Abstract: The Death Penalty in AMS: Legal Frameworks and Practice -- ‘Most Serious Crimes’: In Search of a Common Interpretation in ASEAN -- Authoritarian Regimes and Media: How These Shape Perception and Support for Capital Punishment in ASEAN -- Theravada Buddhism and Death Penalty -- Cambodia and the Philippines - De Jury abolition of death penalty -- ASEAN and the Death Penalty: Theoretical and Legal Views and a Pathway to Abolition.
Abstract: This book contributes conceptually, theoretically and morally to a deeper understanding of the distinctive Asian perceptions of punishment, justice and human rights. Researched and prepared by scholars who have not only been conducting studies on the death penalty in the region but have also been advocating for legal reforms, this edited book touches upon the different justifications for the use of capital punishment in the ASEAN region, exposing the secrecy, sensitivities and dilemmas that mask violations of international human rights laws. The chapters bring in numerous new perspectives which have been overlooked in the traditional discourse surrounding the use of the death penalty, such as that around crimes that do not meet the threshold of “most serious”; the dignity of death row inmates and their families; contradictions within religion and capital punishment; and the way in which growing authoritarianism and the media are adversely influencing the public’s perception and support for capital punishment in the region. In examining how public opinion shapes state policies towards the death penalty and how it varies according to different offences and different states, the authors critically analyse how the international human rights mechanisms have specifically called for ASEAN member states to refrain from extending the application of the death penalty and to limit it to the “most serious crimes.” Relevant to socio-legal scholars focused on crime and punishment in Southeast Asia, and in the Global South more broadly, this is a landmark collection in criminology and human rights scholarship. Abstract: "Eine hervorragende Ergänzung der Literatur über Zentralasien! Abstract: "Bangladesh is a country that has undergone rapid change across a wide range of sectors. Using an innovative interdisciplinary approach the authors examine new insights into understanding diverse themes such as nationalism, soft power, commodification and cultural identity, highlighting the contradictions and contention behind what the authors call ‘the branding game’." - David Lewis, Professor of Anthropology and Development, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK This book explores Bangladesh's shift from a 'bottomless pit' into a 'middle-income' category. Six chapters in the book cover topics on microfinance growth, ready-made garment production, and social safety net programs playing pivotal roles particularly for women empowerment. In doing so, the book shows that the net effect was not just a change to the country's limited number of representative brands, but also a realization of many more brands to have built up over time. Abstract: 1. On Planetary realism -- 2. Age of the Anthropocene -- 3. War against China -- 4. Planetary realism.
Abstract: The book is a study on planetary realism in a critical analysis of Australia in the age of the Anthropocene. It contextualises Australia in the degradation of the biosphere deeply harmful to humanity’s wellbeing, accelerating the threat of nuclear war and the tensions of a declining democracy. The Anthropocene is a critical period, threatening the viability of the Australian nation-state. It involves the decarbonisation of the economy driven by domestic and foreign corporate power, and the geopolitics of world domination as a close ally of the US. Australia’s militarisation for war against China must be contested in the pursuit for a green and just new deal framed in the foreign policy of reconciliation with Asia, including a fully cooperative entente with China Erik Paul (BA, MA Minn; PhD UC Berkeley) is at the University of Sydney. His research focuses on Australia’s relations with the Asia-Pacific region and issues of global governance, and regional and world peace. His latest books include Australia in the Expanding Global Crisis (2020) and Australian Imperialism (2021).

Abstract: 1. Religion and Education in Pre-war Japan: Building a New Identity and Suppressing “Dangerous Thoughts” -- 2. The GHQ’s Initial Reforms: The Dismantling of Japan -- 3. General Headquarters (GHQ) vs. Japanese Communist Party -- 4. University Reform -- 5. Communism in Universities.
Abstract: This book documents Japan's psychological deterioration caused by its defeat in August 1945. Also, Japan’s traumatic transformation from authoritarianism to democracy is detailed. The study exposes an ideological war between the Soviet Union and the USA within American-occupied Japan, which triggered violent polarization among the Japanese. Under General MacArthur’s tutorage, the defeated Japanese were expected to become a peace-loving people, but the Cold War derailed Japan’s progress toward freedom and democracy. The “Red Purge,” instituted by MacArthur's Headquarters (GHQ) from 1949 to 1950, triggered the devastating side effects on Japan's academic freedom and freedom of speech. Stanford University Professor Dr. Walter C. Eells (1886–1962) served at the GHQ as an influential education adviser and became the most vocal advocate of the Red Purge. Japanese Marxist historians have constructed the popular postwar narrative of the Red Purge, blaming the GHQ for every failure. The vast archival materials, including the GHQ papers, Eells papers, and Japanese-language documents, revealed that the Red Purge was a serious propaganda battle between the Americans and the Soviets in a war-torn Japan. This propaganda war engendered the violently polarized political climate, in which the conservative Japanese government behaved according to the dictates of US Cold War policy. By revealing feverish tensions within the GHQ regarding communist influences in Japanese universities, this study sheds bright new light on the Red Purge and its lasting impact on Japan's political future.

Abstract: This book explores the legacy of the Japanese empire in Korea, asking how colonialism arose as a legal idea. What was the legal process behind the establishment of colonialism as Japan's prime strategy towards Korea since the late 19th century? By addressing such questions, it is not only possible to address how Japanese colonialism in Korea was born, but also address how the process behind the making of colonialism as a judicial and legal project was illegal from its origination. As East Asia grapples with a new generation of power politics, these sober reflects lend an important historical context to the struggles of the present. Abstract: "Vincent Brussee is one of the very few scholars who I regularly recommend as essential reading on China’s social credit system. For years, he has remained consistently abreast of the latest developments in this complicated and evolving area, and his writing has helped to dispel the fog of misinformation that surrounds the subject in popular media." --Jeremy Daum, Senior Research Fellow, Paul Tsai China Center, Yale University School of Law "China’s Social Credit System has been a source for fanciful speculation and gratuitous mythmaking. How does it actually work in practice? This book provides a rigorous and detailed review of the system’s historical evolution, its structuring, and its functionality and dysfunctionality. It provides a useful corrective to dominant narratives, as well as a fascinating insight into governance reform in China." - Rogier Creemers, Assistant Professor at Leiden University China’s Social Credit System has fundamentally re-shaped of surveillance worldwide, with discussions of it making it into hundreds of media headlines and all the way into European Union legislation and the United Nations. Social Credit offers one of the first comprehensive assessments of this infamous system. It is aimed at the many experts and professionals – both scholarly and more broadly – that have to deal with its fallout on a regular basis. In a concise format, it covers the questions that have garnered the most attention worldwide: from social credit scoring and blacklists to its history and theoretical foundation. Throughout, its core thesis is that more often than not, even China’s government is at a loss what to do with this messy and complex initiative. This has caused fragmented and low-tech implementation, but where insufficient legal safeguards can have far-reaching implications for the normal market order and for human rights. Vincent Brussee is an Analyst at the Mercator Institute for China Studies, Europe’s largest think tank and research institute on contemporary China. He is the institute’s lead researcher on the Social Credit System. In addition to publishing extensively for MERICS, his work has been featured in Foreign Policy, the Diplomat, and various national outlets in Europe. He holds a graduate degree with the highest distinction in Asian Studies from Leiden University (the Netherlands), focusing on China’s domestic governance.

