Despite Dispossession: An Activity Book extends an invitation to restore and reinvent bonds of reciprocity with the land, humans, and non-humans, while envisioning transformative and shared horizons. This collaborative endeavor takes as its point of departure the contested realities and public struggles of the dispossessed. Bringing together seven site-sensitive engagements, the contributors develop their artistic works, as well as speculative tools and activities, to conjure worlds to come in the ruins of dispossession. The result is a combination of subtle theoretical reflection, pluriversal modes of inquiry, and unruly epistemic intervention. Drawing its inspiration from decolonizing methodologies, Black aesthetics, and epistemologies of the South, the project gathers these influences for a novel experiment that demonstrates how arts-based researchers confront dispossession through itinerant practices of resistance

    Abstract: "Nicole Oresme was one of the most original and influential thinkers of the fourteenth century. He is best known for his mathematical discoveries, his economic theories, as well as his vernacular translations of cosmological and ethical texts that were undertaken at the request of King Charles V. This volume sheds light on the beginning of Oresme's scientific activity at the University of Paris (ca. 1340 - ca. 1350), a period of his intellectual career about which little is known. Over the course of this decade, Oresme lectured on many Aristotelian texts on natural philosophy, such as the Physics, On the Heavens, On generation and corruption, Meteorology, and On the Soul. Oresme's commentaries on Aristotle's Meteorology count among his only unpublished texts.     Abstract: Bursa örneği üzerinden taşrada kent ve aydın ilişkisini bir zaman kesitinden tartışan bu çalışma; elit dolaşımı teorileri, elit ve aydın kavramları, mekân üzerinden yürütülen siyasal-kültürel tartışmaları, siyasal muhayyileler üzerinden şekillenen toplumsal hafıza inşâ süreçleri ve tarih yazımı gibi, sosyal bilimlerle meşgul olan araştırmacıların ve bu alanlara ilgi duyan okuyucunun başucu kitabı olarak değerlendirebileceği bir kaynaktır. Yazar, bu kavram ve teorileri, tarihsel zemin ve zamanın ruhu içinde, yapılar ve failler arasındaki ilişkileri sorgulayarak somutlaştırmak istemiştir.     Abstract: The Science of Wealth was written by Münif Pasha, who features large in our history of science and philosophy. The work was used as a textbook by the Ottoman Law School, and took its place among the texts that carried modern economic knowledge to the Ottoman world of thought. The period that started in the second half of the 19th century and continued up until the foundation of the Republic was a time of remarkable contributions to economic literature. The fact that The Science of Wealth remains an important part of this body of literature and reflects the economic knowledge of period in its discussions served as the basis for In The Science of Wealth, Münif Pasha defends the idea of a liberal economy, although his criticisms of some of the views of Adam Smith and Malthus differentiate his work from other books in the economics field at the time. Issues, such as private property, the division of labour, freedom of industry and trade, fixed pricing, customs and interest, all of which are highly important in the creation of a liberal transformation to an economic, political, administrative, legal, religious and social structure, are among the headings in the Science of Wealth. The original, translated and simplified texts allow the work to reach a broader audience. It is hoped that the study will increase the level of interest in our economics and science history literature
