    Abstract: In Deutschland leben zahlreiche Musiker*innen aus der Türkei, die in ihrem Herkunftsland aus politischen Gründen nicht uneingeschränkt leben und musizieren könnten. Sie verließen die Türkei aufgrund des Militärputsches von 1980, der Diskriminierung ihrer kurdischen und/oder alevitischen Identität oder des gescheiterten Gezi-Protests und erneuter Einschränkungen von Minderheitsgruppierungen im Musikleben. Kirsten Seidlitz untersucht, wie sie von Deutschland aus mit ihrem musikalischen Schaffen politisch kommentieren, inwiefern die deutsche Gesellschaft mit Musik erreicht, aufgeklärt und beeinflusst werden kann, und ob die in Deutschland produzierte Musik zurück in die Türkei gelangt.

It argues that they were iconic, divisive, atypical and prefigurative: themes introduced and illustrated in the preface using contemporary cartoons. Their depiction as icons in the 1964 Daily Mail cartoon contrasted starkly with their first appearance in a Fleet Street cartoon twelve months previously, when theirs was one of a barrage of British records raining down on the Kremlin in a display of soft power. They received minor billing in February 1963 compared to Susan Maughan, Helen Shapiro, Cliff Richard, Adam Faith, Marty Wilde and the Tornados, as befitted a band whose second single (Please Please Me) was competing for the number one spot with Frank Ifield's The Wayward Wind (1963).     Abstract: Though the Beatles are nowadays considered national treasures, this book shows how and why they inspired phobia as well as mania in 1960s Britain. As symbols of modernity in the early sixties, they functioned as a stress test for British institutions and identities, at once displaying the possibilities and establishing the limits of change. Later in the decade, they developed forms of living, loving, thinking, looking, creating, worshipping and campaigning which became subjects of intense controversy. The ambivalent attitudes contemporaries displayed towards the Beatles are not captured in hackneyed ideas of the 'swinging sixties', the 'permissive society' and the all-conquering 'Fab Four'. Drawing upon a wealth of contemporary sources, The Beatles and Sixties Britain offers a new understanding of the band as existing in creative tension with postwar British society: their disruptive presence inciting a wholesale re-examination of social, political and cultural norms

    Abstract: Music has long been an avenue for protest, seen as a way to promote freedom and equality, instill hope, and fight for change. Popular music, in particular, is considered to be an effective form of subversion and resistance under oppressive circumstances. But as Nomi Dave shows us in The Revolution's Echoes, the opposite is also true-music can often support, rather than challenge, the powers that be. Examining fifty years of history in Guinea, Dave introduces readers to the music supporting the authoritarian regime of former president Sékou Touré, and to the musicians who, even long after his death, have continued to praise dictators and avoid dissent. Dave shows that this isn't just the result of state manipulation-even in the absence of coercion, musicians and their audiences take real pleasure in musical praise of leaders. Time and again, whether in traditional music or in newer genres such as rap, Guinean musicians have celebrated state power and authority. With The Revolution's Echoes, Dave insists that we must grapple with the uncomfortable truth that some forms of music choose to support authoritarianism, generating new pleasures and new politics in the process

    Abstract: Der politischen Ökologie ist seit ihrer Entstehung im 19. Jahrhundert ein »Regierungswissen« eingeschrieben, das Regieren vor allem als Regulieren konzipiert. Im Anschluss an Michel Foucault lässt sich daher von einer ökologischen Gouvernementalität sprechen - ein Gegenprogramm zur neoliberalen Gouvernementalität und der politischen Ökonomie. Diese Regierungsform macht Probleme wie globale Erwärmung, Ressourcenknappheit oder Umweltverschmutzung zu Regulativen politischen Handelns und organisiert dieses Handeln nach ökologischen Prinzipien.Aus literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive untersucht Benjamin Bühler diese Prinzipien anhand von Romanen und naturwissenschaftlichen Abhandlungen, Theorien zur Landschaftsarchitektur und zum Design, Zukunftsfiktionen und Demokratietheorien

