Meanwhile, vast amounts of data about the movement of people are being generated in real time due to new technologies, but these have not yet been fully captured and utilized by migration policymakers, who often do not have enough data to inform their policies and programmes. The lack of migration data has been internationally recognized; the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration urges all countries to improve data on migration to ensure that policies and programmes are evidence-based, but does not spell out how this could be done. This book examines both the technical issues associated with improving data on migration and the wider political challenges of how countries manage the collection and use of migration data. The first part of the book discusses how much we really know about international migration based on existing data, and key concepts and approaches which are often used to measure migration. The second part of the book examines what measures could be taken to improve migration data, highlighting examples of good practice from around the world in recent years, across a range of different policy areas, such as health, climate change and sustainable development more broadly. Written by leading experts on international migration data, this book is the perfect guide for students, policymakers and practitioners looking to understand more about the existing evidence base on migration and what can be done to improve it

Abstract: The presence of Africans in the German Democratic Republic is very rarely thought of in connection with the experience of exile. Instead, Africans in the GDR are predominantly viewed through the prism of educational and labor migration. While such research has undoubtedly produced valuable insights, it often fails to adequately account for the implicit Eurocentrism, methodological nationalism, and anti-communist bias inherent in Western knowledge production. This study offers a different approach. Through biographical portrayal, it unfolds the life stories of African freedom fighters who lived in exile in the GDR and, ultimately, remained in reunified Germany, with the main case study being a Malawian activist who was expelled from East to West Berlin. Recounting his experiences along with those of some South African exiles, chief among them a former medical worker for the ANC’s armed wing, the study ethnographically reconstructs the multiple entanglements between the “Second” and “Third” worlds from the vantage point of the politically displaced within the concrete historical contexts of African decolonization, the struggle against the Malawian Banda dictatorship, and the struggle against South African apartheid.

Abstract: Elektronische Tanzmusik gehört heute zu den wichtigsten (Meta-)Genres populärer Musik. Darin spielt das Konzept der „Liveness“ eine zentrale Rolle, die gleichzeitig aber kaum beforscht ist – und dies, obwohl in Performances von Techno Liveness in technologische, soziale und kulturelle Bedingungen eingebettet ist, die die damit assoziierten Bedeutungen besonders unklar machen. Liveness bezieht sich traditionell auf die Performance von Musik in Echtzeit mittels Musikinstrumenten in Abgrenzung zu Aufnahmen. Welche Bedeutung wird Liveness aber zugeschrieben, wenn sich Performances aus der Präsentation aufgezeichneter Musik konstituieren, die zudem keinem instrumentalen Paradigma mehr folgen? Während Liveness bisher eher als Erfahrung und Qualität von Performances untersucht wurde, erschließt der Beitrag Bedeutungen von Liveness als performative Praxis aus Sicht ausübender DJs, Liveacts, Techno-Bands und Techno-Orchester, die in ihren Interaktionen mit Setups, Artefakten und Publika mit unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen von Liveness assoziiert werden. Deutlich wird, dass Musiker*innen sich zuvor einen Rahmen setzen (müssen), innerhalb dessen sie dann als bedeutsam empfundene Dimensionen von Liveness materialisieren.

In ihnen finden sich metrische und harmonisch-melodische Konzepte sowie grundlegende Neuerungen in der Organisation des Zusammenspiels und im Umgang mit improvisierter Musik, die heute fester Bestandteil des Jazz sind. Der Autor geht den Ursprüngen und Vorläufern dieser Konzepte nach, untersucht die biografischen Bezüge der Protagonisten zu den Konzepten und zum Zeitgeist und betrachtet die Rezeptionsgeschichte der Alben.

Abstract: The year 1959 saw the release of Dave Brubeck's "Time Out", John Coltrane's "Giant Steps", Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue", Bill Evans' "Portrait in Jazz" and Ornette Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz to Come", all style-defining albums that were groundbreaking in the development of jazz. They contain metrical and harmonic-melodic concepts as well as fundamental innovations in the organisation of ensemble playing and the handling of improvised music, which are an integral part of jazz today. The author traces the origins and antecedents of these concepts, examines the protagonists' biographical references to the concepts and the zeitgeist, and looks at the reception history of the albums.

