Abstract: This database contains thousands of news articles, radio transcripts, and television transcripts from around the world. They were chosen by a U.S. government agency called the Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS)--which became part of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in 1947--to be disseminated among government officials and decision makers. Where necessary, the materials were translated into English from their original language. No U.S. papers or broadcasts are included in this database. (Cited description, Readex 2021)

Abstract: "FUTURE/PRESENT brings together a vast collection of writers, artists, activists, and academics working at the forefront of today's most pressing struggles for cultural equity and racial justice in a demographically changing America. The volume builds upon five years of national organizing by Arts in a Changing America, an artist-led initiative that challenges structural racism by centering people of color who are leading innovation at the nexus of arts production, community benefit, and social change. FUTURE/PRESENT includes a range of essays and criticism, visual and performance art, artist manifestos, interviews, poetry, and reflections on community practice. Throughout, contributors examine issues of placekeeping and belonging, migration and diasporas, the carceral state, renegotiating relationships with land, ancestral knowledge as radical futurity, and shifting paradigms of inequity. Foregrounding the powerful resilience of communities of color, FUTURE/PRESENT advances the role of artists as first responders to injustices, creative stewards in the cohesion and health of communities, and innovative strategists for equity. Selected contributors. adrienne maree brown, Dahlak Brathwaite, Jeff Chang, Tameca Cole, Ofelia Esparza, Antoine Hunter, Nobuko Miyamoto, Wendy Red Star, Spel, Jose Antonio Vargas, Carrie Mae Weems, Hinaleimoana Kwai Kong Wong-Kalu"--

Abstract: During his four years as the tenth Chancellor of Berkeley (2013-17), Nicholas B. Dirks was confronted by crises arguably more challenging than those faced by any other college administrator in the contemporary period. This thoughtfully candid book, emerging from deep reflection on his turbulent time in office, offers not just a gripping insider's account of the febrile politics of his time as Berkeley's leader, but also decades of nuanced reflection on the university's true meaning (at its best, to be an aspirational 'city of intellect'). Dirks wrestles with some of the most urgent questions with which educational leaders are presently having to engage: including topics such as free speech and campus safe spaces, the humanities' contested future, and the real cost and value of liberal arts learning. His visionary intervention - part autobiography, part practical manifesto - is a passionate cri de cœur for structural changes in higher education that are both significant and profound.

Abstract: "White supremacy and American style individual autonomy are mutually supportive and co-dependent. Attacking white racism will not dislodge white supremacy, which the author contends is the greatest danger facing America. That can only be accomplished by making concurrent and significant modifications in American style individualism. Yet, white supremacist thinking, feeling and acting and American individualism are protected by what the author describes as The White Supremacist Collective Unconscious, a culturally determined mental construct that Americans assimilate as they grow into adulthood, which endows all Americans, regardless of race, with a white supremacist mental orientation to one degree or another. Drawing on his personal experiences as an African American growing up in the United States, and on his research, the author details the development and workings of that unconscious, and the impact of white supremacy on the national character"--

Abstract: This book examines key moments in which collective and state violence invigorated racialized social boundaries around Mexican and African Americans in the United States, and in which they violently contested them. Bringing anti-Mexican violence into a common analytical framework with anti-black violence, A savage song examines several focal points in this oft-ignored history, including the 1915 rebellion of ethnic Mexicans in South Texas, and its brutal repression by the Texas Rangers and the 1917 mutiny of black soldiers of the 24th Infantry Regiment in Houston, Texas, in response to police brutality.Aragon considers both the continuities and stark contrasts across these different moments: how were racialized constructions of masculinity differently employed? How did African and Mexican American men, including those in uniform, respond to the violence of racism? And how was their resistance, including their claims to manhood and nation, understood by law enforcement, politicians, and the press?Building on extensive archival research, the book examines how African and Mexican American men have been constructed as racial problems , investigating, in particular, their relationship with law enforcement and ideas about black and Mexican criminality

