    Abstract: Questions on identity have been often the main focus of Classical Studies. The starting point of this book is that identity is not a monolithic idea.     Abstract: »Identikit for Latin America« is a collection of essays compiled by Gustav Siebenmann on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The first section is given over to fundamental considerations on cultural comparison and cultural identity. These are followed by essays on the quest for Latin American identity, the changes undergone by the image of Latin America in the mentality and literature of German-speaking nations, the role of the latter in the history of the continent, and their contribution to research on the region. After a comparison of the centenary celebrations to mark the discovery of America, the volume closes with a discussion of development problems.
    Abstract: »Suchbild Lateinamerika« ist eine Essaysammlung, die Gustav Siebenmann zum Anlaß seines 80. Geburtstags zusammengestellt hat. Es sind zunächst grundsätzliche Überlegungen zum Kulturvergleich und zur kulturellen Identität. Danach folgen Arbeiten über die Identitätssuche der Lateinamerikaner, über den Wandel des Lateinamerikabildes in Mentalität und Literatur der Deutschsprachigen, ferner über deren Rolle in der Geschichte des Kontinents sowie über deren Beitrag zur Forschung. Nach einem Vergleich der Zentenarfeiern der Entdeckung Amerikas folgt eine Diskussion über die Entwicklungsproblematik.

Diese stellte sich die Aufgabe, einem Forschungsdesiderat nachzugehen: dem Stellenwert der Fußreise innerhalb der deutschsprachigen Reiseliteratur des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts. Behandelt werden autobiographische und dichterische Texte, die in exemplarischer Weise Auskunft geben über einen Sachverhalt: der in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts einsetzenden sozialen Aufwertung der Reise zu Fuß (und deren Reflexion), die einhergeht mit einer Raumerfahrung, die aus der Sicht des Kutschenreisenden so nicht möglich war. - Ergänzt wird der Band durch eine Quellenbibliographie zu den Fußreisen in dem behandelten Zeitraum , Main description: The volume assembles papers presented at a conference held at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research into the European Enlightenment. The aim of the meeting was to close a conspicuous research gap by looking at the status of journeys on foot in 18th and 19th century travel literature in German. The articles examine autobiographical and literary texts giving representative information on the phenomenon of the new social prestige accorded to journeys on foot (and reflection upon them) identifiable in the second half of the 18th century. Central to this reevaluation was an appreciation of the heightened experience of space and distance denied to coach travelers. The volume closes with a source bibliography of works pertaining to journeys on foot in the period in question

Es ging um die Frage, welche Varianten es in Mitteleuropa im Zeitraum zwischen etwa 1870 und dem "Dritten Reich" bzw. dem Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs gab, sich persönlich wie kollektiv als Jude wahrzunehmen und ggf. zu definieren.
    Abstract: Main description: The articles in this volume originated from an international and interdisciplinary symposium organized in October 1994 by the Bibliothèque Nationale Luxembourg in collaboration with the Leo Baeck Institute (London), the Division of German-Jewish Literary History at the RWTH Technical University in Aachen and the Department of Hebrew and Comparative Literature of Haifa University. Common to all of them is the question of the various available modes of individual and collective Jewish self-awareness and self-definition existing in Central Europe in the period between 1870 and the Third Reich/Second World War.

    Abstract: How did Judaism, a religion so often defined by its minority status, attain equal footing in the trinity of Catholicism, Protestantism, and Judaism that now dominates modern American religious life? THE AMERICANIZATION OF THE JEWS seeks out the effects of this evolution on both Jews in America and an America with Jews. Although English, French, and Dutch Jewries are usually considered the principal forerunners of modern Jewry, Jews have lived as long in North America as they have in post- medieval Britain and France and only sixty years less than in Amsterdam. As one of the four especially creative Jewish communities that has helped re-shape and re-formulate modern Judaism, American Judaism is the most complex and least understood. German Jewry is recognized for its contribution to modern Jewish theology and philosophy, Russian and Polish Jewry is known for its secular influence in literature, and Israel clearly offers Judaism a new stance as a homeland. But how does one capture the interplay between America and Judaism? Immigration to America meant that much of Judaism was discarded, and much was retained. Acculturation did not always lead to assimilation: Jewishness was honed as an independent variable in the motivations of many of its American adherents- -and has remained so, even though Jewish institutions, ideologies, and even Jewish values have been reshaped by America to such an degree that many Jews of the past might not recognize as Jewish some of what constitutes American Jewishness. This collection of essays explores the paradoxes that abound in the America/Judaism relationship, focusing on such specific issues as Jews and American politics in the twentieth century, the adaptation of Jewish religious life to the American environment, the contributions and impact of the women's movement, and commentaries on the Jewish future in America.