Yet while heritage and place are at risk from disasters, in time,sites of suffering are sometimes reframed as sites of memory; through this different lens these "difficult" places become heritage sites that attract tourists. Ranging widely chronologically and geographically, the contributors explore the impact of disasters, trauma and suffering on heritage and sense of place, in both theory and practice

Grillmeier bewegt sich in Moria, in der Hafenstadt, im Norden der Insel und reist an weitere europäische Grenzorte, an denen die Systematik der Ausgrenzung ähnlich funktioniert. Im Mittelpunkt des Buches stehen die Geflüchteten selbst, die in zahllosen Gesprächen zu Wort kommen und deren Lebenswege erzählt werden. Die Autorin zeigt, was das Lagerleben mit einem Menschen macht - und reflektiert zugleich, wie das Inselleben auf sie selbst zurückwirkt: Während Grillmeier als Beobachterin aus freien Stücken kommen und gehen kann, endet dort für die Geflüchteten die Erzählung des offenen Europas. Auch die Kriminalisierung der humanitären Hilfe, der Abbau der Pressefreiheit, die Überlastung der Inselbewohner:innen und der Zynismus der Politik in Brüssel und Athen spielen eine zentrale Rolle. „2018 zog die Journalistin Franziska Grillmeier nach Lesbos – auf jene Insel, auf der sich das damals größte Fluchtlager des Kontinents befand: Moria. Schon bald stellte sie fest, dass Menschenrechtsverletzungen an den Rändern Europas zum Alltag gehören. Abstract: Wer von Erbe im Zusammenhang mit Identität spricht, verspricht sich und Anderen "Kontinuität" und "Stabilität". Das Versprechen hält indes nur so lange, wie sich Menschen auf die damit verbundenen Erzählungen einlassen. Da diese zunehmend hinterfragt werden und der Begriff "Identität" im politischen Raum zu einer umkämpften Kategorie avanciert ist, werden auch die lange gehegten, gewohnten "Konstruktionen" instabil. Dies zeigt sich insbesondere in Momenten des Konflikts, der übergriffigen Inanspruchnahme und des Verlusts. Der Titel "Instabile Konstruktionen" verweist zugleich auf die beiden Kernbereiche des Kollegs: einerseits auf Architektur und Denkmalpflege, in denen der Begriff Konstruktion sich auf bauliche Manifestationen bezieht, von denen eine gewisse Haltbarkeit und Dauerhaftigkeit erwartet wird und andererseits auf die Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften, wo Konstruktion die soziale Herstellung symbolischer Sinnwelten meint. Ins Zentrum rückt so der Anspruch, die materielle Umwelt im Wechselverhältnis zu ihrer sozialen Gemachtheit zu verstehen.

Kathrine van den Bogert traces the experiences of teenage girls who play football in the public playgrounds in their neighbourhood, as well as in a girls' football competition the girls have set up themselves: Football Girls United. She addresses how race, ethnicity, religion, and gender are entangled in the access to and construction of the public street football spaces, such as football courts, urban playgrounds, and public squares. While often Muslim girls in football are stigmatised or excluded based on their religious and ethnic backgrounds, this book emphasises their street football practices as critical and creative ways of inclusion and belonging, both in football and in wider Dutch society. Abstract: Was motiviert ältere Menschen, sich ehrenamtlich in Institutionen in ihrem Stadtteil zu engagieren? Warum helfen andere informell in der Nachbarschaft oder dem Freundeskreis? Ausgehend von diesen Fragen beleuchtet Vera Miesen die Vielfalt des Engagements mit einem habitustheoretischen Zugang und eröffnet damit eine neue Perspektive für die Engagementforschung. Auf Grundlage themenzentrierter Interviews und strukturierter Sozialraumtagebücher rekonstruiert sie milieuspezifische Engagementmuster und zeigt: Je nach sozialer Herkunft werden spezifische Anliegen über das Engagement zum Ausdruck gebracht. Dabei treffen unterschiedliche Milieus an verschiedenen Orten im Stadtteil aufeinander

Abstract: A study of the modes of predation used by and against the Sanema people of Venezuela. Predation is central to the cosmology and lifeways of the Sanema-speaking Indigenous people of Venezuelan Amazonia, but it also marks their experience of modernity under the socialist "Bolivarian" regime and its immense oil wealth. Yet predation is not simply violence and plunder. For Sanema people, it means a great deal more: enticement, seduction, persuasion. It suggests an imminent threat but also opportunity and even sanctuary. Amy Penfield spent two and a half years in the field, living with and learning from Sanema communities. She discovered that while predation is what we think it is-invading enemies, incursions by gold miners, and unscrupulous state interventions-Sanema are not merely prey. Predation, or appropriation without reciprocity, is essential to their own activities. They use predatory techniques of trickery in hunting and shamanism activities, while at the same time, they employ tactics of manipulation to obtain resources from neighbors and from the state. A richly detailed ethnography, Predatory Economies looks beyond well-worn tropes of activism and resistance to tell a new story of agency from an Indigenous perspective
