Abstract: This book offers critical reflections on the intersections between criminology and queer scholarship, and charts future directions for this field. Since their development over twenty-five years ago, queer scholarship and politics have been hotly contested fields, equally embraced and dismissed. Amid calls for criminology and criminal justice institutions to respond more effectively to the injustices faced by LGBTIQ people, criminologists have recently developed a Queer Criminology and turned to queer scholarship in the process. Through a sweeping analysis of critical criminologies, as well as issues as varied as shame and utopian thought, Matthew Ball points to the many opportunities for criminology to engage further with the more politically disruptive strands of queer scholarship. His analysis highlights that criminology and queer theory are 'dangerous bedfellows', and that navigating the tension between them is central to confronting the social and criminal injustices experienced by LGBTIQ communities. This book will be of particular interest for scholars of criminology, criminal justice, LGBTIQ studies, gender studies and critical theory

Abstract: At a time where the relevance of the social sciences is under threat, this innovative book offers a speculative experimentation on the philosophy and methodology of the social sciences to rethink what 'relevance' is, and to cultivate a new ethos of knowledge-making for an eventful world. Engaging a diverse a range of thinkers including Alfred North Whitehead, Gilles Deleuze and Isabelle Stengers, as well as the American pragmatists John Dewey and William James, Martin Savransky challenges longstanding assumptions in the social sciences and argues that relevance is an event that is part and parcel of the immanent and situated processes by which things come to matter. He develops new conceptual tools for cultivating an empiricist ethos of inquiry that is attuned to the question of how things come to matter- an ethics that turns social inquiry into a veritable adventure. The result is an original and rigorous book that infuses knowledge-practices in the social sciences with new sensibilities, creative possibilities, and novel habits of thinking, knowing, and feeling

Abstract: ‘At last we have a definitive guide to the marriage between contemporary women’s fiction and the Gothic, which gleefully plunges the romance plot into darkness and prises heroines away from constraining narratives in an endless series of reinventions from the Cartesque through to the post-colonial.’ - Marie Mulvey-Roberts, University of the West of England, UK This book revives and revitalises the literary Gothic in the hands of contemporary women writers. It makes a scholarly, lively and convincing case that the Gothic makes horror respectable, and establishes contemporary women’s Gothic fictions in and against traditional Gothic. The book provides new, engaging perspectives on established contemporary women Gothic writers, with a particular focus on Angela Carter, Margaret Atwood and Toni Morrison. It explores how the Gothic is malleable in their hands and is used to demythologise oppressions based on difference in gender and ethnicity. The study presents new Gothic work and new nuances, critiques of dangerous complacency and radical questionings of what is safe and conformist in works as diverse as Twilight (Stephenie Meyer) and A Girl Walks Home Alone (Ana Lily Amirpur), as well as by Anne Rice and Poppy Brite. It also introduces and critically explores postcolonial, vampire and neohistorical Gothic and women’s ghost stories

Abstract: In a recent study, ninety percent of women stated that they 'expect to transition' within the next five years. Rather than be frustrated, Rosetti argues that with thought and some elbow grease, transition is not only healthy but rewarding. Women and Transition is a step-by-step how-to guide that every woman can learn from.
Abstract: Have you ever experienced a job loss, an empty nest, menopause, childbirth, marriage, divorce, infertility, retirement, a career change, a geographic move, a change in health status or other similarly weighty life event? Each one can begin a transition, a unique opportunity to realign your life, nourish the person you are, and live the life you imagine. This book helps readers understand transition and presents a unique step-by-step roadmap every woman can use to make transition positive, optimistic and approachable throughout her life. Even with a Harvard MBA and a track record of great success behind her, author Linda Rossetti faced a wrenching transition after realizing the career path she had spent years building was no longer suitable or sustainable. She was in her mid-forties, a senior executive at a Fortune 500 Company with countless hours logged in conference rooms, hotel rooms and on airplanes, when both her family and professional life began to unravel. She sought out change - like many women - a new job, less travel, more time at home, but quickly realized this was not the answer. Rossetti's transition story coupled with the frustration felt by millions of women with similar experiences set Rossetti on a course to search for answers. Rossetti found the answers in the transition experiences of hundreds of women whom she interviewed over three years. WOMEN & TRANSITION was born out of those conversations. The story is told in the author's own voice and the voices of many of these women who shared their heartfelt transition stories with her. WOMEN & TRANSITION defines transition, introduces a toolkit for transitioning, and delivers a roadmap for women from all walks of life to take the next steps on their own journey. Woven throughout this valuable transition blueprint are real - human - stories that constantly inspire and remind us that we are not alone in this journey. WOMEN & TRANSITION is a chronicle of modern day women's experience and an irreplaceable guide that will help women of all ages. This book was created for women to take on transition and to find a path that opens opportunity. Abstract: Although Japanese economic development is often discussed, less attention is given to social development, and much less to gender related issues. By examining Japanese experiences related to gender, the authors seek insights relevant to the current developing countries. Simultaneously, the book points out the importance for Japanese society to draw lessons from the creativity and activism of women in developing countries

Abstract: This book provides fresh insight into rural poverty in Latin America. It draws on six case studies of recent rural household surveys - for Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Honduras, Paraguay, and Peru - and several thematic studies examining land, labour, rural financial markets, the environments, and disadvantaged groups. Recognizing the heterogeneity within the rural economy, the studies characterize three important groups - small farmers, landless farm workers, and rural non-farm workers - and provide quantitative and qualitative analyses of the determinants of household income

Abstract: How many people have migrated from central and Eastern Europe since the 1989 revolutions? Are fears of mass migration from eastern Europe well-founded? What are the causes and effects, in both the sending and receiving countries, of such population movements? What are the policy reactions in the East and the West and how is this phenomenon likely to develop and to be regulated over the near future? These are some of the key questions addressed in this book by sixteen east and west European experts on international migration
