    Kurzfassung: This book traces the origins and early development of what are today loosely termed Britain's Overseas Information Services. It examines how, at the end of the First World War, the British government came to forfeit the considerable lead it had established in propaganda since 1914, and the reasons why it had gradually to re-enter the field during the inter-war years as a direct response to totalitarianism. It surveys the pioneering work of the Foreign Office News Department and its important press office, the commercial propaganda conducted by the Empire Marketing Board and the Travel Association, the foundation and rapid peacetime growth of the British Council to conduct 'cultural diplomacy', and the beginning of the BBC's World Service with the inauguration of foreign-language broadcasts in 1938

    Kurzfassung: Trotz seiner Beschränkung auf Recht, Staat und Verwaltung spiegelt der Band etwas von der Vielfalt der gegenwärtigen Forschung zur älteren indischen Geschichte wider. Dem hinduistischen Indien fehlt ja die indigene Historiographie. Das Gerüst aus Fakten und Ideen hat man aus disparaten Quellen zusammenzusetzen - und für lange Perioden, für ganze Regionen fehlen auch die. Man ist auf beiläufige Erwähnungen, auf Rituale, Sprachgeschichte, Dialektgeographie angewiesen. Deutlich später setzt der breite Strom der mit grossem Prestige ausgestatteten Rechts- oder Moralliteratur ein, der - wiederum beiläufig - ein in seinen Grundzügen kohärentes Bild vom Königtum, von Recht und Staat vermittelt. Dessen Realität ist jedoch immer wieder in Zweifel gezogen worden - nicht zuletzt durch die Texte selbst. Obwohl sie sich normierend geben, reden sie gelegentlich der Pluralität, den Lokaltraditionen das Wort. Die seit dem Mittelalter reichlicher fließenden inschriftlichen Quellen zeigen dann auch regional unterschiedliche Systeme - kaum verwunderlich angesichts der Ausdehnung und kulturellen Vielfalt des Subkontinents. Dazu kommen Partikularrechte einzelner religiöser Gruppen, únd die Akkulturation durch den sich ausbreitenden Hinduismus in mannigfachen Mischformen. All das dokumentiert den mühseligen Prozeß der Auseinandersetzung zwischen "Lokalbrauch" und der Begrifflichkeit der Orthodoxie

    Kurzfassung: Written by a senior scholar and master mariner, Sailors and Traders is the first comprehensive account of the maritime peoples of the Pacific. It focuses on the sailors who led the exploration and settlement of the islands and New Zealand and their seagoing descendants, providing along the way new material and unique observations on traditional and commercial seagoing against the background of major periods in Pacific history. The book begins by detailing the traditions of sailors, a group whose way of life sets them apart. Like all others who live and work at sea, Pacific mariners face the challenges of an often harsh environment, endure separation from their families for months at a time, revere their vessels, and share a singular attitude to risk and death. The period of prehistoric seafaring is discussed using archaeological data, interpretations from inter island exchanges, experimental voyaging, and recent DNA analysis. Sections on the arrival of foreign exploring ships centuries later concentrate on relations between visiting sailors and maritime communities. The more intrusive influx of commercial trading and whaling ships brought new technology, weapons, and differences in the ethics of trade. The successes and failures of Polynesian chiefs who entered trading with European-type ships are recounted as neglected aspects of Pacific history. As foreign-owned commercial ships expanded in the region so did colonialism, which was accompanied by an increase in the number of sailors from metropolitan countries and a decrease in the employment of Pacific islanders on foreign ships. Eventually small-scale island entrepreneurs expanded inter island shipping, and in 1978 the regional Pacific Forum Line was created by newly independent states. This was welcomed as a symbolic return to indigenous Pacific ocean linkages. The book's final sections detail the life of the modern Pacific seafarer. Most Pacific sailors in the global maritime labor market return home after many months at sea, bringing money, goods, a wider perspective of the world, and sometimes new diseases. Each of these impacts is analyzed, particularly in the case of Kiribati, a major supplier of labor to foreign ships

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert hat die erste Frauenbewegung mit der Verankerung eigens Frauen vorbehaltener Bildungs- und Berufsbereiche zur Durchsetzung eines differenzbezogenen Musters der Fraueninklusion beigetragen. In der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts hingegen tritt die zweite Frauenbewegung für ein uneingeschränktes Recht auf Gleichheit ein. Das Buch führt diesen Wandel von Differenz zu Gleichheit auf konstitutive Zusammenhänge zwischen mobilisierungsfähigen Semantiken der Frauenbewegungen und Prozessen der Binnendifferenzierung des politischen Systems zurück. Seit den 1960er Jahren ist mit den modernen Volksparteien ein Staat entstanden, der der Garantie gesellschaftlicher Teilnahmerechte der Gesamtbevölkerung verpflichtet ist. Schichtung verliert als soziale Konfliktlinie an Bedeutung. Erst diese Entwicklung verhilft dem Anspruch der individuellen und sozialen Gleichheit der Geschlechter und dem Muster einer geschlechtsunabhängigen Inklusion zum Durchbruch

    Kurzfassung: While much has been written upon Social Darwinism, the historical impact of Darwinism upon theories of war and human aggression has been sadly neglected. This book is the first to study this discourse in depth. It challenges the received view that Darwinism generated essentially aggressive and warlike social values and pugnacious images of humankind. Paul Crook reconstructs the influential discourse of 'peace biology', whose liberal vision was of a basically free humanity, not fettered by iron laws of biological necessity or governed by violent genes. By exploring a gamut of Darwinian readings of history and war, mainly in the English-speaking world to 1919, this study throws new light upon militarism, peace movements, the origins of World War I and British social thought

