Description / Table of Contents: "In 1961, Helen Andelin, a disillusioned housewife and mother of eight, languished in a lackluster, twenty-year old marriage. A religious woman, she spent long periods in fasting and prayer asking for help to improve her marriage. While studying a set of women's advice booklets from the 1920s, Andelin had an epiphany that not only changed her life but also affected the lives of millions of American women. She applied the principles from the booklets to her unhappy marriage and found that her difficult and disinterested husband became loving and attentive. He bought her gifts and hurried home from the office to be with her. Their marriage was revitalized. Andelin took her new-found happiness as a sign that God wanted her to share these principles with other women and began teaching classes at her church. The results were dramatic. In 1963, at the urging of her followers, Andelin wrote and self-published Fascinating Womanhood. The book, taken almost word for word from those 1920s advice booklets, sold hundreds of thousands of copies and launched a nationwide organization of classes and seminars led by thousands of volunteer teachers. Countering second-wave feminists in the 1960s, Andelin preached family values and traditional gender roles for women"--

Description / Table of Contents: The book, taken almost word for word from those 1920s advice booklets, sold hundreds of thousands of copies and launched a nationwide organization of classes and seminars led by thousands of volunteer teachers. Countering second-wave feminists in the 1960s, Andelin preached family values and traditional gender roles for women. She urged women not to have careers, but to become good wives, mothers, and homemakers instead. A woman's true happiness, taught Andelin, could only be realized if she admired, cared for, and obeyed her husband. As her notoriety grew, so did the backlash from her critics. Undeterred, she founded an organization, started a newsletter with a nationwide subscription, and became involved in politics. Andelin spoke to millions of women during a time of social unrest. Her message calling for the return to traditional roles appealed to them during a time of uncertainty and radical social change.
Description / Table of Contents: This study provides an evenhanded and important look at a crucial, but often overlooked cross-section of American women as they navigated their way through the turbulent decades following the post-war calm of the 1950s. "--

Keywords: Social sciences ; Psychiatry ; Social work ; Psychology, clinical ; Social Sciences ; Social sciences ; Psychiatry ; Social work ; Psychology, clinical ; Frau ; Psychische Gesundheit ; Schwangerschaft ; Lebenslauf
Abstract: Pregnancy and childbirth are generally viewed as joyous occasions. Yet for numerous women, these events instead bring anxiety, depression, and emotional distress. Increased interest in risk reduction and early clinical intervention is bringing reproductive issues to the forefront of women's mental health. The scope of Women's Reproductive Mental Health across the Lifespan begins long before the childbearing years, and continues well after those years have ended. Empirical findings, case examples, and dispatches from emerging areas of the field illuminate representative issues across the continuum of women's lives with the goal of more effective care benefitting women and their families. Chapter authors discuss advances in areas such as fertility treatment and contraception, and present current thinking on the psychological impact of pregnancy loss, menopause, cancer, and other stressors. These expert contributors emphasize the connections between an individual's biology and psychology and cultural expectations in shaping women's mental health, and the balance between a client's unique history and current clinical knowledge clinicians need to address disorders. Included in the coverage: The experience of puberty and emotional wellbeing. Body image issues and eating disorders in the childbearing years. Risk assessment and screening during pregnancy. Normal and pathological postpartum anxiety. Mood disorders and the transition to menopause. The evolution of reproductive psychiatry. A reference with an extended shelf life, Women's Reproductive Mental Health across the Lifespan enhances the work of researchers and practitioners in social work, clinical psychology, and psychiatry, and has potential relevance to all health care professionals

Abstract: The essays included in this volume mostly originate from the conference organised by the editors at Glasgow Women's Library in March 2012. Language, multilingual narratives and interaction between cultures and languages were key themes of the conference. Interdisciplinary and international, the conference, like this edited volume, brought together specialists working in a range of fields and provided an opportunity for exchanges between historians, sociologists, scientists and literary scholars, as well as between theoreticians and practitioners, academics and non-academics. In spite of these many different approaches, all the papers presented here transcend the idea of 'national identity' as an epic heritage or destiny, both linguistic and literary, and suggest a much more fluid definition of citizenship. Working from this perspective and within this general framework, both the editors and the contributors of this volume encourage a broader discussion on women's narratives of displacement that compels us to rethink the notions of 'mother tongue' and 'native speaker' and raises philosophical questions about linguistic ownership; in other words, whether a language is owned, appropriated, imposed or rejected and how women experience and express their sense of 'permanent strangeness'