Für Heinz Bude sind Stimmungen die Gefühle der Gesellschaft. Er analysiert, wie sie entstehen, wie sie beeinflusst werden können, aber auch, wie sie kippen können. Stimmungen entscheiden darüber, wie wir die Welt wahrnehmen, deshalb ist es Politikern so wichtig, die Stimmung der Wähler zu kennen. Heinz Bude zeigt, warum Stimmungen in der Politik oft mehr entscheiden als Argumente. Stimmungen sind vage, flüchtig und unberechenbar. Aber wer verstehen will, wie unsere Demokratie funktioniert, muss von ihrer Macht über die Menschen wissen. „Die «universelle Stimmung der Selbstmotivierung, Selbstüberprüfung und Selbstverwirklichung», so Bude, scheine nur zwei Möglichkeiten zuzulassen: «die Akzeleration oder die Kontemplation, die Selbstüberbietung oder die Selbstversenkung, die Intensivierung der Tendenz oder den Exodus aus dem System». Doch setzt der teilnahmsvolle Beobachter auf eine dritte Verhaltensmöglichkeit, die sich der vermeintlichen Alternative nicht beuge. Er hört – so wird man sagen dürfen – das Gras wachsen und glaubt eine aufkeimende Stimmung erspüren zu können. Die dereinst in dieser Stimmung sein werden, nennt Bude, nicht ganz unfeierlich, «die Zukünftigen». Es sollen dies solche sein, die – «verhalten und scheu» – einen «anderen Anfang» suchen. Das tönt nicht nur nach Heidegger, sondern ist des Philosophen zweideutiger Beschwörung eines geschichtlichen Ereignisses entnommen, das alles, alles wenden soll. Ganz so gefährlich mutet Budes Übersetzung Heideggers freilich nicht an, dafür aber ähnlich vage. Das Lebensgefühl der Zukünftigen, so der Schlusspunkt, werde von «Weltoffenheit ohne Selbstverneinung» bestimmt sein“ (NZZ)

Doch tatsächlich verbergen sich hinter der scheinbar standardisierten Klangoberfläche mannigfaltige Formen des kulturellen Gebrauchs. Mittels umfangreicher Archivrecherchen illustriert Michael Rauhuts Vergleich der Entwicklung des Blues in Ost- und Westdeutschland, wie soziale und politische Verhältnisse den Sinn von Musik formen.Rauhut zeigt: Wenn auch die Sounds weltweit gültigen Mustern folgen und kaum Unterschiede erkennen lassen, sind doch die Bedeutungszusammenhänge, in denen sich der Blues realisiert, durchaus verschieden. Die Studie bietet nicht nur ein kultur- und musikgeschichtliches Resümee der Genese des Blues in Deutschland, sondern leistet auch einen Beitrag zur Globalisierungsdebatte
    Abstract: People like to reduce the blues to a handful of clichés and twelve bars. But in actual fact, behind the seemingly standardized surface of the sound, manifold forms of cultural use are concealed. Using extensive archival research, Michael Rauhut's comparison of the development of the blues in East and West Germany illustrates how social and political relations form the meaning of music. It shows that even if the sounds follow globally valid models and differences can barely be recognized, the contexts of meaning in which the blues is employed are thoroughly different. This study offers not just a historical summary of the blues, it also provides a contribution to the debate around globalization

Tracking the fall of South African hope into the disenchantment that often characterizes the outlook of its youth today who face high unemployment, extreme inequality, and widespread crime Steingo looks to kwaito as a powerful tool that paradoxically engages South Africa s crucial social and political problems by, in fact, seeming to ignore them. Politicians and cultural critics have long criticized kwaito for failing to provide any meaningful contribution to a society that desperately needs direction. As Steingo shows, however, these criticisms are built on problematic assumptions about the political function of music. Interacting with kwaito artists and fans, he shows that youth aren t escaping their social condition through kwaito but rather using it to expand their sensory realities and generate new possibilities. Resisting the truism that music is always political, Steingo elucidates a music that thrives on its its radically ambiguous relationship with politics, power, and the state. - Gavin Steingo is assistant professor of music at the University of Pittsburgh.

    Abstract: The role of folk music, broadly defined, during the trying years of the Great Depression in the United States, 1929–40, with a particular focus on the role of left-wing political groups and individuals. The government promoted a labor and cultural renaissance through the "alphabet stew" of federal programs, employing Charles Seeger, John and Alan Lomax, and numerous others in collecting folk music. Performers such as Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Pete Seeger, and many others connected vernacular music with commercial outlets such as concerts, record companies, and radio shows. Members of the Communist Party, in particular, used folk music to promote labor unions, civil rights, and a peace movement. Folk music remained a vital part of popular culture throughout the Depression years into World War II. There is a particular focus on the role that folk music played in the clash between capitalism and the emerging grassroots proletarian movements

