Abstract: People are now more liberated to give meaning to their life and to select values they deem important. What effect does this have on conversations about meaning and spirituality with the upcoming generation? Nowadays, shared religious and church practices are not as prevalent as they once were. Is a personal testimony of how meaning and spirituality have developed in one's own life the or a way of communicating something to children, pupils, and students? One way of sharing a testimony is the 'spiritual autobiography', a practice that was developed in the US and later brought to the Netherlands by Jannet Delver. It is now used in universities and higher vocational schools. Also for group discussions with clients, writing and sharing one's spiritual biography has been found to contribute to (re)finding sources of strength in difficult times
Abstract: In this book, the method is applied in an intergenerational context through a series of letters between the editor and his daughters Elsemarijn and Janneleen, along with an accompanying discussion. Additionally, many professionals and scientists provide their – personal – perspectives. Living as a search for the meaning of life need not be laborious, but rather engaging and contagious

Abstract: By describing their present as ‘enlightened’, eighteenth-century intellectuals inevitably altered their relationship to the past. In search of an explanation for this Enlightenment, eighteenth-century authors created a historical narrative which connected European countries in a linear history from antiquity, through the barbarous Middle Ages, to the progress of the scientific revolution and, finally, to the enlightened present in which seventeenth-century knowledge was perceived as increasingly benefiting society as a whole. Even though this narrative served as a shared European history and identity, national varieties soon emerged. This book shows that, in the context of the European ‘Enlightened narrative’, the Dutch Republic formed an extraordinary case. Here, the narrative of progress collided with a simultaneous debate on national decline and a deeply rooted humanistic tradition. Dutch intellectuals, moreover, were forced to reconsider their national past and national identity. The Batavian myth, for two centuries the primary historical foundation of national identity, increasingly came to be viewed as ‘barbaric’. Consequently, the concept of a seventeenth-century Golden Age was invented. It replaced the Batavian myth with a celebration of seventeenth-century Dutch economic prosperity, commercial politeness and moral rectitude more in line with enlightened historical thought
--Page 4 of cover

Abstract: Despite attempts by the Dutch government to combat and discourage unlawful residence, there are people who live in the Netherlands without a residence permit. However, little is known about the way they live (or survive) and work in the Netherlands. Although their residence is not legal, this does not mean that migrants without residence permits have no rights. On the contrary, this book connects the legal legislation and regulations on the national and international level with the socio-economic reality of this vulnerable group of migrants. Based on unique empirical material, this study shows the discrepancy between the rights that also apply to migrants without residence permits, for example as workers, as patients or as residents, and shows the absence of protection in everyday practice. The book concludes with an exploration of possibilities for improving the vulnerable position of migrants without residence permits in the Netherlands

Abstract: How can we be sure that the food we buy in grocery stores won’t make us sick? The institutions, laws and regulatory systems put in place to safeguard that food is safe to consume are the result of a long and complex process. This book takes a close look at that process and at how various actors and institutions – we call them ‘food’s facilitators’ – have worked to ensure that the food we eat is fresh, healthy and safe. Food’s Facilitators explores how modern foods and systems for food can be seen as the result of a series of administrative efforts and negotiations over how such food is produced. The authors examine laws and regulations, expertise, technologies, and media that contribute to binding the various modern industrialized food systems together. Their subject matter ranges from cookbooks and schools for housewives that have greatly influenced the Norwegian diet, to the industrial production of foods, freezer technology, date marking, and quality assessment. In addition, the authors look at the presentation of food on television as informational activity as well as debates about industrially produced ingredients and food products like margarine, artificial vanilla and farmed salmon. Through these examples the book illustrates how regulation, quality and information became necessary cornerstones in the evolution of the food industry. The authors have backgrounds in science and technology studies, history, anthropology, sociology and media science. The anthology has been edited by Terje Finstad, Stig Kvaal and Per Østby, all from the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and Håkon B. Stokland from the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research and NTNU’s Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture
Abstract: Ministers, deacons, catechists and cantors are among the church professionals laypeople meet in the context of worship, other church services, and congregational activities. These professionals are upholding a social mission, influencing church practices, setting the tone and developing programs and services within their congregations. What are the hallmarks of the different professions within the church? What insight should church professionals have into each other’s identities and areas of expertise to collaborate and participate in interdisciplinary teamwork? And how, in practical terms, should they be lead? Profession and Leadership in the Church of Norway: Organizing Work of a Church in Change provides sociological and administrative insights into general and contextual phenomena in the church professions. Relationships between professions, administration and organization in the Church of Norway are analyzed in light of empirical studies and an institutional theoretical framework. The author discusses how the professions derive appropriate ways of organizing their work. A key finding in the book is that church professions are characterized by calling, autonomy and complexity. These particular features make value-based leadership especially well-suited to the church professions. Part of the work on a new national church law includes addressing central questions about how the Church of Norway, with its extensive range of services and activities, should be led and organized. This book contributes to a broader base of knowledge about administration and the role of the church professions in this complex. Profession and Leadership in the Church of Norway will be of interest to researchers in professional studies and in organization and management, as well as practitioners: employees, church leaders and advisory council members. Thematically, the book is also relevant for students in educational programs that lead to church employment. Stephen Sirris (PhD) is a professor and leader of the Centre for Values-Based Leadership and Innovation at VID Specialized University’s Faculty of Theology, Diaconia and Leadership Studies