Abstract: This book demonstrates that gender is a key component of conflict and peace discourse. The marginalization of women in conflict and peace is all pervasive. Kashmir is a mirror image of this global scenario. Kashmiri women aided the militant movement in significant ways though they did not take part in direct combat. They played key roles to sustain and nourish the movement – as protestors, protectors and motivators, and facilitators. Their experiences of participation in the conflict, however, remain subdued by the dominant masculinist discourse. Kashmiri women are excluded from the militancy discourse as contributors as well as from peacemaking discourse as stakeholders. The study interrogates theory and practice of women's participation in conflict and argues that changed gender-roles during conflict do not necessarily revolutionize socially ascribed norms. The book also examines the experiences of women in sustaining conflict to make a case for their due place in negotiating formal peace

Abstract: The constitutions of most countries frown at gender discrimination. Local, multinational and multilateral organizations in many developed and developing nations have instituted policies and taken actions that address cases of injustice against women. But gender inequity appears to be an issue beyond what constitutional provisions and corporate strategies can address. How, for instance, does a statutory provision guarantee the equal visibility of men and women in a news report, especially in ...

Abstract: This volume studies representation of historically under-represented groups by examining the case of representation of women's interests across different countries and venues. Representation involves not only getting group members into government - in multiple venues, at all levels of government - it also involves articulation of group interests, and then translation of interests into policy. Representation is a multistage process, influenced by the diversity of interests found within the group. Because competing groups in society have different preferences about policy, and want to maintain their access to positions of power to defend their interests, representation of historically under-represented groups is a contentious and contingent process.

Abstract: "The past century witnessed dramatic changes in the lives of modern Chinese women and gender politics. Whilst some revolutionary actions to rectify the feudalist patriarchy, such as foot-binding and polygyny were first seen in the late Qing period; the termination of the Qing Dynasty and establishment of Republican China in 1911-1912 initiated truly nation-wide constitutional reform alongside increasing gender egalitarianism. This book traces the radical changes in gender politics in China, and the way in which the lives, roles and status of Chinese women have been transformed over the last one hundred years. In doing so, it highlights three distinctive areas of development for modern Chinese women and gender politics: first, women's equal rights, freedom, careers, and images about their modernized femininity; second, Chinese women's overseas experiences and accomplishments; and third, advances in Chinese gender politics of non-heterosexuality and same-sex concerns. This book takes a multi-disciplinary approach, drawing on film, history, literature, and personal experience. As such, it will be of huge interest to students and scholars of Chinese culture and society, women's studies, gender studies and gender politics"..

Description / Table of Contents: "Asian women are often labelled with biased stereotypical images, ranging from "subordinate housewife" to "migrant domestic maid," and "overseas bride." Asian women, in fact, are being constructed as "women among women." These feminine roles are related to the various activities that women perform for others in intimate relationships both within and outside the family. This book comprises contributions from a distinguished group of international researchers who examine the historical development of "new women" and "good wife, wise mother," women's roles in socialist and transitional modernity and the transnational migration of domestic and sex workers as well as wives"--

Description / Table of Contents: Artists, scientists and the wider public of the Victorian era all seem to have shared a common interest in the myth of the Briar Rose and its contemporary implications, from the Pre-Raphaelites and late Victorian aesthetes to the fascinated crowds who visited Ellen Sadler, the real-life 'Sleeping Maid' who is reported to have slept from 1871 to 1880. The figure of the beautiful reclining female sleeper is a recurring theme in the Victorian imagination, invoking visual, literary and erotic connotations that contribute to a complex range of readings involving aesthetics, gender definitions and contemporary medical opinion. This book compiles and examines a corpus of Sleeping Beauties drawn from Victorian medical reports, literature and the arts and explores the significance of the enduring revival of the myth
Description / Table of Contents: «This volume gives an interesting overview of the topic in various fields of study, so that it may be of interest to scholars specializing not only in literature, but also in history and art history.»