Abstract: This book provides a space for victims’ testimonies and memories, engages with their experiences, reflects upon the redress movement, and evaluates policies related to Korean comfort women as victims and survivors from the international, domestic, and bilateral realms. Collectively, this edited volume aims to further diversify the scholarship on comfort women, contribute to the existing literature on social movements related to comfort women and other related studies, and, in doing so, challenge the politicization of comfort women. With this objective, the book presents scholarship from interdisciplinary fields that revisit the meaning of victims’ testimonies, memories, and remembrance, social movement efforts on comfort women, and the related role of government, governance, and society by reflecting on the truths about the historical past. In so doing, it initiates new conversations among political scientists, sociologists, historians, and cultural and literary scholars. What do victims’ testimonies reveal about new ways of imagining historical memory of Korean comfort women? How are memories of comfort women and their experiences remembered in social movements, literature, and cultural practices? Where is the place of comfort women’s experiences in politics, diplomacy, and global affairs? These are some of the questions that guide the contributions to this edited volume, which seek to establish new ways of solidarity with comfort women. Abstract: This book explores India’s economic and political relations and defence cooperation with major West European countries—France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom as well as Austria, the Visegrad Four, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden and the Baltics. It examines the complexity, the elements of convergence and divergence as well as the challenges and prospects of India’s relations with these countries and assesses the diverging EU think tanks’ images of India. It focuses on India’s multi-dimensional relationship with European countries, which are major trading partners, a significant source and destination of foreign direct investment, an important source of technology and best practices. Abstract: This book is a collection of essays in Indonesian history and archaeology dealing with different and multiple trajectories, along four broad themes. The first part of the book covers competing or evolving representations of events, customs or traditions, and historical personae in Indonesian official and popular expression, as they are shaped by economic, political, and cultural forces. The second part deals with memories of war and peace, examining transnational conflict and collaboration, the role of political elites and state projects dealing with the aftermath of military aggression, while also focusing on the impact and responses of civilians. The third part focuses on how state and civil societies frame historical figures, in ways that transcend the dichotomy of heroes and victims. The fourth part of the book looks at the way Indonesian museums and museology serve as sites where new kinds of memory work occur, in a post-1998 era. The book is designed with the aim of clearing a space for a plurality of memory works. Discussions in this volume extend from Loloda island in Eastern Indonesia, to Sabang island at the north westernmost end of the archipelago, and to the cosmopolitan centers. Temporally, it covers the colonial, the post-independence and contemporary eras. By juxtaposing diverse works, the book offers a new vista of multiple trajectories of memory being traced out in and about Indonesia. This is an open access book. Abstract: The book analyses how India’s rise to the status of an emerging power has affected New Delhi’s Africa policy, after sketching the historical evolution and normative underpinnings of Indo-African relations, and what challenges it has brought for New Delhi’s engagement with the continent. India and Africa share a history dating back millennia. Today, India is one of Africa’s biggest trading partner countries, second only to China. The country regularly extends lines of credit worth billions to African nations, and its pharmaceutical producers dominate many African markets; almost one-fifth of India’s oil imports and more than one-quarter of its natural gas imports come from the continent. However, relations between India and Africa are far from being limited to economic cooperation. The book scrutinises three foreign policy fields: (1) India’s foreign economic policy towards Africa with an in-depth analysis of Indo-African trade, investment and lines of credit; (2) New Delhi’s development cooperation policy vis-à-vis Africa, its principles, instruments and volume; (3) India’s politico-diplomatic foreign and security policy vis-à-vis Africa, including New Delhi's high-level diplomacy, security and diaspora policy as well as multilateral Africa policy. Abstract: Introduction -- Evolution of China's technocracy in the reform era -- Rising stars from strategic industries -- Technocracy and future leadership succession -- Domestic and international implications -- Conclusion and Discussion.
Abstract: This book focuses on the evolution of technocracy in contemporary Chinese politics and its implications in China’s elite politics and policymaking. The rise of technocracy in contemporary Chinese politics is not only attributed to the meritocratic tradition based on civil service exams in ancient China but also tied to the current authoritarian political system that relies on the top-down cadre promotion approach instead of public elections. Leaders with technocratic backgrounds have brought changes to China’s political landscape since technocrats tend to solve governance issues using technical solutions in an industrialized society as compared to pure politicians and revolutionaries, who are inclined to resort to political, and sometimes populist, options. This book examines the specific tech areas from which top technocrats have been emerging in Chinese politics, which include military and aerospace industry, public health, engineering and science, economics and finance, as well as information technology. It is a unique research monograph based on research on China’s evolving technocracy and its political, economic and international implications that provides a detailed and thorough study of the country’s industrial policies being reshaped by these technocrats and their likelihood of joining the Chinese Communist Party’s top echelon in the next five to ten years. .

Abstract: This book aims to analyze how and why China takes a state-managed marketization approach (SMMA) to energy security against the backdrop of global efforts of decarbonization and intensified strategic competition between China and the United States. How, and why, does China's SMMA work? Taking an evolving, historical perspective, this book explores China’s perception of energy security, the policy process, institutional restructuring in China's petroleum industry, China's foreign energy quest, and the ramifications of the Chinese approach on the international energy market and on world decarbonization. To demonstrate to what extent China’s SMMA differs from other countries, it also makes a comparative analyses of the approaches by China, the US and India. This book will keenly interest scholars of the Chinese political economy, climate change, and geopolitics. Abstract: UMNO A Malay-Ethnic Based Political Party -- Ibn Khaldun’s Socio-Political Condition and Theory of asabiyyah and umran -- Rise of UMNO in Malaysian Politics.
Abstract: This concise book examines the decline and erosion of UMNO as a dominant political party of Malaysia through the perspective of Ibn Khaldun's theory of asabiyyah and umran. It uses the qualitative method of data collection from Ibn Khaldun's original works. After discussing Ibn Khaldun's theory of asabiyyah and umran, UMNOs umranic contributions and erosion of Malay asabiyyah are discussed in detail. The research outlines how asabiyyah led to UMNOs rise to prominence, gain of political power, bringing of progress and development of Malaysia to an umranic stage before it started to decline and erode in concordance with the five stages of Ibn Khaldun's theory of rise and fall of civilizations. This book highlights that early leaders of UMNO played significant role in fostering group feeling and solidarity of the Malays (asabiyyah). Asabiyyah was the engine that propelled UMNO to transform the Malays and Malaysia to an umranic society. In conclusion, the later leaders of UMNO contributed to weakening of the Malay asabiyyah and the fall of UMNO from power in the 14th General Elections in 2018. The process of UMNOs decline and erosion of political power is primarily caused by the leaders’ failures and shortcomings. The author, a Malaysian lawyer and long-standing Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Minister of Justice, Minister of Defence, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Minister of Home Affairs in the Barisan Nasional in Malaysia, concludes with the recommendation that for UMNO to be relevant again in the current political landscape, it must initiate new and serious approaches and initiatives to change itself and must focus on good governance and rule of law in a multi-ethnic Malaysian society. Relevant to scholars and practitioners in political science, sociology, and Islamic studies, this book is a landmark commentary on contemporary Malaysian politics, drawing from the author's own experience as a member of parliament in his various ministerial positions over three decades.