Abstract: Martyrs have a special status in every religion. They are "heroes" who give their lives for their ideals. Their death acquires a symbolic meaning and its own story within their own religious tradition. There is no fixed definition of 'the' martyr, in every time and situation people give it its own meaning. However, the death of the martyr is always shocking and creates a deep duality. In Dan liever dood!, experts address how we deal with martyrdom in the traditions of the five major world religions. What is meant by ""martyrdom"" in Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism? And in the secular world? Where does this talk of 'martyrs' come from, and how is their martyrdom valued?

Abstract: On 17 August 1945, two days after the Japanese surrender that also brought an end to the Second World War in Asia, Indonesia declared its independence. The declaration was not recognized by the Netherlands, which resorted to force in its attempt to take control of the inevitable process of decolonization. This led to four years of difficult negotiations and bitter warfare. In 2005, the Dutch government declared that the Netherlands should never have waged the war. The government’s 1969 position on the violence used by the Dutch armed forces during the war remained unchanged, however: although there had been ‘excesses’, on the whole the armed forces had behaved ‘correctly’. As the indications of Dutch extreme violence mounted, this official position proved increasingly difficult to maintain. In 2016, the Dutch government therefore decided to fund a broad study on the dynamics of the violence. The most important conclusions of that research programme are summarized in this book. The authors show that the Dutch armed forces used extreme violence on a structural basis, and that this was concealed both at the time and for many years after the war by the Dutch government and by society more broadly. All of this – like the entire colonial history – is at odds with the rose-tinted self-image of the Netherlands

Abstract: An image in technicolor. Fifty years of wars in Vietnam 1940-1990 gives a broad and innovative interpretation of the history of Vietnam between 1940 and 1990. Black and white characterisations, one-sided interpretations and prevailing myths are debunked. Instead, a nuanced and multifaceted picture is given in which the United States is less prominent. History is not only written by the victors and, in this case too, the history of Vietnam during this period cannot be attributed solely to Ho Chi Minh and the success of the Communists in 1975. The internal losers, that is, the other political movements and their leaders, must also be given a crucial place in Vietnam’s history. For example, the civil wars that took place between 1940 and 1990 played an unmistakable role. The older, idealised image of North Vietnam is inaccurate. This country was a dictatorial and oppressive police state. After 1954, the North Vietnamese leaders were embroiled in a fierce power struggle and were largely responsible for the war in South Vietnam. The answer to the question of who the legitimate representatives of the Vietnamese nation were also requires a more balanced judgment of non-Communist politicians, such as Bao Dai, Ngo Dinh Diem and Nguyen Van Thieu. As for the role of international players, initially, it was the Cold War that determined the United States’ interference; later, it was American credibility. In the end, it was the support from China and the Soviet Union that was the deciding factor for North Vietnam’s victory. Important new perspectives are given on the role of minorities, the meaning of ‘a third way’, the devastating effects of the strategy, the role of women and girls, and the mental and cultural aspects of the wars

Abstract: Civil drones are about to become a billion industry in Norway, and they are often touted as Norway´s new oil. But what exactly do we mean by civil drones, and how can we best ensure that they are used responsibly in society? That is the main question to be discussed in this book. Drones in Civil Society elucidates the topic from many different perspectives. Who are the various actors involved, and how do they work together? What are the differences between civil and military uses of drones? How do we differentiate between the hobby pilot and the professional drone operator, and how can students be trained in responsible, experimental investigation of drone technology? And not least: What happens to the privacy protection of the individual citizen in the midst of all this? The escalating pace of development suggests that drones will soon be an integral part of our everyday lives. What are the implications of this new reality on transportation, business, nature, surveillance, privacy, crime, warfare, and communication?

