    Description / Table of Contents: In the 1950s and 1960s, images of children appeared everywhere, from movies to milk cartons, their smiling faces used to sell everything, including war. In this provocative book, Margaret Peacock offers an original account of how Soviet and American leaders used emotionally charged images of children in an attempt to create popular support for their policies at home and abroad. Groups on either side of the Iron Curtain pushed visions of endangered, abandoned, and segregated children to indict the enemy's state and its policies. Though the Cold War is often characterized as an ideological divide between the capitalist West and the communist East, Peacock demonstrates a deep symmetry in how Soviet and American propagandists mobilized similar images to similar ends, despite their differences. Based on extensive research spanning fourteen archives and three countries, Peacock tells a new story of the Cold War, seeing the conflict not simply as a divide between East and West, but as a struggle between the producers of culture and their target audiences.--

    Abstract: Fürstinnen in Friedensverhandlungen, Botschaftergattinnen, die ihre Ehemänner in diplomatischen Verhandlungen unterstützen, eine Frau als erste offiziell akkreditierte Botschafterin der Sowjetunion, die Außenpolitik des wilhelminischen Deutschland unter dem Verdacht der Homosexualität: Der vorliegende Sammelband widmet sich der Frage, welche Rolle das Geschlecht und die mit ihm assoziierten Eigenschaften in der diplomatischen Praxis spielten. Unter welchen Umständen konnte die Geschlechtszugehörigkeit vor andere Kategorien wie Stand, Alter, Erfahrung oder Bildung treten, in welchen Kontexten wurde sie zur Nebensache? Sie dienen dazu, durch Bezüge zwischen einzelnen Menschen und Gruppen sowie zwischen Mensch und Gottheiten Kontinuität und Dauer herzustellen. Unter diachron-historisierender Rückbindung in vertikalen Geschlechterfolgen werden soziale Wirklichkeiten konstruiert, die Ordnung, Stabilität und Beständigkeit suggerieren. Brüche und Diskontinuitäten werden harmonisiert, Fortdauer und Verstetigung garantiert und so religiöse, politische und ethnische Ansprüche und Vorrechte legitimiert.     Abstract: Das Bild des frühneuzeitlichen Deutschland ist bis heute geprägt von der Wahrnehmung weißer Akteure. Die neuere Geschichtswissenschaft sieht in ihnen zunehmend Menschen, die vor dem Hintergrund eines gesamteuropäischen Horizontes handelten. Doch lässt sich für Menschen afrikanischer Herkunft Ähnliches sagen? Die Autorin analysiert zum einen deutsche Berührungspunkte mit dem transatlantischen und mediterranen Sklavenhandel und der nordamerikanischen Sklavenhaltung. Zum anderen setzt sich die Studie mit überlieferten Stereotypen über Afrika und Afrikaner auseinander, wie sie in zentralen schriftlichen und künstlerischen Medien der Zeit zwischen 1600 und 1800 vermittelt wurden. Sie untersucht die Rolle von schwarzen Menschen an den Höfen unter für die höfische Gesellschaft zentralen Kriterien wie »Herrschaft«, »Rang« und »Repräsentation«. Jenseits ihrer formalrechtlichen Positionen an den Höfen finden sich vielfach Hinweise auf Integration und Aneignung.