Abstract: This book explores the subcultures, cultural trends and regulations of leisure and subcultures among young people in Beijing from 1949 to the 1980s. It complicates our understanding of the successes of the CCP and the nature of those successes—more a synergy or synthesis than victory over society or defeat. It argues that while the CCP aimed to direct the most private sphere in people’s everyday life (i.e., leisure), it did not achieve this goal by coercive means, but by appealing ways through organized leisure activities. This book suggests that although elements of youth subcultures can be observed throughout the Mao era, we should not treat them as a way of passive resistance. Instead, we must position these subcultures between different layers of the Party’s leisure regulation to examine what the CCP actually achieved. Many people who engaged in subcultures defied the blatant politicization of their leisure, some might have defied the process of collectivization, but few defied the process of institutionalization during which people did not find state intervention contradictory to their own way of pleasure-seeking. This book also suggests that instead of regarding the Deng Xiaoping era as a breakaway from Maoist interventionist rule, we need to see the historical continuity as revealed by the Party’s uninterrupted policy of leisure regulation. Thought provoking and at times amusing, this book will interest sinologists, historians, and scholars of China's social form. Yifan Shi is Assistant Professor of modern Chinese history and politics at School of Politics and International Relations, East China Normal University. .

Abstract: This Open Access book provides a comprehensive analysis of political reforms in Japan since the 1990s, emphasizing the role of ideas in shaping their goals and outcomes. For more than fifteen years following the collapse of Japan’s economic bubble, politicians, business people and academics tackled a range of institutional reforms. The sweeping changes they enacted—covering almost all facets of the public sphere, including elections, public administration, courts and the central bank—fundamentally altered Japanese political processes and policies. Taken together, they arguably represent the final touches of Japan’s political modernization, which had been unfolding since the mid-19th century. Throughout the reform process, advocates were inspired by a combination of liberal and modernist ideas. This book examines those guiding concepts and illustrates the often messy process of applying them to real-world institutions. While most reforms began from common goals, they ultimately produced different—and frequently unexpected—institutional outcomes, which continue to shape Japanese politics. By focusing on the relationship between the ideas and processes that shaped Japan’s reforms, this book presents a broad vision of institutional change in comparative politics. The author of the book Satoshi Machidori is professor of political science at the Graduate School of Law, Kyoto University. The translator and author of the afterword, Tobias S. Harris is Deputy Director of the Asia Program at German Marshall Fund of the United States.

Abstract: This book presents a new organizing framework for studying democratic recession and autocratization in Southeast Asia. By introducing a new concept, “democratic backlash,” the book details how democratic recession inevitably provokes resistance that often forms the nucleus of new democratic movements, and in doing so, argues that it is important to identify these reverse trends that may eventually become dominant. The book contributes to current literature which thus far has sought to understand the causes and consequences of the decline in democracy around the world. Previous literature has focused primarily on advanced democracies, or alternatively, on large scale quantitative comparison. As such, this book helps fill a research gap with its focus on Southeast Asia, employing a comparative case study approach. Chapter authors are experts on Southeast Asia, a region that has experienced democratic recession and autocratization in a variety of ways, from rising populism to military coups. Dr. James Ockey lectures in the Department of Political Science and International Relations, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. He has published widely on democratization and autocratization in Thailand. He is a co-founder and director of the Southeast Asia Research Initiative (SEARI) at the University of Canterbury. Dr. Naimah S. Talib is an adjunct senior fellow in the Department of Political Science and International Relations, University of Canterbury. Abstract: "Edited by two experts in international relations and trade politics, this volume provides the most up-to-date analysis of the CPTPP from economic, political and legal perspectives. It unveils the key challenges confronting the potential accession of the United Kingdom, China and Taiwan to the agreement. Broader issues including strategies of ASEAN, the United States and the European Union are also carefully analyzed. The book will be an indispensable reference for diplomats and scholars in international economic policy." - Pasha L. Hsieh, Jean Monnet Chair Professor, Singapore Management University, Singapore "This book offers a good and comprehensive stocktaking exercise of all major issues involved. It provides a wide range of discussions from cross-disciplined scholars, underpinning a cross-country comparison of CPTPP strategies and approaches and is a well structured volume on regional integration progress." - Huai-Shing Yen, Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research, Taiwan The CPTPP is far from faltering after US withdrawal, several more countries have since applied to join, including China, Taiwan and the United Kingdom, in what some observers see as a contest between China and the USA to control or re-write the rules of international trade. This volume considers the three applications, the likely responses of existing members, the implications for cross-Strait tension between China and Taiwan, and the ability of the USA to influence the outcome. Abstract: This book gives a panoramic review of China's 70 years of modernization, reveals the historical process and logic of the formation of the modernization path with Chinese characteristics, especially focuses on the key decision-making process in the history of China's modernization, theoretically compares the Chinese model and the western mainstream model and summarizes the characteristics and experience of China's development model. At the same time, it reveals the causes of the global crisis from a historical perspective and puts forward the future of China based on historical experience. The book tries to answer the following hot-debating questions: What is the core of Chinese experience? Is China model a new model of modernization? Is China's model sustainable? Is this model compatible with the mainstream model? What is the relationship between China's revolution and modernization? How will China's development affect the world? This book will be found helpful by all scholars, students and the public who are interested in China's development path.

Abstract: “A timely, wide ranging and well- informed collection that presents the balanced but forcefully argued views of some of the best qualified scholars on this issue at a moment when such a book is crucial. An essential primer.” —Kerry Brown, Professor of Chinese Studies and Director, Lau China Institute, United Kingdom “This book delivers a patient, dispassionate, and cool-headed analysis from the authors’ life-long, dedicated research on China… if Australia’s public debate is to have any hope of going beyond media headlines and think-tank reports, this book is essential reading.” —Wanning Sun, Professor of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Technology Sydney, Sydney, Australia “As the world seems to be spiralling toward a new Cold War with China, this edited volume offers a useful corrective to what has been, at times, a hysterical over-reaction to the growth of Chinese global power. This volume could not be more timely or more necessary.” —Michael Dutton, Professor, Smith College London, United Kingdom “This book is a timely and a strong riposte to the narrative that this was all China’s doing…. the authors pick apart simplistic depictions of an ideological stand-off and offer more compelling explanations for today’s rivalries and antagonisms.” —Dr David Brophy, Senior Lecturer Sydney University Derived from an international symposium held in Adelaide in 2021, these essays are an attempt to offer some understanding and explanations for the deterioration of relationship between Australian and China. It is also an attempt to explore the ways by which the two countries can reach some common ground for some shared but different futures, futures without a war hot or cold, between a rising power of China and the status quo power of the West. Mobo Gao is Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Adelaide. Justin O' Connor is Professor of Cultural Economy at the University of South Australia. Dr. Baohui Xie is scholarly teaching fellow at the University of Adelaide. Jack Butcher is a PhD candidate at the University of Adelaide.

Abstract: The book emanates from the geopolitical and geo-economic churning and transformations set in motion by the unprecedented economic rise of China resulting in its expanding political influence across the region and the world. In both the economic and the security realms, the United States and China alike are increasingly seen contesting in shaping the Indo-Pacific regional order to their own advantage. This book unfolds the contours and dimensions of China’s responses to various multilateral initiatives of the US and its friends and allies like Japan, Australia, and India and, to some extent, even ASEAN. While China’s medium-term strategy envisages a non-hostile external environment in order to focus on domestic priorities; reducing dependence of littoral nations of the Indo-Pacific region on America while increasing their engagement and dependence on China. China's expanding reach and influence overseas has resulted in US-led initiatives being China-focused inviting a response from China where adverse reactions have become increasingly palpable. Prof Swaran Singh is professor of diplomacy and disarmament at Jawaharlal Nehru university (New Delhi) and currently visiting professor at University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada). He is fellow of Canadian Global Affairs Institute, Adjunct Fellow of The Charhar Institute (Beijing) and president of Association of Asia Scholars (asiascholars.in). She is Secretary General, Association of Asia Scholars (asiascholars.in) and founding editor of Millennial Asia, an International Journal on Asian issues.