Abstract: For a long time, the war in Indonesia and the extreme violence used by the Dutch troops were not a subject that was much discussed or written about in the Netherlands. After the end of the war, the government made great efforts to avoid discussions about it or even to nip them in the bud. The revelations by East Indies veteran Joop Hueting in 1969 initially led to great commotion, resulting in the 'Excessennota' and the government position that the armed forces had behaved correctly, apart from a number of 'excesses'. That was it, until in recent decades more and more indications emerged that the armed forces had used extreme violence on a larger scale. Not only politicians but also journalists, historians and history teachers struggled with the violent decolonisation of Indonesia. The groups most affected, such as veterans, Moluccans and Indo-Europeans, were also reluctant for a long time to talk about their often bitter experiences in public. Finally, Indonesia also did not seem very interested in reviving this history of mutual violence. As a result, it was only very late, very cautiously and jerkily, that the war gained a place in the Dutch culture of remembrance

Abstract: The struggle for independence in Indonesia between 1945 and 1949 has literally and figuratively left its mark. Through images and text the authors take the reader along on their quest through people, objects and places in Indonesia and the Netherlands. This bilingual Indonesian/Dutch book focuses on the personal experiences of civilians and soldiers who experienced the conflict at close quarters. It reflects on how people from both countries look back on that time and how memories of it are kept alive or not. By doing so, the authors restore the human dimension to an intriguing history. What choices did witnesses and contemporaries make at the time, to whom did they remain loyal, and why? How do their experiences live on in the present and what meaning does this period have now, for themselves but also for others for whom this history is important

Abstract: Lecturing the Dutch in public probably makes them more stubborn rather than less stubborn. And they are already stubborn enough,' wrote a British diplomat in July 1947. How did the United States, the United Kingdom and France view the Indonesian War of Independence in the period of 1945-1949? Did they show understanding for the Dutch political and military policies or rather for the Indonesian position, and in what ways did they try to influence the parties? Where did the Dutch get their military equipment to wage war in Indonesia? In 'Diplomatie en geweld', the authors show how other countries and the recently founded United Nations were involved in the Dutch-Indonesian conflict and how they helped determine its course and outcome. In doing so they focus not only on the political and diplomatic aspects of the struggle, but also on foreign views on the use of violence by the Dutch armed forces

Abstract: One hundred years after the founding of the École Coloniale Supérieure in Antwerp, the adjacent Middelheim Museum invites Sandrine Colard, researcher and curator, to conceive an exhibition that probes silenced histories of colonialism in a site-specific way. For Colard, the term Congoville encompasses the tangible and intangible urban traces of the colony, not on the African continent but in 21st-century Belgium: a school building, a park, imperial myths, and citizens of African descent. In the exhibition and this adjoining publication, the concept Congoville is the starting point for 15 contemporary artists to address colonial history and ponder its aftereffects as black flâneurs walking through a postcolonial city. Due to the multitude of perspectives and voices, this book is both a catalogue and a reference work comprised of artistic and academic contributions. Together, the participating artists and invited authors unfold the blueprint of Congoville, an imaginary city that still subconsciously affects us, but also encourages us to envision a decolonial utopia
Abstract: During the Indonesian war of independence, reports of alleged war crimes by Dutch soldiers penetrated the Netherlands only sparsely. Even so, it was during the war that the first calls for an independent investigation into such reports were heard. After repeated calls from the Tweede Kamer, a commission of three lawyers was finally sent to Indonesia in October 1949 with the task of carrying out a non-judicial investigation into the allegations of extreme violence. For various reasons, this enquiry commission submitted reports on only two cases, which were only signed by two of the three commission members, Kees van Rij and Wim Stam. Until 1969, the existence of these reports remained hidden from parliament and the outside world. During the preparation of the 'Excessennota', the reports resurfaced and never filed reports on six other cases were found. All eight reports played a crucial role in the drafting of the note, while the report on South Sulawesi in particular would prove of great importance for the historiography of the war. Up until now, the reports by Van Rij and Stam had been hidden deep in the archives. This source publication, preceded by an extensive introduction, makes them accessible to a wider public for the first time

Abstract: Silence runs like a thread through the history of the school. In past centuries, countless teachers have urged children to be quiet. There have also been many publications in which educational authors have reflected on the value of silence for education. In this book, Pieter Verstraete explores the history of the pedagogical significance of silence using previously unexplored archival material. Have you always wanted to know where the preference for classroom silence comes from? Do you wonder why we teach reading in silence today and if it was always like that? Do you want to know how quiet and shy students used to be treated? Or are you curious why Maria Montessori thought silence classes were so important? This book fascinatingly introduces you to the multi-voiced sound of silence in the history of parenting and education