Abstract: This volume examines some of the major challenges and opportunities for Europe in the light of the intensifying US-China global strategic rivalry. In doing so, the book investigates European roles and behavior in the contemporary US-China-Europe triangular relationship. While the book's focus is on Europe, the contributors originate from, or are based in, the US and China, thus presenting a unique outside-in perspective to the analysis of European conduct in the areas of security, geo-politics, geo-economics, global governance, development, and climate change. Each area is investigated by one American and one Chinese scholar, respectively, presenting the different views held on Europe’s behavior and positioning in the US and China. In addition to providing critical assessments of Europe’s roles and performance as seen through the prism of their respective country, contributors also pose concrete policy recommendations for Europe. The book will appeal to students, scholars, and researchers of political science and international relations, as well as policy-makers interested in a better understanding of Europe's role in the US-China rivalry and its relationship to the two countries.

Abstract: This book tells the story of how innovative and rival practitioner communities have shaped American diplomacy’s public dimension. It is the fi rst book to frame U.S. public diplomacy in the broad sweep of American diplomatic practice from the early colonial period to the present. “…not only original but also potentially fi eld shifting. This is not simply another good book on American public diplomacy: it will be the book on American public diplomacy.” —Professor Geoffrey Wiseman, DePaul University, U.S.A “American Diplomacy’s Public Dimension, a masterful historical overview of American diplomatic communication, provides fi rst-time insight into the evolution of U.S. public diplomacy from the colonial era to the present day. This book also offers a nuanced assessment of contemporary public diplomacy practices in the face of rapid technological transformation and increasingly ‘societized’ diplomatic engagement. An exceptional blend of public diplomacy scholarship and deep institutional knowledge, this major work will appeal to diplomatic practitioners, professors, and policymakers.” — Vivian S. Walker, Executive Director, U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy “Gregory thinks like an academic while seeing public diplomacy through the lens of the work of the men and women who have put fl esh on the bones of U.S. public diplomacy policies… This book is steeped in deep knowledge and his exceptional dedication to getting our understanding of public diplomacy right.” —Professor Jan Melissen, Editor-in-Chief, The Hague Journal of Diplomacy Bruce Gregory taught graduate and undergraduate courses on public diplomacy at Georgetown University and George Washington University for 17 years. Prior to that, his 33-year government career included positions at the Department of State, U.S. Information Agency, 13 years as executive director of the U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy, and three years on the faculty of the National War College. Publications include peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, public policy reports, and a bimonthly literature review. P.

Abstract: "This edited collection sheds light on how the pandemic has exacerbated pre-existing social issues, and it stresses the importance of understanding, analyzing, and critiquing law and policy decisions during times of crisis. Specifically, it brings together a diverse array of scholarly work that highlights various legal and policy-related topics, including litigations, zoombombing, international students' experiences, violence against women, sex workers' health, governmental crisis responses, neo-vagrancy laws, and educational issues. The collection offers multi-disciplinary scholarly insights, preliminary research findings, legal and public policy analysis, and educational guidelines to address unprecedented socio-legal and psychological impacts on society that have evolved since the onset of the pandemic. Further, these chapters add to the ongoing dialogue about how North American society can improve by exploring dilemmas and highlighting opportunities for positive change. Thus, this collection sheds light on how vulnerable communities have been disproportionately impacted by governments' policies and laws since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it aims to give a different perspective on how we can move forward and use these occurring issues to create more justice in a post-COVID society"--