Abstract: This book explores the challenges China has faced during its economic restructuring, including trade wars, rising costs of labor and land, climate change, recalcitrant state-owned enterprises, an aging population and other problems. Since its historic reform and opening up, China has achieved and sustained remarkable economic growth driven primarily by manufacturing and the real estate industry. As the country continues to move up the supply chain, "Made in China," once synonymous with poor quality, but has come to mean advanced technologies. China’s future economic growth and its success in economic restructure will depend crucially on the dynamic evolution of the country's comparative advantages. Contributors examine how the dynamic evolution of China’s comparative advantages can help the country overcome two closely related problems: heavy dependence on low value-added exports and the prospects of falling into the middle-income trap. The book will be of value to researchers interested in China’s economic development and policies. Xianming Yang is a professor and doctoral student supervisor at the Development Institute of Yunnan University and chair of the Yunnan Economic Association. .

Abstract: This book constitutes a timely intervention into debates over the status of Taiwan, at a moment when discussions of democracy and autocracy, imperialism and agency, unipolarity and multipolarity, dominate the intellectual agenda of the day. Pursuing a parallel trajectory that is both epistemic and historical, that is traced out in relation both to Taiwan’s recent history and to the disparate forms of knowledge production about that history, this work engages in scholarly debate about some of the burning issues of our time, including transitional justice, hegemony and conspiracy in the digital age, debt regimes, cultural difference, national language, and the traumatic legacies of war, colonialism, anticommunism, antiblackness, and neoliberalism. Providing trenchant analyses of the fundamental bipolarity that persists amidst both unipolar and multipolar conceptions of the world schema inherited from the colonial-imperial modernity, this book will be of interest to scholars in many fields, including translation studies, postcolonial studies, Marxism studies, trauma studies, media studies, poststructural theory, gender studies, cold war studies, and area studies. Neoliberal Hegemony and the Populist Moments: Whither Islamism? -- Chapter 7. Conclusion.
Abstract: This book examines the failure of Islamic politics in becoming a hegemonic force in Indonesia and the far-reaching consequences for current practices of democracy and of Islam itself. In contrast to the thesis of compatibility between Islam and democracy following the dominant discourse of the Global War on Terror (GWOT) and neoliberal democracy, this study situates Islamic politics in broader social settings by examining its nature and trajectories throughout Indonesia’s modern political history. The book thus investigates how the practices of Islamic politics, or Islamism, have shaped and been transformed through political contestations and the formation of coalitions of multiple forces in constructing Indonesia’s socio-political landscape. Using the concept of hegemony from poststructuralist discourse theory, the analytical framework applied in this book goes beyond liberal epistemologies of Islamism that prescribe the separation of religion from politics and treat Islamism as an object of intervention. Instead, the book is premised on the contention that Indonesia is a political construction, in which Islam has become one of the major discourses that have defined and transformed Indonesia’s nation-state throughout history. In this view, it is argued that the nature and dynamics of Islamism are not driven primarily by different interpretations of religious doctrines, cultural norms or by the imperative of institutions. Rather, the struggles of different Islamist projects in their quest for hegemony are contingent on the outcomes of socio-political changes and contestations that involve multiple political forces, both within and beyond the Islamists, in specific historical conjunctures. Abstract: This book illuminates the importance of the citizen charter (CC) in local service delivery in Bangladesh. It describes how CC was implemented into the service delivery process and its impact. In the 1970s, the transition from traditional public administration to new public management was inspired by globalization, the emergence of an information and technological society, and many economic theories, such as public choice, principal-agent theory, and transaction cost. The purpose of the government in a welfare state is to serve the citizens by providing essential services. However, public service delivery in most developing nations is ineffective owing to corruption, waste of public funds, a lack of responsibility on the part of public employees, etc. In this context, CC emerged as a means of educating individuals on many elements of services, so they may hold service providers accountable. Thus, the issue of framing and implementation of CC has been put in place due to the persistent pressing of academicians, politicians, and practitioners advocating for better local service delivery. Abstract: This volume explores the implications of pluralism for international order. Distinguished contributors from around the world offer insights into the character of a pluralistic world order. They focus especially on the manifestations of international pluralism in great power relations, multilateralism, and regionalism. Contributors examine the myriad challenges a pluralistic world order will face in the years ahead, yet they eschew alarmist conclusions. There is still scope for the great powers to better manage their relations, and equally important, much space for multilateralism and regionalism to play their increasingly important roles in stabilizing world order. Distinctive in bringing the themes of pluralism and world order together in both theoretical exposition and policy discussion, this book offers a stimulating reading for scholars and practitioners of world politics. Feng Zhang is Professor of International Relations and Executive Dean of the Institute of Public Policy at the South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, and editor of the series in which this book appears. He studies Sino-American relations, Chinese foreign policy in East Asia, international relations in East Asian history, and international relations theory. He is the author of Chinese Hegemony: Grand Strategy and International Institutions in East Asian History (Stanford, 2015) and, with Professor Richard Ned Lebow, of Taming Sino-American Rivalry (Oxford, 2020) and Justice and International Order: East and West (Oxford, 2022).

Abstract: This book presents South Asian women’s voices which have been marginalised in the conceptualization of international relations in the region. It highlights critical issues of importance for women which are often neglected in traditional International Relations studies. Embracing Feminist epistemology and ‘situated knowledge’, the book re-imagines the theory and practice of International Relations in South Asia, placing women’s experiences at the centre. Refusing the temptation to typecast women, the book showcases the varied reflections of South Asian women in international relations with contributions from an eclectic set of authors from different nationalities. In doing so, the book expands the ontological and epistemological horizons of International Relations by including issues like caste, conflict, and social movements. While some of these are uniquely South Asian, all of them show how the field of IR in general can be enriched by being more inclusive. This book will be of interest to researchers and graduate students, as it provides a fresh re-conceptualization of International Relations from gender as well as global south perspective. Abstract: In diesem Buch wird die chinesische Politik theoretisiert, insbesondere Chinas "deliberative Demokratie (xieshang minzhu 协商民主)". Abstract: This book began as a year-long ethnography of a school in Taiwan in 1991 then evolved more into a historical sociology of national formation and its cultural mindset. Cultural nationalism is a widely debated but poorly understood process. Contrary to prevailing perceptions, the Cold War may have given way to a more progressive open society, but the politicization of ethnicity hardened a more deeply entrenched cultural frame of mind. Instead of liberating an indigenous reality, Taiwanese consciousness has ironically polarized the political dead ends of reunification and independence. In the final analysis, the ethnography can serve as a paradigmatic case study for critical cultural studies. There are clear ramifications also for a comparative study of the cultural politics of other Chinese speaking or Asian societies and their histories. Abstract: This book offers comprehensive review and analysis of official corruption in post-Mao China, arguing that this complex political and social malaise is the consequence of a variety of contributing factors, which include political, social, traditional/cultural, or structural, institutional, governance or policy failures. This study distinguishes itself from the methodologies of other studies by classifying corruption into detailed categories and sub-categories, accompanied by abundant cases and examples of the irregularities and offences. Contents are organized into four categories – bureaucratic corruption, regulatory corruption, corruption in judiciary, and corruption characteristic of socialist reform China, and each category is further divided into detailed subcategories to pin down the patterns, actors, loci, as well as inducements of corruption originated from either political institutions, economic structures, or sociocultural norms. Given its comprehensiveness and in-depth of information and analysis, this book is a useful reference for those interested in political and government corruption in post-Mao China. Forest C. Sun is a Canadian author whose research concerns government corruption and public policy. Forest's research interests include corruption and immigration among others.