Abstract: 2020 saw the 80th anniversary of the occupation of Norway on 9 April 1940 and the 75th anniversary of Norway’s liberation on 8 May 1945. The anniversaries provided an opportunity to reflect on these central events in Norwegian history, and to take a closer look at the war for the sake of collective remembrance. This was the background for the 2020 Agder Seminar. This anthology consists of eight chapters that illuminate in different ways the relationship between memory and repression in the history of our understanding of the Second World War. The chapters are wide-ranging, from theory-based analyses of recognition as a concept and a phenomenon, to empirical studies of various groups’ struggle for recognition. The contributors represent a number of different disciplines within the social sciences

Abstract: Sápmi, the Sámi area, is transnational; it transcends four nation states, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Art and art history has been considered natural parts of a nation state’s inventory at least since the 19th century and has contributed to the production and maintenance of national identities and narratives. What is the role of the nation state in art history, and how has the national paradigm affected the presentation of Sámi art, historically and today? Focusing on the discipline of art history in Norway, the volume exposes the prevailing representation of Sámi art, duodji, and dáidda as ethnographic material and relates it to the politics of nation building in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The book examines the representation of Sámi art, artefacts, practices, materialites, actors, concepts, and themes in Norwegian Art History, to uncover some of the established disciplinary mechanisms and narratives. The central method is historiography in combination with fieldwork in archives and museums, aimed at doing art historiography in the expanded field – to move beyond the traditional textual focus and question naturalized institutional and disciplinary boundaries. This is one of very few historiographical studies of the art historical discipline in Norway, and the only one that does this by centring on Sámi traditions, items, actors, and conceptualizations

Abstract: How should we go about collaborating with children and adolescents? Young Participation: Creativity and Conflict in Planning explores how youth participation work in practical terms, in the context of urban development processes at the municipal level in Norway. From their unique perspectives, several social scientists, artists, an architect, and a young contributor discuss experiences and dilemmas of including children, teens, and young adults as contributing stakeholders on various projects. The reader will find concrete examples of participation processes and tools developed in cooperation with young people, architects, and public employees. The chapters reveal how good intentions regarding inclusion can obscure power hierarchies, friction, and conflicts of interest. Yet they also demonstrate that the potential for creativity and innovation are great when young people are invited to contribute their input in planning and developing everything from youth community centers and school grounds to parks and other outdoor spaces in local neighborhoods. This anthology will provide inspiration to researchers, students, municipal employees, urban planners, and others working collaboratively in urban and community development. Among the topics covered are participation as co-research, social entrepreneurship and participation as part of school curricula and in socio-cultural place analyses, the power of the hand in creative practices, co-location as a trend, digital and hybrid participation processes, and power plays in planning. By introducing a new model for ‘thick participation’, the anthology attempts to ensure that young citizens are not just seen and heard but are also given the opportunity to become lasting resources within their local communities. The book’s editors, senior researcher Aina Landsverk Hagen and research professor Bengt Andersen, are both based at the Work Research Institute (AFI), Oslo Metropolitan University

Abstract: The Dutch colonial past in Indonesia has had a major influence on literature. In this edited volume the Dutch East Indies literature is systematically viewed for the first time from a postcolonial perspective. Each essays starts with an introduction about the author's life and his or her relationship with the Dutch East Indies or Indonesia, after which one or more novels are analysed. In addition to famous authors such as Louis Couperus, E. du Perron and Marion Bloem, less well-known writers are also discussed. Recurring points of interest are the representation of the unequal colonial power relations and the European strategies with which the 'Other' was marginalized. ‘De postkoloniale spiegel’ provides an innovative overview of more than 160 years of Dutch East Indies literary history

