Abstract: "Over the course of the past century, sexual liberation has transformed the way in which most of us regard our bodies and live our sexual lives. Now a preeminent psychoanalytic theoretician on sex and gender discusses what has gone into this unquiet revolution - the roles played by sexologist and psychoanalysts, antibiotics and birth control, the liberation movements, and Freud's insight that sex has as much to do with the mind as it does with the genitals."--BOOK JACKET

Abstract: "Centering on five life stories by Chinese women activists born just after the turn of this century, this first history of Chinese May Fourth feminism disrupts the Chinese Communist Party's master narrative of Chinese women's liberation, reconfigures the history of the Chinese Enlightenment from a gender perspective, and addresses the question of how feminism engendered social change cross-culturally. In this multilayered book, the first-person narratives are complemented by a history of the discursive process and the author's sophisticated intertextual readings. Together, the parts form a fascinating historical portrait of how educated Chinese men and women actively deployed and appropriated ideologies from the West in their pursuit of national salvation and self-emancipation. As Wang demonstrates, feminism was embraced by men as instrumental to China's modernity and by women as pointing to a new way of life."--Publisher description

Abstract: While the typical Japanese male politician glides through his district in air-conditioned taxis, the typical female voter trundles along the side streets on a simple bicycle. In this first ethnographic study of the politics of the average female citizen in Japan, Robin LeBlanc argues that this taxi-bicycle contrast reaches deeply into Japanese society. To study the relationship between gender and liberal democratic citizenship, LeBlanc conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork in suburban Tokyo among housewives, volunteer groups, consumer cooperative movements, and the members of a committee to reelect a female Diet member who used her own housewife status as the key to victory. LeBlanc argues that contrary to popular perception, Japanese housewives are ultimately not without a political world.Full of new and stimulating material, engagingly written, and deft in its weaving of theoretical perspectives with field research, this study will not only open up new dialogues between gender theory and broader social science concerns but also provide a superb introduction to politics in Japan as a whole

Abstract: In this analysis of three generations of women in a Chinese silk factory, Lisa Rofel interweaves the intimate details of her observations with a broad-ranging critique of the meaning of modernity in a postmodern age. Exploring attitudes toward work, marriage, society, and culture, she convincingly connects the changing meanings of the modern in official discourse to the stories women tell about themselves and what they make of their lives

Abstract: Part 1Feminist Methodology --Part 2Narrative Interpretation.
Abstract: Under the Sign of Hope examines the practices of life history, ethnographic fieldwork, and interpretation of women's narratives, ultimately asserting the importance of self-reflexivity for feminist methodology. Bloom takes the stance that what is critical to research is an ability to analyze the complexities of researcher-participant relationships and the limitations of narrative interpretation

Abstract: "In 1965, when psychologists Sandra and Daryl Bem met and married, they were determined to function as truly egalitarian partners and to raise their children in accordance with gender-liberated, anti-homophobic, and sex-positive feminist ideals." "This book by Sandra Bem, an autobiographical account of the Bems' nearly thirty-year marriage, is both a personal history of the Bems' past and a social history of a key period in feminism's past. It is also a look into feminism's future, because the Bems' children, Emily and Jeremy, now in their early twenties, speak in the book as well."--BOOK JACKET

Abstract: This collection introduces the reader to the women of Arab/Palestinian society, their social and political roles, and the challenges they face. In her introduction, Suha Sabbagh outlines the role of women in the struggles of Gaza and the West Bank. She demonstrates that neither the international media nor Arab commentators have accurately assessed the contributions of women's institutions or the support of traditional women for the Intifada. What impact will the politicization of these traditional women have on the predicated social transformations in the emerging Palestinian state? Will the women seek to alter their role in society, and what will be the response to their attempts? The essays in this multidisciplinary work, written from an "insider's" perspective, seek to answer these questions

Abstract: Based on one of the most extensive scientific surveys of race ever conducted, this book investigates the relationship between racial perceptions and policy choices in America. The contributors - leading scholars in the fields of public opinion, race relations, and political behavior - clarify and explore images of African-Americans that white Americans hold and the complex ways that racial stereotypes shape modern political debates about such issues as affirmative action, housing, welfare, and crime

Abstract: This book is about the women of Belize, Central America, and how a few of them are working to change the gender rules, ideas, attitudes, and behaviors that govern the meaning of what is to be a woman in their communities and country. Others, at a different stage, are in the process of figuring out how to do the same. Everyday around the world, in India, Africa, Latin America, Europe and the United States, women confront the power and control of gender. They face personal and social constraints that are generally communicated through words, cultural symbols and practices, individual deeds, and institutional policies. In response, some women have moved to set limits to the degree to which these cultural elements determine their lives

Abstract: State formation, power, and knowledge have not traditionally been understood as the subjects of women's history, but they are the themes that permeate this book. Individually and together, the essays explore how gender serves to legitimize particular constructions of power and knowledge and to meld these into accepted practice and state policy. They show how the study of women's history has moved from the discovery of women to an evaluation of social processes and institutions
Abstract: This outstanding collection of fifteen original essays represents innovative work by some of the most influential scholars in the field of women's history. Covering a broad sweep of history from the American Revolution to contemporary times and ranging over the fields of legal, social, political, and cultural history, this book, according to its editors, "intrudes into regions of the American historical narrative from which women have been excluded or in which gender relations were not thought to play a part."