    Abstract: İlm-i Servet, bilim ve felsefe tarihimizde müstesna bir yere sahip olan Münif Paşa’nın iktisat kitabıdır. Eser, Mekteb-i Hukuk’ta ders kitabı olarak okutulmuş, modern iktisadi bilgiyi Osmanlı düşünce dünyasına taşıyan kitaplar arasında yerini almıştır. 19. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren Cumhuriyet’in kuruluşuna kadar olan dönemde dikkate değer bir iktisat literatürü oluşmuştur. İlm-i Servet’in bu literatürün önemli bir parçası olması, dönemin iktisadi bilgi ve tartışmalarını yansıtması elinizdeki çalışmanın hazırlanmasına da dayanak oluşturmuştur. İlm-i Servet’te Münif Paşa liberal iktisat düşüncesini savunmuştur. Bununla birlikte Adam Smith ve Malthus’un bazı görüşlerine getirdiği eleştiriler, eseri dönemin diğer iktisat kitaplarından farklı kılmaktadır.     Abstract: Research suggests that the tourism industry, known to affect over sixty sectors, is a major source of income in our country, as in many other countries. Its contribution to close the deficit in the balance of payments and to alleviate unemployment as it is a labour-intensive sector, demonstrates its importance. Moreover, while enabling foreign currency inflow for the country, the fact that it achieves this with minimal import, places the tourism sector in a truly “national and domestic” sector position. For this reason, it has been declared as a “strategic sector” by the Presidency. Having knowledge on which markets Turkey is specialized or not specialized, in comparison to competing countries and examining the areas where it has a competitive advantage or disadvantage is important in terms of policies and regulations to be implemented by the local and central administration bodies, as well as determining the strategies and management approach involving the future of the sector. Within this scope, the sectoral development of tourism and hotel management and new trends in Turkey are examined in this book and with the shift-share analysis among Mediterranean countries, dynamics are addressed. In the context of tourism, whether other countries and Turkey are specialized, in which country markets, has been examined. Besides constituting a resource for researchers studying tourism dynamics and trends, this book is intended to guide tourism policy and strategy developers and local administrations.
    Abstract: Yapılan araştırmalar sonucunda altmıştan fazla sektörü etkilediği bilinen turizm endüstrisi, birçok ülkede olduğu gibi ülkemizin de en önemli gelir kaynaklarından biridir. İçinde bulunduğu ödemeler dengesindeki açığın kapatılması ve emek-yoğun bir sektör olması sebebiyle işsizliğin giderilmesindeki katkısı bu önemini ortaya koymaktadır. Ayrıca ülkeye döviz girdisini kazandırırken, bunu minimum düzeyde ithalatla gerçekleştirmesi turizm sektörünü gerçek “milli ve yerli” bir sektör konumuna yerleştirmektedir. Bu sebepledir ki Cumhurbaşkanlığı tarafından “stratejik sektör” olarak ilan edilmiştir. Türkiye’nin rakip ülkelere göre hangi pazarlarda uzmanlaşmış veya uzmanlaşmamış olduğunun bilinmesi ve rekabet avantajının veya dezavantajının olduğu alanların incelenmesi, sektörün geleceğini ilgilendiren stratejilerin ve yönetim anlayışının belirlenmesi kadar yerel ve merkezi idare tarafından uygulanacak politika ve düzenlemeler açısından da önemlidir. Bu kapsamda, bu kitapta Türkiye’nin turizm ve otelcilik sektör gelişimi ve yeni eğilimler incelenerek Akdeniz ülkeleri arasında değişim payı analizi ile dinamiklere değinilmiştir. Diğer ülkeler ve Türkiye’nin turizm bağlamında hangi ülke pazarlarında uzmanlaşmış olup olmadığı incelenmiştir.Bu kitabın turizm dinamikleri ve eğilimleri konularında çalışan araştırmacılara kaynak olmasının yanı sıra turizm politikası ve stratejisi geliştirenlere ve yerel yönetimlere rehberlik etmesi amaçlanmıştır.