Abstract: What is the state of gender equality in science and technology? Gender Equality in Academia – from Understanding to Change presents the results of a comprehensive research project and program of initiatives at the University of Oslo’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Researchers have examined gender equality within the department, looking at reasons for imbalance, and at what occurs when measures to promote equality are implemented. The book opens with an in-depth study of careers, gender issues and gender balance within academia. The study, based on questionnaires, interviews and follow-up evaluation, provides a new and updated understanding of the daily lives of academics in Norway. Among the topics covered are perceptions of equality and gender balance, effects of male dominance, sexual harassment, gender with respect to publishing, and the relationship between gender and diversity. In addition to presenting new empirical data, the book is also an innovative contribution to theoretical development within gender equality research. In the second part of the book, the authors present three working models that elucidate current mechanisms recreating gender imbalance, and challenges for gender equality. The book’s final part consists of analyses of measures taken to increase gender equality within the department and their effects, and what an organization can do to increase gender equality. The range of topics in this book make it relevant for all those concerned with gender equality in research and higher education. Researchers, administrators, students, other practitioners, and politicians will all find this book of interest.Øystein Gullvåg Holter is a professor emeritus at the University of Oslo’s Centre for Gender Research. Lotta Snickare is a researcher at both the University of Oslo’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.; Hvordan står det til med likestillingen innenfor realfag og teknologi? Abstract: The services for people with addiction and mental health problems and have received increasing attention, both in the public debate, among users and professionals and not least from political authorities. There is political agreement on the importance of prioritizing the field, when at the same time there is disagreement on whether the services will actually be better by present-day reforms. In National Policies and Local Challenges, the authors explore the organization of services for people with addiction and mental health illness, from initiatives to improve the services at the level of national government to implementing changes in local service provision by municipalities. We discuss one of the most challenging questions in the modern welfare state: How should services be organized so that both users and service providers experience them as coordinated and integrated? The authors address these issues by referring to key features of national policy and change processes that can be observed in a selection of municipalities. The book also refers to analyses of experiences with various measures and services related to work, housing and prison care and correctional services. The anthology is based on a research project that studies the coordination and integration of services for people with complex addiction and mental disorders. The book is based on political science and organizational theoretical perspectives, and aims to provide insight into the usefulness of such perspectives in the analysis of welfare state's challenges when complex needs are addressed. The target group for the book is researchers, students and employees in local government – as well as practitioners who work with users with complex and complex needs. The book is edited by Catharina Bjørkquist, professor at Østfold University College, and Helge Ramsdal, professor emeritus at Østfold University College

Abstract: Within the last two decades streaming services and digital platforms have come to dominate the distribution of recorded music. What has this transformation meant for the music industry in Norway? From Spinning to Streaming: Norwegian Music Reaching the World presents research on how artists, musicians, composers and other intermediaries within Norway’s music industry are meeting this digital reality.Digitalization has led to new possibilities for producing and distributing music, as well as for exporting music and succeeding on an international level. Yet the route out into the world via the internet can be both steep and unpredictable. By investigating ways of working, types of expertise required, as well as economic and copyright circumstances, the authors demonstrate how digital media are both important tools for creating musical works and a key engine of development in the music industry itself. The authors rely on various theoretical concepts and analytical perspectives to explore the interplay between technological, professional, social and cultural conditions in the music industry’s development. A central finding in the book is the need among several actors in the Norwegian music industry for increased specialized competence and understanding regarding rights issues. In addition, the “platformization” of the industry calls for a greater degree of professionalization and specialized expertise than the Norwegian music industry is equipped with today. From Spinning to Streaming: Norwegian Music Reaching the World will be of interest to researchers, students, politicians, decision-makers and other actors within the music industry. The book’s authors are Anja Nylund Hagen, University of Oslo; Mari Torvik Heian, Telemark Research Institute; Roy Aulie Jacobsen, Telemark Research Institute; and Bård Kleppe, Telemark Research Institute.; De siste ti årene har strømmetjenester og digitale plattformer nærmest overtatt distribusjonen av innspilt musikk.