Abstract: This collection of 80 dramatic firsthand writings by Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, and others brings to life the struggle for racial justice from the Civil War to World War. A vital resource for the teaching of the history of race in America that traces the ascendancy of white supremacy after Reconstruction--and the outspoken resistance to it led by Black Americans and their allies. W.E.B. Du Bois famously identified "the problem of the color-line" as the defining issue in American life. The powerful writings gathered here reveal the many ways Americans, Black and white, fought against white supremacist efforts to police the color line, envisioning a better America in the face of disenfranchisement, segregation, and widespread lynching, mob violence, and police brutality
Abstract: "Jim Crow: Part One, Reconstruction to the Red Summer brings together speeches, pamphlets, newspaper and magazine articles, public testimony and appeals, judicial opinions, letters, and poems and song lyrics from the end of Reconstruction in 1877 to the bloody "Red Summer" of 1919. These writings record and illuminate the ways Americans, Black and white, fought against white supremacy and envisioned a better America in the face of disenfranchisement, segregation, and widespread lynching, mob violence, and police brutality. The volume includes writing by both famous and lesser known individuals, including Ida B. Wells on the myths of lynching, Richard T. Greener's scathing critique of America's "White Problem," Charles Chesnutt on the nullification of the Fifteenth Amendment, Booker T. Washington's historic Atlanta address, John Marshall Harlan's eloquent and prophetic dissent in Plessy v. Ferguson, Robert Smalls's protest against disenfranchisement in South Carolina, Mary Church Terrell on segregation in the nation's capital and the convict lease system, William Monroe Trotter's dramatic White House confrontation with Woodrow Wilson, and Jeanette Carter's tribute to the men and women who fought back white mobs in 1919. The volume also presents revealing examples of white supremacist advocacy by Nathaniel Shaler and Benjamin Tillman; testimony about the "Exoduster" migration to Kansas in the 1870s; celebrations of path-breaking Black musicians and stage performers; writing about the Wilmington insurrection of 1898, the founding of the NAACP, and Black soldiers in World War I; and contrasting editorials from the Black and white press on prizefighter Jack Johnson and the outlaw Robert Charles"-- Provided by publisher

Abstract: "Arguing Identity and Human Rights poses open questions about how to best argue for human rights and consider rival answers, to help us think through the advantages and trade-offs of different rhetorical strategies, identify options, and, ultimately, choose our own paths. Modelling a humane approach to human rights argument, the book offers four deep rhetorical analyses of some of the most vexing and fascinating challenges facing human rights arguers in the United States: - How do we want to frame difference in human rights advocacy-are we trying to downplay difference or something else? - How can we best answer dismissive responses to human rights arguments? - Should we portray people in marginalized categories as having "no choice" about their identity, and what would alternatives look like? - What are the possibilities and perils of trying to "afflict" audiences with hegemonic identities to persuade them on human rights issues? Offering clear practical and theoretical implications while resisting easy answers, the book provides a concise introduction to the relationship between identity, discourse, and social change. Designed for both theorists and practitioners, for current and aspiring human rights arguers, this insightful text will be of use to students of rhetoric, argumentation, persuasion, and communication studies more generally, as well as human rights, social activism and social change, political science, sociology, race and gender studies

Abstract: FUTURE/PRESENT brings together a vast collection of writers, artists, activists, and academics working at the forefront of today's most pressing struggles for cultural equity and racial justice in a demographically changing America. Abstract: "This book is certainly useful for historians, as well as economists, sociologists and demographers. Nonetheless, policy makers and all the organizations (including non-profits) dealing with and managing human migration will find this work helpful." - Giovanni Gregorini, Professor, Faculty of Linguistic Sciences and Foreign Literatures and Chair, Department of History and Philology, Italy. This edited collection sheds light on the complex nature of migratory movements through the lens of economic and social history. It addresses a variety of migration issues involving Europe and the Americas in order to offer new insights on past and future migration and integration policies. The volume comprises multi-disciplinary research from both continents dealing with the economic, political, demographical and sociological impact of migration. This interdisciplinary approach aims to stimulate intellectual dialogue on the migration phenomenon among the international community of scholars in Europe and North and South America. It is divided into three parts, which offer an essential contribution to the issue of migration and aim at better understanding the effect that different forms of migration have had and will continue to exert on economic and social change in receiving countries. This book is a valuable resource for a wide audience including academics, students in the economic and social sciences, and government and EU officials working with migration topics. Francesca Fauri teaches Economic History at the Department of Economics of the University of Bologna. Her main research interests concern the history of European economic integration, local business history, Italy’s aviation history and Italian and European migration movements. Debora Mantovani teaches Sociology of Inequality at the Department of Political and Social Science of the University of Bologna. Her main research interests include the sociology of migration and education and primarily focus on children of immigrants’ school integration.