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Am Kreuzungspunkt der Diskurse um Nation und Raum entstanden Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts Konzepte von Grenzen, die keine Linien mehr waren, sondern Räume. Dies war die Grundlage eines Raumbildes, das Deutschland nicht nur über seine Staats-, sondern auch über die deutsche Sprachgrenze hinaus vergrößerte. Der Band untersucht diese Transformation der Grenzen am Beispiel der deutschen Westgrenze. Anknüpfend an den antifranzösischen Nationsentwurf der Politischen Romantik und die wissenschaftliche Bestimmung der westlichen Sprachgrenze werden die Konzepte »Westmark«, »Westland« und »Westraum« rekonstruiert. Von den alldeutschen, jungkonservativen und nationalsozialistischen Diskursgemeinschaften geprägt, bezeichneten diese einen deutschen Grenzraum, der von der Kanal- und Nordseeküste bis zu den französischen Alpen und zur Rhône reichte, zugleich jedoch in hohem Maße symbolisch und ideologisch aufgeladen war. Als Gegenstück zum »Ostland« wurde dieses Raumkonstrukt zum Leitbild deutscher Kriegsziel- und Germanisierungspolitik und zu einem Symbolraum des »Neuen Europa« der SS.

    Kurzfassung: Heroes and Victims explores the cultural power of war memorials in 20th-century Romania through two world wars and a succession of radical political changes-from attempts to create pluralist democratic political institutions after World War I to shifts toward authoritarian rule in the 1930s, to military dictatorships and Nazi occupation, to communist dictatorships, and finally to pluralist democracies with populist tendencies. Examining the interplay of centrally articulated and locally developed commemorations, Maria Bucur's study engages monumental sites of memory, local funerary markers, rituals, and street names as well as autobiographical writings, novels, oral narratives, and film. This book reveals the ways in which a community's religious, ethnic, economic, regional, and gender traditions shaped local efforts at memorializing its war dead

    Kurzfassung: Die Dobrudscha am Schwarzen Meer, ein seit der griechischen Antike bekannter Kulturraum mit einer Fläche von knapp 23.000 qkm, der heute zu mehr als zwei Dritteln zu Rumänien und zu knapp einem Drittel zu Bulgarien gehört, ist seit dem Beitritt dieser beiden Länder zur Euopäischen Union (EU) am 1. Januar 2007 ein neuer Grenzraum der EU geworden. Dort sind Politik und Verwaltung auf lokaler Ebene mit zahlreichen Problemen konfrontiert, die teilweise typisch für Transformationsstaaten sind, teilweise aber auch der spezifischen regionalen Situation geschuldet sind. Insbesondere vier Problembereiche sind zu nennen, die im Rahmen einer internationalen Tagung im September 2007 in Konstanza (Constanta) am Schwarzen Meer (Rumänien) erörtert wurden: die sozioökonomische, die ethnische, die politisch-geographische und die ökologische Situation. Die Beiträge dieser Tagung, von denen die meisten in den vorliegenden Band aufgenommen sind, vermitteln aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln ein vielschichtiges Bild dieser Region, deren aktuelle Probleme oft auch auf widersprüchliche Auffassungen verschiedener Interessengruppen zurückzuführen sind.     Kurzfassung: This book examines how it was possible and what it meant for ordinary factory workers to become effective unionists and national political participants by the mid-1930s. We follow Chicago workers as they make choices about whether to attend ethnic benefit society meetings or to go to the movies, whether to shop in local neighborhood stores or patronize the new A&P. As they made daily decisions like these, they declared their loyalty in ways that would ultimately have political significance. When the depression worsened in the 1930s, workers adopted new ideological perspectives and overcame longstanding divisions among themselves to mount new kinds of collective action. Chicago workers' experiences all converged to make them into New Deal Democrats and CIO unionists. First printed in 1990, Making a New Deal has become an established classic in American history. The second edition includes a new preface by Lizabeth Cohen

    Kurzfassung: Early in the archaic period of Greek history, Messenia was annexed and partially settled by its powerful neighbour, Sparta. Achieving independence in the fourth century BC, the inhabitants of Messenia set about trying to forge an identity for themselves separate from their previous identity as Spartan subjects, refunctionalising or simply erasing their Spartan heritage. Professor Luraghi provides a thorough examination of the history of Messenian identity and consequently addresses a range of questions and issues whose interest and importance have only been widely recognised by ancient historians during the last decade. By a detailed scrutiny of the ancient written sources and the archaeological evidence, the book reconstructs how the Messenians perceived and constructed their own ethnicity at different points in time, by applying to Messenian ethnicity insights developed by anthropologists and early medieval historians

    Kurzfassung: Stephanie Budin demonstrates that sacred prostitution, the sale of a person's body for sex in which some or all of the money earned was devoted to a deity or a temple, did not exist in the ancient world. Reconsidering the evidence from the ancient Near East, the Greco-Roman texts, and the early Christian authors, Budin shows that the majority of sources that have traditionally been understood as pertaining to sacred prostitution actually have nothing to do with this institution. The few texts that are usually invoked on this subject are, moreover, terribly misunderstood. Contrary to many current hypotheses, the creation of the myth of sacred prostitution has nothing to do with notions of accusation or the construction of a decadent, Oriental 'Other'. Instead, the myth has come into being as a result of more than 2,000 years of misinterpretations, false assumptions, and faulty methodology