Abstract: The Stone Age in Southeastern Norway. The Academic Program for Stone Age Research at the Museum of Cultural History comprises a general overview of excavations, carried out between 2000–2017, of 430 sites, graves, depots, hunting pits and other sites, and presents a broad and updated report on the status of research relating to the Stone Age (c. 9500–1700 BC) in the region.Insufficient knowledge has been the impetus for identification of four main areas for concerted prospective effort:• Technology• Settlement and land use• Subsistence and economy• Rituals and their practiceAlso presented in this program for Stone Age research are concrete strategies and initiatives that will contribute to filling in these knowledge gaps, advancing the field, and laying foundations for further research. The Stone Age in Southeastern Norway has been written with researchers, managers of cultural heritage and students in mind, as well as all others interested in a deep dive into our earliest history. This book will be an important reference for planning and carrying out future Stone Age excavations under the museum’s aegis. It will also serve as a foundation for guidelines the museum provides regarding conservation of our oldest cultural heritage.; Steinalderen i Sørøst-Norge. Abstract: In Norway, the outfields [utmark] are understood as mainly un-cultivated countryside areas such as forest and upland and make up over 70 per cent of the country’s land area. The outfields are the grounds for land uses such as grazing, forestry, hunting, fishing, recreation, wind- and hydropower production and mining.Major changes are taking place in the Norwegian outfields. Cabin construction, predators, grazing, and an increasing level of conflict between traditional and new users of these areas are causing heated debate about the use of these lands and their resources. In Utmark i endring [Outfields in Transformation], some of the country's leading social scientists in the field provide an overview of the significant changes and insight into how to further the ongoing debate about the future of these outlying areas. The use of the outfields has always been important to Norwegians. It is where weekend homes, wind power, mining and outdoor recreation are creating a certain quality of life – and workplaces. Yet these uses are also challenging our values regarding the natural environment, cultural values and traditional uses of these areas such as sheep and reindeer grazing.Changes in how these areas are valuated and used can lead to several conflicts of interest: Can traditional grazing survive the encroachment by other users and predators? How much expansion of second-home developments can the land tolerate? What should the limit be on adaptation for recreational activities? What aspects of the history of this territory do we value? The contributors to this book come from such various disciplines as geography, sociology, law, economics and philosophy – and therefore have different perspectives on the changes that are occurring. Collectively, the chapters in Utmark i endring make a significant contribution to existing research and can serve as a basis for further discussion of the challenges that businesses, individual users, and custodians of these lands face. Utmark i endring is thought-provoking reading for anyone with an interest in Norwegian land use and management, including students, researchers, business leaders and land managers. With its interesting and socially relevant content, this book is also highly relevant for the average socially engaged citizen. Utmark i endring has been edited by Frode Flemsæter, senior researcher at Ruralis and associate professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and Bjørn Egil Flø, senior researcher at the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO).; Det er i ferd med å skje store endringar i den norske utmarka. Kor mange fleire fritidsbustader toler utmarka?Kvar går grensa for tilrettelegging i friluftslivet?

Abstract: What gave rise to the Norse legal system? When? And where were the meeting places under this system located? These are questions that have long remained unanswered in Norwegian and Northern European history. An overriding theme of the book is establishing when this legal system arose and how it developed over time at the local and regional levels. Central topics include the localization of assembly sites in the landscape and how these sites became important to the consolidation of power structures and, later on, the royal system of governance. The ‘things’ are discussed in relation to successive political and economic structures as well as the influence of conditions within settlements and society. The book also looks at the assembly sites in their various contexts regarding localization and importance in the region, and in connection with the system’s development in Northern Europe. The Landscape of the Law provides extensive insight into the places where law and justice and related legal matters were decided in Viken. This is an aspect of Norway’s territorial division that has not been addressed in prior research. The book is relevant for researchers and history and archeology students working in such areas as legal and religious history, administrative jurisdictions, and state-formation processes, as well as local historians and other readers interested in cultural history
I Rettens landskap.

Abstract: This book presents wide-ranging video research in pedagogical contexts that have previously received little notice. Video research is, and can be employed for, so much more that standing in a classroom and filming with a camera. That is what we hope to achieve with this book – to demonstrate the inherent flexibility in video, that it can serve as one tool among many and be utilized in a variety of settings in several different ways. We want to emphasize the fact that you don’t need a professional lab with lots of equipment to do quality video research. All you need is a camera, a microphone, and a good plan for what you can, and cannot, capture in your project. Video Research in Educational Settings: Diverse Video Data in Pedagogical Research and Development is written primarily for other researchers, including those who are just beginning their research activities (such as master students and PhD candidates) and are interested in discovering how flexible, applicable and creative data collection can be with the help of video, and how rich the data material one obtains can be. The chapters represent a broad cross-disciplinary approach, yet with one common denominator: the use of video in different educational arenas, not only for data collection, but also for stimulating reflection, learning and greater expertise