    Abstract: Yearbooks are the books that play an important role in increasing the social and cultural level of the Greek community in the provinces of the Ottoman society and are published annually. Its content usually includes social events, science, medicine, geography, history, interesting articles, useful information, anecdotes, stories, proverbs and religious texts with advices. This yearbook has been prepared as a resource for researchers studying the Karamanli language and the history of Nevşehir. The works written in Karamanli language are generally of religious content, though few in number. Therefore most valuable works to be examined to understand the social life of the period are yearbooks, due to such quality. This book, being the first of the two yearbooks issued for Nevşehir, has been prepared for the Turkish speaking Greek community living in Anatolia, in order to enable them to obtain information on the present, past and future, to keep the customs and traditions alive and to present general information. This work, prepared and compiled in 1912 and presented to its readers in 1913, has been translated into modern Turkish and submitted to all researchers, academicians and readers
    Abstract: Salnameler; Osmanlı toplumu içerisindeki Rum cemaatinin yaşadığı illerdeki sosyal ve kültürel düzeylerinin artmasında önemli rol oynayan ve yılda bir çıkarılan kitaplardır. İçeriğinde genellikle toplumsal olaylar, ilim, fen, tıp, coğrafya, tarih, ilginç makaleler, faydalı bilgiler, fıkralar, öyküler, atasözleri ve öğüt içerikli dinsel metinler yer alır. Bu salname, Karamanlıca yazı dili ve Nevşehir tarihi üzerine çalışmalar yürüten araştırmacılara bir kaynak olarak hazırlanmıştır. Karamanlıca yazılı eserler, sayıca az olmakla birlikte genellikle dini içeriklidir. Bu niteliğinden dolayı, döneminin sosyal yaşamını anlamak için incelenecek en değerli eserler salnamelerdir.     Abstract: The Archive of the City of Vienna keeps three folio-volumes of a manuscript in conservation of her archive, which in common was marked as “Wiener Testamentsbücher” (Viennese Last Wills-Register). The source, comprising the period of 1395 to 1430, at this time was named “Stadtbuch”, and this appoints the character of such registers, which served for registration of legal transactions in urban space. In total the “Stadtbuch” embodies more than 4.500 registrations, in most cases last wills (“Geschäfte”), but also a lot of registrations about transactions concerning private law as well as matters of pubic law

