Die Antike als Wiege der abendländischen Kultur bildet jeweils den Ausgangspunkt der drei Bereiche Geschichte, Literatur und Kunstgeschichte – ihre Rezeption besitzt in diesem Band einen wichtigen Stellenwert. Den gemeinsamen fränkischen Wurzeln Mitteleuropas tragen die Aufsätze zum kulturellen Gedächtnis im Mittelalter Rechnung; im Blick der Forschung stehen aber auch konkrete Aspekte der aus dem Karolingerreich entstandenen Einzelnationen. Historische Ereignisse, z. B. die Herrschaft Napoleons oder die beiden Weltkriege im 20. Jahrhundert, stellen schließlich markante Bezugspunkte in den drei genannten Disziplinen dar. Die Zentralisierung staatlicher Herrschaft und die mit dem Nationalismus verbundene Homogenisierung des Staatsvolkes hatten zur Folge, dass die jüdische Gemeindeautonomie sukzessive abgeschafft wurde – es sollte keine »Nation in der Nation« mehr geduldet werden. Stattdessen sollten die Juden jedes ethnische Bewusstsein ablegen und sich nur noch als »Glaubensgemeinschaft« verstehen. Während ein Teil der aufgeklärten jüdischen Elite daraufhin das Judentum in eine reine »Religion« zu transformieren versuchte, stellten viele andere dieser Reduktion bewusst ethnische Konzeptionen des Judentums gegenüber. Allerdings unterschieden sich diese ethnisch definierten Formen des Judentums ebenfalls in vielerlei Hinsicht von allen vormodernen Auffassungen des »Volkes Israel«. Zwar griffen jüdische Intellektuelle, welche die gemeinsame Abstammung und einen eigentümlichen »Volksgeist« ins Zentrum rückten, auch auf traditionelle Vorstellungen zurück, amalgamierten diese aber mit zeitgenössischen philosophischen, anthropologischen und religiösen Denkweisen.     Kurzfassung: "This is an innovative study of how race and empire transformed French Republican citizenship in the early Third Republic. Elizabeth Heath integrates the histories of the wine-producing Department of Aude and the sugar-producing colony of Guadeloupe to reveal the ways in which empire was integral to the Third Republic's ability to stabilize a Republican regime that began to unravel in an age of economic globalization. She shows how global economic factors shaped negotiations between local citizens and the Third Republic over the responsibilities of the Republic to its citizens leading to the creation of two different and unequal forms of citizenship that became constitutive of the interwar imperial nation-state and the French welfare-state. Her findings shed important new light on the tensions within Republicanism between ideals of liberty and equality and on the construction of race as a meaningful social category at a foundational moment in French history"--

    Kurzfassung: Welche Rolle spielt Freundschaft in der Welt des französischen Adels im siebzehnten Jahrhundert und insbesondere in der politischen Dynamik am Hof? Diese Frage nimmt Christian Kühner in diesem Band in den Blick. Gestützt auf Briefe und Memoiren stellt er verschiedene Dimensionen der Freundschaft vor. Neben der Semantik der Wörter »ami« und »amitié« analysiert er Auffassungen von Freundschaft und untersucht Vokabular und Rhetorik der Freundschaft. Die Praktiken der Freundschaft – ihre Rituale, Gesten und Symbole – werden ebenso beleuchtet wie verschiedene Freundschaftsdienste, etwa im politischen und ökonomischen Bereich. Eine langfristige Perspektive auf die Entwicklung des Phänomens ermöglicht es, Unterschiede zwischen früher Neuzeit und Moderne auszumachen.     Kurzfassung: Transatlantic Abolitionism in the Age of Revolution offers a fresh exploration of anti-slavery debates in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It challenges traditional perceptions of early anti-slavery activity as an entirely parochial British, European or American affair, and instead reframes the abolition movement as a broad international network of activists across a range of metropolitan centres and remote outposts. Interdisciplinary in approach, this book explores the dynamics of transatlantic abolitionism, along with its structure, mechanisms and business methods, and in doing so, highlights the delicate balance that existed between national and international interests in an age of massive political upheaval throughout the Atlantic world. By setting slave trade debates within a wider international context, Professor Oldfield reveals how popular abolitionism emerged as a political force in the 1780s, and how it adapted itself to the tumultuous events of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries
