Abstract: by ROBERT ROSS and GERARD J. TELKAMP I In a sense, cities were superfluous to the purposes of colonists. The Europeans who founded empires outside their own continent were primarily concerned with extracting those products which they could not acquire within Europe. These goods were largely agricultural, and grown most often in a climate not found within Europe. Even when, as in India before 1800, the major exports were manufactures, in general they were still made in the countryside rather than in the great cities. It was only on rare occasion when great mineral wealth was discovered that giant metropolises grew up around the site of extraction. Since their location was deter mined by geology, not economics, they might be in the most inaccessible and in convenient areas, but they too would draw labour off from the agricultural pursuits of the colony as a whole. From the point of view of the colonists, the cities were therefore in some respects necessary evils, as they were parasites on the rural producers, competing with the colonists in the process of surplus extraction. Nevertheless, the colonists could not do without cities. The requirements of colonisation demanded many unequivocally urban functions. Pre-eminent among these was of course the need for a port, to allow the export of colonial wares and the import of goods from Europe, or from other parts of the non-European world, in the country-trade as it was known around India.

Abstract: Main description: Robert A. Nye places in historical context a medical concept of deviance that developed in France in the last half of the nineteenth century, when medical models of cultural crisis linked thinking about crime, mental illness, prostitution, alcoholism, suicide, and other pathologies to French national decline.Originally published in 1984.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Abstract: "This is a study of the Maya Indians of Yucatan, Mexico, from late preconquest times through the end of Spanish colonial rules (ca. 1500-1820). It takes the form of an historical ethnography, which attempts to reconstruct the Maya world in as comprehensive a fashion as possible--by relating ecology and modes of subsistence to social forms and belief systems--and to trace changes in that world within the larger colonial context"--Preface

Abstract: Warnicke has written an excellent monograph dealing with an inordinately neglected topic: the education of English women during the Tudor and early Stuart eras. ... Her approach, a generational one, is both perceptive and insightful.... She carefully identifies the women and discusses the reasons and nature of their education as well as their accomplishments. Equally masterful is her successful integration of the subject with the major historical--ecclesiastical, political, and social-- currents of the time

Abstract: Kay Ann Johnson provides much-needed information about women and gender equality under Communist leadership. She contends that, although the Chinese Communist Party has always ostensibly favored women's rights and family reform, it has rarely pushed for such reforms. In reality, its policies often have reinforced the traditional role of women to further the Party's predominant economic and military aims. Johnson's primary focus is on reforms of marriage and family because traditional marriage, family, and kinship practices have had the greatest influence in defining and shaping women's place i

Abstract: There are many reasons why issues raised by the study of 'races' and racisms shouldbe central to the concerns of cultural studies. Yet racist ideologies and racial conflictshave been ignored, both in historical writing and in accounts of the present. Ifnothing else, this book should be taken as a signal that this marginalization cannotcontinue. It has also been conceived as a corrective to the narrowness of the Englishleft whose version of the 'national-popular' continues to deny the role of blacks andblack struggles in the making and the remaking of the working class
