Diese stellte sich die Aufgabe, einem Forschungsdesiderat nachzugehen: dem Stellenwert der Fußreise innerhalb der deutschsprachigen Reiseliteratur des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts. Behandelt werden autobiographische und dichterische Texte, die in exemplarischer Weise Auskunft geben über einen Sachverhalt: der in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts einsetzenden sozialen Aufwertung der Reise zu Fuß (und deren Reflexion), die einhergeht mit einer Raumerfahrung, die aus der Sicht des Kutschenreisenden so nicht möglich war. - Ergänzt wird der Band durch eine Quellenbibliographie zu den Fußreisen in dem behandelten Zeitraum , Main description: The volume assembles papers presented at a conference held at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research into the European Enlightenment. The aim of the meeting was to close a conspicuous research gap by looking at the status of journeys on foot in 18th and 19th century travel literature in German. The articles examine autobiographical and literary texts giving representative information on the phenomenon of the new social prestige accorded to journeys on foot (and reflection upon them) identifiable in the second half of the 18th century. Central to this reevaluation was an appreciation of the heightened experience of space and distance denied to coach travelers. The volume closes with a source bibliography of works pertaining to journeys on foot in the period in question

    Kurzfassung: Houses are not just assemblages of individual rooms but intricate patterns of organised space, governed by rules and conventions about the size and configuration of rooms, which domestic activities go together, how the interior should be decorated and furnished and what kinds of household object are appropriate in each setting, how family members relate to one another in different spaces, and how and where guests should be received and entertained in the home. Decoding Homes and Houses introduces new, computer-based techniques designed to retrieve and interpret this wealth of social and symbolic information. The various representations and measures show how domestic space provides a shared framework for everyday life, how social meanings are constructed in the home and how different sub-groups within society differentiate themselves through their patterns of domestic space and lifestyles.

    Kurzfassung: Leading anthropologists and political scientists are brought together in this volume to debate the problem of comparison, taking up a variety of topics from nationalist violence and labour strikes to ritual forms and religious practices. The contributors criticise conventional forms of comparative method, and introduce new comparative strategies, ranging from abstract model building to ethnographically based methods. They represent a wide variety of theoretical positions, from rational choice theory to interpretivism, and the issues are clarified in the cut and thrust of debate. This will be an excellent case book for courses on comparison across the social sciences

    Kurzfassung: 'Culture' and 'meaning' are central to anthropology, but anthropologists do not agree on what they are. Claudia Strauss and Naomi Quinn propose a new theory of cultural meaning, one that gives priority to the way people's experiences are internalized. Drawing on 'connectionist' or 'neural network' models as well as other psychological theories, they argue that cultural meanings are not fixed or limited to static groups, but neither are they constantly revised and contested. Their approach is illustrated by original research on understandings of marriage and ideas of success in the United States

    Kurzfassung: This work provides an account of culture in an age of globalization. Ulf Hannerz argues that, in an ever-more interconnected world, national understandings of culture have become insufficient. He explores the implications of boundary-crossings and long-distance cultural flows for established notions of "the local", "community", "nation" and "modernity" Hannerz not only engages with theoretical debates about culture and globalization but raises issues of how we think and live today. His account of the experience of global culture encompasses a shouting match in a New York street about Salman Rushdie, a papal visit to the Maya Indians; kung-fu dancers in Nigeria and Rastafarians in Amsterdam; the nostalgia of foreign correspondents; and the surprising experiences of tourists in a world city or on a Borneo photo safari.

    Kurzfassung: Die im Jahre 1878 von Richard Wagner gegründeten »Bayreuther Blätter« sind in ihren 61 Jahrgängen als literarisches Zentrum der von Bayreuth ausgehenden Kulturbewegung anzusehen und stellen eine bedeutsame publizistische Quelle des ausgehenden 19. und beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts dar. Neben Ausführungen zur Entstehungs- und Gründungsgeschichte sowie zu Umfang, Aufbau, Konzeption, Adressaten- und Mitarbeiterkreis wird schwerpunktmäßig die Ideologie bildende Funktion der Zeitschrift in Hinblick auf Antisemitismus, Rassismus und Deutschtumsideologie nachgewiesen. Durch ein alphabetisches Verfasserregister und ein systematisches Schlagwortregister werden die »Bayreuther Blätter« zudem bibliographisch und inhaltlich detailliert erschlossen.
    Kurzfassung: The »Bayreuther Blätter« periodical was founded by Richard Wagner in 1878. In the 61 years of its existence, it was the central literary vehicle of the cultural movement emanating from Bayreuth and as such represents a major source of information on mentalities prevalent in Germany in the late 19th and early 20th century. The study traces the origins and foundation of the publication and discusses its scope, design, conception, the audience it addressed itself to, and the contributors who wrote for it. A central focus is the discussion of the ideological role played by the periodical in connection with anti-Semitism, racism and Teutonicism. In addition, an alphabetic index of authors and a systematic index of key-words make the volume into a detailed work of reference on the »Bayreuther Blätter« and a valuable bibliographic resource.