Alisha M.B. Abstract: The book examines women's language as an ideological construct historically created by discourse. The aim is to demonstrate, by delineating a genealogy of Japanese women's language, that, to deconstruct and denaturalize the relationships between gender and any language, and to account for why and how they are related as they are, we must consider history, discourse and ideology. The book analyzes multiple discourse examples spanning the premodern period of the thirteenth century to the immediate post-WWII years, mostly translated into English for the first time, locating them in political, soc

Abstract: Tagungsband zur Tagung: "Das Geschlecht der Diplomatie : Geschlechterrollen in den Außenbeziehungen vom Spätmittelalter bis zur Gegenwart", Haus der Universität Bern, vom 1.12.2011 bis 3.12.2011

Abstract: "Chauhan's work is a timely contribution to the existing literature on Gender Inequality in Pakistan as it touches the root cause of the problem. His analysis goes beyond the usual NGO mantra of gender sensitization workshops as a panacea to gender inequality. Public policies hold the key to the changes from within, and Chauhan has substantiated that the problem lies with the patriarchal public sector that continues to support the status quo." - Tahmina Rashid, Qatar University Addressing deeply entrenched discrimination against women has been on the international development agenda for four decades. Despite some progress, shocking levels gender-based inequality remain. In Pakistan, the challenges are particularly acute. Khalid Chauhan confronts us with those challenges and demands that we rethink the ways in which gender inequality is addressed. Gender Inequality in the Public Sector in Pakistan an important book for all those with a commitment to gender equality, social justice and good governance. It deserves to be read.- Sharon Bessell, Australian National University "Chauhan presents Pakistan as a crucial case of gender inequality in the public sector. The mere five percent of women in Pakistan's public workforce mirrors enormous gender inequality elsewhere in the society. Chauhan traces the adoption of 'gender training' as a principal strategy for dealing with gender inequality, part of the call in development work to 'get institutions right.' The book convincingly shows the gross inadequacy of gender training as main means of dealing with forms of gender inequality that are structural and deeply entrenched." - Patrick Kilby, Australian National Univeristy

Abstract: Gesundheit als soziales Produkt: Moderne prädiktive Brustkrebsgentests liefern heute gesundheitsrelevantes Wissen mit eindeutiger Familienanbindung.

Abstract: DeNapoli brings to light the little known, and often marginalised, lives of female Hindu sadhus in the state of Rajasthan, offering a new perspective on the practice of asceticism in India today. Examining the everyday religious worlds and practices of primarily 'unlettered' female sadhus, whose ages cut across the lifespan and who come from a variety of castes, the book illustrates that the female sadhus interviewed by the author experience asceticism in relational and celebratory ways and view their lives as a path of singing to God.

Abstract: Our colleges and universities are being led in large part by baby boomers who are now in later midlife. Huge numbers of those middle-aged leaders will retire within the next 10 years. While we know that being in later midlife and impending retirement must influence a person in a leadership position at an institution of higher learning, we dont really understand how. This book is based upon an empirical study that linked higher education leadership to one aspect of midlife known as generativity. This psychosocial phenomenon was described by Erik Erikson as a desire that peaks in midlife to leave something for future generations before one dies. Generativity typically manifests itself in the legacy one intends to leave. The author of this book has completed a multiple case study of women who are in later midlife and who hold high-level leadership positions at an institution of higher learning. In this work, she shares more than has ever been known about the nature, antecedents, and support of generativity in the leadership of female higher education leaders in midlife.

Description / Table of Contents: Roman Cities, as conventionally studied, seem to be dominated by men. Yet as the contributions to this volume--which deals with the Roman cities of Italy and the western provinces in the late Republic and early Empire--show, women occupied a wide range of civic roles. Women had key roles to play in urban economies, and a few were prominent public figures, celebrated for their generosity and for their priestly eminence, and commemorated with public statues and grand inscriptions. Drawing on archaeology and epigraphy, on law and art as well as on ancient texts, this multidisciplinary study offers a new and more nuanced view of the gendering of civic life. It asks how far the experience of women of the smaller Italian and provincial cities resembled that of women in the capital, how women were represented in sculptural art as well as in inscriptions, and what kinds of power or influence they exercised in the societies of the Latin West. -- Publisher website

Abstract: In 1958, Suzanne and Ezra Vogel embedded themselves in a Tokyo suburban community, interviewing six middle-class families regularly for a year. Their research led to Japan's New Middle Class, a classic work on the sociology of Japan. Now, Suzanne Hall Vogel's compelling sequel traces the evolution of Japanese society over the past fifty years through the lives of three of these ordinary yet remarkable women and their daughters and granddaughters. These gripping biographies poignantly illustrate the strengths and the vulnerabilities of professional housewives and of families facing social change and economic uncertainty in contemporary Japan