Abstract: This book examines the impact of artificial intelligence on competition and antitrust in today's global digital economy. It scrutinizes the economic and legal ramifications of Artificial Intelligence (AI), addressing the challenges it presents to competition and the law. Beginning with an analysis of AI's developments across various economic sectors, the book highlights the need for updated legislation. It focuses on the digital economy, emphasizing digital platforms' role in shaping competition. Econometric investigations and a novel index assess competition's influence on foreign direct investment and multinational enterprises. Comparing competition practices across jurisdictions like the EU, US, Germany, and China, the book uncovers commonalities and differences in competition law principles. It also explores various theories on competition and competition law, seeking convergence or divergence. This book is an essential resource for scholars, legal professionals, policymakers, and anyone seeking a better understanding of how AI is reshaping competition and antitrust in the digital age.

Abstract: The aging of America will reshape how we live and will transform nearly every aspect of contemporary society. Renowned life course sociologist Deborah Carr provides a lively, nuanced, and timely portrait of aging in the United States. The US population is older than ever before, raising new challenges for families, caregivers, health care systems, and social programs like Social Security and Medicare. Organized in seven chapters, Aging in America covers these topics: the history of aging and the development of theoretical approaches how cultural changes shape our views on aging the demographic characteristics of older adults today older adults' family lives and social relationships the health of older adults and social disparities in who gets sick how public policies affect the well-being of older adults and their families how baby boomers, Gen Xers, and millennials will experience old age Drawing on state-of-the-art data, current events, and pop culture, this portrait of an aging population challenges outdated myths and vividly shows how future cohorts of older adults will differ from the generations before them.

Abstract: This stunning exhibition catalog visualizes what freedom looks like for Black Americans today and the legacy of the Civil War in 2023 and beyond. Emancipation: The Unfinished Project of Liberation sits at the intersection of history and contemporary life. Building upon in-depth conversations about representations of enslavement and emancipation at the close of the Civil War, this project originates from an analysis of sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward's The Freedman (1863), one of the first bronze representations of a Black person in the United States, and expands into an investigation of how living artists envision emancipation, freedom, and liberation today. Featuring interviews with artists Sadie Barnette, Alfred Conteh, Maya Freelon, Hugh Hayden, Letitia Huckaby, Jeffrey Meris, and Sable Elyse Smith, the exhibition catalog explores their practices along with cutting-edge scholarship by Kirsten Pai Buick and Kelvin Parnell, among others, as well as a haunting story of embodiment and exploitation by celebrated science-fiction author N. K. Jemisin. Burdened by failed promises but buoyed by hope, this project is mournful and melancholy yet also reflective and celebratory in its aspirations for a brighter future. Abstract: "Tonight, across America, countless people will embark on an adventure. They will prowl among overgrown headstones in forgotten graveyards, stalk through darkened woods and wildlands, and creep down the crumbling corridors of abandoned buildings. They have set forth in search of a profound paranormal experience and may seem to achieve just that. They are part of the growing cultural phenomenon called legend tripping. In If You Should Go at Midnight: Legends and Legend Tripping in America, author Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl guides readers through an exploration of legend tripping, drawing on years of scholarship, documentary accounts, and his own extensive fieldwork. Poring over old reports and legends, sleeping in haunted inns, and trekking through wilderness full of cannibal mutants and strange beasts, Debies-Carl provides an in-depth analysis of this practice that has long fascinated scholars yet remains a mystery to many observers. Debies-Carl argues that legend trips are important social practices. Unlike traditional rites of passage, they reflect the modern world, revealing both its problems and its virtues. In society as well as in legend tripping, there is ambiguity, conflict, crisis of meaning, and the substitution of debate for social consensus. Conversely, both emphasize individual agency and values, even in spiritual matters. While people still need meaningful and transformative experiences, authoritative, traditional institutions are less capable of providing them. Instead, legend trippers voluntarily search for individually meaningful experiences and actively participate in shaping and interpreting those experiences for themselves"--