Abstract: The book provides a comprehensive analysis of the emergence, political economy and foreign relations of Japan’s relations with the Middle East, with an emphasis on its relations with the states in the Gulf Region. It offers both country specific case studies and thematic chapters, providing comprehensive study on Japan’s relations with the Gulf and the wider Middle East. Japan enjoys a strategic partnership with the Arab Gulf countries in terms of its energy trade, yet this has morphed into a wider trading relationship with the wider Middle East. The book studies Japan’s relations with Israel, Egypt and Turkey, covering security, the oil sector and the LNG sector Middle East. This will allow this book to go beyond its rich analytical and empirical content. Abstract: Myanmar has faced numerous divisions that hinder its democratization and peacebuilding processes since emerging out of decades of military dictatorship. The coup d’état in 2021 terminated Myanmar’s limited and nascent democratization under the civilian leadership of the National League for Democracy (NLD); not only did the coup regime resurface old struggles, but also created new ones. Against the backdrop of Myanmar’s changing political landscapes from military to quasi-civilian to civilian rule in 2016, and back to military rule in 2021, the book discusses the various forms of interconnected struggles, both old and new. In this process, the contributed chapters come together to highlight the changing dynamics of stakeholders, relations between agents and beneficiaries, and the generated evolutionary processes in Myanmar’s democratization and its reversal. This book brings an even mix of researchers both within and outside of Myanmar to critically discuss how different agents and their interactions, in the form of center-periphery as well as state-non-state relations, continuously shape today’s political landscape. Its interdisciplinary composition also invites readers from various backgrounds to grasp with engaged research that identifies the various challenges and addresses ways in which to facilitate change from local and international perspectives.

Abstract: This open access book examines Malaysian politics using a linguistic perspective. It explores how language serves to (de)legitimise governance, and its subsequent policies and activities in Malaysia. Grounded in discourse studies, this edited volume presents research on the discourses produced by and on Barisan Nasional, Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional from 2008 to 2020, studying how political actors (de)legitimise their governance through discursive means. The thirteen original chapters select spoken, print and digital texts in English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil, and deploy varied theoretical and methodological approaches. Their linguistic analysis unearths the language features and strategies that facilitate (de)legitimation. It shows how political actors shape the discursive representation and evaluation of multiple concerns in Malaysia. Consequently, Discursive Approaches to Politics in Malaysia: Legitimising Governance improves our understanding of contemporary Malaysian political discourse. It is of interest to graduates and researchers in the field of discourse studies, seeking to understand the discursive contours of politics in this developing Asian country.

Abstract: This is an authored volume of Dr. Yao's “big-picture” writings on China and the West, translated by David Ownby. Those writings are selected from his writings as a public intellectual, reflecting his thought on China’s path of modernization and the effort to rebuild a political philosophy based on Confucianism, his interpretation of China’s political system and his prescriptions to improve it. A moderate, yet influential scholar, Yao's work has had great influence on Chinese social and economic policymakers; his project of renewing China's traditional value system is an important position, as Chinese reforms begin to focus on equity and inclusion. In an engaging, at times personal, and thoughtful volume, Dr. Yao's vision of a gentler Chinese society will interest Sinologists, political scientists, and journalists. Yang Yao is a Professor and Dean at Peking University's National School of Development in China. David Ownby is a Chinese scholar at Montreal University's Department of History and Center for East Asian Studies.

Abstract: This book analyzes Ohira's ideology, philosophy, and actions as a politician and a minister, based on primary sources from Japan and the USA, and makes a significant contribution to the field of Japanese political and diplomatic history. This book is the first critical biography to chart Masayoshi Ohira’s life and work, with a focus on his political philosophy, and how he sought to create a new order in the Asia-Pacific region, framing a plan for solidarity across the Pacific Rim. If a statesman is a politician who has made diplomacy their life's work, then Ohira can be regarded as the first Japanese statesman of the modern era. While this ambition remained unfulfilled, Ohira's involvement in foreign policy was long and intensive—and highly influential—on the region. One of only two postwar prime ministers to have served as foreign minister for two terms, he attempted to balance the pursuit of a new order in the Pacific Rim with Asian diplomacy and focused on cooperation with the USA without becoming overly reliant on it. With the new availability of original documents decades after his death, this book has become possible, enabling the author to systematically follow and record Ohira's diplomatic vision. Combining history, political philosophy, political science, and international relations, this book is of appeal to history scholars and students of Japan, as well as of the foreign relations of countries such as the USA, China, and Korea.

Abstract: The book examines, linking two key variables – ‘political leadership’ and ‘foreign policy’ – the role of Deng Xiaoping in China’s foreign policy shift after Mao in politico-strategic and economic domains. The book finds out that guided by his own personality, worldview, experience, pragmatism, belief and style Deng attempted to resolve the long-standing domestic and foreign policy issues. Most importantly, Deng moved from the primacy of politics to economic modernisation which resulted in far-reaching changes in China’s external engagement. The book's central inquiry is to assess the contemporary relevance of Deng’s foreign policy paradigm. It establishes that the relevance of Deng’s policy continues in the present context except for China’s pro-activeness towards issues pertaining to its territorial integrity and sovereignty. Using China’s case, the study advances the framework of understanding pertaining to the role of political leadership in foreign policy. Abstract: “This clear, coherent, and engaging volume offers important insights into the historical legacy, contemporary importance, and future salience of the San Francisco Peace Treaty and the US-Japan Security Treaty of 1951. It provides a wealth of novel assessments on key issues that continue to shape the contours of the regional security order.” – Bart Gaens, Leading Research Fellow, Finnish Institute of International Affairs and Adjunct Professor, University of Helsinki “The historic 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty set the course for Japan’s postwar politics and foreign policy for decades to follow. Yoneyuki Sugita and Victor Teo have ably put together a collection of thirteen excellent chapters covering wide-ranging topics that examine the continuing impact of that treaty signed seventy years ago. For anyone interested in Japan’s society, politics and foreign policy, this volume is highly recommended.” –Purnendra Jain, Emeritus Professor Japanese Studies, The University of Adelaide This remarkable collection commemorates the 70th anniversary of the 1951 San Francisco Peace Conference by revisiting the important legacies of both the Peace Treaty and the US-Japan Security Treaty have had on the peace and stability of the Asia-Pacific. Drawing on multiple perspectives, the volume conveys the hopes and fears that the authors have for the domestic and international politics of the region. In a post Trumpian world marked by the US-China tensions amidst a raging pandemic, the region’s continued prosperity looks exceedingly grim. Yoneyuki Sugita is professor at Kobe Women’s Junior College. He received his Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1999. His major works include Japan's Shifting Status in the World and the Development of Japan's Health Insurance Systems (Springer, 2019) and, Pitfall or Panacea: The Irony of US Power in Occupied Japan 1945-1952 (Routledge, 2003). Abstract: This book is a study of transnationalism, focusing on experience of migrants, immigrants, travelers, expatriates, aliens, evacuees, refugees, and nomad in the world, broadly, and Taiwan, particularly. Offering an entirely new framework for what Taiwan as a contested transnational space means for Asia—a heterotopia, in which multiple visions of politics and society can flourish—Dr. Pendery's refreshing vision offers insights for scholars of greater China, international relations, and the economics of the region. Pendery establishes a dialog and debate in the book pitting Samuel P. Huntington, Stephen Toulmin, and Edward W. Said, broadly examining their views of these ideas and issues. David Pendery grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, moving to San Francisco in 1984, and obtaining his B.A. in International Relations at San Francisco State University. He received an M.S. in Journalism at Boston University. He relocated to Taipei, Taiwan in 2000, and obtained his Ph.D. in English literature at National Chengchi University in Taipei. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Foreign Languages at National Taipei University of Business. He is married to a Taiwanese woman, and they have a five-year-old daughter.