Abstract: In the last two decades, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has closed many critical gender gaps, especially in ensuring equal access for girls and boys to education and healthcare. Today, the region can be proud that its women are enrolling in far greater numbers in university than ever before, and indeed, in many countries, young women are more educated than young men. At the same time, MENA has also witnessed the largest decrease in maternal mortality in the world. These achievements are commendable, and the next step is expanding the role of MENA women in the work place and in

Abstract: "Looking at the social, political and legal changes in Oman since 1970, this book challenges the Islamic and tribal traditional cultural norms relating to marriage, divorce and women's rights which guide social and legal practice in the modern Omani state. The book argues that despite the establishment of legal instruments guaranteeing equality for all citizens, the fact that the state depends upon Islamic and tribal elites for its legitimacy invalidates these guarantees in practice. Two particular features of the legal and cultural regulation of marriage and marital rights are focused on--the perceived requirement for kafa'a or equality in marriage between so called high and low socio-economic status peoples is examined, and the institution of talaq, which grants greater rights to men than to women in appeals for divorce. This book addresses highly complex subjects with great rigor, in terms of empirical research and engagement with theory, sociological and political as well as theological and legal. It is an interesting investigation of the divisions of authority between the state, Islam and tribal norms, highlighting barriers to reform in both Oman and wider Islamic society, and advocating the removal of such obstacles"--

Abstract: Millions of pounds of international development funds are invested annually in social protection programmes to tackle poverty. Poverty is perpetuated by risk and vulnerability, much of which is gendered. Despite this, little attention has been paid to gender-sensitive policy and programme design and implementation. Gender and Social Protection in the Developing World introduces a much-needed gender lens to these debates. Drawing on empirical evidence from poor households and communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America, the book provides rich insight into the effects of a range of social protection instruments. It concludes that with relatively simple changes to design and with investment in implementation capacity, social protection can contribute to transforming gender relations at the individual, intra-household and community levels. With a foreword by Stephen Devereux.

Abstract: The work and family lives of Mexican American women in a community near the U.S.-Mexico border in California's Imperial County are examined. Wells provides stories of the struggles, triumphs, and everyday experiences of these women and explores the social structures that create the barriers, constraints, and opportunities that have shaped their lives. These women aspire to achieve the American Dream, but the realities of life in a rural, agricultural border community strictly limit social mobility for these descendants of immigrant farm laborers.

Abstract: In Daughters and Granddaughters of Farmworkers, Barbara Wells examines the work and family lives of Mexican American women in a community near the U.S.-Mexican border in California’s Imperial County. Decades earlier, their Mexican parents and grandparents had made the momentous decision to migrate to the United States as farmworkers. This book explores how that decision has worked out for these second- and third-generation Mexican Americans. Wells provides stories of the struggles, triumphs, and everyday experiences of these women. She analyzes their narratives on a broad canvas that includes the social structures that create the barriers, constraints, and opportunities that have shaped their lives. The women have constructed far more settled lives than the immigrant generation that followed the crops, but many struggle to provide adequately for their families. These women aspire to achieve the middle-class lives of the American Dream. But upward mobility is an elusive goal. The realities of life in a rural, agricultural border community strictly limit social mobility for these descendants of immigrant farm laborers. Reliance on family networks is a vital strategy for meeting the economic challenges they encounter. Wells illustrates clearly the ways in which the “long shadow” of farm work continues to permeate the lives and prospects of these women and their families.

Abstract: Drawing on recent feminist discussions, this collection critically reassesses ideas about agency, exploring the relationship between agency and coercion in greater depth and across a range of disciplinary perspectives and ethical contexts, This collection aims to think critically about agency and explore the relationship between agency and coercion in greater depth. In academic, activist, and policy circles alike, feminist work has re-focused attention onto women as agents rather than as passive victims of overwhelming structures of male institutional power, or less capable of exercising agency by virtue of their class, race, gender or culture. These broadly positive moves are not without risks. Most notably, they can encourage a triumphalist disregard for constraints through an exclusive emphasis on 'discovering' agency even in the least favourable situations, thereby obscuring domination, inequality, and subordination. So how does bringing agency and coercion into closer interplay impact our understanding of the two? How might the stories of feminist agency change if we locate agency and coercion on the same intellectual frame? What would it mean to disrupt the existing constellation of ideas accompanying agency so as to include coercion, subordination and oppression alongside ideas of freedom, autonomy, and independence? How do we theoretically negotiate agency and coercion in conditions of deep inequality? This collection thinks through these questions in a range of regional, intellectual, ethical and political contexts
