    Abstract: This volume takes examples from Morocco, Egypt, Palestine, Iraq, Syria and Germany to demonstrate the potential and the limitations of youth research in the Arab world and beyond. The study of young adults is still underdeveloped as an area of research. Despite growing awareness of its vital significance since September 11th, not a single comprehensive youth study exists for an Arab country. Current research is often scattered, partly inaccessible, and to a great extent concentrates on specialized topics.
    Abstract: It is crucial, not merely for Arab societies, to know more about the attitude of almost two-thirds of the Arab population to social and political issues. Apart from one qualitative contribution on young men in Iraq, the volume focuses less on data analysis than on data collection and methodology in very difficult surroundings. The majority of Arab states do not allow opinion surveys to be conducted in their countries. Both major inter-national research centres and individual researchers have had severe problems.

    Abstract: In this study, e-learning support strategies of three innovative American research universities are investigated. The findings from over 50 interviews are presented in form of detailed qualitative case studies. On the basis of a comparative analysis recommendations are formulated on how structural and cultural conditions for e-learning support may be derived in order to effectively reach out to the faculty. The necessity of adequate strategic management practice on different levels is illustrated. This study was motivated by the current e-learning developments in German-speaking Europe. Hence, the potential and the limitations of a transfer of the study findings to the Swiss context is thoroughly considered.

    Abstract: Die Funktionen und Bedeutungen von Kleider-Mode gehen über die reine Demonstration von Status und Prestige weit hinaus; sie reichen von Zeitkultur-Aspekten, dem momentanen "Style", über komunikative bis hin zu kulturellen Aspekten und Funktionen. Mode erfüllt also ganz unterschiedliche Zwecke, sie ist Mittel zur Selbstdarstellung und -inszenierung ebenso wie Ausdruck der Lebens- und Denkweise einer Gruppe von Menschen in einer Zeit, also eine Art "moderne Kultur". Seit den 70er Jahren stößt man in der Soziologie wie in der Konsumentenforschung verstärkt auf die Fehlannahme, Statussymbole und demonstrativer Konsum würden, aufgrund der allgemeinen Wohlstandszunahme, zunehmend an Relevanz verlieren. Zwar verlieren Statussymbole durch ihre Popularisierung in der Tat an Wert, allerdings führt der massenweise Zugriff durch breite Bevölkerungsschichten eher zu einer neuen Unübersichtlichkeit in der "bunten Warenwelt", die dem Betrachter ein geschultes Differenzierungsvermögen abverlangt. Die Vorstellungen darüber, was "Staat macht" und was nicht, variieren von Milieu zu Milieu bzw. von Lebensstil zu Lebensstil. Ziel ist es dabei nicht, jedermann zu gefallen, sondern den Idealen der Bezugsgruppe ("peer group") zu entsprechen und sich von anderen durch bestimmte Symbole (z. B. Kleidung), zu distanzieren. Dies kann über die Adaption bestimmter Moden, Modestile und "Styles" geschehen (bzw. deren Negierung), über den persönlichen Umgang (Bezugsgruppen), das Freizeitverhalten ("Lifestyle") und vieles mehr. Weiterhin unterscheiden sich die persönlichen (bzw. gruppenspezifischen) Wertvorstellungen und Symbole mit dem Alter, der Schichtzugehörigkeit, dem Geschlecht etc., also sowohl mit äußeren, sozio-strukturellen Rahmenbedingungen als auch mit individuellen Merkmalen und Präferenzen. Unter dem Strich hat das Ausmaß des Status- und Prestigestrebens durch demonstrativen Konsum also, allen Einschränkungen zum Trotz, keineswegs an Relevanz verloren. Die in modernen Industriegesellschaften nach wie vor existente soziale Ungleichheit sorgt überdies dafür, dass Statussymbole weiterhin wichtig bleiben, insbesondere vor dem Hintergrund postmoderner Differenzierung und Pluralisierung. Damit ist das soziale Prestige in modernen Konsumgesellschaften weiterhin abhängig vom Konsumniveau und -stil einer Person und verstärkt den Hang zum demonstrativen, geltungsbetonten Konsum.

    Abstract: This article analyses the extent to which changes in household composition over the life course affect the gender division of labour. It identifies and analyses cross-country disparities between France, Italy, Sweden and United States, using most recent data available from the Time Use National Surveys. We focus on gender differences in the allocation of time between market work, domestic work and leisure over the life-cycle. In order to map the life-cycle, we distinguish between nine key cross-country comparable life stages according to age and family structure such as exiting parental home, union formation, parenthood, and retiring from work. By using appropriate regression techniques (Tobit with selection, Tobit and OLS), we show large discrepancies in the gender division of labour at the different life stages. This gender gap exists in all countries at any stage of the life course, but is usually smaller at the two ends of the age distribution, and larger with parenthood. Beyond social norms, the impact of parenthood on time allocation varies across countries, being smaller in those where work-family balance policies are more effective and traditionally well-established. -- Time use ; gender ; life-cycle ; paid and unpaid work