    Abstract: The fourteenth volume of the critical edition of pope Innocent III’s chancery-registers is containing 161 letters addressed to recipients all over Europe and in the Middle East. In this year of the pontificate, no geographical focus is discernible. However, christianitas as threatened at three frontiers (in Spain and the East by Muslims, in Southern France by heretics) is a topic constantly recurring in the Pope’s letters. The register of Innocent’s fourteenth year of pontificate is one of the four volumes transmitted not as original but as a copy written at the Curia in mid-14th century and as print published in the 17th century

    Abstract: "The Medicamina Faciei Femineae is a didactic elegy that showcases an early example of Ovid's trademark combination of poetic instruction and trivial subject matter. Exploring female beauty and cosmeceuticals, with particular emphasis on the concept of cultus, the poem presents five practical recipes for treatments for Roman women. Covering both didactic parody and pharmacological reality, this deceptively complex poem possesses wit and vivacity and provides an important insight into Roman social mores and day-to-day activities. The first full study in English devoted to this little-researched but multi-faceted poem, Ovid on Cosmetics includes an introduction that situates the poem within its literary heritage of didactic and elegiac poetry, its place in Ovid's oeuvre and its relevance to social values, personal aesthetics and attitudes to female beauty in Roman society. Notwithstanding the warnings of the seer Tiresias and the cautionary tale of a character Acoetes (perhaps Bacchus in disguise), who tells of how the god once transformed a group of blasphemous sailors into dolphins, Pentheus refuses to acknowledge the divinity of Bacchus or allow his worship at Thebes. Enraged, yet curious to witness the orgiastic rites of the nascent cult, Pentheus conceals himself in a grove on Mt. Cithaeron near the locus of the ceremonies. But in the course of the rites he is spotted by the female participants who rush upon him in a delusional frenzy, his mother and sisters in the vanguard, and tear him limb from limb. The episode abounds in themes of abiding interest, not least the clash between the authoritarian personality of Pentheus, who embodies 'law and order', masculine prowess, and the martial ethos of his city, and Bacchus, a somewhat effeminate god of orgiastic excess, who revels in the delusional and the deceptive, the transgression of boundaries, and the blurring of gender distinctions.     Abstract: "From Catullus to Horace, the tradition of Latin erotic poetry produced works of literature which are still read throughout the world. Ovid's Amores, written in the first century BC, is arguably the best-known and most popular collection in this tradition. Born in 43 BC, Ovid was educated in Rome in preparation for a career in public services before finding his calling as a poet. He may have begun writing his Amores as early as 25 BC. Although influenced by poets such as Catullus, Ovid demonstrates a much greater awareness of the funny side of love than any of his predecessors. The Amores is a collection of romantic poems centered on the poet's own complicated love life: he is involved with a woman, Corinna, who is sometimes unobtainable, sometimes compliant, and often difficult and domineering. Whether as a literary trope, or perhaps merely as a human response to the problems of love in the real world, the principal focus of these poems is the poet himself, and his failures, foolishness, and delusions. By the time he was in his forties, Ovid was Rome's most important living poet; his Metamorphoses, a kaleidoscopic epic poem about love and hatred among the gods and mortals, is one of the most admired and influential books of all time. In AD 8, Ovid was exiled by Augustus to Romania, for reasons that remain obscure. He died there in AD 17. The Amores were originally published in five books, but reissued around 1 AD in their current three-book form.     Abstract: The first coherent and handy edition with commentaries of one oft he most important sources for history, administration and religious mentalities of the city of Rome in the 4th century A.D.The collection of pictures, lists and short notes, known as the "Chronography of 354" or the "Calendar of Filocalus" is a calendar handbook for the year 354 C.E. Of the thirteen texts, four are Christian documents; the remaining are witnesses of Roman administration and provide no clue for Christianity, or at times even attestations to the Roman religiosity of the Republic and the Imperial Time. The handbook contents can be distinguished by whether it has pictures or just text. Given the complexity of the present form of its constituents, the calendar handbook is an important source for the politic administrative history of the late-Constantine time, for the history of the transformation of religious mentalities, and for the success of the story of Christianity in the city of Rome. The following texts are especially noteworthy:(1)The consular fasti from the beginning of the consulate up to the year 354 CE, for the Roman History and the families that dominated it;(2)the yearly calendar for those festivals celebrated in late-Constantine time with their political and religio-historical dimension, which influenced the history of everyday life of the city;(3)the Catalogus Liberianus, the oldest Roman book of the popes, which together with the lists of the Deposito episcoporum and the Deposito martyrum, the oldest feriale of any Christian Church, is important for the Church of Rome and its conception of history.Notwithstanding a century-long history of editions and commentaries of the calendar handbook, there is up to the present no connected edition and commentary of the pertinent texts, only critical editions of individual parts. This is related to the complex tradition process and the preserved late manuscripts of the 16th and the 17th Century. This poses a range of problems, which this edition and its commentaries tackle:(a)what all was part of the original calendar(b)when did the different texts and their redactions, which lead to the expansions, come into being(c)the perennial research problem of the relationship between the traditional Roman religion and Christianity, for which the texts of the chronographs provide crucial evidence(d)the position of the calendar handbook in the history of book illustration in Late Antiquity.Furthermore, since Mommsen's classical ...

