Abstract: This volume analyses civil society as an important factor in the European refugee regime. Based on empirical research, the chapters explore different aspects, structures and forms of civil society engagement during and after 2015. Various institutional, collective and individual activities are examined in order to better understand the related processes of refugees’ movements, reception and integration. Several chapters also explore the historical development of the relationship between a range of actors involved in solidarity movements and care relationships with refugees across different member states. Through the combined analysis of macro-level state and European policies, meso-level organization's activities and micro-level individual behaviour, Refugee Protection and Civil Society in Europe presents a comprehensive exploration of the refugee regime in motion, and will be of interest to scholars and students researching migration, social movements, European institutions and social work.
Abstract: The federal and civic organizations concerned with refugee protection and asylum have played an important part in the Mediterranean region for decades when it comes to taking in people seeking protection. However, they have hardly been scientifically examined yet - and neither have their cooperation networks. The contributions of this volume close that gap in research and show which organizations in Greece, Italy, Malta, Spain and Cyprus are active, how they work and what they can contribute to the reception and integration of persons seeking protection

Abstract: Der Herbst 2015 setzte eine Zäsur in Deutschland.

Abstract: Sexual orientation and gender identity are separate, distinct parts of people's overall identity. Equality and freedom from discrimination are human rights belonging to all people, however, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, gender diverse and intersex (LGBTI) people experience harassment and hostility in many areas of everyday life. Under recently enacted Australian law it is illegal to discriminate against a person on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex status. Same-sex couples are now also protected from discrimination under the definition of "marital or relationship status". This book explores issues involving sexual orientation, gender diversity and intersex status; and explains what equality means for people who are often subjected to misunderstanding and homophobia

Abstract: The rapid uptake of digital technologies has hugely impacted on the way we communicate, relate, learn, work, and spend our leisure time. Digital media literacy is the ability to access, understand and participate or create content using digital media. This ability is becoming integral to effective participation in the digital economy and Australian society. Those who do not adapt may fall victim to the 'digital divide' and be excluded. The 'digital revolution' has both positive and negative effects, which are explored in this timely book. On the positive side, people are increasingly being connected across distances with the greatest of ease and innovation via mobile phones, online social networking, blogging, gaming and e-learning. On the negative side are a range of social impacts that are also explored in this book, including internet addiction, cyberbullying, inappropriate exposure to pornography, privacy risks, and cyber crime. Three chapters: Digital media trends and participation; Social media; and Online safety. Also includes: Worksheets and activities ; Fast facts ; Glossary ; Web links ; Index.

Abstract: Sexual orientation and gender identity are separate, distinct parts of people's overall identity. Equality and freedom from discrimination are human rights belonging to all people, however, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, gender diverse and intersex (LGBTI) people experience hostility in many areas of everyday life. This book explores issues involving sexual orientation, gender diversity and intersex status; and explains what equality means for people who are subjected to misunderstanding and homophobia. Abstract: Australians of all ages have a human right to be treated fairly and have the same opportunities as everyone else. In spite of such rights, age discrimination still occurs widely in Australia. People are often treated unfavourably because of their age, or because of assumptions made about people of that age. Common examples of age discrimination include preferring to hire younger over older workers regardless of their competence, refusing to consider job applications from people over pension age, or sacking younger workers once they reach the age when adult wages will apply. There needs to be a...

Abstract: Same-sex marriages are currently not permitted under Australian federal law. Although same-sex couples in de facto relationships have had most of the legal rights of married couples since July 2009, there is however no national registered partnership or civil union scheme. Public opinion polls in Australia consistently show majority support for same-sex marriage, yet political and legal opposition to it has stymied a number of recent attempts at state and federal level to legislate for 'marriage equality', which would require amending the federal Marriage Act. Abstract: This book analyzes the aims, activities and structures of cross border migrant organizations in four European countries of arrival and seven countries of origin, exploring different patterns of cross-border resource mobilization and coordination, Do cross-border migrant organizations challenge integration in countries of arrival? Are they a risk for national sovereignty or an opportunity for connecting migration and development in countries of origin? This book analyzes the aims, activities and structures of such organizations in four European countries of arrival (Germany, Poland, Spain and the UK) and seven countries of origin (Ecuador, India, Morocco, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine, Vietnam). Integrating organizational research and migration studies, the book examines different patterns of cross-border resource mobilization and coordination and explores the pressure they put nation states under and how they define new issues and actors that are often neglected or overlooked by states and national societies

Abstract: There are many types of behaviours that are considered to be deliberate self-harm (or self-injury), and young people harm themselves for different reasons. Non-fatal, self-injuring behaviours such as self-cutting, self-poisoning, self-burning and even attempted suicide are common but often hidden responses to emotional pain, and are attempts to relieve, control or express distressing feelings. This book explores the prevalence of self-harm, identifies the warning signs, and addresses the many myths and misconceptions. Advice is also presented on how to deal with these behaviours for people who self-harm and their concerned friends and families. What are the causes of self-harm, who is at risk, and what are the ways in which young people in distress can find support in order to cope with their feelings? What are the possible links with mental illness or thoughts of suicide? How do you keep out of self-harm's way? Also includes: Worksheets and activities ; Fast facts ; Glossary ; Web links ; Index.

On the positive side, people are increasingly being con

There needs to be a

Abstract: Chapter 1 -- Health status of Indigenous Australians -- Chapter 2 -- Closing the gap in Indigenous health -- Exploring issues -- worksheets and activities -- Index.
Abstract: Since 2006, the 'closing the gap' campaign has been pursued in collaboration between government and health, welfare and rights agencies to close the health and life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians within a generation. The health disadvantages experienced by Indigenous Australians are shaped by history and the broader social and economic conditions in which they live; progress has been slow and mixed. This book evaluates the uneven progress being made towards closing the gap. How can Indigenous outcomes be improved across a range of key social and economic determinants of health and wellbeing? Also includes: worksheets and activities, fast facts, glossary, web links, index. Titles in the Issues in Society series are individual resource books which provide an overview on a specific subject comprised of facts and opinions. The information in this resource book is not from any single author, publication or organisation. The unique value of the Issues in Society series lies in its diversity of content and perspectives.