    Abstract: Kleider machen Leute - dieses allgemein bekannte Sprichwort bringt es nicht nur auf den Punkt, es ist auch nach wie vor aktuell. Dies bestätigt auch die neue Outfit-Studie des Spiegel-Verlages, nach der Kleidung für 92% der Frauen zwischen 14 und 64 Jahren wichtig oder sehr wichtig ist. Dabei übernehmen Marken in der immer unüberschaubarer werdenden Marken und Produktvielfalt zunehmend eine Art Orientierungsfunktion. Doch gehen die Funktionen und Bedeutungen von Kleider-Mode über die reine Demonstration von Status und Prestige weit hinaus; sie reichen von Zeitkultur-Aspekten, dem momentanen Style , über komunikative bis hin zu kulturellen Aspekten und Funktionen. Mode erfüllt also ganz unterschiedliche Zwecke, sie ist Mittel zur Selbstdarstellung und inszenierung ebenso wie Ausdruck der Lebens- und Denkweise einer Gruppe von Menschen in einer Zeit, also eine Art moderne Kultur . Seit den 70er Jahren stösst man in der Soziologie wie in der Konsumentenforschung verstärkt auf die Fehlannahme, Statussymbole und demonstrativer Konsum würden, aufgrund der allgemeinen Wohlstandszunahme, zunehmend an Relevanz verlieren. Zwar verlieren Statussymbole durch ihre Popularisierung in der Tat an Wert, allerdings führt der massenweise Zugriff durch breite Bevölkerungsschichten eher zu einer neuen Unübersichtlichkeit in der bunten Warenwelt , die dem Betrachter ein geschultes Differenzierungsvermögen abverlangt. Die nach wie vor existenten sozialen Unterschiede sorgen überdies dafür, dass genügend Spielraum für Statussymbole übrig bleibt. So ist es immer noch möglich, sich aus dem Überangebot an Waren die teuerste Variante oder Marke auszusuchen (z.B. Rolex-Uhr, Armani-Anzug). Diese Stilisierung des Lebens , die in der Vermodung des Konsums gipfelt, findet sich in allen sozialen Schichten, Milieus und Gruppen. Die Vorstellungen darüber, was Staat macht und was nicht, variieren allerdings von Milieu zu Milieu bzw. von Lebensstil zu Lebensstil. Ziel ist es dabei nicht, jedermann zu gefallen, sondern den Idealen der Bezugsgruppe ( peer group ) zu entsprechen und sich von anderen durch bestimmte Symbole (z.B. Kleidung), zu distanzieren. Dies kann über die Adaption bestimmter Moden, Modestile und Styles geschehen (bzw. deren Negierung), über den persönlichen Umgang (Bezugsgruppen), das Freizeitverhalten ( Lifestyle ) und vieles mehr. Weiterhin unterscheiden sich die persönlichen (bzw. gruppenspezifischen) Wertvorstellungen und Symbole mit dem Alter, der Schichtzugehörigkeit, dem Geschlecht etc., also sowohl mit äusseren, sozio-strukturellen Rahmenbedingungen als auch mit individuellen Merkmalen und Präferenzen. Unter dem Strich hat das Ausmass des Status- und Prestigestrebens durch demonstrativen Konsum also, allen Einschränkungen zum Trotz, keineswegs an Relevanz verloren. Die in modernen Industriegesellschaften nach wie vor existente soziale Ungleichheit sorgt überdies dafür, dass Statussymbole weiterhin wichtig bleiben, insbesondere vor dem Hintergrund postmoderner Differenzierung und Pluralisierung. Damit ist das soziale Prestige in modernen Konsumgesellschaften weiterhin abhängig vom Konsumniveau und -stil einer Person und verstärkt den Hang zum demonstrativen, geltungsbetonten Konsum. Teilweise werden dem modernen Konsum heute sogar existenzerhellende , sinnstiftende, die komplexe Realität strukturierende Funktionen zugeschrieben. So wird der Erfolg heutiger Markenkonzepte auch darin gesehen, dass Markenwelten ein überschaubares, funktionierendes Modell von Identität und Ordnung liefern. Abschliessend ist anzumerken, dass sich jeder ab und an mal etwas Besonderes leisten will und nicht nur einzelne gesellschaftliche Schichten, Milieus oder Individuen nach dem Reiz des Besonderen streben. In diesem Sinne ist der demonstrative Konsum ein universelles Phänomen, das allen Menschen zu eigen ist.

There has been confusion and sometimes controversy over these, for example the proposed UK identity card system.     Abstract: This volume serves to present to interested readers recent developments in microsimulation and public policy. It strings together: selected papers presented at the International Microsimulation Conference on Population Ageing and Health: Modelling Our Future held in Canberra, Australia in December 2003; and recent thinking in the field of microsimulation as reflected in special contributions by some of the leading experts in the field; description of 20 key models relating to fiscal and health human resource issues concerning sustainability of health systems around the globe. The focus of the conference was on practical uses of microsimulation in government policy although theoretical underpinnings also received considerable attention. The volume covers a diversity of subjects: health status; pharmacare and health expenditure issues; financing, caring and health delivery; health human resources; and data challenges. To provide an insight into actual models used around the world, the book also has a section devoted to the challenges associated with building of microsimulation models and their current use in the formulation of public policy. The book presents some innovative analysis on public policy issues contained in some of the conference papers along with the methodological advancements made in the microsimulation field. It contains invaluable information that aims to help shape the current and future public policy debates in this area.