    Abstract: Pen in the Park is a unique revolutionary children's book written by Raşel Meseri and illustrated by Sanne Karssenberg. Meseri narrates the Gezi Park protests in Istanbul through the figure of a penguin named Pen, whogoes on a trip from Antarctica to Gezi Park to save his fellow penguins, and gets involved in various adventures with his friends Chapulletta, the cat Trafo, and the dog Loukanikos. The Gezi movement of 2013-14 started with the threat of the destruction of the Gezi Park, a public space, which became quickly occupied by protestors from all generations and political backgrounds to build a movement that addressed not only the destruction of green areas and gentrification of public space, but also the democratic deficit of the country as such. At the height of the protests, dozens of protesters were killed and thousands injured. As the result of the protests, the park remained a public space and the struggle continues in different forms up to this day. During the protests, penguins were reclaimed as one of the symbols, as the main television channels preferred to show documentaries about the lives of penguins, instead of the uprising in Turkey. In Meseri's story, Pen the brave penguin, Pen, is both a symbol and an active agent in the course of events, guiding us through the process of political emancipation, democratic experiment, friendship, and solidarity that characterizes the Gezi movement

In 66 BCE, after decades of inconclusive struggle, the tribune Manilius proposed a bill that would give supreme command in the war against Mithridates to Pompey the Great, who had just swept the Mediterranean clean of another menace: the pirates. While powerful aristocrats objected to the proposal, which would endow Pompey with unprecedented powers, the bill proved hugely popular among the people, and one of the praetors, Marcus Tullius Cicero, also hastened to lend it his support. In his first ever political speech, variously entitled pro lege Manilia or de imperio Gnaei Pompei, Cicero argues that the war against Mithridates requires the appointment of a perfect general and that the only man to live up to such lofty standards is Pompey.     Abstract: The defeats and losses of lands since the last quarter of the 16th century prompted intellectuals in Muslim countries, particularly the Ottoman Empire, to look for ways of overcoming their weakness against the West. The foremost notion in the various theses developed in this context is that the problem stems from the basic values of Islam and the practices of the Prophet and his Companions. According to this view, the main reason for the defeat of the Islamic world by the Western states can be attributed to the lack of development of a cultural infrastructure that can produce the type of businessman who can take the necessary risks for the development of capitalism
    Abstract: On altıncı yüzyılın son çeyreğinden itibaren alınan yenilgiler, kaybedilen topraklar, başta Osmanlı İmparatorluğu olmak üzere, Müslüman ülkelerin aydınlarını Batı karşısında içine düştükleri güçsüzlükten kurtulmaya yönelik arayışlara sevk eder. Bu çerçevede geliştirilen muhtelif tezlerin önde geleni, sorunun bizzat İslam dininin vazettiği temel değerler ile Peygamber ve sahabelerin uygulamalarından kaynaklandığı şeklindedir. Buna göre, İslam dünyasının Batılı devletlere yenik düşmesinin başlıca nedeni, kapitalizmin gelişmesi için gerekli olan risk üstlenebilen işadamı tipolojisini üretebilecek kültürel altyapının gelişmemiş olmasıdır

    Abstract: This in-depth study of Thomas Aquinas' Quaestio de Attributis binds together the findings of previous research on the unique history of this text by reconstructing the historical circumstances surrounding its composition, shows that the Quaestio contains Aquinas' final answer to the dispute on the divine attributes, and thoroughly examines his interpretation of Maimonides' position on the issue of the knowledge of God by analysing this and other texts related to it chronologically and doctrinally.

    Abstract: "A number of Jewish philosophers active in Spain and Italy in the second half of the 15th century (Abraham Bibago, Baruch Ibn Ya'ish, Abraham Shalom, Eli Habillo, Judah Messer Leon) wrote Hebrew commentaries and questions on Aristotle. In these works, they reproduced the techniques and terminology of Late-Medieval Latin Scholasticism, and quoted and discussed Latin texts (by Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas, William of Ockham, John Duns Scotus, and other authors) about logic, physics, metaphysics, and ethics. All of these works are still unpublished, and they have not yet been either studied, or translated in modern languages. The aim of this book is to give an idea of the extent and character of this hitherto neglected ""Hebrew Scholasticism"". After a general historical introduction to this phenomenon, and bio-bibliographical surveys of these philosophers, the book gives complete or partial annotated English translations of the most significant Hebrew Scholastical works. It includes also critical editions of some parts of these texts, and a Latin-Hebrew glossary of Scholastical technical terms."

This Presidency was but one of the many official duties he carriedout with such distinction. He served as rector magnificus of Leiden University, asPresident of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and as chairmanof many other societies and committees. His style of presiding was casualand ironical, but always very effective.Although much sought-after as chairman of various bodies in the scholarlyworld, his real love was for literature and art. He started his academic career atLeiden University as professor of French literature (1947-1975), after which heswitched to general literature (1975-1981). His publications mirror his versatilemind: he wrote about Erasmus, Rabelais, Grotius, Proust, Valery and manyothers; he discussed, among other things, kitsch, the detective novel and theVIII PREFACEpleasure of reading; he devoted books to the theory of biography, humanism,creativity, symbolism, and Holocaust literature. One of Dresden's favouriteauthors was Montaigne whom he characterised as the 'spelende wijsgeer' (theplaying philosopher). In April 2002 he was awarded the EC. Hooft prize, theDutch national prize for literature, for his books and essays.Professor Dresden joined the Conseil international in 1965 and has also been amember of the Editorial Board. In 1977 he edited Erasmus' De contemptu mundi(ASD V, I, pp. 1-86) and in 1985 the Commentaries on Psalms 2 and 3 (ASD V, 2,pp. 81-179).We will cherish the memory or our former President for his many contributionsto the Erasmus edition. His devotion to ASD and its collaboratorswas, as we remember, often hidden behind what he himself used to call hislightheartedness