Abstract: Racism is once again an issue in Germany. Few studies have addressed the changing manifestations of racism in West Germany and in post-1990 Germany. The essays in this collection trace an arc of continuity from post-1945 völkisch ideology to the beginnings of right-wing terrorism, to the consequences of legislation concerning foreigners, and to issues of identity politics.

Abstract: "In this study the author examines how, in the Civil War-era South, newly freed African Americans used their experiences with death from war, disease, and racial violence to advance their own understanding of the meaning of freedom and to stake claims to citizenship, civil rights, and racial justice from the federal government"--
Abstract: This innovative book examines how African Americans in the South made sense of the devastating loss of life unleashed by the Civil War and emancipation. During and after the war, African Americans died in vast numbers from battle, disease, and racial violence. While freedom was a momentous event for the formerly enslaved, it was also deadly. Through an investigation into how African Americans reacted to and coped with the passing away of loved ones and community members, Ashley Towle argues that freedpeople gave credence to their free status through their experiences with mortality. African Americans harnessed the power of death in a variety of arenas, including within the walls of national and private civilian cemeteries, in applications for widows' pensions, in the pulpits of black churches, around seance tables, on the witness stand at congressional hearings, and in the columns of African American newspapers. In the process of mourning the demise of kith and kin, black people reconstituted their families, forged communal bonds, and staked claims to citizenship, civil rights, and racial justice from the federal government. In a society upended by civil war and emancipation, death was political

Abstract: An incisive look at Hmong religion in the United States, where resettled refugees found creative ways to maintain their traditions, even as Christian organizations deputized by the government were granted an outsized influence on the refugees' new lives.Every year, members of the Hmong Christian Church of God in Minneapolis gather for a cherished Thanksgiving celebration. But this Thanksgiving takes place in the spring, in remembrance of the turbulent days in May 1975 when thousands of Laotians were evacuated for resettlement in the United States. For many Hmong, passage to America was also a spiritual crossing. As they found novel approaches to living, they also embraced Christianity-called kev cai tshiab, "the new way"-as a means of navigating their complex spiritual landscapes.Melissa May Borja explores how this religious change happened and what it has meant for Hmong culture. American resettlement policies unintentionally deprived Hmong of the resources necessary for their time-honored rituals, in part because these practices, blending animism, ancestor worship, and shamanism, challenged many Christian-centric definitions of religion. At the same time, because the government delegated much of the resettlement work to Christian organizations, refugees developed close and dependent relationships with Christian groups. Ultimately the Hmong embraced Christianity on their own terms, adjusting to American spiritual life while finding opportunities to preserve their customs.Follow the New Way illustrates America's wavering commitments to pluralism and secularism, offering a much-needed investigation into the public work done by religious institutions with the blessing of the state. But in the creation of a Christian-inflected Hmong American animism we see the resilience of tradition-how it deepens under transformative conditions

Abstract: "Celebrities in the United States have drawn significant attention and resources to the complex issue of human trafficking-a subject of feminist concern-and they are often criticized for promoting sensationalized and simplistic understandings of the issue. In this comprehensive analysis of celebrities' anti-trafficking activism, however, Samantha Majic finds that this phenomenon is more nuanced: even as some celebrities promote regressive issue narratives and carceral solutions, others use their platforms to elevate more diverse representations of human trafficking and feminist analyses of gender inequality. Lights, Camera, Feminism? thus argues that we should understand celebrities as multilevel political actors whose activism is shaped and mediated by a range of personal and contextual factors, with implications for feminist and democratic politics more broadly"--