    Abstract: The study describes the process of gradual inclusion of the Jews into the ‚Heimatrecht‘ and citizenship in the Austrian monarchy since the Josephine reforms. The stony path of integration of the Jews into general citizenship which spans centuries and is marked by numerous setbacks allows to shed new light on the act of expatriation of the Austrian Jews during the Nazi regime.The stony path of integration of the Jews into general citizenship spans many centuries and is marked by numerous setbacks. It stretches from special royal protection of the Jews ('Judenregal') via Tolerance or 'Familienstelle' all the way to full citizenship. A description of this development allows to shed new light on the previously dimly lit act of expatriation of the Austrian Jews during the Nazi regime. This was a complex process running in several stages which, although similar to the rest of the German Reich, occurred at a somewhat later stage and already under the sign of flight and expulsion. However, the disenfranchisement and – literally and legally - depersonalization of the Austrian Jews was - so the argument - not just an act of targeted Nazi persecution, but the systematic reversal in rapid motion of the Jews' emancipation which had started at the end of the 18th century. What at first glance appears to have been an abstruse and cluttered convolution of Nazi regulatory activity turns out, on closer analysis, to have been a meticulous reversal of the historical process of 'Jewish emancipation'. Numerous case studies and three major biographical studies towards the end of the book show to what extent the 'Heimatrecht' and citizenship or, by contrast, the fate of statelessness determined the lives and identities of people - far beyond the time of the Austrian monarchy
    Abstract: Vor dem Hintergrund der Entrechtung und Ausbürgerung der österreichischen Juden während der NS-Zeit wird hier der umgekehrte Prozess der stufenweisen Inklusion von Juden in Heimatrecht und Staatsbürgerschaft der österreichischen Monarchie seit den josephinischen Toleranzedikten beschrieben. Dabei zeigt sich nicht nur die Bedeutung der Erlangung der vollen staatsbürgerlichen Rechte für den gesellschaftlichen, ökonomischen und kulturellen Aufstieg der Juden, sondern auch wie sehr Heimatrecht und Staatsbürgerschaft - oder umgekehrt: Staatenlosigkeit - Leben und Identität von Menschen prägten, noch weit über die Monarchie hinaus.Vor dem Hintergrund der Entrechtung und Ausbürgerung der österreichischen Juden und Jüdinnen während der NS-Zeit wird hier der umgekehrte Prozess der stufenweisen Inklusion von Juden in Heimatrecht und Staatsbürgerschaft der österreichischen Monarchie seit den josephinischen Toleranzedikten beschrieben. Die Studie belegt nicht nur die Bedeutung der Erlangung der vollen staatsbürgerlichen Rechte für den gesellschaftlichen, ökonomischen und kulturellen Aufstieg der Juden, sondern ermöglicht zugleich auch einen neuen Blick auf die nationalsozialistische Judengesetzgebung, die hier als systematische, fast spiegelbildliche Rückführung der historischen „Judenemanzipation“ erscheint.     Abstract: Ärzte und Medizin waren Brennpunkte des grundlegenden kulturellen Wandels, den die Juden in Deutschland in der Zeit der Haskala (der jüdischen Aufklärung) und der sich anschließenden Reformära bis ca. 1850 durchmachten. Eberhard Wolff arbeitet anhand von Detailstudien heraus, dass ein modernes, variables Verständnis vom Jüdischsein und eine differenziert konstruierte jüdische Identität in dieser Zeit gerade unter jüdischen Ärzten entwickelt und gerade anhand medizinisch relevanter Themen diskutiert wurden. An lokalen Beispielen wie Berlin, Hamburg, Göttingen und Dresden werden Themen wie der Reformeifer und das säkularisierte Berufsverständnis jüdischer Ärzte untersucht sowie Reformdebatten um die »frühe Beerdigung«, die jüdische Beschneidung oder die Krankenbesuchsgesellschaften einer Analyse unterzogen. Das entwickelte moderne jüdische Selbstverständnis hatte eine komplexe »Architektur«, die weit über simple »Assimilation« oder ein einfaches Modell hybrider Verschmelzung mit bürgerlichen Werten hinausging. So unterschieden jüdische Ärzte mit einem professionellen Habitus gezielt zwischen ihrer ärztlichen und ihrer jüdischer Identität. In Reformdebatten etablierten sie sich als weltliche Experten des Jüdischen und entwickelten ein kulturelleres Verständnis des Jüdischseins mit neuen Leitwerten und Legitimationen, das kompatibel war mit den Anforderungen der Moderne, ohne mit den jüdischen Traditionen generell zu brechen. Ihr jüdisches Selbstverständnis mit sektoriellen und situativen Differenzierungen sowie bewussten Asymmetrien war der Versuch einer Stabilisierung jüdischer Identität im historischen Wandel. Es war eine eigenständige kulturelle Leistung aufgrund eines originären Modernisierungswillens und nicht nur, um Anerkennung in der christlichen Mehrheitsgesellschaft zu finden.