Abstract: This volume analyses New Delhi’s reaction to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the rise of politics of connectivity and infrastructure building which has heightened Sino-Indian rivalry in South Asia and the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). It can be evidenced that the BRI has transformed the Sino-Indian dynamics from a ‘managed rivalry’ to an intense geo-political competition. It is contended that competition is inevitable when two powers rise in the same neighbourhood. The Indian government has opposed the BRI since its inception noting that the ‘BRI violates India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity’ because one of the flagship BRI projects - the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) - runs through (Pakistan-controlled) Kashmir which India claims to be its own territory. It has consistently maintained that China’s ‘connectivity initiatives must be based on universally recognized international norms, good governance, rule of law, openness, transparency and equality, and must be pursued in a manner that respects sovereignty and territorial integrity’ of other states. Beyond those stated reservations, New Delhi is concerned about the BRI infrastructure and connectivity projects in the smaller South Asian countries and the Indian Ocean littoral states. India has traditionally viewed South Asia and the IOR as its backyard over which it has historically maintained a position of influence. It is apprehensive that the BRI projects will enhance Beijing’s stature and undermine India’s influence in the region. In eleven chapters including Introduction and Conclusion, this book explores the dimensions of the rivalry and analyses the causes, dynamics and implications of an accelerated Sino-Indian competition. Abstract: This book presents a study of how urban residency in China is regulated by state policy in the second decade of the 21st Century. Far from a straightforward divide between natives and newcomers, policy in this period has created delicate cross-classifications of internal migrants and attendant conditions under which they reside in particular urban areas. With reference to some of the most profound social theorists of the present day, such symbolic acts of division are explained as acts of statecraft carried out by different levels of public administration in the face of multiple quandaries. The book will appeal to those with an interest in the governance of population and territory in China, and by extension, in other parts of the contemporary world. Abstract: Introduction -- Chapter 1 Chinas Energy Diplomacy and its Investments Abroad: Functions, Challenges, Achievements and Influence -- Chapter 2 Sino-Russian energy relations -- Chapter 3 Sino-Australian Relations: Present Trajectory and Future Growth -- Conclusion.
Abstract: This book evaluates China’s energy diplomacy across the globe and how it transcends the barriers to maintain both its security and its Chinese characteristics. How China graduated from 'self-sufficiency' to 'Go out' policy. How will China’s energy security evolve within the ambit of Chinas new normal? For China, its energy security has been of primary importance, both domestically and internationally. This book explores the foreign dimension. The energy security in the Mao era was a necessity, a policy in the Deng era and a strategy in the period henceforth. The book identifies the evolution of China from a manufacturer to an investor, that is, its outbound direct investments in the energy field and the shift in its focus from traditional fuels to renewable energy sources. It goes beyond the traditional choices of energy like West Asia and Africa and explore the lesser suppliers who could have a stronger say in the future to come. Abstract: “In asking the question, “what were we/they trying to ‘free’ Hong Kong into?” Vukovich invites readers to reject the doxa of negative freedom “from” that lies at the heart of contemporary financialized societies, and to start asking questions about the social practices and political economy that sustains it. This gesture makes it possible to discern the ideological effects of the vaunted opposition between freedom and autocracy ostensibly assumed to lie at the root of today’s global political struggles, of which Hong Kong would be the avatar.” —Jon Solomon, Professor of Chinese Studies, Université Jean Moulin "Daniel Vukovich’s After Autonomy is a blistering critique of Hong Kong’s troubled decolonization since 1997, but especially after Occupy Central in 2014 and even more so with the anti-extradition bill protests in 2019 and the enactment of the National Security Law in 2020. Rejecting the “death of Hong Kong” myth, Vukovich explores both the promise and the disappointment of the first twenty-five years of “one country, two systems”. It is a powerful reminder that, although far from dead, Hong Kong is also far from healthy." —John M. Carroll, author of The Hong Kong-China Nexus: A Brief History This book offers a sharp, critical analysis of the rise and fall of the 2019 antiextradition bill movement in Hong Kong, including prior events like Occupy Central and the Mongkok Fishball Revolution, as well as their aftermaths in light of the re-assertion of mainland sovereignty over the SAR. Reading the conflict against the grain of those who would romanticize it or simply condemn it in nationalistic fashion, Vukovich goes beyond mediatized discourse to disentangle its roots in the Basic Law system as well as in the colonial and insufficiently postcolonial contexts and dynamics of Hong Kong. He examines the question of localist identity and its discontents, the problems of nativism, violence, and liberalism, the impossibility of autonomy, and what forms a genuine decolonization can and might yet take in the city. A concluding chapter examines Hong Kong’s need for state capacity and proper, livelihood development, in the light of the Omicron wave of the Covid pandemic, as the SAR goes forward into a second handover era. Daniel F. Vukovich is tenured at Hong Kong University, a Visiting Professor of Politics at East China Normal University, and an Advisory Research Fellow at South East University, Institute for the Development of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics. His book Illiberal China: The Ideological Challenge of the P.R.C. was published by Palgrave in 2019. His first book was China and Orientalism (Routledge, 2012), and he publishes widely in inter-disciplinary post-colonial and global studies of China and the West. .

Abstract: This book theorizes Chinese politics, specifically about China’s “deliberative democracy (xieshang minzhu 协商民主)”. Creating a China-West comparative framework, the author interrogates China's government's claims to give representation to citizens, allowing readers to see how all of these concepts interact within Chinese ideology, democratic discourse, and governance, and their relationship with Chinese authoritarianism. Above all, this book represents a sustained hybridization of political theory, one which is neither a simple democratic-authoritarian dichotomy, nor a reinterpretation of the official propaganda. This study will interest scholars of Chinese politics and statecraft, shedding light on an emergent discourse of the state – Chinese xieshang minzhu. More importantly, this book goes beyond a simple rhetorical and linguistic use of ‘deliberative democracy’ in the Western sense, and rather emphasizes the very consultative nature of Chinese politics, which facilitates and reconsolidates Chinese authoritarianism. Abstract: This book explores the issue of abortion and women's rights in contemporary China. With a vast population, China's government has pursued controversial policies, such as the One Child Policy, in the past. Today, a rapidly urbanizing society is aging quickly, and the policies are loosening; but what are the implications for Chinese women, and how do policies compare to those in the West? In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Jiang eludicates the Chinese legal and social history of abortion for the first time in English. This book will be of interest to lawyers, NGO researchers, feminists and academics. Wenjun Jiang is a researcher at the Peking Union Medical College Hospital, and holds a PhD in law from Beijing Normal University. She is among China's foremost scholars on reproductive policy and the law.

