    Kurzfassung: Die mit der Wiedervereinigung einhergehende Veränderung der wirtschaftlichen und politischen Strukturen wirkte sich vielfältig und nachhaltig auf das Leben der Bevölkerung in Ostdeutschland aus. Auf individueller Ebene wurden dabei Anreize für einen Lebensstilwandel geschaffen. Auf der Grundlage ökonomischer Modelle werden in dieser Arbeit die Wirkungen ökonomischer Anreize auf das individuelle Gesundheitsverhalten vor dem Hintergrund einer wirtschaftlichen Transformation untersucht. Anhand von Daten des Sozioökonomischen Panels (SOEP) wird analysiert, ob sich der Lebensstil ostdeutscher Bürger dem der Bevölkerung im Westen angenähert hat. Es läßt sich aufzeigen, daß auch mehr als zehn Jahre nach der "Wende" der ostdeutsche Transformationsprozeß als nicht abgeschlossen gelten kann.

    Kurzfassung: Die Medien repräsentieren den älteren türkischen Migranten oft als traditionalistischen "Islam-Macho", der die Integration seiner Frau und seiner Töchter in die Gastgesellschaft bremst oder aktiv behindert. Diese weit verbreitete Stereotype beruht überwiegend auf "Bildern aus zweiter Hand". Im Unterschied dazu rückt die Publikation von Margret Spohn die türkischen Männer der ersten Migrantengeneration explizit in den Mittelpunkt der Analysen, wo sie als "Experten ihrer eigenen Geschichte" ausführlich selbst zu Wort kommen. Das feine Geflecht der hier erzählten und sensibel interpretierten Lebensgeschichten gibt Raum für die Reflexionen der Befragten über ihr Verhältnis zu den eigenen Eltern, zur Ehefrau, zu den Kindern und zu ihrem Leben in "zwei Heimaten". Damit liefert die Arbeit einen Schlüssel zu einem besseren Verständnis der Männer dieser Migrantengeneration, die vor fast einem halben Jahrhundert das Wagnis auf sich genommen haben, sich und ihren Familien in einem fremden Land eine Zukunft aufzubauen

    Kurzfassung: Das Konzept einer redistributiven Sozialpolitik scheint schon seit längerem in Deutschland an seine Grenzen gestoßen zu sein: Die durchgehend mit einer erheblichen Umverteilungskomponente versehenen sozialen Sicherungssysteme haben einerseits zu unerträglichen Belastungen insbesondere der laufenden Arbeitseinkommen geführt, ohne jedoch andererseits den Wunsch nach sozialer Gerechtigkeit nachhaltig erfüllen zu können. Ironischerweise scheint es sogar so zu sein, daß die Unzufriedenheit mit dem Sozialstaat aus einer wie auch immer definierten "Gerechtigkeitsperspektive" mit dem Ausmaß der Umverteilung wächst. Dieses ernüchternde Ergebnis hat in der Vergangenheit immer wieder zu wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen und -politischen Diskussionen darüber geführt, ob die traditionelle Umverteilungspolitik mit laufenden Einkommen als Zielgröße und Aktionsparameter redistributiver Maßnahmen nicht schon vom Ansatz her verfehlt ist. --
    Kurzfassung: In diese Diskussion reiht sich die Dissertation von Thomas Wilke ein. Der Autor geht von der in einem theoretischen Teil abgeleiteten Hypothese aus, daß nicht das Arbeitseinkommen als Ergebnis der individuellen Leistungsfähigkeit und Leistungswilligkeit Gegenstand der Umverteilung sein darf, sondern vielmehr die individuellen Einkommenserzielungschancen, die durch das beim einzelnen gebildete Humankapital und gegebenenfalls geerbte oder geschenkte Vermögen maßgeblich beeinflußt werden. Chancengleichheit und nicht Egalität von Arbeitseinkommen ist folglich das durch eine Redistributionspolitik zu verfolgende Ziel. Damit aber rücken intergenerative Transfers und ihre umverteilende Besteuerung als Alternative zur Einkommensumverteilung in den Blickpunkt. --
    Kurzfassung: Thomas Wilke beschäftigt sich intensiv mit einer theoretischen Diskussion unterschiedlicher Motive bezüglich intergenerativer Transfers. Durch eine sich auf Daten des Sozio-ökonomischen Panels und des Europäischen Haushaltspanels stützende empirische Untersuchung wird daran anschließend der Frage nachgegangen, ob und inwieweit man mit einer Erbschaft- und Schenkungsteuer die vom Staat wahrzunehmende Umverteilungsfunktion effizienter und gerechter ausfüllen kann. Der Autor kommt zu dem Ergebnis, daß dies nur dann gelingt, wenn ausschließlich Erbschaften, nicht aber Schenkungen zwischen Generationen besteuert werden

    Kurzfassung: Latin American market-oriented reforms along the lines of the Washington Consensus need to be supplemented by a number of social policies to achieve a more equitable society. While there has been considerable progress in enhancing the efficiency, much less has been made with regard to improving the social situation. Germany has a long and successful tradition of a social market economy. However, developments in recent years have shown various pitfalls in the current economic and social security systems and the need for appropriate adjustments. Therefore, Germany as well as most Latin American countries have to look for new solutions to combine social justice with economic efficiency. This volume addresses some of the most pertinent problems in this respect.