    Abstract: Die Geschichte der Deutschen im russischen Zarenreich reicht bis tief ins Mittelalter zurück. Einen bemerkenswerten Aufschwung erlebte sie 1763 mit dem Einladungsmanifest von Katharina II. Die aufgeklärte Monarchin forcierte die Besiedelung ihres Herrschaftsgebietes und die Erschließung seiner Naturreichtümer. Mitteleuropa war gerade durch den Siebenjährigen Krieg (1756-1763) verwüstet worden. Daher sahen viele Rheinländer, Bayern, Badener und Hessen ihre Zukunft an der unteren Wolga und in der Schwarzmeerregion. Angelockt wurden sie von Katharinas Versprechen, ihnen Religionsfreiheit, Entbindung vom Militärdienst und Steuererleichterungen zu gewähren. Ihre Nachkommen erlebten 100 Jahre später, wie die Reformen Alexanders II. ihren materiellen und gesellschaftlichen Status nachhaltig beeinträchtigten. Die 1897 rund 1,7 Millionen Menschen zählende Minderheit sah sich zudem einem zunehmenden Nationalismus ausgesetzt, der in den Anfeindungen als „Verräter" im Ersten Weltkrieg eskalierte. Pogrome, Deportationen und der wirtschaftliche Ruin wurden von der Oktoberrevolution zunächst aufgehalten. Krieg und Revolution hatten aber die Landkarte verändert, und viele Angehörige der Minderheit befanden sich nun nicht mehr auf russischem Gebiet und dennoch unter sowjetischer Herrschaft. Überließ ihnen Lenin zunächst eine autonome Republik an der Wolga, gerieten sie spätestens Ende der 1930er Jahre im Zuge des Stalinistischen Terrors erneut unter Generalverdacht. Nach dem deutschen Überfall auf die Sowjetunion folgten entweder die Umsiedlung in den Westen durch die Nationalsozialisten oder die Deportation in den Osten durch das Sowjetregime. Erst das Tauwetter unter Chruschtschow brachte den Überlebenden eine begrenzte Freiheit zurück und in den folgenden Jahrzehnten die Möglichkeit zur Ausreise in die Heimat ihrer Ahnen. Biographische InformationenGyörgy

    Abstract: This book provides a view of literary life under the Nazis, highlighting the ambiguities, rivalries and conflicts that determined the cultural climate of that period and beyond. Focusing on a group of writers – in particular, Hans Grimm, Erwin Guido Kolbenheyer, Wilhelm Schäfer, Emil Strauß, Börries Freiherr von Münchhausen and Rudolf Binding – it examines the continuities in völkisch-nationalist thought in Germany from c. 1890 into the post-war period and the ways in which völkisch-nationalists identified themselves in opposition to four successive German regimes: the Kaiserreich, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich and the Federal Republic. Although their work predated Hitler’s National Socialist movement, their contribution to preparing the cultural climate for the rise of Nazism ensured them continued prominence in the Third Reich. Those who survived into the post-war era continued to represent the völkisch-nationalist worldview in the West German public sphere, opposing both the Soviet and liberal-democratic models for Germany’s future. While not uncontroversial, they were able to achieve significant publishing success, suggesting that a demand existed for their works among the German public, stimulating debate about the nature of the recent past and its effect on Germany’s cultural and political identity and position in the world

Joskowicz points to an equally powerful aspect of modern Jewish history: the extent to which German and French Jews sought to become modern by criticising the anti-modern positions of the Catholic Church.     Abstract: The papers collected in this volume congeal around a debate about the ways and extent of the dominance of linear time and progressive history and the concomitant delineation of the nation in Chinese and Japanese historiography. As China and Japan entered the global capitalist system of nation states, the Chinese and Japanese regimes implemented a number of reforms, which resulted in transformations that affected everyday experience. In the face of imperialism and the perceived threat of being split up, the Meiji and late Qing governments radically reoriented policies in order to become wealthy and powerful in the global arena. People not only began to experience time and space in new ways, but elites also were increasingly exposed to Western theories of history and concepts of nationhood, which became dominant. These changes contributed to the production of new types of historical consciousness and collective identity. The essays in this volume each provide a perspective on the complex ways in which imagining national and regional identity in East Asia were and continue to be enmeshed with visions of time and history. This book should be of interest to all those who are interested in nationalism, modernity in China and Japan, global capitalism and the politics of time

