    Abstract: In der Bundesrepublik wurde eine längere Phase des Desinteresses, wenn nicht gar der Tabuisierung bereits im Laufe der achtziger Jahre durch neue wissenschaftliche Anstrengungen durchbrochen, die insbesondere den westdeutschen Gründungs-"Mythos der schnellen Integration" zu differenzieren trachteten. Ebenso kam es zu Versuchen der Geschichtswissenschaft der DDR, die totalitäre Form der Tabuisierung der "Umsiedler"-Integration aufzulockern, wobei man jedoch bis 1989 zwangsläufig den SED-Mythos schneller und erfolgreicher Integration unbedingt verpflichtet blieb. In diesem Band werden die Ergebnisse der Forschungen zu dieser wichtigen Nachkriegsproblematik zusammengefasst.

    Abstract: Unlike political or economic institutions, social movements have an elusive power, but one that is no less real. From the French and American revolutions through the democratic and workers' movements of the nineteenth century to the totalitarian movements of today, movements exercise a fleeting but powerful influence on politics and society. This study surveys the history of the social movement, puts forward a theory of collective action to explain its surges and declines, and offers an interpretation of the power of movement that emphasises its effects on personal lives, policy reforms and political culture. While covering cultural, organisational and personal sources of movements' power, the book emphasises the rise and fall of social movements as part of political struggle and as the outcome of changes in political opportunity structure

    Abstract: The twelve million Muslims living in western and eastern (non-CIS) Europe are confronted with the combined, localised effects of xenophobia, nationalism, an historical stigma attached to Islam and a contemporary fear of the 'global Islamic threat'.     Abstract: This wide-ranging study focuses upon the controversies surrounding the meaning and significance of Social Darwinism. It clarifies the nature of Social Darwinism and its relationship to the ideas of Darwin, Lamarck and Herbert Spencer. After examining the development of Social Darwinist theories by a number of European and American thinkers, Mike Hawkins explores the use of these theories in a number of ideological debates and movements of the period 1860–1945. These include socio-political reform, national and racial conflict, eugenics, the position of women and Nazism/Fascism. The aim is to illuminate, through detailed comparative analyses, both the flexibility and the limits of Social Darwinism - limits which derive from the view of nature which lies at the very heart of Social Darwinism. The study concludes with a discussion of modern sociobiology in order to assess the continuing vitality of Social Darwinism

    Abstract: At once historically and theoretically informed, these essays invite the reader to think of religion dynamically, reconsidering American religious history in terms of practices that are linked to specific social contexts. The point of departure is the concept of "lived religion." Discussing such topics as gift exchange, cremation, hymn-singing, and women's spirituality, a group of leading sociologists and historians of religion explore the many facets of how people carry out their religious beliefs on a daily basis. As David Hall notes in his introduction, a history of practices "encompasses the tensions, the ongoing struggle of definition, that are constituted within every religious tradition and that are always present in how people choose to act. Practice thus suggests that any synthesis is provisional." The volume opens with two essays by Robert Orsi and Danièle Hervieu-Léger that offer an overview of the rapidly growing study of lived religion, with Hervieu-Léger using the Catholic charismatic renewal movement in France as a window through which to explore the coexistence of regulation and spontaneity within religious practice. Anne S. Brown and David D. Hall examine family strategies and church membership in early New England. Leigh Eric Schmidt looks at the complex meanings of gift-giving in America. Stephen Prothero writes about the cremation movement in the late nineteenth century. In an essay on the narrative structure of Mrs. Cowman's Streams in the Desert, Cheryl Forbes considers the devotional lives of everyday women. Michael McNally uses the practice of hymn-singing among the Ojibwa to reexamine the categories of native and Christian religion.     Abstract: This extensive survey of migration in the modern world begins in the sixteenth century with the establishment of European colonies overseas, and covers the history of migration to the late twentieth century, when global communications and transport systems stimulated immense and complex flows of labour migrants and skilled professionals. In ninety-five contributions, leading scholars from twenty-seven different countries consider a wide variety of issues including migration patterns, the flights of refugees and illegal migration. Each entry is a substantive essay, supported by up-to-date bibliographies, tables, plates, maps and figures.     Abstract: Das Thema ›Nation‹ hat die Historiker eine Zeitlang wenig beschäftigt. Der unversehens in vielen Ländern erneut höchst lebendige Nationalismus ist jedoch eine Herausforderung auch für die Wissenschaft. Ihr Interesse für die Nation und das Nationale ist wieder erwacht, aber sie geht an die Problematik anders heran als früher: mit einem historisch wie aktuell geschärften Blick und mit neuen Fragestellungen. Nach Politik- und Ideengeschichte haben zuletzt sozialgeschichtliche Untersuchungen die Diskussion über Nation und Nationalismus vorangebracht. Erforscht wurde der Nationalismus als soziales Phänomen moderner Gesellschaften; zumindest im Hintergrund haben dabei meistens auch Nationalgefühl und nationale Empfindungen eine Rolle gespielt.Die Beiträge dieses Bandes erfassen den Zusammenhang von Nation und Emotion indessen auf neuartige Weise. Zentral ist die Vergegenwärtigung des Nationalen in nationalen Mythen, Symbolen, Ritualen. Wie haben sie nationale Emotionen erzeugt oder verstärkt? Und wie deren Ausleben geformt und reguliert? Mehr als das: Wie weit haben nationale Mythen, Geschichtsbilder, Erinnerungen daran mitgewirkt, Empfindungen wie Trauer und Hoffnung zu definieren und zu steuern? In welchem Maße haben Gefühle wie Liebe und Haß in Verbindung mit Nationalismus und Nation eine andere Intensität, eine andere Richtung bekommen? Es geht natürlich auch um das schwer faßbare »Nationalgefühl«, doch ist das Interesse umfassender. Im Blick steht das vielfältige und vielschichtige Beziehungsgeflecht von Nation und Emotion, das zugleich über sich hinausweist auf die allgemeine Frage der Geschichtlichkeit und kulturellen Relativität von Emotionen.Studien über Nationalismus und das Nationale beschränken sich fast immer auf eine Nation.
