer izpostavljenega hudim okoljskim obremenitvam.

Abstract: Examines the performance of Pennsylvania's workers' compensation system, focusing on benefits and compensation, workplace safety, medical care, and dispute resolution. The authors find that the system performs fairly well relative to other states, but that it faces challenges in improving safety and in dealing with rising health care costs. The authors discuss future policy options, emphasizing the need for more and better performance data

Abstract: Studies to date on illegal waste dumps in the Ljubljana Plain (Ljubljansko polje), the Iška Alluvial Fan (Iški vršaj), and areas with local water sources in the City of Ljubljana have demonstrated that there are great amounts of waste in areas of importance to the Slovenian capital's water supply. In particular, illegal dumps located in areas where groundwater flows towards pumping stations and where the Sava and Iška rivers flow into the groundwater present a considerable threat to drinking water quality. In addition, shallow groundwater levels and gravel pits increase the vulnerability of the environment even more
Dve tretjini odpadkov sta gradbenega izvora. V knjigi predstavljamo tudi izvirno zasnovano metodologijo predloga sanacije degradirane pokrajine

Abstract: The book includes water protection areas near the pumping stations of drinkable water on Ljubljansko polje, consequently in the City municipality of Ljubljana and in the water protection area of the water plant Brest in the neighbouring municipality of Ig. The area of Ljubljansko barje was also included in the study.Water wells have, besides the basic function of preserving water, also an aesthetic and symbolic meaning. Many fountains in public and private use are true works of art, but that wasn't the main interest of our study. We concentrated mostly on private water wells and bores, which are not registered and therefore not supervised
Abstract: Knjiga celovito obravnava zasebne vodnjake in vrtine na območju Ljubljane, zlasti z vidika varovanja okolja in še posebej podzemne vode.

Abstract: The modern way of life requires the exploitation of natural resources, which leads to a significant deterioration of the environment and can even endanger human health. The basic hypothesis is that the population of Slovenia in general is still too inadequately informed and insufficiently environmentally educated and aware about water as a natural resource to have the motivation and capability to actively participate in the protection of water as a natural resource. Most people support environmental protection in principle, especially declaratively, since this is a socially approved action. However, when faced with restrictions that would interfere with their way of life by limiting their activities or increasing their expenses, their enthusiasm decreases rapidly. And the closer we get to actions we could define as "environmentally active," the fewer people are actually prepared to protect the environment. Possibly a fifth of the population can be defined as people who favour environmental protection and consider it a value for which they themselves are willing to do something. The survey showed that level of education is very significant relative to people's response to environmental problems and that the more educated are more environmentally friendly

Abstract: Policymakers have become increasingly concerned in recent years about the possibility of future maritime terrorist attacks. Though the historical occurrence of such attacks has been limited, recognition that maritime vessels and facilities may be particularly vulnerable to terrorism has galvanized concerns. In addition, some plausible maritime attacks could have very significant consequences, in the form of mass casualties, severe property damage, and attendant disruption of commerce. Understanding the nature of maritime terrorism risk requires an investigation of threats, vulnerabilities, and consequences associated with potential attacks, as grounded both by relevant historical data and by intelligence on the capabilities and intentions of known terrorist groups. These risks also provide the context for understanding government institutions that will respond to future attacks, and particularly so with regard to the U.S. civil justice system. In principle, civil liability operates to redistribute the harms associated with legally redressable claims, so that related costs are borne by the parties responsible for having caused them. In connection with maritime terrorism, civil liability creates the prospect that independent commercial defendants will be held responsible for damages caused by terrorist attacks. This book explores risks and U.S. civil liability rules as they may apply in the context of these types of attacks

Abstract: Ljubljansko polje is a juncture of numerous human activities. The source of drinking water for about 300,000 residents, it holds one of the most important bodies of groundwater in the country. Unfortunately, the influences of urbanization, agriculture and industry that threaten and burden it are reflected in the quality and quantity of the groundwater

Abstract: The nation has difficult trade-offs in facing calls on Army forces for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. This report describes the effects of large deployments on the Army's ability to provide forces for other contingencies, to ensure that soldiers are trained, and to continue to recruit and retain soldiers. The authors found that Army plans for transformation and employing reserves at reasonable rates still fall short. Steps to improve the situation all involve high risks or costs. Unless requirements recede, the nation faces an Army stretched thin, with no quick fix or easy solution