In this reappraisal of America's racial and economic inequalities, Thomas Sugrue asks why Detroit and other industrial cities have become the sites of persistent racialized poverty. He challenges the conventional wisdom that urban decline is the product of the social programs and racial fissures of the 1960s.     Abstract: "Combining the tools of political, social, cultural, and intellectual history, Consumption and Violence : Radical Protest in Cold-War West Germany explores strategies of legitimization developed by advocates of militant resistance to certain manifestations of consumer capitalism. The book contributes to a more sober evaluation of West German protest movements, not just terrorism, as it refrains from emotional and moral judgments, but takes the protesters' approaches seriously, which, regarding consumer society, had a rational core. Political violence is not presented as the result of individual shortcomings, but emerges in relation to major societal changes, i.e., the unprecedented growth of consumption. This new perspective sheds important light on violence and radical protest in post-war Germany, as previous books have failed to examine to what extent these forms of resistance should be regarded as reactions to changing regimes of provision. Continuing the recently growing interest in the interdependence of countercultures and consumer society, the focus on violence gives the argument a unique twist, making the book thought-provoking and engaging

    Abstract: "Rückkehr unerwünscht" (Return Undesired) is the first systematic study on deportation in the Habsburg empire. The measures taken against protestants, deviants and losers in the modernisation process are both delineated in detail and in their european contexts.Concerning the historiography of the Habsburg empire this volume is breaking new ground in respect of deportation. Whereas scholars in the field of Contemporary History tend to view them as merely epiphenomena of totalitarianism, a more closer reconstruction of its "protohistory" reveals it as an instrument of punishment, of demonstration of power and of population policies that were widely and in a rather "modern" way used in the Habsburg Monarchy as early as in the 18th century.The first chapters are focusing on a synoptic view of the major European powers of the Early Modern Period (Portugal, France, Spain, Russia, the Netherlands) and their attitudes towards deportation as well as on the sürgün-method in the Ottoman empire. The following chapters are dealing with all hitherto known deportations in the Habsburg realm of the Early Modern Era as well as with the rekindled debate on it around 1900. The notion that a country without colonies would be uninterested in deportations as well, is untenable. On the contrary, the Habsburg empire with its measures taken against protestants, deviants and losers in the modernisation process was just numerically ranking in a significant position. The study is grounded on intense archival research, which brought forth a multitude of essential documents that were hitherto unknown or looked over. Eight case studies comprise different regions of the empire and are situated amongst most diverse social strata. All in all they are intended to serve as major building blocks for a "History of Violence in the Habsburg Empire" yet to be written

    Abstract: "Envisioning Socialism examines television and the power it exercised to define the East Germans' view of socialism during the first decades of the German Democratic Republic. In the first book in English to examine this topic, Heather L. Gumbert traces how television became a medium prized for its communicative and entertainment value. She explores the difficulties GDR authorities had defining and executing a clear vision of the society they hoped to establish, and she explains how television helped to stabilize GDR society in a way that ultimately worked against the utopian vision the authorities thought they were cultivating. Gumbert challenges those who would dismiss East German television as a tool of repression that couldn't compete with the West or capture the imagination of East Germans. Instead, she shows how, by the early 1960s, television was a model of the kind of socialist realist art that could appeal to authorities and audiences. Ultimately, this socialist vision was overcome by the challenges that the international market in media products and technologies posed to nation-building in the postwar period. A history of ideas and perceptions examining both real and mediated historical conditions, Envisioning Socialism considers television as a technology, an institution, and a medium of social relations and cultural knowledge.