    Abstract: This book offers a range of trajectories of academic thought and musical practice in Turkey. It adopts a multidisciplinary approach, with chapters exploring the question posed by its title from the perspectives of ethnomusicology, historical musicology, neurology, psychology, social science, gender studies, acoustics, and linguistics. Some studies are experimental and scientific in nature, ranging from a friends focus on tonality, using EEG to investigate differences in the cognitive responses of musicians and non-musicians listening to tonal and atonal chords, to an examination of brain activation in response to reverberation time differences resulting from room acoustics. Another essay assesses the psychometric properties and effectiveness of the new Turkish version of the Music Performance Anxiety Inventory for Adolescents (MPAI-A), designed to survey performance anxiety and determine its severity in adolescent musicians. On a completely different tack, two studies investigate Turkey's heavy metal scene. The first explores the social forces propelling the "moral panic" over Satanism and heavy metal, generated by the national press in response to a gory murder in the 1990s. Through field interviews, this study examines the impact of this on the public perception and stereotypes of metal fans, and its effects on the fans themselves. The second contribution examines gender codes within the global extreme metal scene, looking specifically at the barriers faced - and overcome - by female Turkish extreme metal musicians. Setting Turkish music practices today in their historical context, a further contribution offers a critical appraisal of the mission to "contemporize" music, expounded (though ineffectually carried out) by the founding ideologies of Early Republican Turkey.
    Abstract: A similar chapter discusses how even Anatolian folk music, when examined more closely, caused consternation, looking at the change in the Turkish state's attitude towards the multicultural structure of Anatolia during the last decade. The final article in this volume focuses on how Turkish musicians use the term "sound" - the English word, as borrowed in Turkish - to discuss elements of music. Beyond the physical meaning of the word, the essay explores the ways the word is used by musicians to describe the timbre of instruments, the production quality of recordings, the application of music technology, the aural aesthetics of an album, and the distinctive and unique elements of an artist's performance. - Firat Kutluk is a Professor of Musicology, and received his PhD on "Cultural Analysis of Popular Music in Turkey" in 1994. In addition to participating in various conferences, seminars and symposiums, he has presented a series of lectures on "New Music" and "Music and Politics". Between 1991 and 2009, he made a number of music programmes for broadcast, and has published the books Music History (1997) and Music and Politics (1997). He is currently Director of the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Dokuz Eylul University and Principal of DABMER (Acoustic and Cognitive Musicology Research Centre). Ugur Turkmen graduated from Uludag University's Faculty of Education in 1993. He gained a Master's degree from the Department of Music Education of Selcuk University in 1996. In 2005, he received his doctorate from Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University's Department of Music Education, before becoming an Associate Professor of Musicology in 2010. He is currently the Director of Afyon Kocatepe University State Conservatory.

    Abstract: " From civically and politically engaged women linking their identity as "mothers" to their fight for prohibition, public sanitation, and protective labor laws to the general call to arms of "mama grizzlies" issued by Sarah Palin in 2010, American political activists and candidates have used motherhood to rally women's interest, support, and participation throughout American history. Politicized motherhood persists, and motherhood continues to inspire women's participation and direct their concerns. In The Political Consequences of Motherhood, Jill S. Greenlee investigates the complex relationship between motherhood and women's political attitudes. Combining a historical overview of the ways motherhood has been used for political purposes with recent political opinion surveys and individual-level analysis, she explains how and when motherhood shapes women's thoughts and preferences. Greenlee argues that two mechanisms account for the durability of motherhood politics. First, women experience attitudinal shifts when they become mothers. Second, "mother" is a broad-based identity, widely shared and ideologically unconstrained, that lends itself to appeals across the political spectrum to build support for candidates and policy issues"--

    Abstract: Das Europa nach 1989 ist geprägt von neuen Mustern der kulturellen und ethnischen Exklusion sowie des Rechtsextremismus: Neue Konstellationen von (Alltags-)Rassismen sind die Folge der politischen und gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen der letzten 20 Jahre - etwa des Zerfalls der Sowjetunion und des Ostblocks, der Erweiterung der Europäischen Union und der Migration vom Osten und Süden nach Westen und Norden. In diesem Buch werden interdisziplinäre Zugänge zur Rassismusforschung, einzelne Fallstudien (vor allem aus Deutschland und dem östlichen Europa) sowie praktische Beispiele aus der Rassismusprävention vereint, die den veränderten gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen Rechnung tragen.