    Kurzfassung: Individuals, Institutions, and Markets offers a theory of how the institutional framework of a society emerges and how markets within institutions work. The book shows that both social institutions, defined as the rules of the game, and exchange processes can be analyzed along a common theoretical structure. Mantzavinos' proposal is that a problem solving model of individual behavior inspired by the cognitive sciences provides such a unifying theoretical structure. Integrating the latest scholarship in economics, sociology, political science, law, and anthropology, Mantzavinos offers a genuine political economy showing how social institutions affect economic outcomes

    Kurzfassung: In an increasingly globalised world, economic and cultural imperatives can be seen as two of the most powerful forces shaping human behaviour. This book considers the relationship between economics and culture both as areas of intellectual discourse, and as systems of societal organisation. Adopting a broad definition of culture, it explores the economic dimensions of culture, and the cultural context of economics. The book is built on a foundation of value theory, developing the twin notions of economic and cultural value as underlying principles for integrating the two fields. Ideas of cultural capital and sustainability are discussed, especially as means of analysing the particular problems of cultural heritage, drawing parallels with the treatment of natural capital in ecological economics. The book goes on to discuss the economics of creativity in the production of cultural goods and services; culture in economic development; the cultural industries; and cultural policy

    Kurzfassung: Rajnarayan Chandavarkar presents the first major study of the relationship between labour and capital in India's economic development in the early twentieth-century. He explores the emergence of capitalism in the region, the development of the cotton textile industry, its particular problems in the 1920s and 1930s and the mill owners' and the state's responses to them. The author also investigates how a labour force was formed in Bombay - its rural roots, urban networks, industrial organisation and the way in which it shaped capitalist strategies. In a subject dominated by the assumption of unities, Rajnarayan Chandavarkar convincingly demonstrates the fragmentation of class, on the side of both capital and labour. Their interaction sometimes exacerbated their internal differences. But, the author also asks on what terms, to what ends, and under what circumstances solidarities could be forged between workers

    Kurzfassung: Moishe Postone undertakes a fundamental reinterpretation of Karl Marx's mature critical theory. He calls into question many of the presuppositions of traditional Marxist analyses and offers new interpretations of Marx's central arguments. He does so by developing concepts aimed at grasping the essential character and historical development of modern society, and also at overcoming the familiar dichotomies of structure and action, meaning and material life. These concepts lead him to an original analysis of the nature and problems of capitalism and provide the basis for a critique of 'actually existing socialism'. According to this new interpretation, Marx identifies the core of the capitalist system with an impersonal form of social domination generated by labor and the industrial production process are characterized as expressions of domination generated by labor itself and not simply with market mechanisms and private property. Proletarian labor and the industrial production process are characterized as expressions of domination rather than as means of human emancipation. This reinterpretation entails the form of economic growth and the structure of social labor in modern society to the alienation and domination at the heart of capitalism. This reformulation, Postone argues, provides the foundation for a critical social theory that is more adequate to late twentieth-century capitalism

    Kurzfassung: This 1992 book is a comprehensive study of the position of Soviet industrial workers during the Khrushchev period. Dr Filtzer examines the main features of labour policy, shop-floor relations between workers and managers, and the position of women workers. He argues that the main concern of labour policy was to remotivate an industrial population left demoralized by the Stalinist terror. This 'de-Stalinization' had to be carried out without undermining the power and property relations on which the Stalinist system had been built. The author convincingly demonstrates how labour policy was thus limited to superficial gestures of liberalization and tinkering with incentive schemes. Rather than achieving any lasting effects, the Khrushchev period saw the consolidation of a long-term decline into economic stagnation. The labour problems under Khrushchev are shown to be the same as those which confronted Mikhail Gorbachev and his ill-fated perestroika, thus helping to explain the failures of Gorbachev's policies

    Anmerkung: "Continuing his groundbreaking analysis of economic structures, Douglass North develops an analytical framework for explaining the ways in which institutions and institutional change affect the performance of economies, both at a given time and over time. Institutions exist, he argues, due to the uncertainties involved in human interaction; they are the constraints devised to structure that interaction. Yet, institutions vary widely in their consequences for economic performance; some economies develop institutions that produce growth and development, while others develop institutions that produce stagnation. North first explores the nature of institutions and explains the role of transaction and production costs in their development. The second part of the book deals with institutional change. Institutions create the incentive structure in an economy, and organisations will be created to take advantage of the opportunities provided within a given institutional framework. North argues that the kinds of skills and knowledge fostered by the structure of an economy will shape the direction of change and gradually alter the institutional framework. He then explains how institutional development may lead to a path-dependent pattern of development. In the final part of the book, North explains the implications of this analysis for economic theory and economic history. He indicates how institutional analysis must be incorporated into neo-classical theory and explores the potential for the construction of a dynamic theory of long-term economic change"--Provided by publisher