Abstract: How have smart phones and social media changed life for young people today? Why do we get irritated when boys are in trouble, but worried when girls are? How do Muslim youth really feel about being called a ‘goddamned terrorist’?YOUTH reveals what it’s like to be a young person in today’s world. We gain new empirical information on life within the context of family, school, and sports. We are invited to drinking parties where sexual boundaries are tested. We also tag along with a group of guys on a hunting trip where the shotgun shells are high gauge. And: Is it true that rates of anxiety and depression have increased? Or that gender identity has become so fluid that more and more young people believe they are neither ‘girl’ nor ‘boy’?The book details some distinct trends – a school that disciplines students in new ways, less alcohol consumption and problematic behavior, disinclination toward early sex. We also see a fascinating political activism. It is the young who are on the frontlines of the climate crisis battle.Publication of YOUTH also marks the 30th anniversary of the leading center for youth research in Norway, established at NOVA, the Norwegian Social Research institute at Oslo Metropolitan University. This book will be relevant to researchers, students, teachers and all those who work on behalf of young people from the national to the local level, as well as politicians, journalists and others interested in research-based information about how young people actually live today.Guro Ødegård is a senior researcher and institute leader at OsloMet’s Norwegian Social Research institute, NOVA. Willy Pedersen is professor of sociology at the University of and a NOVA affiliate.; Hvordan har smarttelefonen og sosiale medier endret livet til dagens unge? Abstract: In this 30th edition of the Yearbook on Poverty and Social Exclusion, we look back on 30 years of fighting poverty. How have the poverty figures evolved? We take a closer look at access to justice, education and housing. Next, we are looking for an answer to the question of what constitutes a structural poverty policy. Can the law be of any significance here? This year's theme section is dedicated to the coronapandemic and its link to poverty. Subsequently, a number of civil society organisations are given a chance to express their expertise and findings. In a final section, the Yearbook presents an overview of figures on poverty and social exclusion

Abstract: The requiem (or the death mass) is one of the oldest and longest surviving genres in Western music history. For hundreds of years it only existed in its original Gregorian guise, but from about 1450 many great composers were inspired to write of masterly new death masses Dies Irae introduces the reader to these masterpieces in an accessible way, without any prior musical knowledge being required. After an introduction to the meaning and structure of the text and music of the ancient Latin Mass for the Dead, a chronicle in three parts follows that guides the reader through the history of the requiem. In separate chapters, all the major and well-known requiems (including by Mozart, Brahms, Verdi, Fauré, Britten and Webber), as well as some less popular but equally poignant works (such as the requiems by Ockeghem, Schütz, Weill, Ligeti, Stravinsky and Zimmermann). Each requiem is discussed according to a fixed pattern, so that the reader can freely browse through different periods and compositions: first each work is situated music-historically, followed by a short discussion of each part separately. By linking the discussions to one reference recording per work, the reader can immediately test the explanation against listening practice. Under the direction of Pieter Bergé, and with the cooperation of Jan Christiaens, all contributions to 'Dies Irae. Chronicle of the Requiem' written by authors who are affiliated with the Musicology research unit of KU Leuven as teachers, researchers or alumnus

Abstract: During the First World War, the German occupier tried to split Belgium internally. This was done by pursuing a Flamenpolitik, a policy aimed at scaring the Flemish, or at least the Flemish movement, against Belgium. That worked, because a small number of Flemish supporters, the so-called activists, did indeed collaborate. From the late summer of 1914, Berlin in the occupied country would incessantly bombard the Flemish movement with a large-scale media campaign. The German services, supported by their Austrian allies, mainly made use of pamphlets and the written press, not only in Belgium but also in the neutral Netherlands. In the summer of 1915 activism was a fact: an anti-Belgian Flemish nationalism, the consequences of which have been felt to date, had seen the light of day. The propaganda underlying it was so ingenious and clever that it not only convinced contemporaries, but still misleads historians even more than a century later. It is a fine example of “fake news” avant la lettre

Abstract: «No seer eg atter slike Fjøll og Dalar, / som deim eg i min fyrste Ungdom saag».

Abstract: "This book is a study of elections to the representative organ of Norway's indigenous people, the Sámi. Based on quantitative and qualitative research, the anthology examines various aspects of elections to the Sámi Parliament, both in general and regarding the 2017 election in particular. The nine chapters delve into a wide range of topics, from voter behaviour and election results to more fundamental questions regarding indigenous representation and organizing in Norway. The book covers five main themes. First, Sámi identity and criteria for voter registration. What are considered acceptable grounds for claiming to be Sámi, and what criteria do people use when judging others as Sámi or non-Sámi? When is one ‘Sámi enough’ to qualify for the right to vote? These questions have a bearing on the very core of Sámi politics: who should be allowed to choose representatives on behalf of the Sámi people? Second, Sámi civil society. How do organizations that represent Sámi persons and Sámi interests relate to the Sámi Parliament? Third, voter turnout. How do we explain non-voting in a system where, unlike those for other elections in Norway, one must actively register in advance to be able to vote? And what about the fact that voters in municipalities with fewer than 30 registered voters must vote in advance? Do these circumstances depress voter turnout? Fourth, the party-political landscape. What differentiates supporters of the different parties? Are there clear differences that make it easier for voters to identify the distinctions between the parties? Finally, elections and voter information. Where do voters find information about this election? We look specifically at how parties and voters find each other in South Norway, the largest constituency in the country, and yet one in which Sámi parliamentary elections are rarely covered by the media. Sámi Parliamentary Elections: Identity, Participation, Party Politics will be relevant for everyone interested in indigenous representation and participation generally, and the Sámi democratic system in Norway particularly, especially students, academics, journalists and those who are actively engaged in Sámi politics."

