Abstract: The rapid uptake of digital technologies has hugely impacted on the way we communicate, relate, learn, work, and spend our leisure time. Digital media literacy is the ability to access, understand and participate or create content using digital media. This ability is becoming integral to effective participation in the digital economy and Australian society. Those who do not adapt may fall victim to the 'digital divide' and be excluded. The 'digital revolution' has both positive and negative effects, which are explored in this timely book. On the positive side, people are increasingly being connected across distances with the greatest of ease and innovation via mobile phones, online social networking, blogging, gaming and e-learning. On the negative side are a range of social impacts that are also explored in this book, including internet addiction, cyberbullying, inappropriate exposure to pornography, privacy risks, and cyber crime. Three chapters: Digital media trends and participation; Social media; and Online safety. Also includes: Worksheets and activities ; Fast facts ; Glossary ; Web links ; Index.

Abstract: Sexual orientation and gender identity are separate, distinct parts of people's overall identity. Equality and freedom from discrimination are human rights belonging to all people, however, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, gender diverse and intersex (LGBTI) people experience harassment and hostility in many areas of everyday life. Under recently enacted Australian law it is illegal to discriminate against a person on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex status. Same-sex couples are now also protected from discrimination under the definition of "marital or relationship status". This book explores issues involving sexual orientation, gender diversity and intersex status; and explains what equality means for people who are often subjected to misunderstanding and homophobia

Abstract: Same-sex marriages are currently not permitted under Australian federal law. Although same-sex couples in de facto relationships have had most of the legal rights of married couples since July 2009, there is however no national registered partnership or civil union scheme. Public opinion polls in Australia consistently show majority support for same-sex marriage, yet political and legal opposition to it has stymied a number of recent attempts at state and federal level to legislate for 'marriage equality', which would require amending the federal Marriage Act. Should marriage only be between a

Abstract: The media landscape is changing rapidly. In this new digital age, the mass media is undergoing major structural changes in how it delivers news, information and entertainment in Australia and around the globe. Media organisations are reconfiguring their business models, as newspapers migrate online and television competes directly with online content. The press in particular is now under the spotlight in Australia and abroad with a number of major government inquiries and reviews. Abstract: The pace and scale of Asia's rise during the 'Asian Century' has been nothing short of staggering. Asia is on course to become the world's largest economic region before the end of this decade, presenting Australia with a range of opportunities and challenges. Description / Table of Contents: Australians of all ages have a human right to be treated fairly and have the same opportunities as everyone else. In spite of such rights, age discrimination still occurs widely in Australia. People are often treated unfavourably because of their age, or because of assumptions made about people of that age. Common examples of age discrimination include preferring to hire younger over older workers regardless of their competence, refusing to consider job applications from people over pension age, or sacking younger workers once they reach the age when adult wages will apply. Abstract: There are many types of behaviours that are considered to be deliberate self-harm (or self-injury), and young people harm themselves for different reasons. Non-fatal, self-injuring behaviours such as self-cutting, self-poisoning, self-burning and even attempted suicide are common but often hidden responses to emotional pain, and are attempts to relieve, control or express distressing feelings. This book explores the prevalence of self-harm, identifies the warning signs, and addresses the many myths and misconceptions. Advice is also presented on how to deal with these behaviours for people who self-harm and their concerned friends and families. What are the causes of self-harm, who is at risk, and what are the ways in which young people in distress can find support in order to cope with their feelings? What are the possible links with mental illness or thoughts of suicide? How do you keep out of self-harm's way? Also includes: Worksheets and activities ; Fast facts ; Glossary ; Web links ; Index.

Abstract: Many countries have made real progress towards gender equality in recent decades. However, Australian women continue to earn less than men, are less likely to advance in their careers, and more likely to spend later life in poverty. Key gender inequality issues explored include sex discrimination, human rights and the law; women in leadership roles; and gender equality at work. What is Australia doing to close the gender gap? Abstract: Chapter 1 -- Health status of Indigenous Australians -- Chapter 2 -- Closing the gap in Indigenous health -- Exploring issues -- worksheets and activities -- Index.
Abstract: Since 2006, the 'closing the gap' campaign has been pursued in collaboration between government and health, welfare and rights agencies to close the health and life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians within a generation. The health disadvantages experienced by Indigenous Australians are shaped by history and the broader social and economic conditions in which they live; progress has been slow and mixed. This book evaluates the uneven progress being made towards closing the gap. How can Indigenous outcomes be improved across a range of key social and economic determinants of health and wellbeing? Also includes: worksheets and activities, fast facts, glossary, web links, index. Titles in the Issues in Society series are individual resource books which provide an overview on a specific subject comprised of facts and opinions. The information in this resource book is not from any single author, publication or organisation. The unique value of the Issues in Society series lies in its diversity of content and perspectives.