Abstract: The book provides a comprehensive understanding of the unfolding geopolitical changes in the South Caucasus in the age of increased great power competition across Eurasia. Recent research on the geopolitics of the South Caucasus focuses either on interstate relations among Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia or on each of regional actor’s (Russia, Turkey and Iran) ties with the region’s one or all three states. Little attempt has been made to see the region’s shifting geopolitical importance from a global perspective: growing US-China rivalry and shifting balance of power in Eurasia; recalibration of the US’ military and diplomatic vision in western Eurasia to adjust to the Chinese challenge. The book argues, from a theoretical point of view, that the increased competition in the region fits into the global pattern of unfolding great power competition, when military and economic calculations drive regional powers to increase their influence on immediate neighborhoods sidelining the collective West from the negotiating table and the emerging new security architecture. Emil Avdaliani is Professor of International Relatios at European University, Tbilisi, Georgia and the head of Middle East Studies at Geocase. Abstract: 'Dr. Asghar Khan has written a conceptually sophisticated and empirically rich study of one of the most understudied, yet important regions of Pakistan – the FATA. Combining years of fieldwork with a robust political science framework, Dr. Khan offers new insights which challenge many of the dated and harmful assumptions about this place and its people. This volume is sure to become a must read for anyone interested in this ‘ungovernable’ space.' —Benjamin D. Hopkins, Professor of History, Elliott School of International Affairs, The George Washington University, Washington, DC, USA The book addresses why the Pakistani state is facing persistent challenges in extending and consolidating its governance (authority) throughout its territories, especially in the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (ex-FATA)? Even after the de jure merger, the question still remains valid that how Pakistani state could establish its governance in these tribal areas? Through multi-dimensional approaches and multi-pronged analysis of state-centric (top-down), society-centric (bottom-up) and state-in-society (mixed-horizontal) approaches, the book explains factors and dimensions that pose challenges to Pakistani state governance in ex-FATA. The main hypothesis is that societies, where state governance is absent, turn to informal governance and create informal institutions as a substitute for the weak central state governance thereby challenging the domination and control/authority of the state. The book presents policy recommendations for bringing these tribal areas into the mainstream governance system of Pakistan. Asghar Khan is the head of the Department of Regional Studies, University of Peshawar, and teaches Political Science there.

Abstract: The book presents findings of anthropological studies conducted by researchers from Agricultural Technology Demonstration Center in a number of African countries, including Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Mozambique. The aim of these ethnological studies is to understand the Center’s experience in these countries as well as the way it works in terms of institutional arrangement, interaction between Chinese and local staff and technology transfer. A basic contention of the book is that insofar as these Centers showcase China’s achievements in domestic development for purpose of sharing the country’s experiences with host countries, what they do essentially points toward a new and innovative approach to foreign aid.

Abstract: This book examines how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has sought to legitimise its counter-terrorism strategy in the eyes of its domestic and international audiences. An important element of CCP policy in Xinjiang has been the deployment of ordinary Chinese citizens, or the 'mass line,’ to create new realities on the ground. This book explores how the history of ideological struggle in the PRC has taken on new characteristics, as well as offering insight into how the CCP has maintained legitimacy in the eyes of its population, even as it pursues policies which are internationally controversial, shedding light on the past and future of the behaviour of the Chinese state, a subject of interest to China scholars, scholars of the Belt and Road, and counter-terrorism experts.

Abstract: The book aims to build a political theory of interest politics by adopting an interest-analyzing approach of Marxism to explore the dual characteristics of social interests. Based on the logical start-point, the book unveils the foundations, nature, and characteristics of social-political life such as political power and political right. Then, a systematic research is conducted from perspectives of political behavior, political system, and political culture, following the two logical thread lines as political power and right. Finally, the book sees the analysis of social and political development in accordance with the inter-function of political power and political rights caused by the changes and development of social interests. It is a must-read book for readers interested in the political theory and political development in China.

Abstract: This book offers a new interpretation of the evolution and modernization of social order in China’s grass-roots communities. Traditionally, social order at the grass-roots level was maintained through an organic combination of self-rule by the people and authority rule by political leaders. As a hybrid form of social order, therefore, it not only has features of autonomy but also reflects the power of the state apparatus. Despite the modernization of the nation-state, the old rules sustaining social order at the grass-roots level are still very much in effect and have seamlessly integrated into the new social structure. Unless we fully appreciate this fundamental continuity, we would not be able to understand how social order at the grass-roots level today is upheld and functions. And the modernization of social order at the grass-roots level is most fruitfully studied from the perspectives of the construction of modern public social relations and the development of grass-roots systems of social autonomy.

Abstract: This book portrays the middle class in contemporary China with plain language and precise professional knowledge in an all-round, broad and responsible way from the perspectives of income, property, profession, education, consumption, investment, physiological and behavioral characteristics, history and development. It gives, in a logical order, the reasons for stimulating the rise of the middle class in contemporary China. It emphatically describes what the middle class is and what the middle class in contemporary China looks like. It also analyzes whether the middle class can rise in China and sheds light on the basic thinking, medium and long-term goals, main measures and current work priorities for achieving full rise of the middle class in contemporary China. As China becomes the world's largest economy, the new middle class will be the Chinese people facing the world; as such, this book will be of interest to sociologists, sinologists, political scientists, and economists. .

Abstract: This book introduces the policies surrounding legal gender recognition of trans people in Kazakhstan. Generally, the research in this sphere focuses on medical professions, described as gatekeepers or judges deciding who fit the prescriptions of being a woman or a man, and on trans people themselves, who are often portrayed as victims. However, this process is more complex than only describing the interaction of these two groups or by labelling them either as gatekeepers or victims. The project provides a critical approach and attempts to expand our understanding of the process, the dynamics and the actors involved. This study will be of interest to scholars of contemporary Kazakhstan, and of feminism and LGBTQ activism more generally. Zhanar Sekerbayeva is a PhD researcher. In her work she aims at expanding the concept of ‘gender’ in the general public discourse through activism by mainstreaming questions of gender identity in the academia. She is a co-founder of Kazakhstan Feminist Initiative “Feminita”.

Abstract: “Written by three Hong Kong scholars immersed in the city’s media, movements and culture, the book is faithful to the micro dynamics of a complex city even as it contributes to global theoretical understanding of the relationship between media and politics in hybrid and authoritarian settings.” – Cherian George, author, Media and Power in Southeast Asia “The engaging writing reflects the vibrancy of the Hong Kong media during times of “liberal exceptionalism”. The authors manage to capture this spirit of a bygone era in an outstanding fashion that is engaging and invites deep emotional reflections.” – Malte Philipp Kaeding, University of Surrey “The authors of this title offer an engaging discussion of the interactions between news media and state, market, and civil society. Not only do they give us a solid background to understand the changing dynamics shaping the news media before 1997, but they also offer us an up-to-date analysis of the emerging challenges since Hong Kong’s return to China.” – Tai Lok Lui, The Education University of Hong Kong This book explores the challenges to news professionalism and media autonomy stemming from the state, market pressure, digitalization, and a polarized civil society in Hong Kong. It examines how media organizations, journalists, and the audience responded to ongoing social, political, and technological changes as Hong Kong was governed by the paradigm of integration under liberal exceptionalism. Combining the authors’ close observations of the media scene with systematic empirical data, this book sheds light on the past, present, and possible future of the Hong Kong media. Abstract: This rich and constructive collection provides English readers a window to envisage various aspects of social, cultural, political, and religious development in contemporary Taiwan. —Hsun CHANG, Academia Sinica, Taiwan This book represents a landmark contribution to the understanding of social theory as practiced and taught in Taiwan. [.] This book demonstrates that theory is a living and dynamic world of ideas and practices and that it is in the ‘cross[1]currents’ that really interesting things happen. —Dr. Marcus Bussey, University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia This collection of original essays provides a multidisciplinary forum on contemporary Taiwan, covering a wide range of subjects of profound interest [..] and representing the diversity of approaches to bring new understanding to the past and present of Taiwan as a culture and a society. The collection is a must[1]read book for students and scholars not only of Taiwan studies but also of Chinese studies and Asian Studies. —Yu-cheng Lee, Academia Sinica, Taiwan The book presents aspects of cross-currents of theorizing of self, culture and society in the contemporary Taiwan. Social theorizing has been addressed critically, reflectively and creatively by the philosophical, religious, psychological and literary traditions of one of the world’s great civilizations Theorizing is a dynamic movement of self, culture, society and the world as it is related to our actions, reflections, meditations to understand the world more meaningfully and holistically as well as to transform it. But much of social theorizing in the modern world is primarily Euro-American and despite the socalled globalization of knowledge, this condition of one-sided Euro-American valorization of knowledge and neglect of others continues unabated. There is very little attention to theorizing about the human condition emerging from other parts of the world such as Taiwan and its global implication. This book transforms this condition by mapping the field of theorizing in a wider spectrum of philosophy, psychology, religions, social sciences and humanities in contemporary Taiwan. Ananta Kumar Giri is a Professor at the Madras Institute of Development Studies, Chennai, India. Su-Chen Wu is an Associate Professor at the Department of Foreign Languages and Cultures of Fo Guang University, Taiwan.