Abstract: Migration of literature across regional and national borders is a thriving research topic. This issue of LLS is the first general overview of the reception of Dutch-language literature in Czech translation in the period 1848-1948: of the novels of Conscience, in which similarities were found between the language struggle of the Flemish with their French-speaking elite and the struggle of the Czechs with their German-speaking elite, about literature at the time of both world wars, in the period in between, when Johan Fabricius and Felix Timmermans were authors beloved by Czechs, to the end of the unlimited reception of Dutch-language works by Soviet influences and the norms of the new socialist realism , the Sorela. This fascinating study offers new insights into the influence of Flemish and Dutch works in Europe, but it also examines the parallels between literature, politics and society

Abstract: " What are the specific challenges that teachers and school leaders face, and how do they feel about their working conditions? These are among the themes of the international TALIS study. The authors of this book take a close look at the 2018 survey that was carried out in 48 countries, including all of the Nordic countries. Topics explored include skills development for school administrators, innovation in schools and its significance, and use of IT in schools and in teaching. The book also addresses collaboration between teachers, and it looks at newly educated teachers’ motivation and job satisfaction. The TALIS 2018 results are also viewed in relation to other Norwegian research in this field and can therefore lead to useful discussions and observations about Norwegian schools and Norwegian teachers and school administrators. The objective is to contribute to increased awareness of how schools function – and how they can be improved. The book is meant to inform not only school employees, teachers and administrators, but also those responsible for shaping national educational policy and the schools of the future."
Abstract: "Hvilke utfordringer står lærere og skoleledere overfor?

Abstract: "How does the public sector manage the vast sums spent annually on goods and services? For individual municipalities, counties, and state agencies it is, in practical terms, about obtaining resources that enable them to deliver the services they are obligated to deliver. For Parliament and the government, it is not just about securing the production of goods and services here and now, but about how we ensure good and consistent standards of welfare in the future as well. In addition, there are high expectations that purchases occur in sustainable, efficient, and intelligent ways and that suppliers are challenged to think creatively – to be innovative. As for buyers, a greater degree of professionalization within public procurement practices is expected. In this anthology we have brought together several authors who are contributing new research focused on how public sector procurements are carried out in Norway. Topics range from questions around outsourcing, how the procurement function is organized, contract administration, purchaser competence, and the use of data analytics. Readers will also find a review of Norwegian research on public procurement published in international journals over the past two decades. "

Abstract: "This book takes the reader on a historical and theological journey through intense awakenings, decisive church foundations and dramatic schisms in southwestern Norway from the 1820s to the present. Based on extensive source material, the book provides new perspectives on the history of the so-called ‘firm believers’ and a nuanced presentation of their theological development from a vigorous revival during the first half of the 19th century to today’s closed religious communities. The Old Paths: The History of ‘Menigheten Samfundet’, ‘Det Almindelige Samfund’ and other ‘firm believers’ describes a diverse religious tradition marked by deep devotion and intellectual rigour, while also giving the reader a glimpse of prominent church leaders, charismatic preachers and devoted believers. Many in Rogaland and Agder today are familiar with ‘lomelendingane’ – adherents of the Menigheten Samfundet sect, named after its founder, Bernt Lomeland – in Kristiansand and Egersund, and such similarly named groups of followers as the ‘perane’ and ‘larsane’, also in Egersund. All of these groups have traditionally been referred to as ‘the firm’ or ‘the firm believers’. Most works on Norwegian church history include brief descriptions of ‘the firm believers’, but no scholarly work entirely devoted to their origins and history has previously been published. As such, this book represents the most comprehensive and updated work on ‘the firm believers’ published to date and it therefore constitutes an important contribution to Norwegian church history. This book will be of value to scholars, students and others with an interest in Norwegian church history, sociology of religion, and closed religious communities. Kyrkjefag Profil is a series established by the Department of Religious Studies at Volda University College. This book is number 41 in the series."
