Abstract:
Baba Peter Wee is a fourth generation Straits Chinese Peranakan, whose ancestry can be traced back to Malacca on his maternal side. Born Peter Wee Ban Kheng in 1946 to Wee Guan Hong from Indonesia and Josephine Tan Pin Neo, his name was taken from his maternal grandfather's ji hoh, or family plaque, Kheng Huat.

Peter Wee is the first vice-president of the Peranakan Association and a member of the Gunong Sayang Association. He is a leading authority on Peranakan culture - and is regularly consulted by collectoers, institutions and academicians. He is an advisor to both the Peranakan Museum as well as the Baba House of NUK Museums.

The term 'Baba' is used to refer to the Straits-born Chinese or Peranakans. The Babas boast a unique culture and way of life that is an amalgamation of Chinese and Malay customs and etiquette. Their culture is perhaps best captured in the beautiful clothing, stunning jewellery, pretty porcelain and other artefacts used in daily living. Girls were taught, from a young age, how to cook a variety of elaborate meals as well as crafts such as beading and embroidery.