Abstract: “Professor Ahn’s most recent volume, Power Struggles: Energy security and energy diplomacy in the Asia Pacific, a deeply researched and timely consideration of the full range of energy security topics in Asia, serves the critical purposes of providing in-depth detail about the energy needs of Asia while also providing incisive analysis about what the international energy security environment will bear. Professor Ahn judges that a US-ROK Alliance committed to effective energy security will make a huge difference. A must-read for specialists but accessible for generalists, Power Struggles is the right book for these confounding times.” —Roy D. Kamphausen, President, The National Bureau of Asian Research (USA) “This wide-ranging book is a must-read for any student of energy security in Northeast Asia. Ahn provides a wealth of information that maps existing and potential energy networks from Russia through the Korean peninsula. The chapter on energy security and the US-ROK alliance speaks to how much supply chain resilience has become a critical mission of the alliance. An excellent read for scholars and policymakers.” —Victor Cha, Vice Dean and D.S. Song-KF Professor of Government, Georgetown University “Professor Se Hyun Ahn has provided timely, thoughtful, and comprehensive analysis of complex energy security challenges in the Asia-Pacific region. I highly recommend his book to those seeking to understand the interaction of energy policy, and diplomacy for energy security in a dynamic region where the growing demand for energy has profound implications for the international political economy and security.” —Charles W. Boustany, Jr., Member of U.S. Congress, 2005-2017 (USA) This book explores the Asia Pacific’s energy security exploring key issues including major trans-border energy projects, energy mix policy, trans- border pipelines, LNG transfer between nations, balance of power relations between major powers, the North Korean energy situation, energy alliances, World Choke point and more. Se Hyun Ahn is Professor of the Department of International Relations and the Director of the Center for Energy Security Strategic Studies in the University of Seoul.

Abstract: This volume focuses on Chinese economic statecraft during the first decade of Deng Xiaoping’s reform and opening-up policies, from 1978 to 1989. During these years, Chinese economic engagement with the external world was tentative and experimental, with long-term strategies still decidedly under development. Prominent topics covered are China’s efforts to steer an economic course tailored to and representing what Deng Xiaoping famously described as “socialism with Chinese characteristics”; China’s quest for advanced science and technology; China’s dealings with international economic institutions, especially the World Bank; China’s engagement with other powers, including Japan, the United States, the ASEAN nations, and Europe; and the role of non-governmental organizations, including foreign policy think tanks, exchange groups, and educational institutions, in developing Chinese economic thinking and methodology during this decade. Contributors also focus on how elements of the Chinese military turned to building China’s new economic infrastructure, and on Chinese efforts to break into foreign markets. The volume ends with an overview and reassessment of earlier findings on Chinese economic statecraft in these years, by one of the leading Chinese experts on the PRC’s international policy. Priscilla Roberts has researched on aspects of international transitions of power and the role of elites, as private individuals and through institutions, in the making of foreign policy in the US, Britain, and the British dominions. She has produced 31 single-authored, edited, and co-edited books.
Note: "The second meeting, a workshop focused more specifically on Chinese Economic Statecraft during the Long 1980s, was held in Macau in January 2020, just a few weeks before the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic made such gatherings impossible. Once again, an array of scholars from Macau, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Great Britain, the United States, and Czechoslovakia came together, for intensive discussions of the subject ... Most of the chapters in this volume originated in papers delivered at that meeting. Some potential contributors who were unable to attend came on board later, writing chapters during the pandemic. Modern technology may have its imperfections, but without it, this book would not have been possible. The workshop on which this volume is based benefited from generous financial support from the Macao Foundation and the Faculty of Business of City University of Macau." - Seite vi

Abstract: China's urbanization has stunned the world in the past two decades- but as the authors of this book explain, the growth is only set to continue. The divide between urban and rural citizens in China implicates every aspect of Chinese life, from education to pollution to healthcare. In this book, one of China's most celebrated academic urbanists and a major urban planner collaborate in laying out and analyzing the problems of China's urban-rural divide, experiences of urbanization, and what the future holds. This book is a must read, not only for the accurate summaries of China's developmental experience it includes, but also for the insights it provides into the mentalities of the government officials and private developers who are creating realities on the ground in Chinese cities. Women Local Leaders within Local Oligarchy Networks in Post-Reformasi Indonesia: Existing Conditions and Challenges.
Abstract: This book employs a gendered perspective to uncover an in-depth understanding of the political role of women leaders in local government in Indonesia. Beginning with the story of two women who successfully won the local elections in Indramayu in 2010 and Tangerang Selatan in 2011, respectively, the book uses their experiences as a point of departure to present a discussion on female political leaders’ part within the larger political dynastic structure in Indonesia. The book explores the multiple challenges and difficulties that these women encountered in reaching power and in promoting local democracy, highlighting the patriarchal nature of the oligarchy. In doing so, this book provides a rich empirical account of the current features of female political leaders and their political and familial, linkages. The research, thus, contributes significantly to the work of scholars and political activists seeking to unpack the process and progress of democratization in post-reformasi Indonesia, in which women’s political participation and leadership are an inevitable and vital part. In doing so, the book champions how Indonesian women are playing an increasingly important role in the democratic process, even in the face of the enduring challenges posed by familial ties and political dynasty factors that continue to hinder democratization—trends that are also prevalent across multiple Southeast Asian countries in the twenty-first century. Relevant to scholars and students situated at the intersection of gender and politics, this translated and updated co-publication is a tour de force, led by one of Indonesia’s seminal scholars in women’s studies.

Abstract: This book covers various strategic issues around maritime security in terms of how Indonesia has sought to implement its Global Maritime Fulcrum (GMF) vision, evaluating its regional impact within ASEAN. The Global Maritime Fulcrum’ vision was declared by President Joko Widodo to refocus Indonesia’s development paradigm to prioritize its maritime aspect in the Indo-Pacific. Divided across five pillars, namely: maritime culture, maritime resource management, maritime infrastructure and connectivity development, maritime diplomacy and maritime defense, the book presents that the implementation of this vision will doubtless have a significant regional impact, particularly in setting regional maritime agendas. In promoting an understanding of the challenges presented in implementing the Global Maritime Fulcrum and unpacking its multifaceted impact in the region, this book delves into Indonesia’s maritime vision, the existing maritime arrangements within ASEAN, and Indonesia’s interests in terms of its political economy relating to the maritime sector, strategic security issues, maritime diplomacy, and related regional power dynamics. Translated from Bahasa Indonesia into English, the book is relevant to scholars and policymakers in maritime studies, international relations, and regional studies relating to politics and power dynamics in Indonesia, specifically, and ASEAN more broadly.
